*‘CONTINUE SUPPORTING US AND BE CALM’*

*IRAN WILL BE A REAL TEST FOR US, FEELS NICOLAI*

By Nilanjan Datta,
AIFF Media Team

*TABRIZ CITY (IRAN):* A day after the formidable 5-0 victory against
Bahrain and a day prior to the clash against a formidable Iran, Nicolai
Adam, Head Coach, India U-17 World Cup Team feels “it’s important for the
boys to know where they stand and how good they are.”

In a freewheeling interview to www.the-aiff.com, Nicolai spoke at length
about the “tough” clash against Iran, the “encouraging” start, the vision
to be the top Team, his views on Iran, search for “better Players” and much
more. *EXCERPTS:*

*Are you happy the manner your boys responded?*

Yeah, the manner in which they performed was encouraging indeed. But I have
told the boys to stay focused. 5-0 was a good result but we have played
against stronger Teams in Germany during our exposure Tour. But Iran will
be really strong.

*What next after that “encouraging” start?*

Iran will be a real test for us and we are all looking forward to it. It’s
important for the boys to know where they stand and how good they are. They
need to get a realistic view of themselves and their ability to perform as
they stay on track to turn into professional Players.

*Can you elaborate?*

Realistically you need to assess your own capacity in terms of performance.
The goal must be to become better. And in order to see how good you are,
you need to play against top Teams. Our goal is to become the top Team as
we will be playing in the U-17 World Cup. It’s a good way to see where we
are right now.

*What is special about Iran?*

Firstly, they are the hosts and that in itself is a huge advantage.

Secondly, they have a long tradition of Football and are one of the best
Teams in Asia.

Thirdly, they have a lot of experience in terms of preparation as their
Head Coach mentioned. They have been training for the last 10 months in
different environments and that will reap the benefits for sure.

Fourthly, they have a good Coach. He has played in Germany prior and is
also very much experienced about European Football which is extremely
beneficial.

Fifthly, they are much stronger, tall and very physical. It will a very
tough match for us.

*There’s huge excitement back home over the results your Team has been
achieving. How do you react to that?*

I urge all to continue supporting us so that we can prepare professionally
and become better. It’s the generation which will be representing India at
the Global platform and they deserve all the basic amenities and support.
My message to all Indians is to stay calm as we still have a long way to
go. We still have two years left.

*You will be looking for new Players – right?*

I reiterate the scouting process is not finished as yet. The Team hasn’t
been fully built as yet. We are looking for better Players and the process
will continue.

I urge the State Associations to do their homework better when we come for
the second round of scouting. They need to pre-select the best from the
age-group for us to pick as per our needs. Otherwise it’s just a waste of
time, money and energy. And to pre-select Players, they need to go into the
remote areas like I did, and look for them. If you want to find a diamond,
you need to dig into the dirt. We need rowers and not drummers.

[Goanet] Chhattisgargh: Church workers accused of sex abuse in central India

Church workers accused of sex abuse in central India
Catholic leaders in Chhattisgarh say allegation is another form of harassment

ucanews.com reporter, BhopalIndiaSeptember 15, 2015

Police in central India have arrested a Catholic priest, nun and lay
worker accused of sexually abusing a young girl, an allegation Church
officials say is just another instance of harassment they face in a
state run by a pro-Hindu party.

Father Joseph Dhanaswami, principal of Jyoti Mission High School of
Ambikapur diocese in Chhattisgarh state, along with hostel warden
Samaritan Sister Christ Maria and a maid were arrested Sept. 11
following a complaint by the mother of a fourth grade student.

Kirtan Rathore, additional superintendent of police, told ucanews.com
that the arrest was "based on an initial medical report that suggested
injuries to the private parts of the girl."

"We are investigating. The picture will be clear only after a detailed probe,"
he said.

However, Church leaders denied the charge saying the three were
arrested in a bid to tarnish the image of the Church and create mistrust
 among people.

Father Antony Bara, vicar general of Ambikapur, told ucanews.com that
the arrests were made following pressure from right-wing Hindu
activists.

He also said activists of the Bajrang Dal, a militant Hindu
organization and youth wing of the Vishva Hindu Parishad (World Hindu
Council), staged a protest and pelted stones at the school, destroying a
 Marian statue.

Father Bara said the girl was staying in the Church-run hostel and
was suffering from a skin disease, including around her private parts.
Since she was not feeling comfortable, she sought permission from the
hostel warden to go home to stay with her mother.

