[Goanet] New national role for Goa Congressmen

2012-12-06 Thread U. G. Barad

I read an interesting article titled "Rahul Gandhi's boys in Andhra Pradesh
to measure up Jaganmohan Reddy" at:
URL:
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Rahul-Gandhis-boys-in-Andhra-Prades
h-to-measure-up-Jaganmohan-Reddy/articleshow/17446135.cms

If the following is to be believed ("Sources suggest that the duo, Viswajit
Rane and Jitendra Deshprabhu, are quizzing MLAs about their assessment of
the political scene if the Congress enters into an alliance with YSR
Congress.") it would seem that Rahul Gandhi wants some of the Goa
Congressmen to have important national role in the party.

Best regards,

U. G. Barad

Hello Domnic-Bab,

First of all Konkani words can have multiple meanings in Salcete and in Bardez.
In Salcete villages the Intruz (Carnaval) Monom or Mono, with an acute accent
on second "o" makes it Monom, a feared figure at Carnaval time or boogey-man.
But if you have an acute accent on first "o" as in "Mo" , yes the meaning is
"dumb" certainly.
In Portuguese there are accents, so it conveys the clear word pronunciation.
I don't know how they will differentiate it in Devanagri script.
But "Mono" can have 2 meanings. So when a Saxtti mother used to say to a child
"Baba mono etolo tuka khauncheak" it means the boogey-man and not the dumb
person.

Quite agree with Mervyn and Elsie.  Can a true blue blooded

no powder mix can produce.  Tired after arriving from a trip, I once went to a
restaurant in Calangute and asked for a Goan fish curry and rice.  The
curry was terrible .These guys should be sued for calling it Goan.

[Goanet] THAT'S LIFE

2012-12-06 Thread PAES

THAT’S LIFE – Bennet Paes

Good old days when the river ‘Sal’ had no concrete corridor over its head, I
had to use the ‘thar’ (ferry-boat) below to get across. Failing to catch the
‘caminhão’(bus) on the other side, I often ran a mile or two, just to meet my
sweetheart in downtown Chinchinim. ‘Sweat was oozing out of my teeth’ – so to
speak, and the girl’s mother used to pity me, saying: “the poor boy must have
swum across the river.”

But the sympathising lady didn’t know that I didn’t know how to swim. I didn’t
dare confess it to my ladylove, either. I let her feel that I could even run
over water, even though only to steal a close look at her pretty face.
Honestly, that’s as far as I could get, because her mother didn’t allow me any
closer.

Which reminds me of an old Dean Martin number called “L.O.V.E.”. It said love
is more than a game for two.  Sure it was – the mother played the no.3, and I
had to lump the load whether I liked it or not. However, what made up for this
unpalatable situation was my DNA’s oversupply of appetite for change.  So I
decided to get out of that ‘ferry-tale’ kind of a love affair and seek
adventure on prettier pastures elsewhere. This ‘moon river’ had made my dream
and broken it, as well.

But fortunately for me, and not long after the first chapter in the book came
to a close, the Portuguese ‘sossegados’ had for a change sprung into action.
Keeping up with colonial traditions, rarely though, they produced a world-class
alternative to the ferry. A brand new bridge was in place which forced the
ferry-man out of business and enabled the ‘caminhãos’ to extend their route
over the river and past my doorstep. It was a huge spur to my love-bug’s quest
for new faces, in places far beyond Chinchinim. Yes, it was, and I did seize
the moment to go on a roll, until another change stopped me dead in my tracks.
It reversed my journey right back to this side of the bridge where it all
began.

Several flings older and with maturity ripened yellow, I descended on a path
that angels no longer feared to tread. Then, while in a contemplative mood, a
line from Frank Sinatra’s lyrics caught my memory: “For once in my life I found
someone who needs me...”. And that someone happened to be the last in a series
of my life’s drama. That’s right – she happens to be my wife.

[Goanet] My Xaviers (by Brian Mendonca, corrected re-run)

2012-12-06 Thread Frederick FN Noronha फ्रेड्रिक नोरोन्या *فريدريك نورونيا
 THURSDAY, 6 DECEMBER 2012
 My Xaviers

The watch tells me it is 12 o'clock. The middle of the day. 12 hours have
gone by. 12 hours yet to come until this day is done. 50 years have gone
by for Xaviers. 50 and many more still to come.

As I look around I see the famliar faces. I see my teachers. I see my
colleagues who were with me in college. But I also don't see some faces --
faces which have shaped my destiny. For this I am sad, for we remember them
 today.

