[Goanet] A new life into a purana text (The Times of India)

2015-08-31 Thread Goanet Reader
The scene was Arambol, one of the frontiers of Goa, 500 years
ago. A family mourns the passing away of its eldest member.
That night a man was summoned. Known by the locals as
'Purankar', he had to sing the verses of a holy text called
the 'Krista Purana' for the entire night.

Such was the scene half a millennium ago, when Goa's natives
embraced Christianity. The influence of Latin culture had not
yet reached Goan shores, and the new converts sang their
hymns to the beats of the dholak, ghumot and other folk
instruments.

The 'Krista Purana' translates as the 'The
Christian Puranas', an epic poem on the life of
Jesus Christ written in a mix of Marathi and
Konkani by Fr Thomas Stephens, SJ (1549-1619).
Adopting the literary form of the Hindu Puranas, it
retells the entire story of mankind, from the
creation days to the time of Jesus in lyrical verse
form. The Christian Puranas comprise 11,000 stanzas
  of four verses.

Three years ago, Fr Glen D'Silva, who served on the executive
board of Kala Academy, met its member secretary, Shrikanth
Bhatt, who told him, "Father, someone must revive the Krista
Purana."

Those words stuck in his mind, and he began to look for the
book, learning later that a handwritten copy lies in the
Pilar seminary museum, while a new edition of the book was in
the possession of the Don Bosco educational complex in
Panaji.

D'Silva certainly had illustrious predecessors to follow. Fr
(Dr) Nelson Falcao had translated the works into English,
while Padmashri Suresh Amonkar, educationist, social worker
and writer had worked on the Konkani translation.

Eleven thousand verses dwelling in 49 chapters divided into
the old and new testaments, D'Silva worked steadfastly in his
mission to revive the almost-defunct 500-year-old 'Krista
Purana'.

"My main aim in reviving the 'Krista Purana' was to
bring about a cultural integration. It is important
for us Goans to know our rich musical heritage in
order to appreciate our own culture and
traditions," says D'Silva, who, at present, serves
the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Vaddem-Curdi as
  its parish priest.

Two years ago, in March 2013, D'Silva sang the first 11
verses in a public performance at the XVI Bhakti Sangeet
Samaroh held at the Kala Academy.

D'Silva is also former director of the Pilar Music School and
he was instrumental in starting music schools in Porvorim,
Moira and Margao. His labour of love in revitalizing the
devotional songs materialized in the release of his album 'O
Namo', comprising 11 songs which is symbolic of the 11,000
verses in the 'Krista Purana'.

The album comprises the songs, 'O Namo' (Oh! Hail to thee),
'Tu Parmananda' (You are the absolute bliss, pervading the
universe), 'Tu Sakshat Parmeshvaru' (You are the very God,
Eternal and Infinite), 'Tu ani Tuzaa Ekach Sutu' (You and
your only Son), 'Namo Visvachiye Dipti' (I bow to you, the
light of the universe), 'Namo Spirita' (Hail to you, Oh! Pure
and Holy Spirit), 'Tu Sapta Divya Dannacha Dataru' (You are
the giver of seven divine gifts), 'Jaisa Baap Taisa Putr'
(The Father as well as the Son), 'Teenazanache Ekach Tatva'
(The three are made of one substance); 'Putr to Baapa Pasuni
Vartala' (The Son, of course, came from the Father); 'To
Amchaa Svami' (He is Jesus Christ our Lord).

Of the 11 songs, 'O Namo', 'Namo Spirita', and 'To Amchaa
Swami' are his favourites. "'O Namo' is a rare composition in
Raag Bhupali, 'Namo Spirita' is Raag Hem Kalian. These are
unheard of by today's generation and 'To Amchaa Swami' is in
Raag Shaym Kalyan, which is my favourite raag," he says.

