I have been a guest first at Goafest and now currently photographer for India Bike Week. I really see the lack of Goan culture in these events, despite the fact that this is exactly what people come here to see. I met a French lady in Kerala who says Goa is superficial, and I realise that's because we don't show our true culture enough, which the Portuguese have acknowledged as truly unique. The MST received the Right Livelihood Award (also known as the “Alternative Nobel Prize”) in 1991. Cícero Guedes dos Santos, coordinator of the Landless Workers’ Movement (Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais sem Terra, MST) of Brazil was killed by gunmen on Friday, January 25th. He received some twelve shots to the head while he was bicycling away from a settlement of landless families in the vicinity of the Cambahyba sugar plant, in the municipality of Campos dos Goytacazes in Rio de Janeiro. It is yet unclear who is responsible for the murder. The MST received the Right Livelihood Award Foundation in the Swedish Parliament in Stockholm in 1991 "for winning land for landless families and helping them to farm it sustainably". Ole von Uexkull, Executive Director of the Foundation, said: "The Right Livelihood Award Foundation strongly condemns this crime and calls on the state of Rio de Janeiro and the Brazilian government to protect the Landless Movement and their activists." Other Laureates of the Right Livelihood Award from all over the world expressed their solidarity and support to the family and colleagues of the murdered activist. The Paraguayan educator and human rights advocate Martín Almada (RLA 2002), lamented that "violent actions continue to claim the lives of Latin American leaders and advocates for the environment and sustainability." On their website, the MST explains that Cícero Guedes, who was a sugar-cane cutter, coordinated the occupation of a complex of seven farms with 3,500 hectares (8,600 acres) located in the State of Rio de Janeiro. 14 years ago, this large estate was subject to expropriation by the National Institute of Colonization and Agrarian Reform (INCRA). However, the process continued only recently, when it was approved by the Federal Court in August 2012. Although 11 years ago he had already managed to acquire land and become a "settler" himself, Cícero Guedes dos Santos remained a tireless advocate of agrarian reform. He taught organic farming techniques to families occupying estates and would always argue that the products obtained from ecologically sound agriculture are "superior" to those sold in supermarkets. Update 1.2.13 A committee of parents had called for a boycott of the school (Primary Section) for two days i.e 31st Jan and 1st Feb, to press for their demands of the arrest of the class teacher of the girl who had been raped, and of CISF personnel and the school clerk First day, it seem there was a mix response and second day appeared to be near normal ? However, teachers were seen escorting small-small groups of children upto the School Gate at the end of the school hours around 1.30pm. Plenty of police spotted at the Gate all day, also saw a bus load of police nearby some of whom playing cards inside the bus. The compound wall height is now raised by half a metre and the work is still going on see pics. Also, one of the two main gates of the school seems now permanently closed with brick wall, the gate which was nearest to primary section or opp. to MPT Chairman's residence 'Harbour House'. see last pic 20 days now since the incident took place in first floor of the school toilet, no breakthrough in the case yet. However, Harley enthusiasts are well known fans of the "thunder between my legs". It is a finely engineered exhaust system that delivers the unique, signature HarleyDavidson sound. On a related note when US President George Bush travelled to India in 2006 and signed the "American Harleys for Indian mangoes" deal, a lot of India mango fans in the US were overjoyed. Prime Alphonso mangoes landed on the US market at about $69 per dozen.This exorbitant price sort of dampened the enthusiasm a bit considering different varieties of Mexican and Central American as well as Brasilian mangoes are availabe at about $12 per dozen in local supermarkets. The price differential is somewhat comparable (on a different scale) to the one between the $18,700 price of the XL 1200N Nightster Harley-Davidson and the $8,000 price of the Kawasaki Ninja 650 or the $1,500 price of the Bajaj Pulsar 200. To my comment: It is with amusement that I read that the communists have become lobbyist for the mining industry! Fredrick Noronha writes: This is very much in keeping with Uncle Marx's view of thesis-antithesis-synthesis. Or so it seems to me. In the meanwhile, the capitalist USofA is heavily dependent (financially, tradewise, etc) on "communist" China. What does that tell you? Marx was probably right :-) I presume that Fred means Karl Marx, and not Marx Groucho! Anyway, what exactly is this thesis-antithesis-synthesis? If Fred can provide a brief on the subject, or provide a url where it can be located, I would appreciate it. As regarding China, it is communist only in name. And the leadership uses the communist only for self-aggrendisation, so that no one can question them for holding on the position of power.
