[Goanet] The tyranny and Goans succumbing to bharatization
In 1961 lead by tyrant Can Death the nemisis of Ghenghis, many Goans faced atrocities which were rightly recorded by Leo Lawerence in his book called Nehru Seizes Goa. Unfortunately the writer failed to garner many other incidents of rape and crimes commited by the illegal invaders, which have gone unrecorded in this courageous and well documented version which every Goan should read. To cite an example there is some research chap in the United States who looks after birds, this guy after reading excerpts of this book and other documents has now accepted the illegal occupation of Goa. Therefore people who make weak statements should take a look at this publication before venturing into illusions. Going back to this tyrant Can Death, it is believed that after invading and occupying Goa had his hands placed in his pockets because he was unable to rule Goa. This was because of the Portuguese spoken in government circles. To overcome this, the trickster force introduced English, there were traitors like that of a famous mine owner who started the newspaper called Nav Hind. (New Backside), radio programs were curtailed. Today we know the situation of Goa. It is time to change our language that the ghantis don't know. BC

[Goanet] Viv on Goa.
Posted by: "Vivian A. DSouza" socorrokar I cannot dispute George's account of what is happening in Goa. But the description is more apt for the beach belt of Bardez, including Candolim, Calangute and Anjuna than any other place. There is a big divide between the aforementioned "Beach belt" where all the tourists congregate and the hinterland which is still largely untouched by the honky-tonk pf tourist centered so called development. After over 11 years in my secluded ancestral village, far from the beach belt, my wife and I have enjoyed the pristine environment, where birds abound, where the customs of the old days still prevail, with frequent "Ladainhas", "Festas", and assorted parties to celebrate First Holy Communion, Christenings and of course weddings and various anniversaries. Life is good ! Fresh fish and Goa "pao" or bread is delivered to the door. We grow our own vegetables and only go to the market occasionally for more vegetables. One can pass his time fishing in the creek that meanders through our rice fields from the Mandovi river. Just this week, fellow villagers shared their bounty of vegetables and live crabs, excess to their needs with us. Such is the generosity of our fellow villagers. Neighbors care for each other, visit each other frequently without a formal invitation, and are solicitious about each other's health. As for the beach, I have never hankered for Goa's beaches, after being spoilt by the pristine beaches of Tanzania. For a beach holiday, there is nothing like the clean pictureasque beaches of the Carribean or even the Southern USA, like Florida. Beaches further North in the USA are too cold for swimming and are crowded with those deprived of the golden tan that Goans are endowed with. Of course we are spoilt by having residences and cars in both the USA and Goa, so we have the best of both worlds. We visit the USA and Canada primarily to see our children and grandchildren, but after a few weeks we long to be back in our bucolic, peaceful, quiet village,in Goa where the only tourists we see are the occasional "birders" as we are reputed to have some of the best bird viewing locales in Goa. [Goanet] Goans should not sell their ancestral property
I fully agree with Arwin reg. below post and believe Goans should not sell their ancestral property. Even if they are not using it atleast they should keep it if not for anything else atleast in memory of their ancestors. However I would like to make some comments as to the reasons behind why so many Goans are sadly selling their ancestral properties: 1. Many of the Goans are not based in Goa. Due to economic reasons many Goans work in Bombay, Gulf or other locations and are forced to keep their houses closed. They cant give to any caretaker due to fear of losing their homes. 2. Then being ancestral property there are often family disputes particularly after marriage where they feel rather than having more problems regarding it, they feel selling is the easy option as they get equal money and that too often huge amount. 3. Since maintaining the huge ancestral property may be difficult they find the easy option is to get this amount and then buy a holiday home so that as and when say maybe once a year they come down on holiday they have a place to spend in. 4. The prices of property has sky rocketed so much that they find it very tempting to sell and take this huge amount of their share and look at short time gains and book their profits little realizing that in future the prices will be much more. 5. Then again many Goans have settled for good abroad maybe in USA, Europe, New Zealand, Australia etc. and only go on holiday to Goa. In this case they would prefer to have an apartment which is easy to maintain and look after and their purpose of having a holiday is served. 