[Goanet] German Bib Band in Goa!

2013-02-26 Thread Jazz Goa

The Phoenix Foundation Big Band from Germany is funded by their arts council to
perform in Goa through an invitation from Jazz Goa, an organization that offers
a platform to local as well as visiting artistes from all over the world. After
over three decades Goa will resound to the sound of a big band in all it's
glory. The best thing about this band is the average age of the twenty two
piece ensemble is twenty years and their repertoire includes a few familiar pop
tracks and movie sound tracks along with intense big band arrangements of jazz
standards.Jazz Goa was approached by Mother Teresa's Roses, an organization
that runs a home for street children in Parra among other charitable works, to
host a show in Goa to create awareness about the work being done by them. Jazz
Goa gladly decided to have the big band perform for a noble cause and clubbed
the two together to present 'Nuns 'N' Roses' a musical extravaganza featuring
the Phoenix Foundation Big
Band at the Jardim Garcia de Orta in Panjim on the 10th of March at 6pm. Entry
is free and some seating arrangement will be made especially for senior
citizens.

[Goanet] i want someone answer my few questions

2013-02-26 Thread Ana Maria Fernandes
1. Why are catholics so disturbed that the pope has put in his resignation. He
is gone old and I know what life is at that age . I have my old 79 year old
mother in law. If she finds it so difficult to remember her own things and mind
you it is a small house with very little responsibilities and imagine a pope 86
years old and has to rule and take decissions of the entire world where
catholics are living. Don't be selfish.
2. why do priests want us to say Rosary instead of asking us to read and
discuss the bible ? Can any one whose brains can very well debate answer me
this question ? I am not trying to spoil your faith .
3. When will catholics learn to love their brothers and sisters around them as
Mary the mother of Jesus did ?

RESPONSE:

My dear Mervyn,

I truly hate to disagree with you, not only because you are a good man but also
because you really mean well.

However, I wonder if you have ever "lived" in Goa. It is worth traveling
'incognito' and like the average 'Joe'. That is when one sees ...as Tom Conti's
character did in 'Saving Grace'.

A few years ago (and I accept that things may have changed since then) I was on
a bus from Margao to Velim. I intentionally took the long route bus which
traveled via Cuncolim.

A chap got on to the, by now, crowded bus at a place called Dramapur. He was
puffing away to glory despite the No Smoking sign in the bus. A woman with a
child in her lap requested him (in Goan Hindi) to stop smoking as "the child
was asthmatic". The chap went ballistic and so did 3 other of the 'ghantis'
(forgive the term) who were already on the bus. He cussed her out in some form
of Hindi and even asked her what she would do if he did not stop?

Where does one turn to, Mervyn? The Police? The bus driver or the 'kilinder'?

Talking about websites and pictures, have you not seen the the zillion pictures
posted by JoeGoaUK? You believe these folks or 'the powers that be' care?
These are the "shareholders" in the voters' bank, Mervyn! Who cares about
Goans in Goa anymore?

You are right, Goans have accepted the Paan and other filth as a way of life.
You believe they have a choice besides resorting to violence? and do they not
patronise the filthy eat places and filthier stalls selling all kinds of stuff
on the roadside?

BTW have you visited Petticoat Lane in East London (UK) or Gerrard St in your
neck of the woods aka Toronto?

best

Statement by Mr Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General, CII

CII welcomes the Railway Budget presented on the floor of the Parliament
today. Under the given economic conditions the Minister has presented a very
balanced set of proposals for the Railways. "The emphasis of the Railway
Minister on financial viability and fiscal discipline of the Railways is
most reassuring and a welcome direction. Financial discipline, safety and
passenger amenities are inherent to the health and condition of this mode of
transport, which is availed by the common man and the Minister has paid due
attention to each", said Mr Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General, CII. With
fuel prices getting deregulated, linking of freight rates to increase in
diesel prices is the correct direction to take and CII commends the
Government for taking this step. "Lower operational ratio announced by the
Minister would help provide for the much needed funds which can help
modernization. The prioritization of 347 projects with assured funding is a
very credible move. CII looks forward to a clear roadmap on PPP for taking
forward some of the more capital intensive projects", Mr Banerjee added.

Hi all,

This Sunday, the 3rd of March, the Goa Bird Conservation Network will
explore the Maina-Curtorim Lake Complex in Salcete. The area is a major
destination for winter migrants, and has been teeming with all manner of
waterfowl, waders and a myriad other kinds of species year after year. The
walk will be led by Philip Fernandes, an avid birder who knows the area like
the back of his hand. Everyone's welcome. Participants are requested to be
at the St. Rita
's Church junction in Maina at 7.30 am sharp. Although we're calling
this a walk, it will involve some driving for short distances between the
different lakes, we will car-pool for that. Please bring along binoculars,
cameras etc. if you possess one. The walk will finish by 12:00 pm. To
confirm participation, reply to this mail, or call on 9890141715.

