Re: [Goanet] Tributes to late comedian Anthony Mendes of Amchem Noxib - timesofindia.com
He was immensely popular on the Goan stage in Bombay during the fifties and sixties, until he died. A tiatr at Bangwadi or St Mary's school hall would be full house if he was on the cast. As comedic on the screen as he was on stage, he would evoke roars of laughter without uttering a word, as the author of the article indicates. He was to Konkanwood (my phrase for the tiatr) as Charlie Chaplin was to the black and white silent screen whom AM imitated in dress but not in style, which was entirely his. Serious and comic if one can be both in real life, AM was a singular, lovable character. I remember a particular incident. I was dragged along by my parents to see one of his tiatrs at St Marys. They were not overly fond of this form of entertainment but being a quiet Sunday and featuring AM must have been their incentive. I was about 10 or 11 without knowing much of Konkani let alone the quick dialogue on the stage. After it was over, outside the doors stood AM to meet some of the audience. He came over to my father whom he knew in passing as AM was a frequent visitor to Greaves Cotton where my father then worked. Seeing my glum face he asked me why I was unhappy. I told him I didn't understand his play. Immediately he started random miming and doing some sleight-of-hand magic which involved touching my face and collar. He had me in in splits for ten minutes or so and then left to another section of the departing audience. When I returned home I found five rupees in my shirt pocket. Guess he meant to refund the price of my ticket in his inimitable way. Roland. The Goa Su-Raj Party - GSRP strongly protests Goa Government's decision to allow Panchayat Elections to be fought on Party lines. This is one issue that Goa Su-Raj Party has been born to protect the "Self-Governing" bodies likes Panchayats and Zilla Panchayat from the vagaries and manipulations of lost political ethics. When GRSP was born, it was decided that no Executive Member of the Party would/should contest Panchayat -Zilla Panchayat Elections. To give credence to this resolution, one of GSRP's founder member who was a Sarpanch of a Panchayat had to observe abstinence from filing nomination for the 2002 Panchayat Elections. GSRP has been against registered and recognized political parties claiming panchayat victories for their respective panels. As according to GSRP, it is enough that the political atmosphere has been vitiated through vote-bank politics of Goa Legislative Assembly Elections where norms of effective governance have been put to the wind by offering money and goodies to voters to vote in their favour. It is important that self-governing bodies like Panchayats be protected from this rat-race, even tough this rat-race in the elections of self-governing bodies has surpassed the Assembly Elections rat-race. It must be remembered that once upon a time, a creditable personage of a village was required to be coaxed to file his/her nomination for Panchayat Elections. Today, winning a Panchayat election has become prestigious, not for anything else but to make money at the cost of tax-payers by bending rules and getting away with it. Therefore, this Party is adamant that the Panchayat Raj Act must be amended to hold the Sarpanch accountable for any and all illegalities. Since this is not happening and is not going to happen in the near future, Panchayats have become the training grounds for corrupted leaders who will one day stake their claim for the Legislative Assembly seats. If Goa is to preserve the self-governing atmosphere of the Panchayats, the Panchayat Raj Act, 1994 must be amended in a jiffy to hold the Sarpanch totally accountable with prescribed penalties, even jail terms for violations, and, ban Party Politics in local self-governance body elections entirely. Goa Su-Raj Party has vowed to see that this will be done, and done promptly and effectively so that the honourable atmosphere of clean governance is not only seen to exist but be seen to be working for the benefit of the Goan people at large. Afterall, Politics effects our daily lives. And, handing over this important aspect in the hands of wayward persons, un-regulated and un-hindered, and on the contrary, pofusely promoted, is nothing but akin to gaining a SELF-GOAL. for Goa Su-Raj Party-GSRP Sd/- Floriano Lobo Gen. [Goanet] A GENETIC BASIS FOR ALCOHOLISM : SHOULD GOA TAKE THE LEAD AND ESTABLISH A CHAIR AT GOA UNIVERSITY OR GOA MEDICAL COLLEGE?