6. As a Goan friend of mine said, having ancestral property sadly today is a curse - meaning it is a cause of so much ill feeling, enemity and fights among families. I repeat ideally ancestral property should never been sold but the above are the harsh realities today. Camilo Fernandes From: Arwin Mesquita To: Goanet Subject: [Goanet] Foolish Goans Selling Land Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 I am extremely disappointed to be aware that there are so many Goans foolishly selling their ancestral land so as to purchase temporary luxuries, BMW's, Audi's etc no wonder sales of these cars are rising in Goa. Some are selling land to move into Apartments. What will they do with this cars some years? Are Apartments better in the long run than your own estate? These Goans could have their prime land and have the luxuries they desire if they applied a little common sense, did some hard-work; but it appears that all they want is easy cash by selling land to outsiders; Land/Houses that their forefathers worked very hard to attain. The same thing was done by the East Indians in Mumbai and now many Lazy Goans are doing the same. Instant large sums Money seems to be the immediate Goal and I suppose when that runs out, who/what will they sell next!!! Then you have the Parasitic Builders whose main job today is to negotiate with joint stake holders of Land, so that they can strike a deal, buy the property and bring up the monstrocities so as to sell to majority from outside the state. Builders need to understand that whatever they do has an impact on the environment/society and they can't destruct at Will!! And these Land stake holders who agree are blinded by the greedy builders via one thing; again Instant Cash!! Why do you think many Outsiders are paying large sums of cash (Largely Black Money) to the Goans? Goans will reap what they sow if this pathetic attitude is not changed!! Arwin Mesquita, UAE

Re: [Goanet] Nine questions on Mopa?
It makes me happy that there in deed are LOBOS who think arseways. People of Mopa are crying that their agricultural land is being taken away just like Tanzania's people wanting water to grow crops on theirs. Why not build a hospital attached to each house? Why the ambulance? Why leave Goa Civilian Airport to the Occupiers (NAVY) and build a new one to destroy good agricultural land for good? Why not kick the Navy out and solve the problem? And I like the cheek of my namesake telling us that the Tanzanians wanted their children to be clerks in Offices. I only wish that the children of USA wished to be clerks in offices rather than be millionaires producing food that makes USA the superpower that it is capable of feeding the world. Cheers floriano goasuraj 9890470896 Dr. Ferdinando dos Reis Falcão, 21 years ago, I read an article in which the head of a Scandinavian aid agency in Tanzania was complaining bitterly about some villagers who had vandalized a drill rig. The agency was trying to develop an area by drilling wells for clean water and the agency got rewarded by villagers vandalizing the equipment. The newspaper reported that the villagers removed parts from the truck the drill rig was on. The truck/rig had drilled in two different spots but did not find water. The aid agency said that the rig was on a tight schedule and was going to move to the next village, when the incident occurred. The rest of the story got reported a week later. The villagers claimed that they had waited 10 years for the truck to arrive. They felt that if the truck left without hitting water, they would have to wait another 10 years for the next drill to arrive. So they removed the steering wheel and kept it in a safe place. Then they informed the drill foreman that they would release the steering only after the rig hit water. The chief/headman further said that without water, there would be no school or dispensary. The villagers were tired of trying to eek out a living by growing cassava on marginal land. They were tired of having to die of snake and insect bites. They were tired of their crops being eaten by wild animals. They were tired of being left out of progress. They wanted their children to have a better life. They wished for their children to work as clerks in an office. They knew that without infrastructure, they would remain without advancement. The six lane highway in Goa is the same story. The infrastructure will serve to introduce Goa to the 21st Century. Today, it takes two hours plus to drive from north to south Goa! It is also beyond sad to see people die because an ambulance takes 40 minutes to travel 20 miles on the current Goan roads. The lack of roads and transport makes life miserable in Goa. Mopa is another project that could bring Goa into the 21st Century. A transport hub usually provides endless economic opportunities. Any planer will tell you that without new infrastructure, it is extremely difficult to bring economic development into a region. When the transport facilities are not improved, the economy remains stagnant or even dies. Lastly, when I go on vacation to the Caribbean, I pay extra to be on a resort that is at least an hour away from the nearest airport. I just do not want to be disturbed by the sound of aircraft landing, taking off or flying over when I am relaxing on a beach. The hotels in south Goa should be the ones lobbying the hardest for the Mopa airport in the north. Mervyn

