[Goanet] This Sunday April 27, 2014 Mass in Celebration of Bl. Joseph Vaz, a reminder of his non-Canonization
Of colonial prejudices, historical injustice, and Catholic inaction . Today, April 21, we celebrate the 363rd birth anniversary of Bl. Joseph Vaz (b. April 21, 1651). We are approaching our monthly Mass on April 27th which we have in solidarity with Catholics in Sri Lanka, Goa, and the Mangalore region, who are praying for his Canonization. At the same time, we wish to remind all Catholics who celebrate current canonizations that their efforts are needed to get a deserving saint such as Blessed Vaz canonized. We all, along with Church leaders, share in the responsibility for the “non-Canonization” of Bl. Joseph Vaz by our inaction, as we pass the 300th anniversary of the start of his Cause in 1713 by the Bishop of Cochin. Pope Francis waived the second miracle required for the canonization of Pope John XXIII which will take place on April 27th while people in remote and troubled villages in Sri Lanka are told to pray for yet another miracle to get their Founder and Apostle (Blessed Vaz) canonized. We take this opportunity to share some events in the year 2000 when the Joseph Naik Vaz presented a Petition to have Bl. Vaz canonized as a Martyr without the final miracle: - In the year 2000, a Petition was made to Pope John Paul II to have Bl. Vaz canonized as a Martyr without the final miracle as was being done for hundreds of other Martyrs at that time. It was handed personally to the Pope by Cardinal Emeritus of Mumbai, Cardinal Simon Pimenta on behalf of the Joseph Naik Vaz Institute. The former Prefect of the Sacred Congregation of the Saints, Cardinal Saraiva Martins agreed with the petitioners that Blessed Joseph Vaz could be classed as a Martyr like those martyrs in the Roman Martyrology who were not killed but lived and died under persecution. It is easy to see that Blessed Joseph Vaz and his priests went to Sri Lanka under Dutch persecution and worked under persecution until they died, without ever returning to their homeland. Cardinal Saraiva Martins said that if the Pope wished, he could canonize Blessed Joseph Vaz as a Martyr without the final miracle. - But that Petition to H.H. Pope John Paul II in 2000 for the canonization of Bl. Joseph Vaz as a Martyr for the Grand Jubilee was denied. A Committee of Cardinals that included the Indian Cardinal Lourdusamy decided that if an exception were granted to an Indian Cause, then other Indian Causes would request an exception. In fact, Cardinal Lourdusamy sent a message to the petitioners that it would be best to come back when they had the miracle. - Soon after, at the World Oratorian Congress in Rome in 2000, the former Archbishop of Calcutta, Henry D’Souza, gave a talk entitled The Relevance of Bl. Joseph Vaz to the Evangelization of Asia today, ”expressing the view of many Church historians and thinkers and laity that the Cause of Bl. Vaz has suffered from the colonial prejudices of past ages, and that historical justice should be done. He argued with Cardinal Saraiva Martins – and lost – that the Cause had suffered from past prejudice and should be granted an exception, and any other Indian Causes that had been held back similarly should all be granted exceptions. It is a sad day when Canonizations depend on how well connected one is in Rome, and not on one’s outstanding saintly life and achievements even under persecution. We are sponsoring the 4th mass this year (held on the 4th Sunday of every month in 2014) at St. John the Baptist Church, El Cerrito, California on Sunday, April 27 at 12:30 pm for the special intention of his canonization. Church: St. John the Baptist Church, 11152 San Pablo Avenue, El Cerrito, California, 94530. USA. Time: Sunday, April 27, 12:30 pm St. John the Baptist Church is within walking distance of the El Cerrito Del Norte Bart station. For further information, please email josephnaik@gmail.com Thank you. He was the Principal at Loyola High School Junior College, Pune, from 1986 to 1990 and thereafter at Loyola High School, Margao, till 2007, when Fr. [Goanet] Modi Must Be Given A Chance
Roland Francis: why Modi at all? He is steel beneath the khadi and a person of change. You need that to govern 1.2 billion people or you will get a spineless person like Manmohan Singh who is a brilliant economist but a vacillating politician of the ilk of Narasimha Rao but without his corruption. Any more Singhs or worse and India will not be able to rise from the current corruption morass. He is not unproven and most of all the people seem to want him as their PM. They see the alternatives and shudder more at them than they do at NaMo or what he can possibly bring. Response: Below is an article by Fr Cedric Prakash s.j. who is a Human Rights activist and who has lived in Gujarat and witnessed and experienced the pogrom of 2002 and events thereafter first hand unlike those based overseas in the safe confines of good, civilised and democratic governments. Here are some of his views. The Signs are Ominous! -Fr. Cedric Prakash sj* Three seemingly unconnected incidents took place in various parts of India recently. On Friday, 18th April, the BJP party leader in Bihar, Giriraj Singh made a categorical statement that “those who opposed Narendra Modi had no place in India. They would have to go to Pakistan after the