How wearing contact lenses all day can DESTROY your eyesight: Read one woman's
cautionary tale

Aimee McWilliams was in serious danger of losing her sight as her eyes were
starved of oxygen

After
finally getting round to having a routine check-up for her contact
lenses, Aimee McWilliams assumed it would be merely a formality.Having
worn contacts since the age of 14, the 33-year-old fashion designer
from London had never experienced any problems with them. The
general advice is to avoid wearing contacts for more than eight hours a
day. However Aimee, like many people, had been wearing them for much
longer - in her case, for more than 14 hours every day.

This had
slowly been starving her eyes of oxygen; while the damage wasn't
apparent to the naked eye, it was spotted when the optometrist used a
special microscope. Aimee was shocked to learn that she was in serious
danger of losing her sight.'I was horrified,' recalls Aimee, from
London. 'I'd always worn my lenses from 7 am until nearly midnight.
Nobody had told me that I was jeopardising my sight by wearing them for
so long, though I suppose I just said I used them daily.
'What
frightened me even more was that there had been no signs anything was
wrong - my eyes looked the same. And I'd delayed my annual check-up by
several weeks because I was so busy and I didn't think I really needed
one.'Around 3.7 million people in Britain wear contact lenses. But
many don't appreciate how meticulous you need to be about using them,
says Hosam Kasaby, a consultant ophthalmic surgeon at Southend
University Hospital and BMI Southend Hospital. One of the risks is
corneal neovascularisation, the condition Aimee had. As Mr Kasaby
explains: 'The cornea - the clear outer layer at the front of the
eyeball - is the only part of the body that gets its oxygen supply
directly from the air rather than from the blood.'But a contact lens acts as a
barrier to that oxygen supply, so extensive wear can potentially starve the
cornea of oxygen.

'The
body compensates for this by growing new blood vessels over the cornea
to provide an oxygen supply, or corneal neovascularisation.
'Left
unchecked, the eye can become covered with blood vessels, and turn the
cornea opaque. In rare cases it can threaten sight.'The problem is
the condition can build up over several years - it's only when it gets
to an advanced stage that contacts wearers become aware of a problem, as
that's when it will cause red, irritated eyes, by which time it may be
too late.

The general advice is to avoid wearing contacts for more than eight hours a day

Stopping wearing the lenses can cause the new blood
vessels to collapse, though in severe cases, when there is excessive
blood vessel growth, even if they collapse, they can cause scarring.Corneal
neovascularisation may be more common with standard soft lenses, which
are made of water-containing plastic. The other main type of lens, gas
permeable, while less flexible, allows in more oxygen, says Robert
Glass, a Manchester-based optometrist.'There are also newer types of
soft lenses, known as silicone hydrogels, which allow more oxygen to
pass through to the cornea than previous soft lens materials, making
them healthier,' he says.
There are lenses licensed for use during
sleep, which are permeable enough to ensure there is minimal risk of
corneal neovascularisation. But you should be assessed by an optometrist
 before using these.
'I'd
always worn my lenses from 7 am until nearly midnight. Nobody had told
me that I was jeopardising my sight by wearing them for so long'
It's not only corneal neovascularisation that's the problem with wearing
contacts for too long.
Lucia
Paovesana, 27, says her big, round blue eyes, which she once considered
her best feature, have been ruined through wearing contact lenses for
more than ten hours a day, as the whites of her eyes are now often red
and sore. She's worn contacts since she was 14, then four years ago
she began suffering eye infections every few months. 'If I was awake I'd
wear lenses,' says Lucia, who lives in Tamworth and works in a bar.
'But every few months my eyes would become red and painful. I'd leave
the lenses for a couple of days and they'd settle down. But the cycle
would repeat itself.'Eventually, she saw her optician, who
immediately referred her to a specialist at Ashfurlong Medical Centre in
Sutton Coldfield, where she was diagnosed with blepharitis -
inflammation of the eyelids - aggravated by wearing her contacts for too
long every day. Blepharitis causes reddening of the whites of the eye
as the inflamed lids scratch the surface. People wearing contacts are at
much higher risk of blephar-itis, as the eye is more likely to be dry
and prone to irritation.
Blepharitis cannot usually be cured, but
the symptoms can be con

[Goanet] From cyberspace to the street -- who is more irresponsible? (Nisser Dias)

2014-05-27 Thread Goanet Reader
>From cyberspace to the street -- who is more irresponsible?