Before letting her go, the helper at the hostel gave her a bath. When
the girl went home, her mother lodged a police complaint accusing the
priest, nun and the helper of sexual abuse, he added.

Bishop Patras Minj of Ambikapur in a statement said that the arrests
were a clear case of misuse of administrative powers as police officials
were clearly aware of the false charges.

He also blamed police of acting under pressure to tarnish Christians.

Meanwhile, the Cross Shrine of St. George Orthodox Church in Haldibadi, just 10
kilometers from the school, was vandalized.

"They managed to break one window of the sanctuary and attempted to
defile the holy place by throwing stones inside it," said Father Joshi
Varghese, the church's vicar.

Also, the cross fixed at the top of the shrine was broken as were glass panes
and floor and wall tiles.

Chhattisgarh was created in 2000, when it was carved out of Madhya
Pradesh, and both have since 2003 been ruled by the Bharatiya Janata
Party, the political arm of hard-line groups wanting to create a Hindu
theocratic state.

The Church says it has since been continuously on the receiving end of
anti-Christian harassment.

The majority of the region's some 110 million people are Hindus.
Christians form less than 1 percent of this number and the Church is
engaged primarily in education and health care among the poor.

Church critics, mostly extremist Hindu groups, allege that Church
work for the social betterment of the poor is a tactic for conversion.

*Details:*

Goa IT Professionals (GITP) group’s initiative, titled “Goans Empowered
with IT” (GEIT), to promote IT Education in Goan schools for better
employment in collaboration with the wider Goan IT and academic community
inducted the third and final rural school, Dayanand Bandodkar High School
(Gokuldem, Paddi, Quepem) into the program on 12th September.

The project actively supported by the StartupGoa, GITIC and other
well-wishers aims to expose every child in Goan schools, especially in the
villages, to the career opportunities galore in Computers and related
technologies positively affecting all spheres of human life today. Through
a series of sessions and courses on Computer Programming, App Development,
Robotics, Animation etc. the students will be introduced to this
fascinating world in fun and exciting ways to spark their interest for
further exploration through self-learning. Additionally, this initiative
also aims to help school teachers use IT to make regular subjects more
interesting, engaging and experiential to the students. In the first phase
this year GITP is working with 3 schools in Goa:

1. St. Bartholomew’s High School (Chorao, Tiswadi)

2. Azmane High School (Neura, Mandur, Tiswadi)

3. Dayanand Bandodkar High School (Gokulde, Padi, Quepem)

In subsequent phases of this initiative, GITP aims to reach out to these
charged school children, fuel their creativity and turn it into passion to
bring innovation and employment generation to the village level in Goa.

At the Gokulde school, situated at the foothills of the Western Ghats, many
students still walk 1-2 hours daily to reach their school and yet know
quite a lot about computers and IT in general. Their evident appetite to
grasp and learn new technologies was heartening to our GEIT team and holds
a clear promise to a people-driven economic upliftment of our Goan villages
while also preserving and documenting their local heritage and ancestral
knowledge for posterity.

Our GEIT Introductory session at this school began with a warm welcome by
the Headmaster, Mr. Velip followed by the President of their School Alumni
association, Mr. Pradeep Gaonkar, who is also part of our GEIT team, our
anchor for this school and is one of the most educated villagers from Padi
despite many hardships. From our team, Vincent ignited the minds of the 200
odd kids by talking to them about how IT can transform their lives. Then
Jonathan of Espressotive, supported by Sudhir, took the students on an
exciting ride with their presentation on IT, interesting videos and Google
Cardboard Virtual Reality 3D headset demos for 10 students and 2 teachers.
Subsequently Jervis spoke to the students about the way IT can help them
solve local problems around them.

Finally Nihal, Seeya and Pooja from GEC explained the students in simple
language how computers work similar to the human body and received a very
good response. We are grateful to their GEC Lecturer, Mr. Teslin Jacob, for
encouraging them to support Project GEIT. Even by themselves they now feel
that if they had been through an initiative like Project GEIT in their
school days then it would have made a big difference to their lives today.
And hence they want to give these village school kids what they missed.
Such conviction coming from today’s Goan youth fuels us all at Project GEIT.

Post this school student session, our team met with the school management
and staff. The Headmaster was very enthusiastic about the program and so
were the teachers. T

Self-styled bishops usurp prime Church of North India properties

Actions divert church resources, bishop says.