"The 11 songs comprise the first chapter of the
Krista Purana with 25 verses. It is difficult to
measure the hours and time which I have put in. It
was an inspiration and God's grace that worked. I
have not done any great research as such, but,
whatever I learned in Indian music, I applied it in
  the compositions," adds D'Silva.

The music in 'O Namo' features the harmonium, tabla,
electronic tanpura and the violin, which D'Silva has played
himself. "The audio CD is available at music stores. It has
been produced by Brian D'Silva, who is my brother," he says.

"Fr Thomas Stephens began writing the 'Krista
Purana' while he served as parish priest of
Benaulim almost 500 years ago. Having roots in
Salcete myself, I felt that God provided me a task
to preserve, propagate and promote the 'Krista
Purana' through 'O Namo'," says D'Silva, who is a
  native of Carmona.

"When I completed the first chapter comprising 11 songs, I
realized that my efforts were supported by divine grace as
the 'Krista Purana' itself comprises 11,000 verses," says
D'Silva, who doesn't forget to appreciate the support given
by his congreg

[Goanet] Bharat Mukti Morcha decry Indian Shipping Minister Gadkari's Marina comments

2015-08-31 Thread Sebastian
For pictures visit

http://bharatmukti.blogspot.in/2015/08/bharat-mukti-morcha-decry-indian.html

Bharat
Mukti Morcha strongly objects to the recent statements of Union Minister of
Shipping Nitin Gadkari about installing Marinas in Zuari river. Mr.Gadkari’s
statements has been completely irresponsible considering that there has been
wide opposition to marina projects in Zuari river ever since they were
conceived through two Lease deeds of 12 October 2010 with Kargwal Constructions
pvt Ltd and 14 October 2010 with Yatch Heaven Pvt Ltd. There have been
consorted efforts made by Union Government to deprive local communities of
fishing spaces in Zuari river. In both the Lease deeds there is special
provision that favors zero obstruction of mining barge transport by Marinas.
It states “The LESSEE shall
take all precautions to ensure that barge movements are not affected during the
construction as well as operation period of the Marina”. What is
noteworthy is that such a provision does not exist in Lease deed documents. The
statements made by Mr.Gadkari does not have basis and he has made no estimates
as to what it might mean if fishing spaces in Zuari River is lost. What is most
insulting is that in face of overwhelming opposition from public of Chicalim,
Nauxim,
Cacra, Odxel and Goa Velha, Ministers like Alina Saldanha legislators like
Vishnu S. N. Wagh, Panchayats of Sancoale, Cortalim, Agacaim, Siridao,
Bambolim, Zilla Parishad of South Goa, Fishermen’s organisations like  Goenchea
Raponkarancho Ekvott (GRE) and Bharat
Mutki Morcha; Mr.Gadkari went on insisting on Marinas in Zuari River.

Bharat Mukti Morcha
calls for revocation of notification issued by Central Government on 24th
May 2000 extending jurisdiction of MPT over Zuari river. There are already
number of problems in Vasco where MPT has jurisdiction and protests from fisher
people opposing use of Vasco Bay for MPT projects and expansion plans. In this
background Mr.Gadkari has announced that number of MPT berths is to be
increased from 14 to 18. This means further displacement of local people. MPT
has already caused social danger by announcing their plans of developing Goa
into Rest and Recreation (R-n-R) destination. This involves accepting of
foreign ships of soldiers fighting in different countries like Americans in
Philipines in the past. This will only institutionalize Prostitution in Goa.

