[Goanet] Pilar priest Peter Raposo (44) passes away at Ohio

2015-03-14 Thread Goanet Obits
PANJIM, Goa [March 15, 2015]: Fr Peter Raposo,
former editor of the Pilar Society Konkani weekly
Vauraddeancho Ixtt, currently teaching at the Ohio
University, suddenly passed away on 13 March
  following a massive heart attack.

He was 44.

The Pilar Society announced that his end came at 6.30 am IST
Saturday after he complained of uneasiness. Though he
momentarily improved following medical attention, he
eventually collapsed and breathed his last on the way to
hospital.

The Caranzalem-born dramatist-musician priest, who played an
active role in the production of film-maker Pooja Bhatt's
movie Holiday had completed his Masters in Organizational
Communication and Training and Development at DePaul
University at Chicago and, in 2012, was awarded a scholarship
by the Ohio University.

From June 2006-2010, Raposo served as the Secretary to
Telespore Cardinal Toppo of the Archdiocese of Ranchi in
North India, where his handling of the post as Secretary drew
appreciation from the Cardinal.

As an associate professor of Communication at the
University, he was popular amongst students and was currently
pursuing the third year of doctoral studies, where he was
readying his final doctoral thesis on Servant leadership as
opposed to leadership propagated by the world. The priest
pointed out that Christ's style leadership was selfless and
that style can help even political leaders today.

Earlier, in his post doctoral thesis at the University on the
importance of communication in the Church, he produced a
paper 'Priest as Teacher: Understanding Source Credibility.'
It was published in the Journal of Communication and Religion.

If we are not credible , no one will accept our
teachings. Our credibility comes from being
witnesses and bearers of the Gospel values. When a
priest communicates this dimension of self, the
  encounter occurs, Raposo had argued.

The priest said that his stint in Ohio University has been
the most challenging and interesting phase of his 17 years of
priestly vocation for which he was unprepared.

[Goanet celebrates Peter Raposo's life by sharing some of his
writing... done around a decade ago, when he was editor of *Ixtt*]

Since 1889, almost a hundred Romi Konkani papers or
periodicals
have been published. Why did not a single one survive?

[MEDIA]

Romi dailies -- a lost cause?
By Peter Raposo, sfx

So far, almost a hundred Romi Konkani papers or
periodicals have been published at different point
of time since the year 1889. Undentechem Sallok by
Eduardo Bruno de Souza was the first Romi Konkani
periodical that started in 1889. Initially this
paper started as a monthly but later came out as a
fortnightly and lasted till 1894. Most of these
periodicals were weekly, fortnightly or monthly
with an exception of few dailies.

In all there, there were a total of around nine dailies that
thrived -- at different points of time -- in Romi Konkani
journalism. Started in 1907 in Mumbai, by Bernard Francisco
Cabral, Sanjechem Noketr is the first daily in Romi Konkani.

Later, in 1932, Antonio Vicente da Cruz started Concani
Bulletin, another daily paper in Mumbai. These two dailies
were followed by Goan Observer (a Konkani-English daily)
started in 1933 by Joao Lazarus de Souza and Emigrant by
Inacio Caitano, which was started in 1934 as a weekly but
later was published as a daily.

These dailies were all flagged off on a high note, but there
apparently wasn't enough steam to keep going. Besides, these
being mostly a one-man show business, after a short span of
time they all closed. This was the first phase of the daily
papers. Most of these papers did not follow any rules of
grammar or syntax. Portuguese words crept in extensively.

The second phase of the daily papers began in 1963
soon after Goa's Liberation. Felicio Cardozo
started Sot in Margao. This was followed by
Divtti, which started in 1967 of which Felicio
Cardozo, again, was the first editor.
(Incidentally, Sot and A Vida, a Portuguese daily,
joined forces and combined to form Divtti).

In 1970, Gomantak Private Limited started Uzvadd in Panjim.
This was edited by Evagrio Jorge. In 1982, Novem Goem was
started and Gurunath Kelekar became its first editor.
Goencho Avaz is the last Romi Konkani daily on our list,
which was started by Fr. Freddy D'Costa in 1989.