Goans have watched yesterday's Prudent debate on the Lokayukta Amendments. It looks like Manohar Parrikar , Goa's esteemed CM, does not know what 'debate' means. The activists never got a chance to speak. Neither the Moderator. If Manohar Parrikar was representing the Government of Goa, then the work "I" should have been "WE". Frankly speaking, if I was included in that debate, I would have rebuked him for not knowing what a debate means and walked out urging others to do the same and not to waste their time with this uncultured zombie. [Goanet] [JudeSundayReflections] 1st Sunday of Lent
11-Feb-2013 Dear Friend, Few people like to be tested. We fear that we might fail, that we might not be up to the mark, that our weaknesses might be exposed. But we also realize that the true worth of anything or person is only seen when tested. In exams students can see how well they have mastered their studies, in sports competitions can reveal how good athletes are, in work our caliber is proved in tough assignments. In life our faith is tested in temptations and trials. Have a 'Spirit-filled' weekend beginning this Lent! Fr. Jude Sunday Reflections: First Sunday of Lent: "Resisting temptation and overcoming Sin!" 17-Feb-2013 Readings: Deuteronomy 26: 4-10;Romans 10: 8-13;Luke 4: 1-13; Today we begin a journey - a faith journey that will extend over the next forty days and end with Easter. For forty years the Jewish people made their way in the wilderness. The experience of the wilderness leads the Jewish people to deepen their faith. Biblical faith is historical faith. Our belief in God is rooted in the presence of his liberating love in history. This love is opposed to every form of humiliation and exploitation. Even today the Lord continues to liberate us from oppression and sin. We are called to believe that through His death and resurrection Jesus has liberated us and will liberate us. To accept that liberation we have to fight temptation and be prepared to let Jesus transform us this Lenten season. Giving into temptation A story is told of a wealthy woman who travelled to Europe with several friends. Her husband stayed home and played the stock market. While in Paris she found a fur coat that was the most beautiful she had ever seen. She sent a telegram to her husband that said, "Have found the perfect coat for only $50,000. What do you think?" He replied immediately with a telegram saying, "No, price too high." Imagine his surprise when she returned home with that $50,000 coat. The angry husband said, "Didn't you get my telegram?" "Yes," she said, "and here it is." The husband looked at that telegram which said, without punctuation, NO PRICE TOO HIGH." He forgot to put the coma after NO. -The devil however we may imagine it -is persistent, and in daily life we often grow discouraged when we have to face the same temptation over and over again. Being tempted is an opportunity to turn more fervently to God. With God's help we can resist all temptations. John Pichapilly in 'The Table of the Word' In today's gospel we are reminded that like us Jesus was tempted. He spent forty days in the wilderness before starting his mission. The Devil tempted Jesus in various ways. Jesus was promised instantaneous fame, abundant wealth and limitless power, in other words he could have the entire world at his feet without working for it. The temptations were serious, deceitful and treacherous. He was hungry in the desert and was tempted to use his power to satisfy his bodily needs. Jesus will also be asked to forget the meaning of the kingdom of God to put himself in the first place. Jesus also overcomes the temptation of arrogance subtly presented to him in words of scripture. But the God of Jesus is not the God who works miracles to amaze us and to overpower us, but instead he is a God of love and service. The message is clear: In the mission that is beginning Jesus proclaims the primacy of God and his kingdom. We cannot use God or his kingdom for our own personal prestige or to dominate others in any way. The attitude of Jesus must be our own and that of his church. The Church's message and its power are not to serve itself but to serve God and his chosen ones: the poor. Jesus was led by the spirit into the wilderness and we too as we begin the Lent are being led into the wilderness by the spirit. We need not be scared. In the Bible, the wilderness is the classic place of encounter with ourselves and the place where we are put to the test. As angels ministered to Jesus in his moments of temptation, God's Spirit will strengthen and console us. Leading to temptation A young boy was forbidden by his father to swim in the canal near their home. One day the boy came home carrying a wet bathing suit and his father asked him where he had been. The boy calmly stated that he had been swimming in the canal. The father was angry and said, "Didn't I tell you not to swim there?" The boy assured him that he had. The father wanted to know why he had disobeyed him. The boy said, "Well, Dad, I had my swimming suit with me, and I couldn't resist the temptation." Furious the father asked the boy why the boy had his bathing suit with him. The boy answered with total honesty, "So I would be prepared to swim, just in case I was tempted." James Valladares in 'Your Words O Lord, are Spirit and they are life.' Do not be deceived by temptations A successful female executive stood before the Pearly Gates, facing St. Peter himself. "Strange," mused St. Peter, "we've never h