Bharat Mukti Morcha
foresee that announced 50% subsidy for floating jetties will facilitate
projects opposed by public specially at Divar of Champions group that is
already carrying Gadkari’s photograph on their website, and Ozone group’s
floating Jetty at Old Goa to ferry tourists to Vanxim island in Mandovi. Vanxim
Island has faced strong public protests for past half a decade. Bharat Mukti
Morcha extends support to all
the people, groups, etc who are opposing irrational development policies sought
to be developed by Goa Government as well as by Government of India.

grey Simple Prayer Book was  a musical  blast from the past, even Rainbows End
an excellent modern Goan Dance   band from Swindon  had to rewind and play
English music of the sixties which I am sure  will have been foreign to the
young and upcoming musicians from Goa  despite this  they played well.
After the Traditional Speeches, speeches and more speeches there was a Group
Photography Session of various years in the sixties. Had to give this a miss as
I could not remember which class year was appropriate for me having spent most
of my school days before my Parents and others lost their employment overnight
through Africanisation  I used to hang about older friends who played in Dance
bands like Typhoons, Amigos. Scorpions, All Stars Mabati Footprints and the
Bongo boys band. At least I managed to strum the rythum box guitar at the time
when one was either a Cliff Richard or Elvis Presley Fan.I can recall the first
electric guitar and infra-red mike bringing a new dimension to the dance floor.
The fashion was drainpipes and Platform shoes.
It was fortunate for some of us that our  parents introduced  Goa when we were
younger travelling on ships  Harayana ,Kampala and Karanja as they plied to and
fro  from the ports of  Kilindini in Mombasa  to Marmagoa  most of our former
students  in the hall appeared to be in a world of their own, like the lost
children of GOA. so many older faces and so little time to have a proper chat
as they will have over the last fifty years for whatever reason   been
Emigrating  Holidaying and Cruising everywhere else but to the Land of our
ancestors. Goa must have been really advanced in the 1960s. I can recall Band
members in Nairobi  listening to the radio and on Vinyl , playing songs by ear
even improvising on musical instruments, Only recently on 18 July.2015  having
viewed “Nachom la kumpasar” I observed  the band travelling  Goa/Bombay was
practicing and  playing to sheet music.
History records that the parents of our school teachers will have come from
educated stock imported from Goa on Portuguese and Indian Travel documents to
oil  the British colonial administrative machinery in Kenya.,Us youngsters were
made to read and write the Queens English with Full Stops, commas,
exclamination marks etc even take Cambridge overseas exams all in one sitting
aimed at  better employment opportunities. Our language Konkani amongst my
generation was lost as it was seldom spoken at home yet our Neighbours Alsation
Dog could only understand Hindi I have also come across  in France the dogs
understand French, In Germany German However I am not sure if they have
regional accents.
Lawrences Band in the Film Nachom la Kumpasar ( Lets Dance to the Rhythm)
brought back memories of my Aunt Euphamia singing with Los Amigos in Nairobi
,the band manager at first glance was   a lookalike  Clubhouse Vince at
Ravensbuurne. Being a Roadie  once humping band equipment and Instruments and
cabling sound systems   in Nairobi I could empathise with this  Film with
English Subtitles  this was was indeed a musical  blast from the past as the
music we all know and hum to is brought to life and meaningful with subtitles

Due to unprecedented demand there is another opportunity on the weekend 19/20
September to view Dance to the Rythum There are no advertisements and the 156
mins  Film with English Subtitles will  start on time. The cast include Vijay
Maurya, Palomi Ghosh, Prince Jacob, John D Silva, Meenacshi Martins.
A tribute to the unsung musicians of Goa, who perfected the Portuguese
influenced jazz sound that became the soundtrack to Hindi cinema in the 60s and
70s, the film revolves around a married bandleader and his tempestuous
relationship with his lead singer. Ravishing to look at, the film is a
crowd-pleasing musical with glorious recreation of more than 20 Konkani jazz
standards. The film also boldly states that many classic Hindi songs of the
period that are hummed even today are in reality based on the unaccredited
compositions of these musicians.
Salutations to Bardroy   Baretto with the hand of a brave conductor snatched
back our music from the melting pot of Indian Cinema and to his team for
sharing our music and language on the big screen with full Sound effects. This
is an ideal opportunity for our younger people and the Lost children of Goa to
get to know and enjoy this musical tribute to Goan musicians and our music.

