"Communication at the Service of an Authentic Culture of Encounter"
-- Pope's Message for World Communications Day

http://www.news.va/en/news/communication-at-the-service-of-an-authentic-cultu

1 June 2014

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Today we are living in a world which is growing ever 'smaller' and
where, as a result, it would seem to be easier for all of us to be
neighbours. Developments in travel and communications technology are
bringing us closer together and making us more connected, even as
globalization makes us increasingly interdependent. Nonetheless,
divisions, which are sometimes quite deep, continue to exist within our
human family. On the global level we see a scandalous gap between the
opulence of the wealthy and the utter destitution of the poor. Often we
need only walk the streets of a city to see the contrast between people
living on the street and the brilliant lights of the store windows. We
have become so accustomed to these things that they no longer unsettle
us. Our world suffers from many forms of exclusion, marginalization and
poverty, to say nothing of conflicts born of a combination of economic,
political, ideological, and, sadly, even religious motives.

In a world like this, media can help us to feel closer to one another,
creating a sense of the unity of the human family which can in turn
inspire solidarity and serious efforts to ensure a more dignified life
for all. Good communication helps us to grow closer, to know one
another better, and ultimately, to grow in unity. The walls which
divide us can be broken down only if we are prepared to listen and learn
from one another. We need to resolve our differences through forms of
dialogue which help us grow in understanding and mutual respect. A
culture of encounter demands that we be ready not only to give, but also
to receive. Media can help us greatly in this, especially nowadays,
when the networks of human communication have made unprecedented
advances. The internet, in particular, offers immense possibilities for
encounter and solidarity. This is something truly good, a gift from God.

This is not to say that certain problems do not exist. The speed with
which information is communicated exceeds our capacity for reflection
and judgement, and this does not make for more balanced and proper forms
of self-expression. The variety of opinions being aired can be seen as
helpful, but it also enables people to barricade themselves behind
sources of information which only confirm their own wishes and ideas, or
political and economic interests. The world of communications can help
us either to expand our knowledge or to lose our bearings. The desire
for digital connectivity can have the effect of isolating us from our
neighbours, from those closest to us. We should not overlook the fact
that those who for whatever reason lack access to social media run the
risk of being left behind.

While these drawbacks are real, they do not justify rejecting social
media; rather, they remind us that communication is ultimately a human
rather than technological achievement. What is it, then, that helps us,
in the digital environment, to grow in humanity and mutual
understanding? We need, for example, to recover a certain sense of
deliberateness and calm. This calls for time and the ability to be
silent and to listen. We need also to be patient if we want to
understand those who are different from us. People only express
themselves fully when they are not merely tolerated, but know that they
are truly accepted. If we are genuinely attentive in listening to
others, we will learn to look at the world with different eyes and come
to appreciate the richness of human experience as manifested in
different cultures and traditions. We will also learn to appreciate
more fully the important values inspired by Christianity, such as the
vision of the human person, the nature of marriage and the family, the
proper distinction between the religious and political spheres, the
principles of solidarity and subsidiarity, and many others.

How, then, can communication be at the service of an authentic culture
of encounter? What does it mean for us, as disciples of the Lord, to
encounter others in the light of the Gospel? In spite of our own
limitations and sinfulness, how do we draw truly close to one another?
These questions are summed up in what a scribe – a communicator – once
asked Jesus: 'And who is my neighbour?' (Lk 10:29). This question can
help us to see communication in terms of 'neighbourliness'. We might
paraphrase the question in this way: How can we be 'neighbourly' in our
use of the communications media and in the new environment created by
digital technology? I find an answer in the parable of the Good
Samaritan, which is also a parable about communication. Those who
communicate, in effect, become neighbours. The Good Samaritan not only
draws nearer t

Nehru's confidence, indeed.
That is why Cardinal Gracias never thought of holding Nehru to his promises
to Goa.  Indeed helped him to bundle Goa into India, lock stock and barrel
without any safeguards. Today Cardinal Gracias would be honoured by Goans if
Special Status for Goa was demanded and attained immediately  after the so
called liberation. Goa is still slogging on this issue after 52  years. So
much for Nehru's confidence that he enjoyed.

NEWS CHANNELS INCLUDING NDTV FUNDED BY CONGRESS: PARRIKAR
Thursday, 23 January 2014 | Staff Reporter | Panji

*Rankled by negative publicity in the media on account of a physical
slugfest between two of his MLAs in Delhi, Goa Chief Minister Manohar
Parrikar went on a tirade against the fourth estate calling them
“beneficiaries of the Congress.”*

Speaking in a rural Goa township of Quepem located around 60 kms south of
Panaji, Parrikar even singled out NDTV for his coverage.“I want to ask
these channels in Delhi, where do you get their benefit from? …I know all
their money comes from the Congress. I will even name one channel. NDTV.
The whole world knows it is a Congress channel. Otherwise these channels
will not work. Financially, none of the channels are viable,” said Parrikar.