[Goanet] ANALYSIS: Benedict XVI always cast himself as the reluctant pope ... (Huffington Post)
Pope Benedict Profile: Pontiff's Mission To Revive Faith Clouded By Scandal By NICOLE WINFIELD 02/11/13 01:48 PM ET EST VATICAN CITY -- Benedict XVI always cast himself as the reluctant pope, a shy bookworm who preferred solitary walks in the Alps to the public glare and the majesty of Vatican pageantry. But once in office, he never shied from charting the Catholic Church on the course he thought it needed – a determination reflected in his stunning announcement Monday that he would be the first pope to resign since 1415. While taking the Vatican and world by surprise, Benedict had laid the groundwork for the decision years ago, saying popes have the obligation to resign if they can't carry on. And to many, his decision was perfectly in keeping with a man who had dedicated his life to the church, showing his love for the institution and an acknowledgment that it needed new blood to confront the future. The German theologian, whose mission was to reawaken Christianity in a secularized Europe, grew increasingly frail as he shouldered the monumental task of purging the Catholic world of a sex abuse scandal that festered under John Paul II and exploded during his reign into the church's biggest crisis in decades, if not centuries. More recently, he bore the painful burden of betrayal by one of his closest aides: Benedict's own butler was convicted by a Vatican court of stealing the pontiff's personal papers and giving them to a journalist, one of the gravest breaches of papal security in modern times. All the while, Benedict pursued his single-minded vision to rekindle faith in a world which, he frequently lamented, seemed to think it could do without God. "In vast areas of the world today, there is a strange forgetfulness of God," he told 1 million young people gathered on a vast field for his first foreign trip as pope, World Youth Day in Cologne, Germany in 2005. "It seems as if everything would be just the same even without Him." With some decisive, often controversial moves, Benedict tried to remind Europe of its Christian heritage and set the Catholic Church on a conservative, tradition-minded path that often alienated progressives and thrilled conservatives. The Vatican's crackdown on American nuns – accused of straying from church doctrine in pursuing social justice issues rather than stressing core church teaching on abortion and homosexuality – left a bitter taste for many American Catholics. But conservatives cheered his championing of the pre-Vatican II church and his insistence on tradition, even if it cost the church popularity among liberals. As he said in his 1996 book "Salt of the Earth," a smaller but purer church may be necessary. "Maybe we are facing a new and different kind of epoch in the church's history, where Christianity will again be characterized more by the mustard seed, where it will exist in small, seemingly insignificant groups that nonetheless live an intensive struggle against evil and bring the good into the world – that let God in," he said then. Yet his papacy will be forever intertwined with the sex abuse scandal. Over the course of just a few months in 2010, thousands of people in Europe, Australia, South America and beyond came forward with reports of priests who raped and molested them as children, and bishops who covered up the crimes. Documents revealed that the Vatican knew well of the problem yet turned a blind eye for decades, at times rebuffing bishops who tried to do the right thing. Benedict had firsthand knowledge of the scope of the problem since his old office, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith which he had headed since 1982, was responsible for dealing with abuse cases. He met with victims across the globe, wept with them and prayed with them. He promised that the church must "do everything possible" to ensure such crimes never happen again. The Vatican updated its legal code to extend the statute of limitations for cases and told bishops' conferences around the world to come up with guidelines to prevent abuse. But Benedict never admitted any personal or Vatican failure. Much to the dismay of victims, he never took action against bishops who ignored or covered up the abuse of their priests or moved known pedophiles to new posts where they abused again. And hard as he tried to heal the church's wounds, Benedict's message was always clouded by his wooden personal style. No globe-trotting showman or media darling like John Paul, Benedict was a teacher and academic to the core: quiet and pensive with a fierce mind. He spoke in paragraphs, not sound bites. In recent years, his declining health made him seem increasingly fragile and somewhat disengaged in public. And he was notoriously prone to gaffes, though that was perhaps more a fault of his advisers than the pope himself. Some of Benedict's most lasting initiatives as pope – the actions he will be remembered for – focused on restoring traditional Catholic practice and wors

