Mining Ban lifted but Scamsters still free: GSRP While it is heartening to know that the Supreme Court has lifted the mining ban on Goa, the people of Goa will have to wait for a Goa Su-Raj Party (GSRP) MP in Parliament and its government in the Assembly if they expect any action against the mining companies and politicians responsible for estimated mining scam of Rs 35000 crore as reported in the Justice MB Shah Commission report. Former Chief Minister Digambar Kamat has been indicted in the illegal mining report and other former CMs like Parrikar and Rane. Politicians such as Subash Shirodkar, Filipe Neri Rodrigues and Joaquim Alemao are known to have been involved in some form to facilitate illegal mining in Goa and have profited from the scam. Mining companies such as Fomentos, Chowghules Sesa have all violated the rules stipulated for legal mining in Goa. The BJP government is moving at a snail place in booking the culprits, clearly indicating a nexus between both political parties and mining companies, expressed Savio Rodrigues, Secretary President (Youth Affairs). Mining dependent people would find relief with news of the lifting of the ban. However, it is now incumbent on the people of Goa to force the government to make mining a state-owned corporation rather than letting a few mining families indicted in the Shah Commission report to reap the benefits of the lifting of the mining ban. Goa Su-Raj Party (GSRP) has already declared in its Lok Sabha manifesto that it would ensure that mining, which is a state-owned resource, is structured into a state-owned corporation and we urge to people to support GSRP in this demand, further elaborated Rodrigues. If the government intends to bring to book the mining scamsters, then it should take up GSRP's challenge to recover 10 per cent of the Rs 35000 crore mining scam money in seven-months and the balance in the remaining 29 months. But BJP and Congress will both not train their guns towards the mining companies or politicians, elucidated Rodrigues. Likewise the Portuguese were ruling Goa two and a half centuries before the British came to the Indian subcontinent. Can this history be erased by changing the names of cities? he asked. Today, the Hindu organizations want to rename the cities, Later, they will want to rename the state and who knows in the future they would want Portuguese sounding name-holders to change their names to Hindu names, too, or some RSS-BJP zombie like Giriraj Singh will tell them to go to Portugal just like he wants those opposing Modi to go to Pakistan. Hinduism is a religion of tolerance and acceptance, not an intimidating force. The concept of Hindustan propagated by the Hindu organizations on the lines of an Islamic Nation is itself flawed because the concept of Hindustan never existed till around the time of the fight for Independence. Even our founding leaders of India wanted governance devoid of religious interference, hence terming India as a 'secular' nation, meaning acceptance of no religion, Rodrigues further elaborated. 20-Apr-2014 Dear Friend, Many of us are familiar with the story of Thomas, often referred to as the Doubter, who put the Lord to the test. Unless I touch, I refuse to believe. The story of the resurrection is not over with the celebration of Easter, it is such an overpowering event that its full impact is slowly felt by the disciples who gradually are transformed from doubting and disillusioned people into powerful witnesses of the Risen Lord. Have a transforming weekend! Fr. Jude Sunday Reflections 2nd Sunday of Easter-Unless I touch, I refuse to believe! 27-Apr-2014 Readings: Acts 2: 42-47; 1 Peter 1: 3-9; John 20: 19-31 The first reading describes to us the early Christian community, a powerful witness of the Risen Lord, because of the presence of the Spirit so tangibly felt by all who came into contact with it. Luke presents four characteristics of the early community: It was a 'faith-filled' Church devoted to the teachings from the Apostles; a 'communal' Church, where all shared and cared for the poor; a 'praying' church, devoted to the breaking of bread; and a 'happy' church enjoying favour with all the people. We might discover that the church today is struggling to be the faithful witness to Christ. We cannot be disciples of Jesus on our own, we need the community. To live with others we have to live for others. Together we can make it! If you're a photographer, you love seagulls. They soar so gracefully, almost like they're posing for the camera. They're beautiful - when they're alone. When they're together, they are not so beautiful. One gets on a perch, another comes to knock him off; one gets some food, others attack him for it. Scientists put a red band on the leg of one seagull to find out what happened, and he was pecked to death by the other gulls because he had something they didn't. Now contrast that with those Canadian Geese who do everything together. Studies show that those geese almost always travel together, usually in those familiar V-formations. Now, if one Canada goose is injured and can't go on, another goose will stay with him until he's ready to join another flock...they're never left alone. The scientists even believe that the honking that we hear is actually the geese cheerleading for each other - Honk! You can make it! Honk! The bottom line on those geese is this: they are able to fly up to 71% farther together than they could ever fly alone. -So are we who belong to Jesus Christ. We're able to fly a whole lot farther together than we ever could by ourselves. It's just too bad that so many of us are more seagull than geese - we're up there soaring all by ourselves, doing our thing, but missing