Interestingly, Parrikar himself was a recipient of a ‘National English news
channel’ and NDTV’s rival — CNN-IBN’s award for the best politician of the
year in 2012.The comments come barely days after the media, quoting
Opposition leaders, who vouched for the incident, reported that two BJP
MLAs had engaged in an alcohol-fuelled fight in the wee hours of Saturday
morning, while they were in New Delhi to attend their party’s recently
concluded national executive.

The incident in question, took place in Goa Niwas, located in New Delhi’s
plush Chanakayapuri area at 3am. The victim MLA who was allegedly at the
receiving end of the other MLAs power punches, was treated at Max Hospital
in Saket.Sanguem MLA Subhash Phaldesai, who was at the receiving end of the
alleged drunken slugfest at the New Delhi-based Goa Niwas in the wee hours
of January 18, has however claimed that his injuries are on account of a
fall from a flight of stairs at the Chanakyapuri-based State residency.

Now. as it is unlikely that any of us were around at that time, around
these folks, let us try this exercise: (We can say that VLP was about 21 years
of age at the time of her marriage.)

Where was is that Nehru and Menon likely met first?

When would that be?

How old would VLP have been when she was widowed?

What was the tradition (at the time) of remarriage among Kashmiri Pandit widows?

What was/is the tradition (at that time / presently) of marriage between
Kashmiris and Malayalis?

Based on the answers we get from our research, I am sure that 'we' will be able

[Goanet] The Test of Being A Canadian

2014-01-24 Thread roland.francis
If you are a first-generation immigrant, there's no better test of being a
true-blue Canadian than bundling up, venturing about your normal business and
being happy about it, this winter.

I've passed the test, an opportunity that was not presented to me all the
winters since I have come, as they were nothing as severe as this one. From
early December to date, we have been hit by very low temps, gusting winds that
drop the thermometer like nothing else does and snow falls that have often
turned to either slush or ice.

While in summer I become somewhat lethargic and a little housebound, in winter,
I get sprightly and ready to put on my coat and boots to face whatever's
outside, at the smallest chance. Not to forget I was born and raised and worked
for more than half my life in the tropics. Of that latterly in a desert
environment.

I say all this without any exaggeration, to serve as an encouraging example to
any intending Goan immigrant whose only bar to coming here is the weather.

Interestingly, a friend has a theory which is quite possible, that the only
reason Canada has a population of 35 million instead of 350 million (which it
can easily sustain) is the cold.

[Goanet] IS HERALD THE " VOICE OF GOA" ?

2014-01-24 Thread Stephen Dias
Dear Sir/s
Attn : Mr Raul Fernandes.

It appears “ Herald “ which once was considered the Voice of Goa has
long lost its steam and glory and is today batting for causes around
the globe except of course of Goa. Look at Herald of 22nd and 23rd
January, 2014. The headline on the front page on 22nd Jan, is on
 Kejrival dharna in
New Delhi and this is also bagged with an editorial on Delhi episode.
It seems Goans have abandoned reading of Herald! To top it the two
main articles on the editorial page are on the Sacred Mountains of
Korea and the other boring article on Dolphins in Ganges River. Sadly
the incompetent editorial staff has run out of issues connected and
concerning Goa. Our rivers are polluted and our marine biodiversity is
at stake. Our forests are dwindling and tigers fast depleting. Garbage
and Sewage affecting Goa is far more important to Goans than the
ecosystem in the Brahmaputra appearing in the Herald pages. Raul
Fernandes the Owner and Managing Editor must shake up the sleepy
Editor in charge at Herald and order him to take up Goa centric issues
of saving our monitor lizards, which are considered basic to our
“gumot” where our musicians can play and entertain the Goan crowd. The
disappearances of leopards and panthers will boars in Goan forests and
the deteriorating standards of our traditional Feni are issues in
question.

Wake up Herald interact and infuse Goans to write on issues now
threaten the Goan identity if you truly are the Voice of Goa.
In fact I am deeply concern with Herald because this paper was read by my
father and I continue to read it as I have some soft corner for this paper
and I am reading for the last 55 years or so, I decided to convince the Owner
of Herald to tune up the staff working in Editorial page and see that his paper
is improved. The Manager is not been able to manage well I believe.