Posted on September 14, 2015, 4:59 PM

  New Delhi:
Self-styled bishops are claiming ownership of the vast assets of
the Church of North India and causing confusion among members, said the
head of a Protestant church grouping in northern India.

"Our
properties are on prime locations in India and worth billions of rupees
[and] are vulnerable for grabbing," Bishop P. K. Samantaroy of Amritsar,
moderator of the Synod, the church's highest decision-making body, told
ucanews.com. The church's vast land holdings were inherited from the
colonial British authorities.

The sole intention is to divide the
Christian community and confuse church members, the bishop said,
alleging that these self-proclaimed bishops had links to land mafias.

These
self-styled bishops make parallel management bodies of legitimate
church institutions and claim to be their rightful owners, he pointed
out.

"They have relentlessly tried to mislead government
officials and the public at large to fulfill their nefarious designs,"
Bishop Samantaroy said.

"The government ought to see the
authenticity of the ownership and make efforts to protect church
properties and institution by all means," he said, adding, "We do not
have the resources to do it."

The Church of North India was
formed on Nov. 29, 1970, with the uniting of the Anglican Church and the
Church of India, Pakistan, Burma and Ceylon. Since that day, these
churches ceased to exist in northern India and the properties they
independently owned came under the administration of Church of North
India, officials explained at a press conference in New Delhi Sept. 12.

The church has 27 dioceses across the country with an equal number of bishops.

The issue of self-styled bishops has been troubling the Church of North India
for some time now.

In
March this year, Rockus Sandhu, who proclaimed himself as the
Metropolitan of Church of India, Pakistan, Burma and Ceylon and chairman
of the Indian Church Trustees and four others were sentenced to three
years imprisonment for selling a piece of land belonging to the Church
of India's Amritsar diocese.

"It is high time we bring this issue
out in the public. People like Sandhu are misleading members of the
church and their actions could have serious implications for its
educational and medical institutions," said Alwan Masih, the Church of
North India's general secretary.

Sandhu, who is now on bail, is
also trying to destabilize the Church of North India's Delhi diocese as
he has declared one of its priests as the bishop of the diocese, he
said.

Bishop Samantaroy said his diocese is fighting more than
100 cases related to the sale of property and that there were seven
self-styled bishops operating in his diocese alone.

"It is very
unfortunate that the money which should be used for health care,
education, uplifting the poor and tribal communities goes to fighting
such battles in court. It is a total wastage of money," he said.

Pope's UN address comes on the foundation of his predecessors

Dennis Sadowski for Catholic News ServiceUnited StatesSeptember 15, 2015

Pope Francis' address to the U.N. General Assembly Sept. 25 will mark
the fifth papal speech delivered directly to representatives of the
world's governments.

His address will come almost 50 years to the day — Oct. 4, 1965 —
when Blessed Paul VI became the first pontiff to speak to the General
Assembly in what has become a hallmark of recent papal history.

While the exact content of Pope Francis' message will not be revealed
until he delivers his address, it's almost assured that topics
revolving around human dignity that form the foundation of Christian
life — concern for poor and marginalized people, migrants seeking
security, care for the environment — will be prominent themes in his
speech.

Pope Francis' three predecessors who spoke to the General Assembly —
Blessed Paul VI, St. John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI — addressed
issues reflecting the great social and political challenges of their
era. There is no reason to believe Pope Francis will change course,
especially at a time when the world is confronting serious challenges to
 the well-being of humanity.

Blessed Paul VI made history in 1965, as the Second Vatican Council
was ending, when he became the first pope to address the U.N. Outside of
the significant changes that were about to remake the Catholic Church,
the world was in the midst of the Cold War and the threat of nuclear war
formed the backdrop of Blessed Paul's concerns.

Pointing to the U.N.'s charter, which identified the unification of
countries for the betterment of humanity as a primary purpose of the
world body, Blessed Paul urged the world leaders to "make yourselves
equal" in an attempt to overcome pride, which leads to conflict and even
 war.

"Let no one as a member of your organization be superior to others;
not one over the other. This is the formula for equality Not that
you are all equal, but here you make yourselves equal. And it may well
be that for a number of you this calls for an act of great virtue,"
Blessed Paul said.

>From there, quoting President John F. Kennedy, Blessed Paul urged the
world representatives to put an end to war: "Mankind must put an end to
war, or war will put an end to mankind."