The many beautiful voices of the choir we just heard, shows us how many of
us work to sing a single tune in harmony.

Most Reverend Father Anil Couto, Archbishop-Designate of Delhi, Reverend
Father Walter, Principal of St Xaviers college, distinguished dignitaries,
members of the staff, and my dear friends. As I stand here I feel honoured
and privileged to be part of these celebrations. I thank Fr Walter for
extending to me this invitation.

As I look at the campus today it is so different from what it was in our
days. There are new buildings, new colours, new themes. But apart all this
physical change, one thing has endured -- the values of St Xaviers college
-- Catholic values --the values of St Francis Xavier.

And these values were instilled in us by our teachers, to whom we are so
grateful today. Indeed the learnings outside our classroom have endured
more than those inside it. Whether it was Ms Ann saying, 'Make friends with
people from all communities,' or Ms Ava saying 'This too shall pass away,'
or Prof. Rajashekar instilling in us the way to respect our teachers -- or
Prof Newman buying a set of my books for the library --- they all gave us
lessons for life.

It is this confidence which has enabled me to excel, go out of Goa, prove
my worth and return to Goa to give back something to this land. The
upbringing in Xaviers in my formative years made it all possible. Apart
from memories I have nothing to recall the past. But I want to share with
you something I have preserved for 26 years - the Mr Xavier sash of
1986-86 [shows
the white satin sash to thunderous applause].

All of us ex-Xavierites want to continue to be a part of this family. We
need a strong Alumni association. We also need greater interaction between
students of our colleges so we can build on the spirit of Xaviers.

On behalf of the ex-Xavierites, I want to thank Xaviers for making us what
we are. For showing us what we could be. Prof. Newman purchased copies of
my first self-published volume of poems *Last Bus to Vasco: Poems from
Goa* (2006)
for the library. I would like to present a copy of my second self-published
book of verse *A Peace of India: Poems in Transit *(2010) and a copy of *Indian
Literature *(2004)*-- *the literary journal of the Sahitya Akademi -- which
includes my poetic debut on the national stage -- to Fr Walter, for the
college.

I'd like to end with my poem dedicated to all ex-Xavierites in tribute to
the lovely memories we share:

I'm not aware what the school textbooks say about Goa's liberation but
for those who are keen to learn what happened and why it happened
there are several books that detail the many aspects of liberation
history. Some of the books came out last year as part of Goa's 50
years of independence. Besides, the Central Library has many books
that a keen student of Goa's liberation story can access.

What Lawrence Fernandes has written is nothing new. Reading it in the
context of the renewed demand for Special Status, Goans who feel
betrayed by Nehru's promise must understand that politics is not
static. If Nehru was alive it may have been a different story but his
successors choose not to follow the late PM's words. However, Sonia
has made it clear that the Goa government must advance its case for
Special Status on grounds other than economic. A hard call but
nevertheless worth trying. The Goa government is all for it and Goans
who clamour for it, in fact almost all in and outside the state, must
have patience. If it comes good, very good and if it doesn't we could
write more articles, have more debates and keep the issue alive till
the cows come home or Goa goes to the dogs. The cows are roaming the
streets and roads and the stray dogs are everywhere ;-(

[Goanet] Raisons in Goa (by Rose Fernandes)

2012-12-06 Thread Melvyn Fernandes
Dear goanet readers

Word on the ground in the UK is that it is not possible to obtain raisons (not
to be confused with currants) in Goa, hence we are continually receiving
requests
for raisons to pack in our already heavy baggage to bring over on our next
visit to Goa!

Is this true that no shop in Goa sells raisons?

If they do, could any of you kindly advise me where to buy raisons in Goa,
preferable either in Candolim, Calangute, Mapusa or Panjim areas. The reason is
during my holidays in January next year, I would like to purchase a packet and
bring it back to London, United Kingdom, just to prove a point!

Unless, of course, raisons have become a new substitute for Cadbury's
chocolates... a food item known to taste better when one does not have to pay
for it.
Talking of chocolates, those living in the United Kingdom and visiting Goa now
have a bonus. Special consideration has been shown by manufacturers who
have picked up on our chocolate parcels and changed metal containers to
plastic, thus reducing the weight to facilitate us to carry more. This should
also have
a positive effect on the mining crisis in Goa.

The request for I-Pods by our folks in Goa is a different topic?

Tinned Kraft Cheese appearing on shelves in our Indian supermarkets are
disappearing like the speed of light as the annual migration to Goa begins as
our
people move from cold Europe to sunny Goa.