Nisser Dias
nisserd...@gmail.com

A section of the general public, activists and some political
parties have come together to protest against the high-handedness
of the police seeking police custody of marine engineer
Devu Chodankar for his Facebook post. It is alleged that the
Facebook post was to the effect that Christians in South Goa
would lose their identity if Modi became prime minister of
India. The comment was posted in March and the police are
seeking his arrest two months later upon a complaint from Atul
Pai Kane. Such a long delay in acting adds to the suspicion
over the intentions of the police.

We can endlessly debate over freedom of speech
being curtailed by the BJP government and whether the post
could possibly result in a flare-up of communal disharmony
among communities. But, till date, the Facebook comments
have remained in cyberspace and has not yet spilled onto the
streets.

Chodankar realised his folly withdrew the comment
and apologized. End of the matter. But with Atul
Pai Kane pursuing his tirade against the marine
engineer, it seems that this has brought
Chodankar's post into the local media and onto the
streets. The threat perception is greater now then
before; from cyberspace it has been brought onto
the public domain. I really do not know who is a
  bigger culprit in the issue.

But the timing -- rather, the lapse of time -- in the police
reacting to it does pass on a message that this government be
it at the Centre or the State will not tolerate criticism of
its functioning.  Devu Chodankar is not an isolated case;
infact it can be said that till recently he was not known
widely but today he is.

In India a much larger section of the population knows
Sagarika Ghosh -- an editor of CNN-IBN television and more
popular as the wife of Rajdeep Sardessai, Editor-in-Chief of
CNN-IBN and a son of Goa. Sagarika has also been issued a
memo by the management of TV-18 for tweeting against Modi.
This too after Modi won the elections for BJP with a
thumping majority. Hence every comment, statement, Facebook
post and tweet seems to be going under the microscope and the
individuals are being targeted. Is this the beginning of a
second Emergency in India?

It is rather strange that the main actors seem to
be brushing it aside as inconsequential but
secretly use others to do their dirty work.
Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco has hit the nail on
the head by stating that the police are acting as
agents of the BJP. It is an open secret that any
government in power uses the police to get back at
the Opposition or their critics. But what needs to
be condemned here is that the police are being used
to harass an individual who it is alleged was once
  their party member.

The police reply to the anticipatory bail application is also
equally obnoxious, as the men in uniform has said that they
want Chodankar's police custody to find out any motive of a
larger game-plan to promote communal and social disharmony in
the state. These are strong words and it can be implied that
the complainant, the police and their political bosses are
making a mountain out of a molehill.

Surprisingly none of these individuals who are determined to
make an example of Devu Chodankar lifted a finger when rabid
fundamentalist Muthalik publicly said that his organisation
would distribute swords to every Hindu household to protect
themselves or attack Muslims. The police had let such a
strong statement pass without even registering a suo moto
case and that too when the Ram Sene has a proven record of
being violent and inciting communal hatred. And one cannot
even compare Chodankar to a Muthalik or the Ram Sene. But
the police and BJP thinks that Chodankar's Facebook post
could lead to communal disharmony.

Chodankar's post may have been harsh and individuals should
not allow themselves to be carried away with passion. But
his withdrawal of the post and apology should have been
sufficient to put the matter to rest. And here comes the
question whether the government by using the police wants to
send a message to all that henceforth it will be zero
tolerance to criticism.

By targeting an individual from the majority community as the
first instance, nobody can point fingers at the government
for targeting the minority community in future. So it looks
like the BJP government is laying the groundwork for
shielding itself from allegations of being communal.

Ultimately, what will the complainant and the police achieve
now? The elections are over, the hype is complete, BJP has
won the election with huge majority so much so that they did
not even require allies to form the government. Narendra
Modi has been sworn in as the Prime Minister of this country.