Dear Nelson, One may only wish but cannot control who regards Afzal Guru a martyr or whatever else. Its best to stay in ones corner instead of going to bat for the big boys. Reflect on this seriously. It may seem like I am pulling you down, but truly am not. [Goanet] NEWS: Freedom fighter, 92, has nowhere to go (HT and TNN, Mumbai)
Freedom fighter, 92, has nowhere to go Priyanka Vora, Hindustan Times Mumbai, February 05, 2013 Laura Rodrigues D’Souza, 92, at St George Hospital, CST. More than 50 years ago, Laura Rodrigues D’Souza fought for the liberation of Goa, but today the 92-year-old lies in a hospital bed at St George Hospital, CST, waiting for someone to come and take her to a place she can call home. Frail and bedridden, Laura is hoping her granddaughter in Canada will come and take her. The hospital administration, meanwhile, is searching for an old-age home as she has been declared fit to be discharged from the hospital. “She was admitted to the hospital on November 29, 2012, with weakness and swelling in the neck. An unknown person admitted her and gave a Hyderabad address. As it was an emergency, we started treatment,” said Dr J Bhawani, deputy medical superintendent, St George Hospital. However, after a week when doctors said she could go home, hospital nurses learnt she had no relatives or home in the city. Her case was referred to the superintendent of medical social work Dattatray Vibhute who started searching for her relatives. “When we spoke to her she took out documents from a torn purse. We were shocked to see she was actually a freedom fighter and was receiving a government pension,” said Vibhute. Further investigations revealed she has a daughter in Dubai and a granddaughter in Canada. Hospital authorities have now informed MRA Marg police station about Laura. I was part of the Goa liberation movement,” said Laura, who has become famous in the hospital because of her peculiar food habits. “She only has aerated drinks and loves restaurant food. She refuses hospital food,” said a ward boy. http://www.hindustantimes.com/India-news/Mumbai/Freedom-fighter-92-has-nowhere-to-go/Article1-1006433.aspx * * * Shelter home takes in freedom fighter Sumitra Deb Roy, TNN Feb 6, 2013, 02.47AM IST St George Hospital|Mother Teresa|Laura Rodricks D'Souza|homeless Goan freedom fighter MUMBAI: The 92-year-old homeless Goan freedom fighter, Laura Rodricks D'Souza, who was lingering on at St George Hospital, was taken to Mother Teresa's Asha Daan Shelter Home in Byculla on Tuesday. TOI had reported how D'Souza, a veteran of the Goa Liberation Movement, had been staying at the hospital for over two months as she had nowhere to go. Her daughter and granddaughter who live in Dubai and Canada respectively were contacted by the hospital, but they had not responded positively until Monday. The hospital's social service superintendent, Vibhute Dattatreya, had got in touch with the family, who had earlier said they were not in a position to help D'Souza. "But now the granddaughter has promised to soon come to Mumbai and take care of her grandmother," he said, adding that she may also get D'Souza's daughter along. D'Souza had a son who is no more. Dattatreya informed the granddaughter that D'Souza has been shifted to the Byculla shelter home. "The police told us that Asha Daan has agreed to take care of her. She was under the care of Asha Daan even before she was brought here," he said. A qualified ayurveda graduate, D'Souza was staying in Hyderabad with one of her Colaba neighbours. The neighbour brought her to Mumbai and admitted her to the hospital after she developed a swelling on her leg, became very weak, and had difficulty in breathing. Abraham Mathai, president of the Harmony Foundation, said: "It is heart breaking that a mother has to depend on public mercy for shelter and care while her own children are settled abroad." He, too, appealed to the shelter home to take D'Souza under their care. * * *
[Goanet] Fwd: Mopa - the bonafide of debators.
Hi Goanet: My input to your esteemed publication has not made it to print yet? Is there a problem I should know about and "correct"? Regards Carlos. -- Forwarded message -- From: Carlos Mascarenhas Date: Fri, Feb 8, 2013 at 8:37 AM Subject: Mopa - the bonafide of debators. To: goanet@lists.goanet.org The following letter to the Editor of Herald may provide us with 'who' stands to gain from real-estate ownership in the Mopa area. The publication of these names will help us discount/ignore their arguments that Goa needs two airports, or that Dabolim will survive once Mopa is operational. Dear Sir: In your esteemed publication of Feb.04, MLA Sardessai, the convenor of Goemkar, said that information under the RTI* shows *how many politicians have purchased properties in and around Mopa. Could this list of politicians, the area purchased - whether by self or wife or family - the period when purchased, be published for the information of aam-addmi, without shielding anyone, be he Congress/BJP/NCP/Independent/ Defeated MLA/Police/State Administrators/Cent.Govt. VIPs/ex-CM/present CM/ etc.? I have a right to know and you have a duty to publish. The publication of this information would declare the bona-fide of these 'champions of Mopa' and make the ongoing debate more substantive. [Goanet] PPP MODEL FOR MOPA??? WHEN GOANS ARE OPPOSED TO MOPA IN TOTALITY???
