[Goanet] Goan food by S. Walke
"wHY SERVE GOAN GODSHE SWEETMEATS AND DELICACIES to guests during film festival only?... Yes he's right!!! All over the world, local delicacies are promoted and showcased in every nook and corner. Except in Goa!. I think this is an excellent idea and needs to be seriously considered. Nowadays all we see in Goa are chicken tandoori, chicken tikkas, (not even the authentic ones) chole etc. etc. We are silently watching all the non Goans selling their wares, whereas our delicacies take a back seat. I remember as a kid, my mother would take me to the beaches of Vagathor, Vozran etc. There were no restaurants there. A bujia stall would always be seen where hot chilly, onion bujia would be sold wrapped in newspaper and tied with thread. Those type of bujias are never found today. We are only catering for people who swarm from other parts of the country. Also Goan films, music and folklore should be given serious consideration. The way Goa is showcased, it is not interesting for the local people. One may as well go to any of the other beaches in Indiawhat's the difference? Bernice Pereira
[Goanet] [JudeSundayReflections] First Sunday of Advent
25-Nov-2012 Dear Friend, Today we begin a new season in the life of the Church, the season of Advent. It's a new beginning, and beginnings are important for us. It's an opportunity to start again, to forget the past and the mess which we have made in our lives and the possibility to begin anew. Our God is a God of the now, the present moment! This new beginning is important especially in our faith life. We have begun the year of faith and God gives us another opportunity to walk with Him along the way! We don't have to be afraid, He will be with us every step of the way! Be not afraid! Have an exciting weekend, walking His way! Fr. Jude Sunday Reflections: First Sunday of Advent: "Be not afraid, your liberation is near!" 2-Dec-2012 Readings: Jeremiah 33: 14-16Thessalonians 3: 12-4: 2Luke 21: 25-28, 34-36 The first reading from the prophet Jeremiah starts with the reiteration of the proclamation of the promise of the Lord. "The days are surely coming," says the Lord, "when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah." Faith means accepting what God speaks and offers, rather than what human beings like and choose. Hope means trusting and accepting what God promises in Jesus Christ, even if it is not what human beings might prefer to have. Hence conversion is integral to responding to the word of God. What I discovered It occurred some years ago. A Hollywood actor suddenly became ill. When his personal physician checked him, the doctor informed the actor bluntly: "Your situation is desperate. We've got to operate within 35 hours if we're to have any chance to save you." Later the actor said in effect, "I learned more about myself in those 36 hours than I had in the previous 36 years of my life." And what I discovered gave me a joy that I'd never experienced before in my life. I discovered that I wasn't afraid of death. I had made it a habit to pray to Jesus every day of my life. And now when he was minutes away from coming, I experienced the fruit of my praying. "It was then that I discovered that Jesus and I were not strangers. We were close friends - thanks to those daily conversations." Anonymous In the Gospel Luke has Jesus using the same apocalyptic language when he speaks of his return in glory. "There will be signs in the heavens and on earth distress and confusion." Those who do not believe will be frightened by these signs and portents. For those who have no faith the signs can only spell doom and destruction, they are seen as the punishment of God. But those who are believers have nothing to fear for these signs, trials and troubles point to the coming of the Lord. He is near. True Christian prayer is the typical Advent invocation, 'Thy Kingdom Come', which is rightly translated 'Come Lord Jesus Come!' Though the coming of the Lord is as certain as the dawn, yet if we are not ready, if we are not vigilant, we will miss the Lord. "Be on your guard, so that your hearts are not preoccupied with other things. Be alert at all times and pray." The Gospel of Luke, which is characterized by a strong interest in prayer, urges us to pray in the context of the end of history. Advent speaks to us of an order of being and existence that is beyond a natural outlook of life. While the faithless say: "Eat drink and be merry for tomorrow we die", while sceptics affirm: "this is all there is to life". Advent reminds us that this world is not all there is and so we pray for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will help us to look beyond, to the Kingdom, while we wait with joyful hope for its realization here on earth and in the next. Advent reminds us to take stock of our priorities in life. We have to be on the alert always, we have to be prepared. Prepared not only for the disaster or dangers that may strike, but we need to be prepared for the opportunities that come our way but once. The greatest opportunity, the greatest blessing is the Lord's coming into our life. But if we are not watchful we may miss the chance of a lifetime. Missing the signal In its day, the Titanic was the world's largest ship, weighing 46, 328 tons and it was considered unsinkable. Yet late during the night of April 14-15 1912, the unthinkable happened to the unsinkable. Near midnight, the great Titanic struck an iceberg, ripping a three hundred foot hole through five of its sixteen watertight compartments. It sank in two and a half hours killing 1,513 people. Before the Titanic sank, warning after warning had been sent to tell the crew that they were speeding into an ice field, but the messages were ignored. In fact, when a nearby ship sent an urgent warning, the Titanic was talking to Cape Race about the time the chauffeurs were to meet arriving passengers at the dock in New York, and what dinner menus were to be ready. Preoccupied with the trivia, the Titanic responded to the warning, "Shut up. I am talking to Cape Race. You are j

[Goanet] Special Status for Goa.