Excerpts:

Selma Carvalho's A Railway Runs Through (2014) is a praiseworthy collection
of oral traditions and memories of Goans who have moved out from British
East Africa to England, Canada and elsewhere …

If it is generally true that those who do not write usually criticize, I
have seen this happening to some extent in the Goanet forum, where quite a
few cheap comments have sought to belittle the research efforts of Selma
Carvalho. None of such loose-tongue critics have anything worth to show …

The Indians in Mozambique had to suffer socially offensive nicknames, such
as monhés (Hindus and Muslims) and canecos (Goan Catholics). They were
invented by the Portuguese white settlers who hated their competition. I did
not come across any such parallel in Selma's book, while she does not shy
away from pointing to the caste rivalries that marked the Goan diaspora, and
illustrates it with the cases of Goan Institute and Goan Gymkhana in
Nairobi…

we can all be grateful to Selma Carvalho who has laid the base for future
construction…

into temporary graveyards…….and the remains i.e. bones will have to be
shifted into small concrete boxes near the walls of the graveyards……….and
some catholics may decide to cremate/burn the remains and dispose off the
ashes or bone fragments in the Arabian sea, jungles of borivali national
park, powai lake, etc.

Beginning from the 18 th century the Protestant Britishers owned East India
company allowed people from Gujarat, Maharashtra, etc to settle on the
lands of catholics in bombay ( including salsette island )………..Ignorant &
drunken catholic villagers of bombay adopted the designation EastIndians
after some bandra residents spread rumours among the catholic villagers
that by identifying with the name EastIndians would enable them to get
priority in jobs in the East India company.even after the EastIndia
company fled in 1947…….the catholic villagers foolishly continued with the
designation EastIndians………instead of adopting a new name BombayVillagers
and changing the name of BEIA to BVP ( Bombay Villagers Panchayat ) since
all the catholic villagers lived in the villages (gaothans) of bombay ……..
except for the goan/mangalorean catholics nobody in the world knows who
eastindians in bombay are……….. The marathi migrants from konkan, western
maharashtra, pune, khandesh, kolhapur, satara, amravati, northen
maharashtra, marathwada, solapur, nagpur, etc who dominated the bmc,
police, collectorsoffices, citysurveyoffices, tradeunions, mmrda, mhada,
talatis offices, tehsildars offices, politics, administrations, etc in
bombay region pushed the catholic villagers of bombay towards poverty……
also now most of the catholic villages (gaothans) being included in the
slum category and gaothans being included in the capital value 500 sq ft
property tax system further tragedy awaits the catholic villagers of
bombay...… the population of the catholic villagers of bombay ( www
BOMBAYLAND.BLOGSPOT com ) which should have been around 5 lakhs is now
around 2 lakhs.

Christians/Catholics in India don't indulge in terrrorrist activities,
antti-national activities, smuggling/underworld activities……dont indulge in
cheating & corruption activities……dont indulge in arson looting rioting
activities……..dont indulge in communal & fundamentalist activities……dont
indulge in criminal activities……..don't indulge in encroaching openspaces
mangroves collectors lands to create slums…...don't indulge in female
foeticide/infanticide…….dont indulge in overpopulation activities……but
in-spite of being very peaceful & law abiding citizens why do
christians/catholics in India face religious persecution & discrimination ?.

No Unlimited resources (land water oil gas diesel petrol kerosene cng png
lpg electricity gold silver diamond coal steel iron copper aluminium wood
fruits foodgrains cement iron bricks sand houses skilled/unskilled jobs
etc)…….but the population in India keeps on increasing and correspondingly
all these problems also keeps on increasing……. i.e. poverty, lack of
housing, lack of peace, lack of education, lack of jobs or other
employment, lack of hygiene, lack of sanitation medicines and health care,
lack of transport, food shortage, water shortage, land shortage, growth of
slums, anger, fights, beating, shouting, quarrels, crying, breaking of
things, arson, rioting, communal disharmony, forced begging, forced labor,
committing variety of crimes, various nefarious activities like smuggling,
settling personal feuds or in creating trouble during elections, mob
mentality and damage and burning of public and private
property.CORRUPTION is a universal phenomenon; but then, in India, it
is a curse for its people who are already cursed with poverty, illiteracy,
casteism, communal disharmony and ill-healthToday India would have been
a wealthy, prosperous & secular country if successive governments at the
centre/states had strictly enforced the two child policy all over
India…..and had increased legal marriageable age from 18/21 years to 25
years……..and had passed draconian laws against corruption blackmoney
communalforces female foeticide/infanticide, etc…..and…..ha