GOA: PPP MODEL FOR MOPA??? WHEN GOANS ARE OPPOSED TO MOPA IN TOTALITY??? http://www.goasu-raj.org/gen/news/2902.asp The undersigned was present for this meet of AAP at Menezes Braganza Hall, Panjim. He has also put \'two\' questions to Prashant Bushan on AAP future programme for Elections 2014. To our knowledge, Vijay Sardessai, Fatorda MLA, now Independent, former Congressman vying for the Congress ticket, as GOEMKAR, is now opposed tp MOPA in totality. It was the Congress which first came up with the idea of MOPA when Vijay Sardessai was very much in the Congress Camp. We did not see Vijay Sardessai raising the banner of revolt against MOPA then, as also when Churchill, Matanhy & Co raised the banner of revolt against MOPA, Churchill to lubricate his SGF of course. According to us, Vijay Sardessai should not have asked the above question w.r.t. PPP model for MOPA to Prashant Bushan of AAP. Instead he should have ask the question like this: \'GOANS ARE OPPOSED TO MOPA IN TOTALITY. IS YOUR PARTY SUPPORTING GOANS ON THIS ISSUE? What we are saying is: What difference does it make if MOPA is on PPP model of XYZ model? We don\'t want it. Period. The Navy has to quit Dabolim and hand Goa\'s Civilian Airport back to Goa\'s Civilian Authorit, whether it is after 51 years or not. Te writing is on the wall bold and clear. MOPA WILL GIVE DABOLIM AIRPORT TO THE NAVY ON A SILVER PLATTER FOR NAVY\'S EXCLUSIVE USE. GOANS MUST NOT BE BLIND TO THIS GLARING FACT. GSRP IS NOT. Cheers floriano goasuraj 9890470896 www.goasu-raj.org - Original Message - From: aassoc4...@aol.com To: goancau...@yahoogroups.com Sent: Monday, February 11, 2013 6:25 AM Subject: [goancauses] 'No to Mopa on PPP model' 'No to Mopa on PPP model' February 11, 2013 PANJIM: The protest against the new Greenfield International airport at Mopa is likely to see new wind, with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) now rising up to oppose the project, which will be developed on Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. AAP co-founder Prashant Bhushan on Sunday told a gathering that the party is always against privatization of the project and it will oppose the Mopa airport, if it is proposed to be developed on PPP model. "Party's stand is clear. We would definitely oppose it and will also study all the aspects of the project," he said responding to a question raised by Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardessai. Sardessai pointed out that despite resistance from locals, the government is going ahead with Mopa airport terming it as Greenfield. /> "PPP is nothing but use of public resources to feed private parties," Bhushan said adding 'one cannot displace villagers from their land and make them starve for a living, in the name of a project'. Hundreds of villagers dependent on traditional farming in small holdings and cashew orchards are protesting against the airport. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar during the recently concluded winter session of the State Legislative Assembly had said that Mopa is must for the State along with the existing Dabolim airport. -- Goa Su-Raj Party strongly believes that Parliamentary Elections must be contested by National Parties only AND/OR by a Federation of State Regional Parties. with a reciprocating understanding by the National Parties that the 'State Elections' shall be the prerogative of State Registered Political Parties only. Even then, and in the absence of such a ruling by the Election Commission of India, GSRP would want GOANS who are ERUDITE, knowledgeable about India and its problems, as well as World affairs, 'STATESMEN/WOMEN' , to contest on it's 'TICKET' in the coming 2014 Parliamentary Elections. Let GOA endeavour to send two real Parliamentarians to the House of the People in New Delhi for once.