the power of flying together with other brothers and sisters. Anonymous The Gospel of this Sunday is one that can fill us with hope as the risen Lord comes to his disciples in spite of the barriers that are present. They have not only closed themselves behind locked doors but their minds are closed to the possibility that Jesus has arisen from the dead. Jesus patiently breaks through and comes into their midst. Peace be with you! This same Jesus breaks through all the barriers that we put up against him, our fears, our doubts, our tendency to quit. He comes not to judge us but to fill us with new hope. Peace be to you! The second part of the gospel story narrates how Thomas refuses to accept the testimony of the other disciples. They too perhaps hesitatingly tested the Lord when he appeared in their midst by offering him a fish and were convinced he was no ghost when he ate it. But Thomas wanted more proof, he wanted to touch and feel for himself. While we are quick to point a finger at Thomas, the Lord himself is more accommodating and is ready to let Thomas touch and be touched by him. At the same time he has a word for all of us who have perhaps not yet seen the Lord but are asked to believe. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe. Can we be Jesus and let ourselves be touched by peoples’ lives? Can we be Jesus as we reach out and touch? All is Forgiven There is a Spanish story about a father and son who had become estranged after years of bitter strife. The son finally ran away. Finding that his son was missing, the father became heartbroken and set off to find him. He searched for months to no avail. Finally in a last desperate effort, the father placed an advertisement in the city newspaper. The ad read: Dear Paco, meet me in front of the bell tower in the plaza at noon on Saturday. All is forgiven. I love you. Your Father. That Saturday eight Pacos, men and boys showed up in the plaza, looking for forgiveness and love from their fathers. But Paskam Khell tradition is fast dying out. Very few places in Goa organised such khell during Easter. We had a chance to witness Paskam khell this year on 20.4.14 at Velsao Razvoir. A khell by Kalliz de Orlim. Zomnivoilo Khell may also be known as Fell, Khell, Hell, Partio etc. Government should do enough to protect and promote this form of folk art. Looking at the new parish appointments in Bombay for any familiar name, I see that Fr. Jude Botelho is appointed as the parish priest of Our Lady of Health Cavel. If this is the same priest who frequently writes on this forum, I send my best wishes for a devout and successful ministry at that parish, to you Fr. Jude. The Cavel church along with the Dabul church of St. Sebastian and the church of Our Lady of Seven Dolours of Dhobitalao popularly known as the Sonapur Church, form a historic trio of churches that served a once-stalwart Goan neighborhood. 80% Goan until the late seventies of the last century, this was the home and kingdom of all things Goan. From the early twentieth century every Goan relocating to Bombay either lived, visited, came to church or just walked through the streets of Cavel, Dabul and Dhobitalao if they felt nostalgia for Goa, or just wanted to hear Konkani in a sea if English, Hindi and what would have been to them other strange languages. Regards Stephen Dias D.Paula BSNL MOBILE CELL TOWER RADIATION IN DONA PAULA IS FOUND ERRATIC As an expert in radiation techniques on Mobile towers, I have found that the radiation power by BSNL is brought down considerably and most of the times there is no coverage at all, for the residents in D.Paula area. For more than a month this situation is found aggravating day by day. Other service providers like Airtel and Idea, the propagation of power continues as usual. The reason behind this bad service from BSNL is probably that the some people in D.Paula have been complaining from headache and other major ailments like cancer etc, where many have already died as they were residing near the towers and the radiations were beyond the prescribed measurements limits. There is enough evidence of these symptoms and the cancer cases, due to many of such towers around this locality. Since the BSNL signals are now completely weak or no coverage, the customers of BSNL gets the messages like ‘ Network Rejected”, No Network available”, “Conditional Forwarding” etc and people have to continuously dial the numbers without materializing the call. Now, those other service providers like Airtel and Idea, are continue providing the service. What is the use of keeping the BSNL tower in OFF position or radiating emissions intermittently with weak signals? The damage of radiation hazards will continue to exist since other service providers are already emitting signals. The funny part is that, once a person is away from the propagation of BSNL radiation area of D.Paula Tower, the coverage from BSNL is found restored, possibly receiving signals from other BSNL towers from Panjim or away from D.Paula. The tower erected near NIO circle, the signals are read in our Mobiles phones as “Raj Bhavan” and when this call is conditionally forwarded it goes to Marmagoa and reads as “MPT” a distance of approx. 15 kms or may be transmitting from elsewhere and most of the time it does not materialize that also. Can BSNL organize their system and propagate the power within the guidelines set down by the Goa State Control Pollution Board (GSCPB) which is as per the ALL India and International approved guidelines set limits. If this continue to be erratic it is advisable that the BSNL service providers dismantle their towers in D.Paula so that people are not put in monetary loss and inconvenience.
