[Goanet] PortGoesas LIVE
About: PORTUGOESAS are the soprano Veronica Milagres da Silva and the mezzo-soprano Carolina Figueiredo, accompanied on piano by Carlos Garcia. PORTUGOESAS explore the traditional and classical Goan music, giving it an unique touch while respecting its roots Description Two singers, a soprano and a mezzo, decided to bring to life the music of Goa, a part of their cultural and ethnic heritage. This former Portuguese colony in India has a rich repertoire of traditional, classical and church music, yet to be disclosed. It is this blending of Western and Eastern cultures, with Portuguese and Indian themes, that gives it variety and uniqueness. The research conducted by Veronica Milagres da Silva and Carolina Figueiredo on this subject brought about a repertoire covering their own interpretations of traditional Goan songs, transmitted mainly through oral tradition, such as the mando, the dulpod and the dekni, among others. This study includes compositions of religious nature and tries to make known to the public classical pieces composed by Goan musicians, such as an unpublished mass in Konkani. [Goanet] No Respect For The Dead
It sickens me to see dead bodies in India lying uncovered in public places after accidents or mass incidents. The latest Mid-Day Times coverage of stampede deaths at a Madhya Pradesh temple gathering on the last day of the Navratri festival shows a picture of dead bodies lying uncovered on a bridge with gawkers milling around. What beats me is why these bodies are not completely covered in white cloth and why the area is not cordoned off for police investigation and subsequent process. Were the organizers unprepared for such scenarios even though this is a regular feature of mass religious gatherings in India. In this case the crowd was estimated at 250K people with an 85 dead body count. Scores more jumped into the flowing river to escape the melee and they will add to the dead. Did the authorities not insist on disaster management procedures before permission was given for the gathering. It is not unusual for robbing and looting of corpses before the police arrive. Is the Indian public completely devoid of the least bit of decorum and civic sense. Is it dog eat dog just because the population is a horrendous 1.2 billion and value for life has pro-rated southwards? A test for the new Goan Chief Secretary Anthony de Sa and it appears from this incident that same old, same old prevails. Those 85 probably lived in misery and from the looks of it, died in it too. Roland. Toronto.

[Goanet] [JudeSundayReflections] 29th Sunday of the Year in Ordinary Time
11-Oct-2013 Dear Friend, We know from experience that when we want something we keep at it all the time. If something is not very important then we may mention it once or twice and then we forget about it. Do we request something only for ourselves or also for others? If God is our Father, can we not intercede for our brothers and sisters? Are not their needs our concerns as well? We can build our community by praying for others. Have an intercessory weekend, pleading for others with God! Fr. Jude Sunday Ref. 29th Sun. of the Year: The Prayer of Intercession is always heard! Ask with faith! God always hears! 20-Oct-2013 Readings: Exodus 17: 8-13;2 Timothy 3: 14 -4: 2;Luke 18: 1-8; In the first reading from Exodus we read of Israel entering into battle for the first time in its history. Israel's way to the Promised Land was blocked by the Amelekites and Moses orders Joshua to fight them. Joshua does. Meanwhile, while the battle rages Moses looks at the battle scene from a hilltop. Moses then raises his hands in prayer and whenever his hands are raised Israel prevails in battle and whenever he lowers his hands the Amelekites prevail. So Moses' companions support him so that he can pray continuously and victory is assured. Prayer Power Some years ago Guideposts magazine printed a remarkable story. It was about a young high school teacher named Mary. She wanted so much to succeed as a teacher. But a student named Bill was turning her into a nervous wreck. One morning, before school began, Mary was sitting at her classroom desk writing something in shorthand. Suddenly Bill appeared at the door. What are you writing? he asked as he approached her desk, I'm writing a prayer to God, she said, Can God read shorthand? he joked. He can do anything, said Mary, even answer this prayer. Then she tucked the prayer inside her Bible and turned to write on the chalkboard. As she did, Bill slipped the prayer from her Bible into his typing book. Twenty year later Bill was going through a box of his belongings that his mother had stored in her attic. He came across his old typing book. Picking it up, he began to thumb through it. Lo and behold, he found the shorthand prayer. It was yellow and faded with age. Bill stared at the jottings on the paper and wondered what they said. He took the prayer and put it in his wallet. When he got to his office, he gave the prayer to his secretary to decipher. She read it and blushed. It's rather personal, she said. I'll type it out and put it on your desk when I leave tonight. That night Bill read the prayer. It said: Dear God, don't let me fail this job. I can't handle my class with Bill upsetting it. Touch his heart. He's someone who can become either very good or very evil. The final sentence bit Bill like a hammer. Only hours before, he was contemplating making a decision that would commit him to a life of evil. During the next week Bill took the prayer out several times to read it. To make a long story short, that prayer caused Bill to change