This second phase saw changes come in by way of language
used, grammar and syntax. Many writers emerged during this
period.

SONGS... A THOUSAND PAGES IN ALL [SATURDAY SPECIAL]

Goanet

Were you born in the 1950s and grew up as a teenager in the
1960s glued to your radio listening to Jim Reeves or Pat
Boone or Cliff Richard or Connie Francis or Ricky Nelson,
Elvis Presley the Beatles or the Seekers?

Were you a fan of the popular musicals of the 1950s, 1960s
and 1970s such as My Fair Lady or The Sound of Music or Hello
Dolly or Fiddler on the Roof?

Do you still recall with nostalgia the music of World War II,
crooners such as Bing Crosby, Perry Como and Frank Sinatra?
Or are you a fan of real old-time music -- of the immortal
songs that were famous long before you were born?  Songs such
as Love’s Old Sweet Song, Moonlight Bay, Missouri Waltz,
Silver Threads among the Gold to name a few.

Then 'A Thousand Pages of Songs' might be  just the
book you would like to have for yourself.  It is a
work of scholarship and research.  It is quite
literally an encyclopedia of songs of all eras
ranging from medieval folk songs...  through the
era of parlour songs of the late 19th and early
20th century ...  to the rock and roll music of the
          1950s and 1960s.

Browsing through the pages of this book you will come to know
not just the words of each song, but also its history, the
year of composition, the names of the songwriter(s), the
artists who made the song famous, and many other details.

Dr. Michael Lobo will make a presentation on his book *A
Thousand Pages of Songs* (with historical notes) on Saturday,
March 14, 2015 at 5 pm.

This will be followed by a programme of popular songs from
the Opera presented by Soprano Faye Monteiro with accompanist
Ingrid Ann Nazareth.

The event will be held at Fundacao Oriente, Behind People's
High School, Fontainhas, Panjim, Goa. It is open to the
public.

[Goanet] Ghor bhav - a discussion on the term and concept

2015-03-14 Thread Cecil Pinto
GHOR BHAV

Very often it happens here in Goa that when all siblings have settled
abroad, or are working abroad, one brother (or sister) either takes on or
is given the responsibility of looking after the aging parents and the
family house and property. Is there a term for such a brother who stays
back? Maybe on the lines of 'ghor zanvuim' (house son-in-law). Can he be
called ghor bhav or ghor bhoinn. Have I just coined a term that will
soon come into popular usage? Do you know of any ghor bhavs?

--
This post above from me on Facebook elicited interesting comments and
responses. Below is a selection. Does anyone here on GoaNet have any
opinions on the term/matter?
--

Irineu:
There have been cases but the term you coined has not been known. Should we
credit you with the term?

Cecil:
You don't have to credit me when you use it while speaking but if you use
it while writing you have to put- (c) Cecil Pinto. This is only till
October 2015 after which I will generously declare it Public Domain and
everyone can use it without acknowledging my coining of the term. Example
of usage, My ghor bhav [(c) - Cecil Pinto] Edwin said Mummy insisted on
being taken by taxi for all the ladainhas and so to please send some more
money.

Joy:
Very true, something to ponder on. It is a sacrifice

Cecil: Joy, I don't know about sacrifice. In some cases the siblings abroad
contributed handsomely towards the upkeep of parents and house and the ghor
bhav [(c) - Cecil Pinto] would have an additional source of income which
allowed him to live a better lifestyle.

Margarida:
gosh Cecil so many of these around Goathey sacrificed and stayed
behindbut when it comes to division of propertythey all come back
ouncing on the GHOR BHAU anim BHOIN

Cecil:
Margarida although I like the sound of 'ghor rakhno' it sounds somewhat
like a cowherd's job. I COIN A NEOLOGISM AND SUDDENLY EVERYBODY IS A
LEXICOGRAPHER AND WANTS TO COIN SIMILAR TERMS AND TAKE CREDIT! Bah!

Anthony:
padiser bhau vo bhoin as unsucessfull to settle else where !