[Goanet] [JudeSundayReflections] 3rd Sunday of Lent

2013-02-26 Thread Jude Botelho
24-Feb-2013

Dear Friend,

All of us make mistakes and experience misfortunes and we have excuses for our
failure, we tend to blame situations, or events or others for our mistakes. But
we can take responsibility and own our part and change. God desires us to
change, to repent of our mistakes and begin again. He always gives us another
chance. Many saints were sinners who let God change and transform their lives;
we too can. Have a repentant weekend, and change what needs to be changed this
Lent!   Fr. Jude

Sunday Reflections: Third Sunday of Lent: "The God of compassion and second
chances!" 3-Mar-2013
Readings: Exodus 3: 1-8, 13-151 Cor.10: 1-6, 10-12Luke 13: 1-9

Moses had fled Egypt as a failure and was working as a shepherd with his
father-in-law Jethro. As he grazed his flock near Horeb, he comes across a
strange sight of a bush which is burning and as he draws near he encounters God
who reveals himself and asks him to go on a mission to liberate his people from
slavery in Egypt. God has strange and surprising ways of revealing himself to
us. Moses was reluctant to go on God's mission; he felt inadequate and needed
reassurances from God. God ignored his failure, he gave Moses a second chance.
We too are the same, but if God sends us on a mission he also empowers us to
act in His name. If we fail He gives us a second chance.

Second Chancers
History is full of individuals who had their first, second and many other
chances before they succeeded. Henry Ford failed and went broke five times
before he finally succeeded.  Beethoven's teacher called him hopeless as a
composer, but he succeeded. Having gone out of business, Colonel Sanders went
over 1,000 places trying to sell his chicken recipe before he found a buyer.
Seventy years later, at the age of 75, Colonel Sanders sold his Kentucky Fried
Chicken company for 15 million dollars! Walt Disney was fired by a newspaper
editor for lack of ideas. Disney also went bankrupt several times before he
built Disneyland. Charles Darwin, father of the theory of evolution, was
considered a very ordinary boy. Albert Einstein did not speak until he was four
years old, and didn't read until he was seven. His teacher described him as
"mentally slow, unsociable and adrift forever in his foolish dreams." The
University of Bern turned down his Ph.D. dissertation
 as being irrelevant and fanciful.

In today's gospel Jesus is asked about his opinion about an incident that
involves the murder of pilgrims who had gone to Jerusalem to offer sacrifices
in the temple. Apparently, Herod had them massacred and mixed their blood with
that of the animals offered in sacrifice. The one who reported the incident
wanted to know who was guilty and why had this tragedy taken place? What was
the cause of it all? In popular religions all misfortunes were looked upon as
divine punishment for sins. The temptation to reach such a conclusion would be
even greater for the Jews who looked upon material prosperity and a long life
as a sign of divine favour. Jesus rejects outright such an interpretation and
goes beyond this narrow perspective. Jesus refers to the tower at Siloam which
crumbled and fell and killed several people beneath it and asks: Who do you
think was responsible for that? Jesus' reply to the question is that those who
died were not more guilty than the
rest. Mishaps and misfortunes do not indicate guilt! Yet, it is equally
important that sin calls for repentance. Therefore all of us have to respond to
God, repent and change our lives. All of us are called to be responsible and
bring forth the fruit of repentance. Jesus goes on to narrate the parable of
the fig tree that has been planted but is fruitless. The man who had planted it
had been patient for three years coming regularly to see if it would bear
fruit. As it refuses to bear fruit the man asks the worker in the vineyard to
cut it down. It does not deserve to be there in the vineyard. But the man
pleads and asks for one more year of waiting, one more chance, perhaps it will
bear fruit. We are not told what happened because the story of the fruitless
vine is our own story. We are responsible for our lives and for whether we bear
fruit or not. God has been patient with us for a long time but we cannot test
God's patience for ever. We have to be
accountable and responsible to God and for God. Now is the acceptable time,
time is running out; now is the moment of repentance and salvation.

Adding your personal 'signature'
Barbara was about to address 3000 employers of a large supermarket chain in
Midwest U.S.A. Her aim was to regenerate the spirit of the workplace and so
build customer loyalty. And so, basing herself on the wise words of Martin
Luther King Jr. she urged one and all to add a personal 'signature' to their
work, no matter how exalted or lowly it seemed. By way of example, she told her
listeners of an airline pilot, who, after everything is in control, choos

St. Andre: Over 900 citizens disqualified in 2.5 years

from 14.6.10 to 29.9.11  There were about 450 deletions on account of
disqualification (acquiring  Portuguese Passport etc)

Where as upto Dec. 2012 (15 months), there are about 465 more
deletions from the voters list.  Siridao has about 54,
Goa Velha about 110, Agxi 185, Neura/Mandur about 50

Going by above, it appears that Agxi losing average 12 citizens per month.

There were about 50 non-Christians such as Naik, Sawant,
Narvekar, Murgaokar, Cuncolekar, Kudalkar, Oli, Veluskar etc
in the same list. Don’t know if they are disqualified for any other reasons.
But I do come across some Hindus on internet settled in UK etc
Some Punjabi and Nepali names also spotted in the delisted list marked