his mind about doing what he was contemplating. Weeks later Bill located his old teacher and told her how her prayer had changed his life. Mark Link in 'Sunday Homilies' Today's gospel speaks of the need of perseverance in prayer. To illustrate this, Jesus tells the parable of the unjust judge and the persistent widow. She seeks judgement against her enemy, but the judge does not have time to listen to her. But she kept at him until he finally helped her. In the parable the focus is clearly on the widow. The unjust judge is the foil that makes her greatness stand out; he is not important in himself. We must certainly not identify him with God. Though he ends like God -giving justice to the widow, that is the only resemblance. The widow is in fact a wonderful person, one of the great characters of the gospels. The widow is poor. She cannot back her claims for justice with money or influential people; her power lies entirely in her moral qualities, her passion and her perseverance. But she believes that her cause is just and that ultimately justice will prevail. She stands as a symbol of hope; of the poor and helpless who rely solely on God to grant them justice. Jesus says in conclusion, Will not God grant justice to his chosen ones who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long in helping them? I tell you God will quickly grant justice to them. God is faithful in answering our prayers, although the answers may take time and may not quite be what we expect. God's time may not be our time, but in His time He will answer our prayer. Prayer is the key... Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the Indian nation and the chief architect of its freedom from colonial rule and independence, was a secret admirer of Jesus Christ. Gandhi used to read the gospels and was particularly fascinated by the Sermon on the Mount. Mahatma Gandhi was first

Better music does not make a better world. From Jesus' day til now there has always been the music of the day. It relieved the stress, celebrated life and death. Commemorated the occasions, offered a platform for philosophy and it forever evolves. New instruments, new concepts, new techniques, new technology (from log drums with goat skin heads to layered maple, birch and bubinga veneered drum shells with chrome hardware). There are literal music libraries we can access now from almost any point in world history and get a good understanding of how the earth and it's civilizations were at any given time. And we're talking about beautiful music (in the eye of the beholder). I love music and yet with this archival history of art, exponentially, this world and it's civilization are worse. [Goanet] History surrounding the statue of Infant Jesus at Colva
History surrounding the statue of Infant Jesus at Colva It is a unique tradition at Colva, where the FAMA, the first day of the Novena is celebrated with the pomp and grandeur of the feast The statue is retrieved from the niche in the altar following a peculiar tradition and custom The feast day, thereafter is a tame affair. Unprecedented crowds, a virtual sea of humanity gather for kissing of the statue, which starts early morning and continues late at night .They will not extend the kissing of the statue beyond Fama day. Elaborate arrangements are in place to facilitate kissing of the image of Infant Jesus, which is attributed of miraculous blessings by the surging crowds of the faithful Queen Catherine of Austria, wife of King Joao III of Portugal donated statue of Madona with the statuette of child Jesus in her bosom to the Colegio de S Paulo-O-Novo(old Goa0| The church was demolished and Fr Antonio Vales, a Jesuit was permitted to carry the statuette of Child Jesus to Mozambique on his transfer It was lost due to ship wreck but mysteriously surfaced on the shores on the island of Sena. In the year 1643 Fr Bento Fereira brought it to Goa, when he was appointed the Vicar of Our Lady of Snows, Raia and then kept it in safe custody of a colleague on his movement out of Goa.Fr Bento was posted as the Vicar of Church at Colvain 1648 and carried it to Colva. Fr Dionisio De Passos who ,was the successor started the devotion and kissing of the statue after the mass on Thursdays. Fama of Colva, as of to-day was conceived as the popular response In 1772 due to conflict between Archbishop, the Jesuits left the churches and carried this statue of Infant Jesus to Rachol .After prolonged discussions, negotiations, the statue was finally brought to Colva Church on December 11, 1725. The Jesuits filed and won the suit for custody and thus carried it once more to Rachol, where the original image is safely ensconced for veneration The Archbishop, Ignacio de Sana Teresa between 1729 -1740 authorised replica of the original Statuette The original diamond ring is still adorns the statue at Colva People wonder why in the spirit of reconciliation the original statue at Rachol cannot be returned to Colva, where the devotion is flourishing and faithful throng the place in unbelievable numbers Nelson Lopes Chinchinim

[Goanet] Some Facts About Conversions In Goa
