Modi sickness hits Goa beach

- Advani stays away on first day, CM backers pin hope on Sangh directive

RADHIKA RAMASESHAN

Panjim, June 7: L.K. Advani managed to cast a pall on the opening day of
the BJP’s session in Goa where Narendra Modi was expected to be anointed
the party’s spearhead for the next general election.

Advani did not show up for today’s office-bearers’ meeting on the eve of
the two-day national executive session because of a “stomach upset and
weakness”.

Late tonight, a source said Advani might skip the entire three-day event.
The source said a decision on Advani’s trip to Goa would be taken tomorrow
morning at 10, “depending on medical advice and his condition that does not
appear bright”.

If Advani does skip the full session, it will be the first time he would
have kept away from such an event since the BJP was formed in 1980.

The expectation here was that Advani, who stepped into patriarchal shoes
after ill health kept Atal Bihari Vajpayee from public life, would
personally ratify the move to anoint Modi as head of the campaign committee
for the approaching general election.

Sushma Swaraj, Advani’s closest political confidant, reportedly stressed to
party president Rajnath Singh that he must not announce anything “major” in
the absence of the veteran. She herself made a point by arriving late at
the office-bearers’ meeting this afternoon.

Advani also ensured that his loyalists Uma Bharti, Jaswant Singh,
Shatrughan Sinha and B.C. Khanduri stayed away in “solidarity”. An Uttar
Pradesh MP, Yogi Adityanath, brought cheer by rooting for Advani for Prime
Minister.

Other than Sushma and Adityanath, few of these acolytes are political
heavy-hitters but they did manage to spoil the mood. “The mood inside was
dismal. We can’t believe the Advani-Modi vibes are so bad,” a source said.

BJP sources said the RSS could be the only catalyst now. The Sangh has
decided to “bless” Modi’s projection.

Sources said Sangh functionaries were “closely watching” Advani’s
responses. If they concluded it was not “worth their while” indulging
Advani, they could “direct” Rajnath to announce Modi’s name as the campaign
panel head in the next two days. “The Sangh is not amused,” a source said.

RSS joint general secretary Suresh Soni had met Rajnath on Thursday. Soni
is said to have agreed “in principle” to Modi’s anointment.

M. Venkaiah Naidu today told journalists that Advani was “unwell”. A member
of Advani’s family called Rajnath yesterday and said he felt “weak” from
the Delhi heat and would skip the first day’s meeting.

“It would be untrue to say that Advani is not disturbed with the kind of
drum-beating (for Modi as the party’s candidate for Prime Minister) that is
going on,” a party source said. “Remember, this is a country where (then
Congress president) Dev Kant Barooah had said, ‘India is Indira, Indira is
India’ (during the Emergency). Indira was routed in the elections that
followed.”

The source added: “In Atalji’s case, the process happened naturally and had
a flavour that is cherished even today. Drum-beating does not necessarily
ensure electoral success.”

A minority in the BJP believes that Modi’s projection could see either a
spurt in seats, or stagnation and even a fall, especially if the Muslims
rallied behind the Congress.

Advani’s absence did not deter Modi’s growing band of cheerleaders today.
Last evening, the meeting’s host and Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar
had started the chorus in favour of his Gujarat counterpart’s elevation.

In 2009, Parrikar, short-listed by the Sangh as a candidate for BJP
president, had blown his prospects by comparing Advani to “pickle gone
sour” and advising him to ride into the political sunset.

Smriti Irani, Rajya Sabha member and the central BJP’s minder for Goa, has
claimed a “groundswell of positive sentiments” in Modi’s favour.

Ironically, Advani was Modi’s prime endorser when the Gujarat chief
minister was up against the wall 11 years ago. That too was in Goa and
Modi’s continuance as chief minister was opposed by then Prime Minister
Vajpayee.

On the eve of the April 2002 national executive meeting, BJP ally Telugu
Desam had lobbed a bombshell by demanding Modi’s removal in view of the
February-March violence against Muslims in Gujarat.

Brajesh Mishra, Vajpayee’s closest aide in the Prime Minister’s Office, had
suggested that Modi’s removal was a given. Modi stayed away from the first
day’s meeting to facilitate “free and frank” discussions.

To Vajpayee’s shock, his closest political confidant, Pramod Mahajan, gave
the first shout in Modi’s favour saying he would not quit no matter who
wanted him to. The rest of the pack followed. Vajpayee stood isolated.
Advani had put up the members to back Modi.