Your sad reader, who took Herald always, in high esteem,

Stephen Dias, D.Paula

Aires Rodrigues and the Goa Children's Act have done) of the very difficult
task that some of us faced & continue to face in getting such cases through
the system.

Photo Blog by Rajan Parrikar has posted a new item, 'Devil's Golf Course'

Tee off with Beelzebub.

Devil's Golf Course, photographed over two consecutive mornings in December 2012
with the superb Canon TS-E 90mm f/2.8 lens. The tilt movement permits control of
the depth of field in the plane of the salt pan.

Just btw, I did get married in an off-white kurta-pjama. Something
like this http://bit.ly/1jKItEU

Nobody complained. (If they did, I would have treated it as their
problem, not mine.) I found it comfortable, simple and more in keeping
with my approach to life. Would anyone have a problem with that?
(Subsequently, I have gone about in a suit, but my approach is:
avoidable.)

I do believe that the chief minister deserves to be criticised. But
the clothes he wears should be 99th or 127th on the list of issues to
criticise him over.

There are in fact a lot of class and/or cultural biases in deciding
what is apt clothing. We are revealing our bias in deciding what is
'right' and 'wrong'. This is as apt as someone else deciding whether
Sikhs should be allowed to wear turbans, whether Muslim women ought to
feel comfortable in burqas or not, and so on. To my mind, this is all
relative to what we believe and see as "apt". See a cartoon which
makes the point appropriately. So true:
http://sglx3.netsarius.com/~rimasg/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/burqas-or-bikinis-L-FQ9zzd.jpeg

Next we will start legislating what someone else's children should be
studying in schools, what dialect and script should serve as their
medium of instruction, what can be "acceptable" "mother tongues", and
what not! Go forward a bit and we should also be thinking about what
religion people follow ("foreign" or "Indian"). Or what garb is
suitable for a woman at what age in her life!

Let not our intolerance show.

Parrikar went on a tirade against the fourth estate calling them
?beneficiaries of the Congress.?*

Speaking in a rural Goa township of Quepem located around 60 kms south of
Panaji, Parrikar even singled out NDTV for his coverage.?I want to ask
these channels in Delhi, where do you get their benefit from? ?I know all
their money comes from the Congress. I will even name one channel. NDTV.
The whole world knows it is a Congress channel. Otherwise these channels
will not work. Financially, none of the channels are viable,? said Parrikar.

Interestingly, Parrikar himself was a recipient of a ?National English news
channel? and NDTV?s rival ? CNN-IBN?s award for the best politician of the
year in 2012.The comments come barely days after the media, quoting
Opposition leaders, who vouched for the incident, reported that two BJP
MLAs had engaged in an alcohol-fuelled fight in the wee hours of Saturday
morning, while they were in New Delhi to attend their party?s recently
concluded national executive.

The incident in question, took place in Goa Niwas, located in New Delhi?s
plush Chanakayapuri area at 3am.

[Goanet] Why are we tilted towards the west ?

2014-01-24 Thread Ana Maria Fernandes
Many of us praise the western countries even without seeing the place and study
its geography and its people too. We look upon our own mother India as a source
of inferiority and low class. Once upon a time we had a craze to buy foreign
items. Even our church has foreign saints. Most of the priest while preaching
will quote quotes from foreign authors. Many of the priest will make a trip to
the west at least once a year and some of them like to settle over there. Many
of our goans once they go to the gulf and make money some of them settle abroad
.Some of them will even sell their houses. How many of you know Goa and India ?
Goa was a land blessed by God. People had abundant rice and vegetable to eat
and plenty of fish in the market. Come rain and we could go fishing and get
fish free of cost. People were healthy. Some people in the villages did field
work, some were busy with fish industries, some with liquor trades either
preparing liquor and others selling. Those in the cities did business . Some
managed to get jobs. Goa had happy goans and healthy goans. Are we happy today
? some of us went to the gulf and made lot of money . We built mansions .Some
of us have gone to the west or foreign countries. Are you happy over there ? If
your answer is yes then why do you think of Goa ? Why do you work so hard to
meet other goans over the other side of the world ? Why do you have goan clubs
over there ? why can't you join Eureopean clubs drink with the European and
visit the Europeans next door ? My brother once went to Canada for a short
visit. He happened to visit a bar somewhere where the Europeans also visited.
As usual he just said " hallo " to a European sitting at the counter next to
him. He got so angry that he said to him " do I know you " It was an insult. I
am sure many of our goans settled abroad will not agree with this and give so
many excuses to defend the statement " O we are all happy. what you write is
bakvas. Ask your self " am I happy ? am I earning more than what I would earn
in Indian ? do not convert foreign money in Indian rupees and value your status