Your bucolic army is enjoying their good stay in Goa. They have nothing to do. Take a look at the camp at Altinho. They use the Portuguese facilities for a good time. Were you not given a a happy moment by your panzi chiefs? On an other note the Hong Kong chappies are asking for permanent autonomy. During their demo's they now wave the pre 1997 flags. Atleast they were given the chance to stay or flee. We in Goa are faced with 5 decades of bucolism. BC ? Industries set up in Goa do not utilise the native talent of Goans. [Goanet] Dabolim over MOPA
The BJP led government appears to be pursuing with MOPA with no clear answers on so many aspects i.e. (1) What will be the future of Dabolim i.e. will 2 airports be sustainable in a small state or are Goans considered foolish to accept this absurd logic of 2 Airports, (2) Why is the land set aside for parking given away by the corrupt ex-government, not re-notified as yet by the current Government; or is this to drown Dabolim in favour of MOPA ? (3) While are we giving away a prime centrally located airport (now grabbed by the Navy) and replacing with an Airport at the extreme end of Goa. Are we that foolish? (4) Who has purchased land and commercial licenses already around MOPA so as to benefit from this unnecessary waste of Tax Payers money, destruction of environment & displacement of the locals.(5) What will be the implication on the Goan demographics with the huge migrant labour that will need to be brought in, and also the open welcome mat to more of India to come, purchase more real estate in Goa, and settle; of course the greedy real estate/builders lobby have all to gain from MOPA; they are finishing off other parts of Goa and now preparing a new market for themselves around MOPA to devastate with their mega monstrosities!! It will be wise if the Government holds an open debate on the common sense of having MOPA instead of pushing this project down the Goan Throat. The Logical solution is to demand the Navy withdraws from the land grab at Dabolim. The Navy came as they claim to liberate and not to grab land. I am sure if the Government has the courage to put forth this demand to the Navy to move out, many Goans will support this move. Will the BJP MLA's and Independents supporting the BJP come out clearly with their views on MOPA vs. Dabolim? For some reason most of them are very quite on the issue. The existence of this industrial group of complexs makes the existence of the Indian Army & the Indian Navy neccessary for Disaster Management purposes.Sancho Panzas seem to forget that GOA IS A BORDER STATE(recollect the 26/11 incidents in Mumbai) The other reason being PLO's (Portuguese leftovers still wanting to go back to the so called "buccolic" days of Portuguese yore. [Goanet] Let's face it
Telling it all like it is – SIMPLY MY WAY The “Goan culture” Up until Goa’s allegiance got surgically transformed from Portugal to India, Goans of all religious faiths had imbibed the fear of God and a sense of decorum [propriety and good taste in conduct and appearance]from their erstwhile foreign rulers. These two traits formed the core components of the much touted Goan culture. However, life styles and culinary habits differed, depending on religious affiliations. Six decades later, the so called Goan culture is on the wane, generally, and much more sectorally. The converted Christians now scream their tops off for tampering with their culture, while the rest who make up for a two-thirds majority in the State hardly bother. Strangely enough, a one-third minority speaks for the whole of Goa which, elsewhere in India would amount to a recipe for riots. While the British held sway over Indian lives for over three centuries, there ought to have been a volley of voices clamouring for a culture that was taken away from them. Surprisingly, there isn’t even a whisper in the wind bewailing the bygones. One reason could be that the British colonial influence on India fell short, due to their shorter period of adventure than that of the Portuguese in Goa. Going by that precept, it seems that the Goan culture which some Goans flourish in prose and poetry, is an offshoot of the Portuguese way of life, including their ‘amanhãs’, i.e. doing tomorrow what could have been done yesterday. Not long ago a friend of mine dropped by unannounced. It happened to be a day of feast in Christian calendar, so I asked for the pleasure of his company for lunch with us, which he kindly accepted. Being a celebratory occasion, ‘sorpotel’ took the pride of place on the menu. It usually does in a normal Goan home, or so we are made to believe. A little later what hurt the ‘sorpotel’s’ pride, but not mine though, was when my friend politely brushed-off the Goan delicacy in preference to a plain vegetable dish. My friend was a Goan too, but his culture differed from his other Goan compatriots who wear theirs on their sleeves. I remember my guest had also slipped out of his ‘chappals’ before showing himself in. That also appeared to be a part of his Goan culture and, by the way, of the larger Hindu community in Goa, too.