Over a decade later, the roles have reversed in Goa.

Does tiatr find an audience in Europe? What are the logistics involved in
putting up a tiatr abroad? And is it really worth the trouble?Tony Gonsalves:
Once a year, I stage four shows of every tiatr I promote in the UK. It’s a big
responsibility involving a lot of money. With no government support whatsoever,
it is up to the promoter to foot the entire bill for professional fees, visas,
tickets, food, accommodation and other incidentals. I fly the entire troupe
including the musicians and hire a four-bedroom apartment complete with a cook.
My family, my brother Felix, friends and well-wishers also help by
accommodating a few artistes. Sometimes, we do not even break even or recover
our expenses, but our love for Goan culture and the joy on the faces of the

smooth with no harassment, whatsoever. So far I have not faced any problem with
the authorities in the UK or in any of the other countries where I have been
promoting tiatr like Spain, Portugal, Canada, etc.DD: The entire process sounds
like a complex one. How did you get into the promotion of tiatr in the UK and

at Wembley. Being avid fans of tiatr and since there was a considerable Goan
presence in Wembley, in 2004 we embarked on the idea of staging a musical show
in the UK with Lorna, Ben Evangelisto, Norman Cardozo on the keyboards and
others and staged four shows in London, two in Spain and one show each in
Portugal and Canada. Since then I have been endeavouring to stage at least one
tiatr in London each year. This July, I will be fl ying Constantine Crasto’s
troupe to the UK. I also plan to take tiatr to Australia soon and I am in the
process of doing my homework and working out the logistics of staging tiatr in

[Goanet] Water proofing a thriving business - thegoan.net

2013-06-08 Thread Camillo Fernandes

Humid climate, salinity, heavy monsoons, all call for waterproofing, a much
sought after service in GoaBharati Pawaskar / The Goan 08 June 2013When it
rains, it rains cats and dogs in Goa and apart from flooding the roads, gutters
and nullas, it pours in through ceilings and rooftops. It’s the monsoon story
in the state and thanks to the heavenly blessings from the rain Gods above, the
waterproofing industry under the Goan sky is flourishing. The hoardings all over
the state Highway NH-17 cry aloud –‘Ghar mei paani ko ghusne na dena’ and ask
to call Dr Fixit in case of emergencies. Yes, Dr Fixit waterproofing products
are popular among waterproofing contractors who undertake waterproofing
assignments for housing, commercial and industrial structures. These include
waterproofing of basement, sunken slabs of bathroom and toilets, terrace and
other structures in need of waterproofing.“We go for certified vendors who
process the products in accordance with the international quality standards,
longer shelf life, accurate PH value and purity. We test them on various
parameters like accurate composition and effective result before offering them
to our customers,” says a distributor in Panjim who keeps waterproofing
products of various companies. The deteriorating quality of construction as well
as the natural causes like humidity, high water table and salty, saline air
especially in the coastal belt, are to be blamed for the growing need of
waterproofing. The quality of construction material – sand, mettle, granite,
laterite stones and bricks has also deteriorated which reflects in poor
construction. Haste is another factor. If the pace of construction is too fast
it gives little time for curing which gives rise to the need for waterproofing
in a short period of time. The leakage begins with the first rain showers in
some cases. Post construction maintenance is equally important. There are
specialised services and treatments for the roof, side wall, bath, expansion
joint, vertical expansion joint and water tank coating, basement, injection
grouting and swimming pool. “If the waterproofing problems are not attended in
time, the structure poses various dangers; one of it is of short circuit. The
concealed electricity wiring in the walls may spark if the seeped water comes
in contact with live wires,” warns Damodar Yeshwant Dicholkar, proprietor
Yeshwant Interiors in Margao who has diversified into waterproofing a decade
ago and caters to clients in Goa as well as Mumbai.“Most buildings in Goa need
waterproofing, irrespective of when they were constructed. We have come across
cases where the leakage begins the very next year after construction. In some,
the leakages show up immediately after taking possession,” discloses Dicholkar
who is on the panel of SIKA India Pvt Ltd that manufactures waterproofing
products at Verna Industrial Estate. ACC runs a helpline for its consumers
providing the list of cement dealers and reliable waterproofing contractors
like Dicholkar who offers all kinds of services like interiors, exteriors,
restorations, renovations and waterproofing – for new as well as old
constructions. There is a stiff competition in the construction and interior
decoration business but a lot of scope in waterproofing exists as this area
remains untouched. Across Goa there are handful contractors known for their
quality work. They offer specialised services and treatments for the roof, side
wall, bath, expansion joint, vertical expansion joint and water tank coating,
basement, injection grouting and swimming pools. The cost of waterproofing
depends on the intensity of leakage and site condition. A century-old
Portuguese house will leak only if the tiles above break as their side walls
are usually strong and thick. The reasons why a structure falls apart could be
more than one. There is no proper curing. Traditional way of constructing is
still continued which leaves lot of scope for leakage. While casting a slab on
an old property, the use of proper waterproofing additives will minimise the
capillary action. Use of additives and cohesive for both slab as well as
exterior plasters can reduce the possibility of leakage. If the dressing of the
laterite stones is not proper, it results in uneven levels and wherever there
is thick plaster, the chances are more that it would leak. The use of quality
sand is a must too.Five years ago good sand was available for Rs 430 per cubic
metre. The same is now quoted Rs 1700 per cubic metre. The labour was Rs
250-300 which now costs Rs 500-600 per day. The cost of the material counts
along with the construction rate and reflects in the final price of the
property. While reputed real estate developers use quality material and take
care to do the waterproofing themselves, those who have turned builder
overnight want to erect at a cheaper rate and at a faster pace.“My builder
overlooked the need for waterproofing