Dear Ze, I have just been onto You Tube and seen your video of a talk you gave regarding your book on Goan Song. How exciting for you to have it published in what looks like a good hard back and well designed wrapper.Unfortunately, the sound quality of your voice was not good so, especially with my poor hearing (I do wear hearing aids in both ears), I was unable to make out what you were saying much of the time. More importantly, I was wanting to find your old website relating to the fresco you did for the church in Goa but could not find it; does that website still exist? The reason I wanted to log on to the site was to know the name of the church in which you painted the fresco because I have a good friend who is going to Goa for 2 weeks in March on a guided culture tour there.I told her about the fresco you had painted and she would be very interested to visit the church and see the painting especially after telling her about our friendship and the fresco you had painted. Is the church open to the public or do visitors have to obtain permission to visit and, above all, would you send me the name and address of the church? Is it in the city of Goa? I read about New York having dreadful snow storms again and hope you are coping with it all. It is snowing here to-day, but lightly with no wind; I shall send you an attachment photo of it! Hoping to hear from you soon, Abracos, Tonino

[Goanet] Traditional Carnaval with Zomnivoile Khell - Info. pics and videos
updated 11/2/13 Carnaval Khell Zomnivoilo Khell (watch video No 10 & 11 below) All you saw earlier / above (pics and videos) was never been part of Goa Carnival until around mid 70s. Carnaval khell is a sort of street play, performed out in the open, on the ground (no stage) hence it is known as 'Zomnivoilo Khell' (play on ground). Usually its a 3 small plays or 'Partio', there was a time, where they even performed up to 6 plays at a time/place. each play would last around 1 hour. Band consists of Drummer, a Trumpeter and Sax /Clarinet. Usually, they (actors) performed in the middle surrounded by the people (full circle). Inside, they too took places in circle. All of them would seat on the ground (as in Indian Toilet seat mode) and as and when their turns comes up, they will rise up. Eg. One fellow will knock at the door (saying 'O Ghora' meaning 'O House' which is equivalent to 'anybody home?'), he or she will rise up and the dialogue is between the two. All others are seated. To go to one house or place to another, small and typical music sequence was played indicating their movement or journey. No chairs, no table for the actors. Only the musicians used one bench. Majority of the people gathered there would also watch it standing. However, few benches were borrowed /arranged which were meant for benefactors or contributors. These benches would come from people houses, as each house had atleast one bench of av. 6 seater. They used to carry these benches on foot for upto 3 kms distance to the venue. Venue or mandd for such khell was fixed or traditional spot. Each such spot had it’s own name e.g. Ambddeakodde, Ambeakode (legend - such as name of trees, houses, person etc) Each play will start with an opening song called ‘imno’ All other singing was in voices (first-Second) and the songs related to the play performed. It’s like half the conversation though songs. Typical characters were of Bhatkar (Landlord), Mauxi (usually a wicked Aunty), Shett or Konknno (Hindu dress ‘puddvem’), Police, Balla or Sadhu etc. There were no females acting but men dressed as female. Some actors always did female role for which they were good at, year after year. Present day Tiatr (Konkani Drama)originated from this Traditional Khell. Beside, 3 carnival days, such plays were also performed on and after Easter for a week or two. Sadly, not that many people come to watch these form of plays now a days as all of Goa is full of other activities or programme such as floats, Fete, Musical shows etc. TV programmes are also to blame Charges for 3 plays now comes to around 10-12,000 and most last for around 40 minutes each. And it is going up every year. E.g. In the year 2005, it was around 4,000, 2007 it was around 7,000 andin 2010 it was around 9,000 Besides, Mike Charges would be around 1,500, Chairs Rs.5 each. Note: all above info not from any other source, I have been there, I saw it. Will update it further. Jangarh Kalam came into being after J. Swaminathan's discovery of the virtuoso , Jangarh Singh and his subsequent meteoric rise to fame resulting in his tribe following in his footsteps and transposing their art onto paper and canvass. A narrative form of folk art, the vernacular of the soul is expressed in all the brilliant hues of Gondi art and in the myriad interpretations of the artists' defining signature patterns creating a richness of aesthetic forms and styles. These signature styles are the essence of this tribal art form and are used to fill the surface of their decorative motifs. Gond art resonates with a culturally distinctive ethos and draws inspiration from myths and legends to images of daily life, the surrealism of emotions, dreams and imagination. The mythical beasts and the intricate detailing of flora and fauna are the dominant themes that have animated the works of the Gonds as a means to record history. The exquisite beauty and raw power of these works have created a stir in both International and national auctions including Sotheby's and Saffronart . -- Thanks & Regards Miriam Koshy Gallery Gitanjali E-212,31st January Road, Fontainhas,Panjim, Goa-403001 India www.gallerygitanjali.com 00919823572035