More power to the African bishops! As an Indian/Asian I can identify with so
much of what they are saying. Hope their voices are heard at the Synod and some
Asian bishops join in.

African theologians, bishops cry out for more expansive
synod discussions

Joshua J. McElwee | Aug. 11, 2015

NAIROBI, KENYA

A number of prominent theologians and bishops from across the
African continent have sharply called for more expansive discussions at this
fall's global meeting of Catholic bishops on family issues, saying last year's
event focused too heavily on subjects mainly of concern to Europeans and North
Americans.

Last year's discussions -- which attracted global media coverage scrutinizing
bishops' stances on controversial questions like divorce and remarriage and
same-sex relationships -- left out a multitude of pressing issues facing
millions living throughout Africa, the prelates and academics argued at a
groundbreaking conference here July 16-18.

In a reflection of the tone of the event, one theologian-participant made a
poignant, echoing plea. The global church, she said, must entirely refocus
itself to speak for voiceless Africans who are suffering in many ways.

"How outraged are we? Who is keeping a tab?" Nontando Hadebe cried out to other
participants at the gathering, speaking specifically of the kidnapping of some
300 schoolgirls by the Boko Haram terrorist group in Nigeria in 2014.

"There just needs to be an institution that says no -- no more!" she
continued, calling on the church to reorient to become the "guardian,
sustainer, protector" of African and black lives.

"We need an institution that is outraged and that sustains that outrage as
a prophetic teaching," said the South African, a rising theologian who has
focused her work on the struggles of African women.

Hadebe, who teaches at Johannesburg's St. Augustine College, was one of 36 of
the continent's most prominent Catholic ethicists gathered for the discussions,
the last in a three-year series of such meetings being held at the Jesuit-run
Hekima University College since 2013.

Organized as a "Theological Colloquium on Church, Religion, and Society in
Africa," this year's event saw the academics and selected prelates discuss
a wide range of issues, such as questions of ecological destruction and
religious fundamentalism, and how Pope Francis is impacting the shape of
Africa's church structures.

But many of the conversations focused most on the October meeting of the Synod
of Bishops, the second of two back-to-back bishops' meetings called by Francis
for 2014 and 2015 to focus on family life issues.

Among those addressing that subject were three prelates: Rustenburg, South
Africa, Bishop Kevin Dowling; Malindi, Kenya, Bishop Emanuel Barbara; and
Kibungo, Rwanda, Bishop Antoine Kambanda.

Both Dowling and Barbara bluntly faulted the 2014 meeting for not focusing
enough on African issues.

Dowling, a prominent global voice as a co-president of the international
Catholic peace group Pax Christi, said he hoped the 2015 event would avoid
simply restating doctrines in "predominantly Eurocentric constructs."

More time at the meeting, he said, should be spent on "all the systemic
issues which threaten relationships between people in societies and make it so
hard for parents today to nourish their relationship with their own children
and so bring them up in wholesome and life-giving ways."

Barbara, who has been selected as a substitute to attend the synod should the
Kenyan bishops elected to do so not be able, said the first synod was focused
"much more on a Europe or a European culture which got converted to
Christianity and is now facing big challenges because of the new era."

Africans, Barbara said, face many different challenges than Europeans.
Many Africans, he said, are still dealing with issues related to being newer
converts to Christianity and in trying to live their faith while respecting
their traditional cultures.

The Kenyan bishop called for a new theology of marriage from an African
context.

"If we want to have respect to our African Christian families, we need to
work seriously on an African Christian theology of marriage," he said.
"It's not enough to apply other models that have been there for
centuries."

One theologian, Ugandan Emmanuel Katongole, even criticized what he called a
"tyranny of pressing moral questions" that immediately reduces
problems the church needs to face down to issues of sexuality or authority.