[Goanet] Questions to Goa's MLA MP!!!

2013-06-08 Thread U. G. Barad
Looks like most congressmen in Goa, these days, have started suffering from
NAMOnia syndrome! Not knowing what to do they have started scratching
where there is no itching!

Few days back, Lourenco, an elected MLA and spokesperson of opposition
party, said that the land acquired during congress regime for developing
golf course at Terekhol in Pernem should be given back to owners of land?
Governemnt should also initiate actions on erstwhile two congress ministers
for acquiring land for golf in Terekol! And BJP government should not
initiate any work in that area!!

On this issue, south Goa MP Francisco Sardinha has evolved a new theory to
proposed golf land! According to him, land allotted to outsiders by
erstwhile Congress government should be taken back by the BJP government
because Goa has now demanded Special Status.

My questions to both Lourenco and Francisco are: How can projects like golf
course be FEASIBLE during congress tenure and become UNFEASIBLE during BJP
time? OR is it because congress party, after their downfall, realized that
they would not get their SHARE from the said project now? Why Lourenco and
Francisco are not naming the erstwhile two congress ministers involved in
golf project at Terekhol? What did Lourenco as elected MLA and Francisco as
elected MP do when congress government had initiated land acquisition for
golf project? Is not this golf issue directly pointing fingers at Goa
congress party indicating that Congress party are NOT GOOD PLANNERS instead
they are GOOD LOOTERS!

Lastly, what has happened to the land given to set up 7 SEZs in Goa! This
question is more pertinent because it was during congress government (during
Rane's regime) that the SEZ proposal in Goa had to be scrapped because of
public outcry! Subsequently congress changed their hands and Digu was
installed as chief minister. For one complete term, what did this change
regime, under Digu, do in getting back the land from SEZs companies?

Looks like, intentionally, both Lourenco and Francisco have forgotten the
famous phrase: You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of
the people some of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all of
the time.

[Goanet] When Raja Sabha nominee of Goa speaks...????

2013-06-08 Thread U. G. Barad
When Raja Sabha nominee Shantaram Naik speaks he conceals more than he
reviles! Yesterday (7/6/2013), in a press conference, he accused chief
minister of Goa for spending public money on advertisement in support of
National Executive meeting of BJP at Goa. While this being true he forgot
that congress party at the center is spending crores of rupees on unwanted
Bharat Nirman campaign - a propaganda campaign of congress party! The
budgetary provision of 58,000 crores for 2011-2012 was already made by then
finance minister Pranab Mukherjee! (Reference:
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/home/union-budget-2011/Highlights-of-Unio
n-Budget-2011-2012/articleshow/7592642.cms) And budgetary provision for
Bharat Nirman campaign for the year 2012 - 2013 and that for 2013 - 2014 is
unbelievably high!