Researchers say alcoholism and anxiety could be linked in a destructive loop SEEDMAGAZINE.COM OCTOBER,25,2013, ISSUE. You don’t have to be a scientist to know that, like height, good teeth, and a strong back, alcoholism runs in families. Years of identical-twin and inheritance studies have confirmed conventional wisdom, but alcoholism’s exact genetic underpinning has, so far, remained a mystery. Recently, a group of researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago demonstrated a possible genetic basis for alcoholism. They showed that a strong preference for alcohol can be linked to genetically-low levels of two proteins in the brain—neuropeptide Y (NPY) and cyclic AMP responsive element binding protein (CREB)—and that a deficiency of these proteins relates to anxiety. According to their study, when someone prone to anxiety consumes alcohol, he self-medicates by raising the level of these proteins in the brain, thereby decreasing anxiety. For the study, published in the October issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, professor Subhash Pandey selectively bred two groups of rats: some with a strong preference for alcohol, and some with no preference for alcohol. He found that rats who voluntarily drank more alcohol had low levels of two proteins that affect the amygdala, an area of the brain responsible for emotional processing of sensory input. He also observed that these rats exhibited behavior indicative of anxiety. When these rats drank alcohol, the levels of the proteins increased, and the anxious behavior stopped. “They may be drinking to self-medicate,” Pandey said in a telephone interview. “These rats are drinking alcohol to increase the levels of [the two proteins].” Pandey was able to achieve the same soothing effect by directly injecting the rats’ central amygdalas with the protein NPY, or with a chemical that activates the other protein, CREB. He also observed that when he injected a CREB inhibitor into the brains of the rats with no preference for alcohol, those rats then became anxious and started drinking. After prolonged exposure to alcohol, the rats with no initial preference for alcohol began to exhibit the same anxious behaviors and low protein levels as the alcohol-preferring rats. Those rats had become addicted to alcohol. Pandey said that humans produce these same proteins, and a protein deficiency would cause high levels of anxiety in people as well as in rats. “In humans, the high anxiety level causes high alcohol intake,” Pandey said. “This is a very good model for mimicking the human situation.” Gary Wand, a professor of endocrinology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, published an editorial on Pandey’s study in the same issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation. Wand said that past studies on alcoholism have mostly focused on the positive rewards of alcohol: the buzz and sense of well-being a person feels after drinking. Pandey’s study stands out for looking at alcohol use as a remedy for the specific problem of anxiety. Wand believes a genetic disposition to crave either the positive rewards of alcohol, or its anxiety-lowering ability, can lead to alcoholism. However, he holds that environmental factors such as daily life events and early childhood experiences also play a role in determining who will become an alcoholic. “We know that upwards of 50 percent of the determinants for alcohol dependence are genetic in origin,” Wand said over the phone. “Assuming that there can be genetic differences in how [the two sections of the brain that control reward and anxiety] activate, that can create a vulnerable substrate for abuse. That vulnerable substrate is created in part by genetics and in part by environment.” Originally published October 3, 2005 THE GENETIC BASIS OF ALCOHOLISM:SHOULD GOA TAKE THE LEAD TO ESTABLISH A CHAIR AT GOA UNIVERSITY AND/OR GOA MEDICAL COLLEGE ? [Goanet] A slew of pictures showcasing Goa's Mapusa forward looking Kabamba Terminus and the RTO Office
