Later true to his word when Alex came back with my car he brought acid and

Thank you Alex. If anyone wants to get their car cleaned then go to Alex.

My mother had slipped many times on the steps during the rainy season

Hold me, hold me

Make me tell you, I'm in love with you

Thrill me, thrill me
Walk me down the lane where shadows will be, will be
Hiding lovers just the same as we'll be, we'll be

Don't be fooled thinking this is the last you'll find

Kiss me, kiss me

Olga Tellis: Karmayogi of journalism

Olga will probably stop talking to me when this column appears. That may
end our 45-year-old friendship rather abruptly! But I am happy taking the
risk - because Olga's many unsung achievements are worth documenting. On
Wednesday afternoon, Olga Tellis nearly didn't show up for her own
Felicitation, organised by Gurbir Singh, and her fourth estate admirers
at Mumbai's historic Press Club, right across from the offices of the Old
Lady of Boribunder. Singh had unwittingly done the unthinkable when he
posted about Olga having turned 75 on the 4th of August this year. By his
rough calculation, that made it 50 years of Olga as an active journalist.
By any standards, it is a colossal milestone, and definitely one worth
celebrating. But, unsurprisingly, Olga herself was aghast when she was
alerted about the post by friends and promptly declined the honour. Said
she to Gurbir, it is unthinkable. I don't accept felicitations. I
love my work. To be felicitated for that is demeaning the beauty of
work...please, make it a meet for senior journalists - not a felicitation -
or else, I won't turn up!

Nobody messes with Ms Tellis! Not even Gurbir Singh, Chairman of the Press
Club - the invitation was hastily reworded. As Gurbir Singh put it
disarmingly, Let's call this a farce of a panel discussion - we are all
here for Olga Tellis.

And there she was! Red nails, red lipstick, red Maharashtrian lugde worn
with a gold coloured Khaan choli. A far cry from the Olga Tellis who used
to stride into the ultraconservative Mantralaya 40 years ago for regular
press briefings wearing 4-inch killer stilettos, miniskirts, sensuous
jersey blouses...and loads of attitude! This, at a time when she was
possibly the only woman on the political/business beat. And that's the time
I first met her - was she jaw-droppingly gorgeous! She worked crazy hours
then and she works crazy hours now, rarely leaving her desk before 10 pm.

Nothing but nothing matters to Olga as much as her beloved work. Her life
is about the next story. The next deadline. The next exclusive. The rest
can go to hell. Me included! It is an admirable trait for someone in her
unique position. She craves nothing. And shuns personal glory. She has
consistently refused awards and recognitions, saying her work is reward
enough. So single-minded is she that if you ask her about movies, music,
entertainment - you will draw a blank. Her Spartan existence is reflected
in the way she lives - a simple roof over her head in the middle of a
vegetable market. Strictly no frills - not even a geyser! She seems to
subsist on thin air, while concentrating all her energies on gathering
political and financial information/knowledge.

Olga and I have many unusual connections - spotting rainbows is one of
them. Wherever I am in the world, the minute I spot a beautiful rainbow
arching across the sky, I send Olga a message. She does the same. We love
sunsets and skies. Plants and flowers. Her tiny balcony is a mini forest
with wild shrubs and vivid hibiscus. A weaver bird visits once a year and
methodically builds a nest. The huge rubber tree has long outgrown its
planter. These are Olga's real friends! These are the people she goes
home to, and wakes up with. Because her heart was given 53 years ago to a
very demanding partner - journalism.

When I had asked Zia Modi to write a book for my imprint, identifying 10
judgements that changed India, she had picked as one of those ten, a
Supreme Court verdict delivered on a case filed by Olga Tellis, upholding
the rights of slum dwellers. This was way back in 1980. It was a
significant judgement that provided legitimacy, dignity and shelter to
thousands by recognising their fundamental right to life. When I mentioned
this to Olga, she was happy - not for herself, but for the slum dwellers
she had fought so strenuously for. In an era where any and every
semi-literate pen-pusher actively lobbies for national awards (at least a
Padma Shri... they bleat), here is one individual who has spent the better
part of her life doing what she believes in - sans compromise!

The best compliment I can pay my friend Olga is that she remains the
quintessential reporter's reporter - generously sharing her contacts and
information with younger colleagues, taking copious notes at boring press
conferences, paying attention to routine RBI briefings on fiscal policy,
keeping a hawk's eye on corporate jigri pokri, asking tough questions to
hard boiled politicians, and hammering out copy late into the night, her
long, carefully varnished nails tapping the keys somewhat noisily...and her
attention remaining unwaveringly on the edit she has to file, an impossible
deadline she has to meet.

Olga Tellis represents true Azaadi!

Happy Independence Day, readers!

[Goanet] Sexual harassment case at Goa Cable News Channel takes a 'Tehelka' turn

2015-08-15 Thread Mayabhushan
Sexual harassment case at Goa Cable News Channel takes a 'Tehelka' turn

Today's development in the sexual harassment case involving a top anchor of
a popular local cable news channel, somewhat puts the episode alongside the
Tarun Tejpal incident of a couple of years ago.

Like Tejpal allegedly confessed to his colleague (in the former Tehelka
editor's case, it was in writing*) and apologised for his alleged
misdemeaour, the top anchor, also a senior print media journalist, on
Saturday, tendered an apology to the management vis a vis sending sexually
explicit messages to the victim, a woman employee at the news channel.