Now my question to MP of Goa Mr. Shantarm Naik: Whose money is being spent
by congress party on Bharat Nirman campaign? Is it not public money that
congress is spending on advertisement? Are states run by congress party not
spending public money for party's campaign when executive/high powered all
India congress (I) meetings/events takes place in those states?

OR are you trying to tell Goans that spending public money is the
prerogative of ONLY Congress party in India! Or are you accusing chief
minister of Goa just because you have come down to Goa and caught up with
NAMOnia Syndrome. If so, I would only say, Please do your homework before
you make unjustifiable comments!

Best regards,

[Goanet] Not an inch more of Goa's land to the Navy or other defence forces -- By Nisser Dias

2013-06-08 Thread Nisser Dias
*By Nisser Dias
 6thJune 2013
*

* *

*Not an inch more of Goa’s land to the Navy or other defence forces*

Till date it was perceived that only lawyers used the ploy to
confuse if they could not convince the judges while presenting their case,
but today it seems that the chief minister of Goa Manohar Parrikar has also
adopted such a strategy over the proposed airport at Mopa vis-à-vis Navy.

Chief minister’s latest approach to convince Goans to accept
his pet project is by confusing them. He told the media that he would make
an offer to the Prime Minister to shift Navy to Mopa and hand over Dabolim
for the expansion of the airport. This to me appears to bring about a
divide among the people leading and supporting the movement because he
feels that south Goa people would accept such a proposal thereby alienating
farmers of Mopa. Manohar Parrikar should have realised that if the people
of Mopa have refused an airport they would never accept the Navy. And the
people of south Goa would not accept this proposal because we are not
interested in giving any more land to the Navy instead our only aim is to
retrieve as much of land that the Navy has invaded all over the state.

But one thing is very clear the movement against airport at
Mopa has rattled the chief minister and that is the reason he has adopted
this devious scheme of urging the prime minister. Question is when have the
BJP and Parrikar started having faith in the Dr. Manmohan Singh whom they
had called a ‘Weak’ prime minister. More than that the delay in floating
Request for Qualification (RFQ) is an indication that chief minister have
realized it would not be healthy for his government to go against the
wishes of the people.

We would welcome and support the chief minister if he initiates
a dialogue with the Defence minister and demand more land for the expansion
of the Dabolim airport but handing even an inch of land to the Navy is out
of the question. Has the chief minister forgotten plight of people visiting
Anjediva island to celebrate the feast. After the island was handed over to
the navy by the Goa government they have disallowed us from celebrating the
visit once a year citing security reasons. So why should Goans allow any
more land to be given to them. Our insistence is get back as much land as
possible.

Former Union minister Ramakant Khalap has also started sounded
his bugle for the proposed airport. It is surprising that he took so long.
During his youthful days his original party the Maharashtra Gomantak Party
(MGP) wanted to merge Goa with Maharashtra and the people of Goa defeated
the move through Opinion Poll. Now septuagenarian Khalap must be dreaming
that at last his party vision must be coming true. Ironically today he is a
spent force and though in the Congress party he does not have much say. His
rumbling must be because of the Lok Sabha election ticket which are slated
next year.

Just like Khalap said that the Navy is not a pumpkin in Manohar
Parrikar’s backyard to be shifted wherever he wants, I would like to remind
Ramakant Khalap that Goa was not MGP’s fiefdom to be merged with
Maharashtra at that time. Goans it is said that have a short memory and
forgive easily but in the case of the MGP the urge to merge Goa with
Maharashtra will never be forgotten. Ramakant Khalap who is in the evening
of his political career should retire in Maharashtra which would
undoubtedly be beneficial not only to Goa but also to the neighbouring
state.

Convenor of Goa for Dabolim Only Fr. Eremito Rebello has a very
good suggestion his demand is force the Navy to handover 5 lakhs sq. mtrs.
of adjoining land to the Airport Authority of India and Dabolim’s capacity
would be increased to accommodate 20 million passengers a year.

But the problem is that both the ruling BJP and the Opposition
Congress want the airport at Mopa because they have stakes in the land
there. The other elected representatives that are making noise are those
who do not have stake there. And the other four who are mum are the three
alter boys namely Avertano Furtado, Caitu D’silva and Benjamin D’silva
along with BJP minister Alina, wife of late Mathany Saldanha.