Cecil:
Anthony, not always was the ghor bhav [(c) - Cecil Pinto] 'padisher'. Very
often he had no desire to go abroad - for example someone like me. He
often, by his presence in Goa, provided an opportunity to his siblings to
enjoy a better lifestyle abroad without having to worry about matters back
home.

Joy:
Cecil Pinto, understand personification! Ghor mazor is a term commonly used
in konkani referring to people tied down to the house responsibility

Cecil:
Joy, please understand I am a cunning linguist. The term 'ghor mazor'
refers to someone who likes to stay at home. It has no connection with
'responsibility'. Till today the term 'ghor mazor' has only been used
online once and so it qualifies as a Googlewhack because if you put it
without quotes in Google it produces only one result.
http://issuu.com/goa-streets/docs/web_f8d57a34d71b21/20 . Now look at the
usage there. It was in a QA to an agony aunt column which was written at
the time by Jose Lourenco and has a sexual connotation.

Gabe:
The one who stays behind should inherit lock stock and barrel imho.

Michelle:
My brother is ghor bhav (c) cecil pinto) but he does not look after anyone.
My mum looks after him.

Arsenio:
Ghor iramo

Cecil:
Arsenio, irmao is an elder brother. A ghor bhav [(c) - Cecil Pinto] is not
always the eldest brother.

Cecil:
Side topic: The word 'irmao' is a loan word from the Portuguese language
and means brother. In Konkani it conventionally means elder brother or is
used as a term of respect for a unrelated elder male. Some people argue
that it means 'brother' and not 'elder brother'. I am not sure of this. The
fact that you will never call a younger male 'irmao' says something, no?

Savika:
Cecil Pintothis is unfair to those who collectively share
responsibility towards their parentsand an encouragement to those that
are waiting to shed responsibility to a prime person in the family

Cecil:
What is unfair Savika? The practice? Why? It works for so many people. What
is your exact objection?

Savika:
Cecil Pinto, Yes the words that you want to coin 'ghor bhav' (sounds
horrible ).In my circles so far everyone takes ownership of elderly
parents

Cecil:
Savika you must be inhabiting very rarefied circles. You mean to say nobody
in your 'circles' lives or works abroad and has elderly parents here in
Goa? None of them has siblings here who take care of the parents? Now
taking 'ownership' and actually taking physical care of parents are two
different things. Nobody denies 'ownership' of their parents. But due to
circumstances if they are abroad they keep in touc with their parents and
send enough remittances to them, and the caretaker sibling/s, to live a
comfortable life. What is wrong with this? Everyone's happy.

Savika:
Cecil Pintomy 'circles' are definitely more mature than yoursI know
people who take their parents with them abroad too and are treating them
well..u

[Goanet] MARGAO JMFC SUMMONS MAPUSA JUDGE TO FACE TRIA

2015-03-14 Thread Aires Rodrigues
The Margao Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Reina Fernandes has
summoned Judge Dvijple Patkar to appear before her on April 7th at 2.30 pm
to face trial for offences under Sections 498-A (b), 323, read with Section
34 of Indian Penal Code and Section 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act.

Judge Dvijple Patkar who is currently Civil Judge Senior Division and
Judicial Magistrate First Class at Mapusa is the first Judge in Goa’s
history to be summoned as an accused.

The Margao Police on 5th March charge sheeted Judge Dvijple Patkar and two
others after an investigation consequent to a First Information Report No
502/2014 dated 3rd November 2014 that was registered against Judge Dvijple
Patkar.

Judge Dvijple Patkar is also facing proceedings under the Domestic Violence
Act registered as DVA/28/2014 before the Court of the Judicial Magistrate
First Class at Vasco. Those proceedings are currently before the South Goa
District Judge PV.Sawaikar with the next hearing scheduled on March 20th.

It would now have to be seen if the High Court allows the very tainted
Dvijple Patkar to continue discharging her duties as a Judge. It would have
been very appropriate for Judge Patkar to herself step down and face the
wheels of Justice.

This is the darkest ever and very sordid shameful chapter for Goa’s
Judiciary. A charge sheeted person presiding over the Temple of Justice. It
couldn’t get any worse.