Dears, Courtesy the new/present dynamic Assistant Director of Transport, Mapusa Mr. M.M. Pilankar a guided tour of the present state of RTO offices was showcased. This status will come in handy to see if this ADT, Mapusa, means business to deliver a more modernized RTO Offices before his time comes up to move on. A note must be taken that Mr. Pilankar has a Midas touch and has left RTO precincts in a better and/or well to do conditions when time has come for him to move on. Mapxemkars are lucky to have at Mapusa and can see some lasting changes where only cobwebs has grown. Also, it is to be noted that the vacant marshy land just across Kadamba Terminus and adjacent to the Mapusa yard has been acquired for the extension of this terminus in 2008 when Mr. Pilankar was the PI. He is seen bubbling with plans to put Mapusa Kadamba in better shape in immediate time to come. Hopefully, the Mapusa citizens and Goa's No.1 and No.2 will give due encouragement to Mr. Pilankar so that Bardezkars may be proud, happy and satisfied with the Mapusa Bus terminus which presently is and has been an eyesore. Accompanying Mr. Pilankar was Mr. Sagar Javdekar, editor of Tarun Bharat. The unused expanse seen with gunny sackful of old files awaiting cremation is the part of the existing 2nd floor of the Mapusa RTO Building where, as we are told, the working section of the 2nd floor was initiated by Mr. Pilankar when he was a PI at Mapusa RTO last. And it was a pleasure to tell Mr. Pilankar and Mr. Javdekar about the email I had sent to Goa's No.1 in 2004 [during his last tenure] requesting him to look kindly at Mapusa, being the son of Mapusa, and not to polish his adopted constituency of Panjim only. That his attention was required towards three things. (1) Kadamba Terminus which is an eyesore, (2) Mapusa river which is getting poisoned with raw sewage and (3) Mapusa world famous Market which is a mess. That I had gotten a response to my email saying quote Florian-bab, you will see vast changes in Mapusa before Christmas" Unquote. So I waited for Christmas, Jan, Feb, and sent responded to his email thus Quote Manohar-bab, which Christmas did you mean? [Goanet] onion tears
ONION TEARS The prices of onions are reigning at Rs 90 to Rs 100 a Kg. Not to speak of vegetables and fruits which are out of reach of most, which include bananas India is truly a banana republic. The prices of meat, fish, spices have similarly gone through the roof The base price is quoted at Rs 100= for all commodities The price rise of onions are 500% and cabbage is 700% The people are consuming more or there are expandable incomes. Why would consumer wallop onions and cabbage is not understandable. A certain section of community for whom onions are untouchable. In Qatar Indian quality onions cost half the price Sharad Pawar says he is happy for the farmers, but not concerned about the others, What remunerative price does the farmer get Heavy rains and cyclone's are the cause of shortages But the same factors have not affected the export production Onions are removed from essential commodities act and hence dealing with the hoarders is not a legal options. There is artificial shortages created to benefit the unscrupulous traders, including some progressive farmers at best, There is no will to catch the hoarders as the politicians are conniving with them It is estimated that the Rs 800 crores are generated in a single day There is no doubt that the profits are funneled for election funds, But no body wants to admit the fact The states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andra Pradesh are large producers, yet the arrivals in the market is deliberately delayed. The rise in essential commodities is a cyclic issue, especially related to elections There is no will either to ban exports or import onion's to depress the black marketing. The people resistance to some extent can have effect on volume of sales, but being a common, essential ingredient makes it difficult for taste palate The price rise is created artificially. In the preceding snippet, mention was made of the 'deluxe pie' that many doutors had their fingers in, and that there surely were others who were attracted (like cazules) to it. As the competition grew, so did the number and cost of medicines prescribed. Were they all necessary? Could not say for sure. Did the doentes always comply with the regimen prescribed? Almost certainly not. Did the doentes feel better? Well, some did, and those who did not, chose to consult another doutor. And what did that doutor do? He prescribed another set of even more expensive medicines. "The more expensive the medicinas, the 'more besht' the doutor!". And so ..escalated the profits of the 'farmacias','drogarias' and big Pharma, and so increased the hole in the pocket of the doentes. But were any of the doutors reading about the 'medicinas', their effects, side-effects and drug interactions? They were, were they not? Certainly, they were paying some attention to those who had appointed themselves as the new deliverers of medical updates ie. the 'mhedical rip-presentathives'. So, for those who look at healthcare mainly as an opportunity to make poixe, poixe ani more poixe without ever having studied dotorponn, it was a dream come true.