I am reading a book by Delio de Mendonca published in 2002, a Jesuit and former Director of Xavier Centre of Historical Research at Alto Porvorim Goa. This is a serious and unbiased treatise on conversions and citizenry of Goa under Portugal from 1510 to 1610. Many passages had me in splits and will have a similar effect on those who see the humorous side of everything. Of special interest to readers who have a fondness for history, this subject will evoke much surprise and bring in question many myths not the least of which is that Francis Xavier in his travels to Goa, preached the Christian religion and Hindus in their thousands lined up to convert or that a sword was held (in all or most cases) to make people convert to the new religion. Here is an excerpt, words in parentheses and italics mine, for context, emphasis or an aside: Some months before the arrival of the ships from Portugal (of the new administration, since the governor's position was for a period of 3 years after which he and his retinue returned to Portugal), the Hindus used to go to the firm land to consult their sorcerers and astrologers to find out about the number of ships and the kind of new government that would follow. Some gaunkars or local residents believed that their situation could change or improve with the arrival of another viceroy or governor, but others expressed strong views on the subject, namely, that the civil authority was not responsible for conversions, but the priests of the Society of Jesus or the Jesuits. The locals argued that this religious group and others would always remain among them. Therefore sooner or later they would have to become Christians. However the religious orders were not always powerful as they wished to be, or as the locals believed them to be. Each religious order had its moments of prosperity and decadence, and they functioned accordingly. The Portuguese missionary activity was intense and extremely aggressive in the middle of the sixteenth century. The religious orders were engaged in competitive conversion activity, resulting in conflicts among themselves, since the royal financial assistance to each religious order depended on the number of conversions they reported. They were missionaries who were out to convert everything and everybody for the militant church. The Jesuits spoke often of missionaries with a 'vocation for India', meaning zealous persons with a proselytizing mentality, having great zeal and enthusiasm to instruct and convert Hindus. Intellectual talents were not demanded from them. But some missionaries overseas had complained that many religious men sent to India lacked learning. Fr. Nicolau Lanciloto, a Jesuit, wrote in 1545 against sending ignorant missionaries to Goa, because there were already many here. But it seems he was referring to the lack of skilled administrators to govern the Society of Jesus, and not so much to the missionaries directly involved in the work of conversion,* for in this field anybody would be usefu*l. Nevertheless, a good number of missionaries sent to India were the best that Europe could provide. Francis Xavier demanded from a candidate who claimed to have a 'vocation for India' the following profile: he should not be a young man but between 30 and 40 years of age possessing all virtues, but especially the virtue of chastity, *since occasions to sin against it presented themselves everywhere. The heat and the licentious life in Goa, offered sensual temptations not only to the European layman but to the religious person alike *(perhaps contemporaries are only following the old model)*. The climate of India being unfavourable to the observance of chastity imposed a heavy burden on the spirit. *This requirement might have been strongly present in other religious orders too. Some Franciscan missionaries turned up as solders and captains in time of war and after war several soldiers entered religious orders, and strangely even during peace time some missionaries went about the town exhibiting their weapons. Five religious with the cross in one hand and a sword in the other accompanied the captain of Bardez, some religious men went about with arms in Goa in 1557, to the extent of making the Hindus remark that the bottos (Hindu priests) of the Portuguese made good soldiers. No wonder, then that the monasteries needed to have a prison for their in-disciplined clergy. The constitutions of the Archdiocese of Goa (1568) decided against the priests carrying weapons, settling disputes by use of arms, and threatening or hurting anyone with such objects. *Some members of these religious orders said masses for six or seven years without being dutifully ordained priests.* * * Soldiers who fought in wars offered themselves as candidates for religious life, despite the canonical impediment involved. It is probable that they entered religious life not for the priesthood but rather for brotherhood, for which there was no canonical impediment. Francisco

Re: [Goanet] Offtopic: Fighting a losing battle
Folks, Instead of sticking to Ana Maria's post, jc decides to spew the below: Besides, there are all kinds of (possibly wannabe doutors but couldn't) who spout (even partisan) nonsense about healthcare They are the ones, I submit, who are driving up the complexity and cost of healthcare for the doentes. It is obvious from his above quote, that he does not support the healthcare measure passed by president Obama. That is understandable. However, he has not given one good reason to back his reasoning. Under normal circumstances, I'd let this one pass. Because the above comment is at least partially attributed to me, I am taking the liberty to reproduce it in this thread - where it rightfully belongs - and rip him even more The gentleman from Bahamas, it appears, does not like the idea of having everybody insured in the US. It is clear where his main interests lie - that is, he would be happy for people of his ilk to be able to squeeze every penny out of non insured folks who are grossly overcharged. Let me drill down a bit more to explain this phenomenon with a real life example. After a recent annual checkup, my daughter's