It is high time that chief minister Manohar Parrikar abandons
his pet project and apply his mind to strengthen the existing
infrastructure. It is more than a year since he is in the driver’s seat,
but the bus-stand in the capital city of Panjim is in a pathetic condition.
Similar is the case of the bus-stand in the commercial city of Margao. It
is classic case of the chief minister thinking of the tourists five years
hence but not giving a thought to alleviating the suffering of his own
people in Goa who have to commute to and fro.

Last week the false ceiling of the casualty of Goa Medical
College (GMC) came crashing down due to leakage. The BJP government under

Dear jc

Do you not realize that Santoshbab is on the rebound after his old love Fr
Ivo kicked the bucket? The poor guy is desperately looking for a new mogi
and Conbab is the closest he can find so far although I agree that Conbab
is nowhere as good a match to old Fr I.

Anyway please give Santoshbab the time and space find his true faffy and
stop playing the spoilsport. Bah!!

SHOCKERUNBELIEVABLE SCORELINE.
Sports Authority of India 22 beat Goa Hockey 1 at the 3rd National Senior
Hockey Championships going on in Pune. Didn't see any reports on the hockey
tournament in Herald or the Navhind Times. Hockey has been dying, if not
dead, in Goa for years so why send these lambs for the slaughter.

[Goanet] Journalist Savio Correa corrects a 26 year wrong - www.thegoan.net

2013-06-08 Thread Camillo Fernandes

The Goan helps Citizen journalist Savio Correa corrects a 26 year old
wrong
IATG 0017 Correa’s RTI on The Goan forces the Goa Government to
withdraw a 1987 letter granting blanket permissions to MPT

Team Goan ,Vasco 08 June 2013

Savio Correa is I am the Goan (IATG) # 017.
But that’s what is there in his citizen journalist card of The Goan. His
identity though will now be of a man who has managed to correct a 26 year old
wrong. In probably one of best fallouts of citizen journalism, the Mormugao
Port Trust (MPT) will now have to obtain prior permission from state government
authorities to carry out any construction in its operational area.

In a letter dated May 23, the directorate
of municipal administration (DMA) has directed MPT to submit a layout and
building plans of the area allotted to MPT, along with a master plan for future
development to the statutory authorities. MPT has also been instructed not to
undertake any construction without approval from the municipality and planning
development authority (PDA).

Expressing satisfaction that his patient
perseverance had borne fruit, IATG 017 Savio Correa recollects his RTI which
The Goan had published on October 27, 2012. In his expose on I am The Goan,
Correia wrote, “It’s a classic case of bureaucratic red-tape, the left hand not
knowing what the right hand is doing. The Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) has a slew
of nine projects in its proposed expansion with investment of over Rs 1000
crores to boost its capacity that will ease congestion and allow bigger ships
to dock. Shockingly, the state government, urban local bodies and town planning
authorities are in the dark about these mega-projects coming up within their
jurisdiction and have not been consulted by MPT while planning the projects.”

But none of this came easy. Correia’s
expose came in the wake of MPT turning a deaf ear to the Vasco citizens’
efforts to contain coal dust pollution in the Port Town. The authorities in the
Municipality and State Administration expressed their inability to do anything
and refused to reveal why they were not taking action against MPT or shooting
down its’ environmental efforts till Correia’s RTI exposed their silence. Vasco
has been suffering due to a previous Goa Government letter no. 4/12/82-LAWD
that was issued on January 30, 1987 by then Vasco Planning and Development
Authority to MPT which said, “In case of construction for port operations
within its operational area, the MPT need not obtain any prior permission
before execution of any works both VPDA (now MPDA) and MMC be informed in
advance about the works being carried out”. Savio Correia’s RTI revealed that
“state government and urban local bodies are blissfully unaware of any of the
mega-projects, and hence are unprepared to handle their demands and possible
impact/fallout on existing infrastructure”.

“Concerted efforts by a bunch of Vascokars
bore fruit. The Power Minister, Milind Naik, played a major role. And of
course, The Goan’s story about the RTI on I am the Goan on October 27, 2012 was
a great help too,” says Savio Correia. The Goan followed up his RTI in its own
investigations and exposed how MPT’s projects were cropping up without seeking
government permissions, whether it was the coal berth adjacent to City Center
or the hospital opposite MMC’s garbage site. The IATG expose has now helped
Vasco assert itself in any project that comes up in MPT’s precincts.