elections”. Earlier in Visakhapatnam on April 8th, BJP’s senior leader Venkaiah Naidu said that “the BJP would bring in an anti-conversion law to ban religious conversions all over the country if it is voted to power in 2014 elections”. And on April 21st, (Easter Sunday), the International working President of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP).Dr. Pravin Togadia in a vicious speech in Rajkot (Gujarat) demanded that Muslims vacate houses in the Hindu areas of the city. Targeting a Muslim businessman, Togadia gave him 48 hours to vacate his house “if he does not relent” he told the Hindu mobs “go with stones, tyres and tomatoes to his office” (reported in the Times of India ed. Ahmedabad, pg. 1, April 21st, 2014). Very interestingly last year, on March 21st, 2013, (Easter Sunday) in the Maninagar area of Ahmedabad, Togadia gave a call to a large gathering for the establishment of a ‘Hindu Rashtra’ (nation) stating that by 2015, Gujarat would be the first ‘Hindu State’ of the country. Incidentally, Maninagar is the constituency of Narendra Modi, the BJP prime ministerial candidate (who still hopes to swear by the Constitution of India) but till today has had no courage to take on Togadia and to denounce what he has been saying and doing. Though sections of the media make of an animosity between the two, the fact that they have the same mindset and are born to the same ideology, leaves no one in doubt. The three incidents in very different parts of the country have much in common. They primarily reveal the core Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) ideology which has spawned the BJP. It is no secret that the BJP prime ministerial candidate Modi was decided upon by the top brass of the RSS. That the ultimate desire of the RSS is the establishment of a ‘Hindu nation State’ is without a shadow of doubt. Naidu’s comments in Visakhapatnam must be seen in the same context. In 2002, Modi raised the ‘bogey of conversion’ during his election campaign in Gujarat and in 2003, he brought in the Gujarat Freedom of Religion Act which must be easily ranked as one of the most draconian laws in the history of any democracy anywhere in the world. The law very blatantly says that “if one wants to change his / her religion, one must first seek the permission of the civil authority (the Collector)”. [Goanet] Goanet Reader: Butcher, baker, minstrel, hunter, frontiersman... Goan Transformation in East Africa (Selma Carvalho)
BUTCHER, BAKER, MINSTREL, HUNTER, FRONTIERSMAN Goan Transformations in East Africa Selma Carvalho lescarval...@yahoo.com Some historical narratives are so neglected that they are like abandoned orphans, left on the footsteps of an old church. So committed are we, Goans, to examining our relationship with the Portuguese that our engagement with the British is one such neglected narrative in our recollection which now borders on historical amnesia. We forget that by the end of the nineteenth century, Portugal had all but been emasculated; the world was dominated by Britain and Goans residing outside of the Estado da India, pretty much belonged to Queen Victoria rather than King Carlos. The period between 1860 and 1920, is marked by movement, possibly the first large-scale movement of people across the globe by newer and faster modes of transport; cars, trains and steam-ships. It's a period of intense activity and new discoveries, not just technological new discoveries but new frontiers. The transformations which take place during this time, present to us an entirely different image of the Goan from the one that typifies him as compliant and compromising. Arriving on the shores of East Africa, first in Zanzibar where a thriving colony of 300 odd Goans have settled by the 1890s, and then in Mombasa and Nairobi in more robust numbers, we see a Goan who is in every respect the archetypcial frontiersman. Briefly unshackled from the constraints of colonialism, the mask of docility drops for just long enough for him to emerge as an intrepid entrepreneur, minstrel, hunter, the poor man's Asclepius and philanthropist. From 1865 onwards, along Portuguese Street in Zanzibar which by then is the most crucial port in the Indian Ocean trade route, is a sprouting of Goan butcheries, bakeries and ship chandlers providing fresh meat, vegetables and flour to the ships docked nearby. This then, is the first glimpse we have of the Goan in East Africa, having emigrated either directly from the Indian subcontinent or from a neighbouring and clearly ailing Mozambique. Not for the first time, the Goans' lack of inhibition in handling meat, particularly beef and pork, sets him apart from other Asians, along with his rather peculiar ability to play the jovial host in the 'grog-shops' he runs. These bar-cum-provision stores become the focal point of British colonial life, where in the absence of clubs or other forms of entertainment, they gather in the darkened rooms, after sun down for a drink of whiskey and soda. The tiny, tin-shanty shops become large, airy retail stores, providing 'every description of goods used by Europeans.' And so, the Goan and the Briton are drawn together in an intimate dance of dependency, which deepens as the British push forward into the interior. Apart from his relationship with the Briton, the Goan also has a very central place in indigenous Zanzibar