The apology was tendered to the members of the management and a senior
editorial staffer and not to the victim, who has had to quit her job, after
complaining about the sexual harassment by the top anchor earlier this week.

And in what appears to be a sham of a procedure conducted by the channel's
management, the top anchor was let off with a 'final warning' against such
committing such sexual advances in the future.

Several aspects emerge from today's development.

1) The apology tendered by the anchor, virtually confirms the guilt and
validates the complaint of the victim.

2) In Tejpal's case, the former editor in chief's allegedly 'confessional
note' -- in writing -- to the victim and his management colleague, is
believed to have paved way for his arrest. Back then the Goa Police acted
with rare alacrity and suo moto conducted a preliminary enquiry based on
media reports. A First Information Report subsequently followed. His was a
case of alleged sexual assault, rape.

In this express case, the only evidence which is currently in possession of
the channel's management for now, are the sexually explicit messages sent
by the top anchor to the victim. And the apology has been tendered to the
management and not to the victim.

3) It is also clear that the channel's management did not abide by the
Vishakha guidelines, prescribed by the Supreme Court, while dealing with
sexual harassment cases at work place. The management according to the
Vishakha guidelines, has no power to condone or accept apologies because it
has no authority to arbitrate such cases. So by asking the top anchor to
apologise and issuing a final warning in a case of sexual harassment, they
have violated the directions of the Supreme Court in letter and spirit and
can also be held accountable.

4) Like in earlier sexual harassment cases at the news channel, which also
has a print wing, in this case too, the victim has quit the job given the
circumstances. Sources close to her insist that she wants the job back, but
there has been no move by the management to facilitate that.

5) From the manner in which the management chose to 'settle' the sexual
harassment episode, it appears that it is 'case closed' from their end,
citing, what they claim is lack of a formal complaint by the victim.

The news channel's management has refused to acknowledge the explicit
messages as a complaint by itself.

So guys, what do you think this ought to be the end of the story here?

Re: [Goanet] An update on the sexual harassment case ( response to Venantius )

2015-08-15 Thread Jose
Thank you, VJP.

Having ( professionally / on Goanet ) seen 3 scenarios:

1: perpetrators appropriately charged and successfully tried for abuse
2: individuals falsely implicated and accusation voluntarily withdrawn after
much anguish
3: accusation made and no further action after much drama

I suggest (yet again) that 'we' follow the law and help apply it Fairly and
Reasonably.

As a rule, esp after learning about the Goa College of Art fiasco and my foray
into the legal field, I personally prefer to KEEP an OPEN MIND and to Look at
ALL the verifiable Facts of the Case before coming to a conclusion.

Without making reference to the Index case ( that we are talking talking about)
OR any other specific case, I'd submit that some cases leave Trails like
Instant Messages and Texts or Affairsand hence self-slide into oblivion
after heat of the initial drama dissipates.

Sexual Molestation, Abuse and Harassment are REAL and UBIQUITOUS. They are a
real menace to society. However, one False Accusation or an Injudiciously
handled accusation causes immense harm to the fight against harassment and
other forms of abuse.

EVEN IF the Penis is NOT alleged to have been involved.

BTW: I did not see any Investigation updates on Goa Net about that TEST by
 any alleged Investigative Reporter.

An update on the sexual harassment case in a popular cable news
 channel

No formal enquiry as mandated under the Vishakha Committee, has begun at
the news channel, whose top news anchor has been accused of sexual
harassment by a woman staffer three days ago.

For now, aggressive overtures are being made to the victim, by the anchor
to not formally complain to an external agency, even as the victim could
not report to work today. Sources in the news channel, which also
 operates
a newspaper, said that the accused has been 'given' one more day to
'compromise' the case with the victim and to ensure that she does not
 pursue the case legally.

Sources close to the victim have alleged that the anchor, also a senior
print media journalist has threatened to commit suicide, if she comes
 forward with a formal complaint.

In the past too, the anchor, who has been accused of sexual harassment on
more than one occasion in the past, has used the ‘suicide’ route to
 weaken
the resolve of his victims. And it has worked to his advantage.

Meanwhile, the victim’s contact details have been forwarded to the Goa
State Women’s Commission by the undersigned so that she could be
 contacted
 independently by the Commission.

[Goanet] SEPARATE CHAMBERS FOR MLA' s IS UNNECESSARY.

2015-08-15 Thread Stephen Dias
*quote room*

When I was in power, I also tried to get chambers for MLAs. It can be done
in the underground level of the complex. Meanwhile I also request that
there should be a hostel for MLAs near the house Pratapsingh Rane, Leader
of the Opposition
-
Dear Arlekar,
Hon. Speaker of Govt of Goa
Goa Assembly,

In my opinion MLA's should not be provided with separate chamber in the
Assembly because of the following reasons:

i) Unnecessary cost for the Govt exchequer.
ii) MLA's are elected to do public work but if they were given chambers
there are chances for them for napping or bad attendance as they are been
seen during the assembly live proceedings and also may rise corruption.
Transparency is a MUST.
iii) If at all the government is going ahead with the construction of
chambers it is advisable that each chamber should be fitted with monitoring
 cameras.
iv) Hostel may be considered.

Hope this will be implemented and accepted.