More on Brubeck Pakistan and India connection ...
http://lmkonline.wordpress.com/tag/alex-rodrigues
Sometime in the '60s Rodrigues played with big-name jazz player Dave
Bubeck. "I felt so important (during the collaborative performance) at
Denso Hall," he said. ( ed - likely 1958 )

The 1958 State Department tour of jazz pianist and composer Dave Brubeck
and his integrated classic Quartet, with saxophonist Paul Desmond,
drummer Joe Morello, and bassist Eugene Wright, marked the first foray
of the Jazz Ambassadors across the Iron Curtain. The group began the
trip after a commercial gig in Stockholm, traveling through East Germany
to Poland, and from there to Turkey, India, Ceylon, Pakistan, and
Afghanistan.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Take_Five
"Take Five" is a jazz piece written by Paul Desmond and performed by The
Dave Brubeck Quartet on their 1959 album Time Out. The inspiration for
this style of music came during a US State Department
 sponsored tour of
Eurasia and Brubeck observed in
Turkey a group of street musicians
performing a traditional Turkish folk song that was played in 9/8 time,
a rare meter for Western music. After learning about the form from
native symphony musicians, Brubeck was inspired to create an album that
deviated from the usual 4/4 time of Jazz and experimented in the more
exotic such styles he experienced
abroad.^

*Home Ministry of India has lifted two-months gap for tourist visa*

Dear reader,

we are pleased to announce that the Home Ministry of India has lifted the
two-months gap for tourist visas.

We are very happy about this decision as we were concerned about the matter
and, as you might know, we had sent a Petition to the Home Ministry and
other Indian Ministries on 7 December 2011 to ease the two-months gap. See
Petition

We had also sent a copy to the German Foreign Ministry in Berlin. They
answered us on 31 July 2012 that the matter regarding visa rules is of the
sole responsibility of the issuing country. Nevertheless the German
Ministry contacted the Indian Embassy in Berlin. See Answer of German
Foreign

Ein Schreiben in dieser Angelegenheit war auch an das Außenministerium in

[Goanet] The Goan Tourist

2012-12-06 Thread Melvyn Fernandes
Dear goanet readers

This is the season when Goan immigrants living and toiling overseas and paying
taxes for the development of overseas countries become Goan tourists heading
for Goa to enjoy the sunshine and food.  The patriotic Goan expecting to hear
our music will be dismayed to find music from all regions of India played all
day and night in our local restaurants.   If you look closely the seasonal
workers in all these restaurants come from different parts of India hence the
music to the foreigner makes no difference and keeps the workers happy.  This
music in also featured as background in Goa tourism advertisements by cable in
Europe.

Talking of Goan food, if you order a toast you will get real toast where you
have to scrap off the burnt bits.  The person serving you has probably never
made toast before. The waiter or chef filling in the vacuum of native Goan
workers and serving you fish curry has also never seen fish in their part of
India.  You of course know where the original native Goan workers are - on
cruise ships, Swindon, etc.

It is easy to differentiate the Goan tourist from the foreigner, for example, a
foreigner will catch a taxi and relax on the journey.  A Goan tourist will be
sitting on edge looking at the meter, no one told them that the meter does not
work.  Likewise in shops it is quite embarrassing to see the Goan tourist
haggling over the price of clothes which locals buy anyway.  To further break
this down, visitors from the United Kingdom can definitely be easily spotted as
they bring out their antibacterial liquid or wipes for their hands before each
meal in a restaurant despite a water tap being available to wash their hands.

Most hospitality services be it accommodation or food are subcontracted by the
susegad Goan owner only interested in depositing money in the bank.  It would
be good to see these owners take a more active interest in promoting our music
and organise relevant training for their chefs and waiters.  The Goa tourist
office in Panjim may be able to assist in this matter.

The cows are roaming the
streets and roads and the stray dogs are everywhere ;-(

jc,
I believe I clearly spelt the reasons here, 10 years ago, why gold would be a
good investment vehicle. Either I have been very lucky i.e. ten years in a row
or the reasons given were very correct.

Those who were interested in the future then and who invested in
gold are smiling today.

Sadly, I think very few people on this forum are interested in the future. A
precious few are interested in the present. I feel that most people here are
fixated on years gone by. The most popular one being 1961, which is brought up
ad nauseam.

Finally, the Golden Rule, just like gold, is an awesome investment. Those who
have been lucky enough to invest in it, are the happy people of today.

Unfortunately, because of religio-political pressure the Supreme Court of India

Thank you for your concern but no thank you. The Expert Committee for the RD

It was a 'BHAGWAS' an utter failure during the last tenure of the BJP in