society. Quite rapidly he moves from a peripheral position into one of immense responsibility, and indeed authority, within the Sultan's palace. A succession of Goan doctors are appointed as palace physicians. Equally important are the Goan band-masters which lead the Sultan's military band and play every Wednesday afternoon at the Victorian Gardens and on Saturdays at the Mnazi Moja Club. These cultured, sophisticated men -- men with a facility in any number of European and Asian languages -- become cultural brokers, used as interpreters when European diplomats drop by, and described at least by one British diplomat, H.H. Johnston, as wily. The prosperity of a few established Goan businessmen makes them staunch supporters of the Catholic Church in Zanzibar, funding the new Catholic Cemetery, and supporting the building of the St. Joseph's Cathedral between 1896-1898. Zanzibar's turn of the century role in creating a modern society has been shabbily neglected. It was perhaps the last outpost of colonial Britain where inter-racial consultation and collaboration was thought to be the most beneficial and honourable form of governance, and it paved the way for new paradigms in race relations, based on modern concepts of equality. The emergence of Mombasa as a port would overshadow Zanzibar, and its eventual decline was predictable after Nairobi emerged as British East Africa's administrative headquarters. Nairobi, presented a counter to Zanzibar in re-directing Imperial power to an all-European hegemony. But before Nairobi emerged as a power-house in East Africa, it was a fumbling frontier town, the most convenient piece of flat ground available on which the British pitched a tent in 1899, to build a depot for the Uganda Railway paving a route from the interior to the port. The railway laid out a thoroughfare from the west side of the station and named it Victoria Street. Here grew a shambolic little town with corrugated dwellings, a spread of tents housing
[Goanet] New book stresses importance of libraries, books to Goa
== April 23 is WORLD BOOK DAY == PANJIM: On World Book Day (April 23), a new book just published here notes that Goa's public library is among the oldest across India. It was set up way back in 1832, even before Calcutta and other cities had public libraries. It is also well known that Goa had the first Gutenberg-type printing press in the whole of Asia. Private libraries, municipal libraries, and other initiatives have taken the book to the reader in Goa, suggests this book, which is authored by Maria Pia de Menezes Rodrigues, former Curator of the State Central Library Goa. It reminds us that the library can play the role of being a people's university, and that libraries have been in India, in various shapes and forms, since the Indus Valley Civilisation, and during the British Raj. Post-Independence, special efforts were made to promote the spread of libraries. In Goa itself, besides initiatives in the colonial state capital, there were municipal libraries running out of Mapusa, Salcete, Ponda, Panjim, and elsewhere. A string of private libraries were started around the early 20th century, some of which like the Saraswati Mandir Library in Panjim, and the Gomant Vidya Niketan Library, Margao, continue to function even today. But much remains to be done to spread the libraries effectively to serve all areas of Goa, specially rural Goa. Goa's Publica Livraria, as the institution was first known, has changed and morphed much during its 18 decades of existence. It now has plush new premises at Pato, at the entrance to the Goan State capital. This 160-page book documents the changes over time of the institution now known as the Krishnadas Shama State Central Library. This book also includes 14 pages of photographs of various other libraries today -- including Mahalaxmi (Mala), Sharada Mandir's, Livraria Confidant (Margao), NIO, Saraswati Mandir, Kala Academy, DMC Library (Assagao), the Archbishop's Archives, and Bookworm (Taleigao). The photos, with an essay appreciated the importance of the book, are by Gabriella D'Cruz, a young student. The 160-page book is priced at Rs 200 and available at Confidant (Margao) and other outlets. See https://www.flickr.com/photos/fn-goa/13966445715/sizes/c/

Dear Marshall, Why waste your breath on the like of spineless guys who also are lacking in grey matter in their heads and who want to test MODI ? Tell them that they are resurrecting HITLER in India who will not shoot himself in the head but be shot if he at all becomes the PM. India is not the Nazi land. It never was, And it never will be. Whether there are arseholes like Rahul Gandhi or not and other arseholes who promote this arsehole. This law clearly violates Article 25 of the Constitution of India and Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Giriraj’s threats are not empty ones. In his ten-year plus rule in Gujarat, Modi has been vindictive and vengeful. This can be exemplified by several instances. In a hard-telling article in Live Mint (19th April, 2014), entitled ‘Narendra Modi critics Expect No Quarter, No Mercy” states “What should we expect from Modi Sarkar? I predict no quarter and no mercy. He will continue his tyrannical (I use the word in a classical sense) ways as he has in Gujarat”. [Goanet] WILL THIS DECISION OF NO ENTRY IN CASINOS FOR GOANS WILL WORK WELL?