pediatrician sent in a bill for $630. Because my family is insured, my insurance company paid in $211 and I had to foot in a copay/deductible of $84. So what happened to the remaining $335 that the doctor charged? Well, they just wrote it off ! But why? It turns out, the insurance company has a deal with the doctor to charge only a mutually agreed rate. So what would be the situation had I been un-insured? Well, I'd have to cough up every penny of the $630 that he originally charged !!! Isn't there something fundamentally wrong with this picture? Had every doctor in the US charged reasonable fees for the services, people would probably not have gone through a middle man for routine care, such as an insurance company. By having the insurance company decide how much the doctor is going to be paid, the doctor is probably sqeezed too. In an ideal situation, people would have to purchase only catastrophic health insurance, which is usually cheaper than regular insurance and pay the full fee to the doctor for routine care - assuming it is somewhere between $300 and $400 - in my example above. BTW, our pediatrician is a very fine gentleman. He is an awesome doctor and we are very happy with him. It is not his fault that he charged $630. Almost every doctor in the US is over charging and then let the insurance company compute the final payments. Which brings us to another good reason to have insurance to rein in the costs! So coming back to my disagreement with jc's point of contention - one of the reasons costs are controlled in the US, is because the insurance companies set a max rate. If people stay un-insured, the doctors have a field time charging whatever comes to their mind ! I challenge jc to revert back with one good example as to why Obamacare is bad for the patients. Jim F New York. Note: I am not one of those wanna be doctors. I could have been whatever I wanted to be. I chose to do what I do and I am extremely happy with my decision. There are many FATORs out there, who became DOUTORs, only because their parents were one or because they happened to come from privileged families. Many others became DOUTORs because of their social standing with the Portuguese in Goa, that allowed them to have a better life than the rest of the masses. Now that the Portuguese are gone, many of these folks fund their children's doutorship by sending them to neighboring places like Hubli, Dharwad, Belgaum etc - where they pay their dues and become DOUTORs !!! Why send them to neighboring ghatti regions to become DOUTORs? Of course, they couldn't compete with Goans with higher IQ to get admissions within Goa !!! Please don't give me the crap that every DOUTOR is a genius. [Goanet] Dog bites 16 in Margao
The Chinese today eat good Pampas beef and their roads are laden with Rolls Royce. BC A stray dog bit 16 people within about 90 minutes in the Agalli/Gogol area in Margao this afternoon. Victims included women and children. A recently-married female victim had some flesh of her leg so torn off that it left the bone exposed. Another victim was said to be a migrant from the North East who works locally as a *Chinese cook*. Without meaning to trivialise the tragedy, it might have crossed the cook's mind that while people eat dogs in his parts and in China, dogs eat people in Goa. When will the charade of Goa's animals rights NGOs begin making a difference to the stray animal menace, and increase security to innocent passers-by?
[Goanet] Why is there objection?
On the one hand, I have read reports of groups, including Christian, complaining about commercialisation of education. And on the other hand there is objection like the ones we see in this article. Best regards, U. G. Barad Christian missionary schools oppose Rajasthan School Act 2013 Author: TNN Publication: The Times of India Date: October 8, 2013 URL: http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2013-10-08/jaipur/42827999_1_fee -structure-catholic-schools-private-unaided-schools Christian missionary schools have opposed the Rajasthan School Act 2013 (fees regulation) calling it a violation of constitutional provisions that safeguard minority institutes. They claimed that the Constitution guarantees them complete freedom from government interference. The Roman Catholic Diocesan Education Society, a body of Catholic schools held a meeting on Saturday evening to chalk out the strategy to fight against the move. The body decided to give a representation to the education department urging them to keep them out of the ambit of the Act. C K Punnoose, vice-principal, St Xavier's School quoted article 31 (1) of the Indian Constitution says all minorities based on religion and language shall have the right to establish and administer educational institutions of their choice. The fee structure of missionary schools is already minimal and going below the existing fee structure would affect the quality of education, argued Punnoose. The bill in particular says that a fee committee headed by retired high court judge will decide the fees of each school on the basis of facilities and quality of education they are offering. There are around 150 such schools in the state. Missionaries have stated that if government continues to pressurize them, they would not hesitate to challenge it in court. President of society for private unaided schools in Rajasthan, Damodar Goyal said, The society will take up the issue at a higher level to protect the rights of minority institutes in the state. Further, the Act makes it mandatory for schools to publish the details of the fee structure with a full breakup including tuition fees.