"The overall effect of starting with the 'pressing moral questions' is to
make a parody of the African voice," said Katongole, a professor of
theology and peace studies at the University of Notre Dame's Kroc Institute.
"It is to obscure what might be more broad, urgent but p

*NEPAL MANAGE TO HOLD INDIA*

*By Nilanjan Datta,AIFF Media Team*

*PUNE: *The new kit looked gorgeous, the shade of Orange on the Indian Blue.

Prior to the match, the GPS systems were inserted into the jackets as Team
India took the field wearing GPS trackers for the first time ever in Indian
Football history.

The starting XI had Pronoy Halder making his debut for India, in the
process becoming the 496th Player to play for his Country.

And as India took the field, much to everyone’s surprise, a tactical shift
by National Coach Stephen Constantine say a ‘till now’ Central Midfielder
being moved back to a Central Defender! Dhanpal Ganesh, partnering Sandesh
Jhingan looked composed and impressed with his distribution as the match
progressed.

India dominated and played delightful. But the result ended in a stalemate.
Despite all the dominance all throughout, Stephen Constantine’s India
eventually had to settle for a draw in the International Friendly against
Nepal at the Balewadi Stadium in Pune on Monday (August 31). Constantine
employed as many as 5 substitutions but the deadlock wasn’t broken.

In the first half, India played mostly in the rival half. The Indians
dominated and pushed the rivals into their half. The back four almost
played around the Centre-line and quick interchanges, switching,
transitions and one-twos keeping Nepal guessing.

There’s a certain reason why Eugenson Lyngdoh is so highly rated. Backing
his exemplary work rate, his overhead through in the 44th minute evaded the
Nepal defence and stooped for the onrushing Sunil Chhetri to take it all
the way in to the box. But even as Chhetri, with his feint sent the rival
custodian Limbu Kiran the other way, his placement just went wide. Just!

That apart, Francis Fernandes hit the post in the 20th minute when he tried
to blast in a rebound following Lyngdoh’s corner.

Francis also had a shy at the goal when Limbu came up with back to back
saves to first, frustrate Robin Singh and then Jeje Lalkephlua. And even as
Francis tried to place in the rebound, it deflected for a corner.

Changing over, Constantine made three substitutions. Rowlin Borges was
handed his debut (the 497th Player to play for India) as he replaced
Lyngdoh while Jackichand Singh came in for Francis. Furthermore, Karanjit
Singh came in for Subrata Paul – Chhetri

Captaining the side in the 2nd half.

As was in the first half, corners were earned regularly and almost every
time, Nepal managed to keep it off. In the 62nd minute, Robin couldn’t make
the most of a free header off Jacki’s corner.

CK Vineeth came in as the fourth substitution in the 66t minute and had his
first shy at the goal three minutes later. And a minute before that, the
lanky Limbu timed his jump to perfection to deny Sandesh heading in a Jacki
corner.

The fifth substitution came in the 73rd minute – Cavin Lobo coming in for
debutant Halder who all throughout was omnipresent, available for support
and willing to ‘fight.’

Lobo made his way past two in the 79th minute and even as a full stretched
Linbu managed to keep his left footer away, rival Captain Bharat Thapa
cleared it in time as Robin tried to poach.

And the next minute, Chhetri, after shrugging off his marker shot from just
outside the box but it agonizingly went wide.

The sizeable crowd, loud, with his drums and bugles, did cheer till the
end, but the deadlock wasn’t broken.

*INDIA:* Subrata Paul (GK and Captain) (Karanjit Singh – 46th); Pritam
Kotal, Dhanpal Ganesh, Sandesh Jhingan, Narayan Das; Francis Fernandes
(Jackichand Singh – 46th), Pronoy Halder (debut for India – 496th Player to
represent India – Cavin Lobo – 73rd), Eugenson Lyngdoh (Rowlin Borges – 497
th Player to represent India – 46th), Sunil Chhetri, Jeje Lalekhlua (CK
Vineeth – 66th), Robin Singh.