Refer: News report in Herald dt 23.4.2014 entilted ' NO ENTRY FOR GOANS IN CASINOS AFTER POLL Let me say that Parrikar is a wise men and highly intelligent person. He is now planning to bring a sort of decision that there will not be an entry for Goans in Casinos after the Poll. ( Herald news dt 23.4.2014) I say that Goans do not need CASINOS in River Mandovi at all. That is the final clarion call from us. Already our Youth has gone astray and finished their parents money and even sold their properties, taken loans etc. for sake of gambling in these casinos. What will happen once the entry of Goans youth stopped into casinos as per the Parrikar statement? What will he achieve? When these addicted youth Goans see that these Non-Goans entering in casinos for gambling surely they will revolt and decide further course of action which may go into the business of thefts, crimes and prostitution etc. Already crimes are taking places in Goa , breaking up window glasses from cars parked and selling the car stereos etc. This is a ridiculous decision taken by Parrikar for banning entry for Goans instead of he should have asked casinos to vacate. What i feel is that Parrikar is just deviating this issue in order to keep this casinos permanently in Mandovi River. Will it be for his ulterior motives to get funds for the BJP Government but at what cost? Environmental damage, navigational river congestion, prostitution and gambling etc. It will be prudent that Parrikar puts a stop to this casinos stay in this river and once for all ask them to vacate Mandovi waters. Re: [Goanet] Modi Must Be Given A Chance
Dear Floriano, It's not logical to compare Modi to Hitler as you have done. You may know Modi and think you know what he is likely to do, but you don't know Hitler it seems and what he has done. By such comparisons you trivialize the evil that was Hitler. In a worse case scenario in Goa assuming Parrikar or some other stooge of Modi were to exert long term hostile pressure on Goan Catholics, the community should arise from its long slumber and oppose those hostile forces. You are not an insignificant part of the state population. You know as well as I do that even if half of the Hindus join with the Goan CM Modi stooge, they cannot achieve anything anti Christian. At this moment in time, you like many Christians are just indulging in scare tactics. Roland. Sent from Samsung Mobile

Speaking on the issue, Savio Rodrigues, Secretary President (Youth Affairs), GSRP expressed, Goa is the only state to hold two consecutive Hindu Nation Convention. This has been allowed because the government is ruled by the right-wing political party BJP. The Hindu Nation theory aimed at regaining India's past glory and shedding of the 'colonial hangover' is misplaced and the way of going about it through fundamentalism is totally obnoxious and intolerable. History cannot be wiped out by merely changing the names. This is outright fanaticism. It is one thing trying to regain the past glory of the Indian subcontinent as existed before 1947. But anything more than that is pure garbage. Goa, for all that matters, has never been a part of India but a part of the Indian subcontinent. The British were ruling a major part of the Indian subcontinent, now called India [after 1947]. Likewise the Portuguese were ruling Goa two and a half centuries before the British came to the Indian subcontinent. Can this history be erased by changing the names of cities? he asked. Today, the Hindu organizations want to rename the cities, Later, they will want to rename the state and who knows in the future they would want Portuguese sounding name-holders to change their names to Hindu names, too, or some RSS-BJP zombie like Giriraj Singh will tell them to go to Portugal just like he wants those opposing Modi to go to Pakistan. Hinduism is a religion of tolerance and acceptance, not an intimidating force. The concept of Hindustan propagated by the Hindu organizations on the lines of an Islamic Nation is itself flawed because the concept of Hindustan never existed till around the time of the fight for Independence. Even our founding leaders of India wanted governance devoid of religious interference, hence terming India as a 'secular' nation, meaning acceptance of no religion, Rodrigues further elaborated. The General Secretary of the Party, Floriano Lobo, upset about these fanatical trends showing up in Goa said This is a dangerous trend which has germinated in India, now showing its tentacles in Goa, perhaps, since the attack by the RSS-BJP sponsored mob led by Naguesh Karmali on the Mala-Fontainhas road and house plaques sporting Portuguese names, on 18 June, 2004, first time since 1961, and having gotten off scot free, thanks to the then ruling BJP government. Such fanaticism must be condemned and such organizations must be banned in the country, especially in Goa . BJP government in Goa, he said must stem this 'Hindu Rashtra Disease' before it erupts into an issue in this state bordering Hindu fanaticism and added it is a million dollar question if the Goa BJP has the will to do so Sd/- Savio Rodrigues Secretary President (Youth Affairs) Goa Su-Raj Party Mob:+919764447313 Website: www.goasu-raj.org --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast!