[Goanet] Goanet Reader: It is impossible to restrict young Goans to live in Goa and build careers there -- Kenelm Lopes, Bangalore (Remediana Dias, Goanet)
It is impossible to restrict young Goans to live in Goa and build careers there -- Kenelm Lopes, Bangalore Says Kenelm Lopes: The biggest secret of success lies in your attitude to your work. It's your attitude that matters the most. I never count the difficulties, the hurdles, the problems I may face in taking up a particular task. I believe in giving my best in life irrespective of the consequences and it is this attitude of mine which helps me to reach out to fellow Goans in Bangalore, says Kenelm Lopes. The Goan networker in Bangalore talks about his interests, priorities and what makes him, in a tete-a-tete with Remediana (Remy) Dias, for Goanet. RD: Tell us about yourself. -- I grew up in Goa in a family that brought us up with in the old ways that center around love, respect and giving not only within the family itself but also to others outside it. My father worked for the Directorate of Accounts and my mother was a school teacher. And like most teachers' kids, we were taught that the pursuit of knowledge is above all, above fame, and above wealth. I did rather well academically in my school days, studying at various institutions around Panjim such as Don Bosco's, People's and Sharada Mandir. I excelled at elocution, debates and writing. I even managed to get a few of my articles published. Most of these interests continue till date. I graduated with distinction from PCCE (the Padre Conceicao College of Engineering, Verna, Goa) and as a fresh electronics and telecommunications engineer started my career in RD at D-Link (based in the Verna industrial estate). More than a decade later I now work in Bangalore for a company called TE Connectivity. Over the years, through my good fortune, I have had exposure to many developing technologies and am today at least knowledgeable if not a domain expert in fiber optics, high speed transmission methodologies and product design. I travel all over India in my present role presenting on the latest technologies in addition to our product lines. RD: What sets you apart from others? -- Perhaps an odd combination of old fashioned values, exposure to the latest technologies in my domain, a deep belief in God, experience mingling with people of diverse cultures and beliefs and a fierce love for Goa. And, in a lighter vein, I am probably the only person named ‘Kenelm’ in India. RD: What are your hobbies? What do you do in your spare time? -- I read voraciously. I love to write and blog. At present I am working on a book of satirical short stories based in Goan situations which I hope to publish soon. I love meeting people and never miss an opportunity to discuss politics, religion or issues pertinent to Goa. I love looking for antiques and spend quite a bit of time improving on and restoring my ancestral home in Goa. And yeah, I love exotic cooking but a lot less than I love fine dining. RD: Are you a member of any associations? What is your role in it? -- I am a member of the Karnataka Goan Association. When my job required less travel, I used to do their newsletter and assist with their events. I am rather proud of my efforts in bringing new youth from Goa but working in Bangalore into the KGA. I also worked with Rene Barreto, the founder of World Goa day and the World Alliance of Goan Associations, for a year and brought out four issues of the *Global Goenkar*, their Newsletter. Though I am unable to spare as much time, I am in touch and continue to work with Rene. RD: Your vision for a unified world? -- I believe things like borders and boundaries are just lines drawn on a map to suit a certain agenda in some point in history. It is foolish to stereotype people based on where they come from. In a Goan context, I find many people who label themselves as true Goans citing their birth. This may be a good thing but it is a very myopic perspective. Any person who loves and contributes towards saving and protecting Goa is Goan, far far more than any naturally born Goan who shames or loots the people and land of his birth. RD: What is the secret of your success? -- Without doubt, my mother who went to heroic lengths to bring up very well even in sometimes very difficult and challenging situations. There is much I am still learning from her even now. I have had a charmed life and have been blessed by God

A month after the CBI closed the disproportionate assets case against Mulayam Singh Yadav, his arch rival Mayawati is likely to be given a clean chit by the federal investigating agency in a similar case. While speculation is rife that this closure is the Congresss precursor to stitching up an alliance with the BSP, a snapshot of both these cases reveals that not just today, but at every step in the past too, the nature and timing of CBIs actions, have coincided to suit political requirements of the ruling regime.