Human rights

At the 34th U.N. General Assembly on Oct. 2, 1979, St. John Paul held
up the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as the basis for all
action by the world body. He argued that each man and woman is "endowed
with dignity as a human person, with his or her own culture, experiences
and aspirations, tensions and sufferings and legitimate expectations."

Referencing the declaration, he said, "This document is a milestone
on the long and difficult path of the human race. The progress of
humanity must be measured not only by the progress of science and
technology, which shows man's uniqueness with regard to nature, but also
and chiefly by the primacy given to spiritual values and by the
progress of moral life."

He also questioned the morality of the arms race involving both
conventional and nuclear weapons. He said the willingness of nations to
seek new and more sophisticated weapons shows "that there is a desire to
be ready for war and being ready means being able to start it."

In St. John Paul's way of thinking, war was an affront to human dignity and
infringed upon basic human rights.

Addressing the General Assembly a second time, Oct. 5, 1995, on its
50th anniversary, St. John Paul had seen that the nuclear tensions of
the Cold War-era had eased. However, ethnic tensions in places such as
the Balkans and Central Africa as well as the rise of armed insurgencies
seeking to impose strict Islamic law throughout the Middle East had
emerged.

Acceptance of differences among people and cultures became one of St.
John Paul's key messages to the U.N. He again held up the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights as the guide for world action. Stressing the
"fundamental commonality" among people, St. John Paul called for a
sense of solidarity with persecuted people to emerge in U.N.
deliberations.

He also issued a call for the world body to build a "family of
nations" that would lead to "mutual trust, mutual support and sincere
respect."

Globalization

Pope Francis' predecessor, Pope Benedict, addressed the U.N. April
18, 2008, during his only trip to the United States. Pope Benedict took
the themes of early papal addresses and reiterated the call for the
respect of human dignity, religious freedom and the just distribution of
goods to build the human family.

POSTING OF ARUN DESSAI FROM RTO TO COLLECTORATE

Ref: Arun Dessai has been transferred and posted as Additional Collector-II
in the North Goa Collectorate published in Navhind Times dated 16th Sept
2015

It is interesting step taken by the Govt of Goa by transferring a person
from Director of Transport to Additional Collectorate-II and that too in
North Goa on account of corruption charges investigations in his RTO dept.
I understand that the Vigilance is on the job on account of their
staff-member peon Damu taking bribe of one lakh.
Instead of keep RTO Director Arun in suspension the Govt is looking for a
better posting where he can continue to do his stunts if he is found guilty.
Is this a solution to get the formalities done by giving a posh transfer
assignment? He could have very well been suspended than to allow him to
continue for a better posting.

[Goanet] Mistaken identity: Why private schools in India love to name themselves after Christian saints

When the principal of a Catholic-sounding school was arrested in Mumbai last
week, most people assumed it was a Church-run institution headed by a priest.
The confusion is understandable.Aarefa Johari · Sep 15, 2015 · 02:30 pmPhoto
Credit: Shoaib Daniyal79.6KTotal Views On September 11, soon after the
principal of an institution named St Xavier’s High School wasarrested in Mumbai
on charges of molesting two boys, some Indians on Twitter began simmering with
rage. The arrested principal is a man named Rosario Alphonso, and many Twitter
users took this as an opportunity to unleash a torrent of abuse against
Christian priests and paedophilia.

A lot of the abuse was channelled through the hashtag #ShameOnJohnDayal,
specifically targeting journalist and minority rights activist John Dayal who
had tweeted about the principal’s arrest by asking, who owns the school?

Unsurprisingly, many of those who saw news reports on the molestation assumed
that the school in question – St Xavier’s in Andheri East, Mumbai – is a
Christian institution whose principal must have been a priest. The assumption
is not entirely unfounded: most schools run by the Catholic church are headed
by priests and nuns, and in the past few years, cases of priests getting caught
for paedophilia have made international headlines.

But in this case, the assumption – and the abuse – was completely off the mark.

As Catholic as it may sound, St Xavier’s High School in Andheri East is
actually a private school, run by the Ryan Group of educational institutions
that also include the more well-known franchise of Ryan International Schools
around the country. The school’s trustees, Grace Pinto and AF Pinto, happen to
be Christian, but the school itself has no connections with the Church or any
of its denominations. The principal arrested for molestation is a Christian
too, but he was not a priest.

Common names

For institutions actually run by Christian church denominations, such cases of
mistaken identity are a familiar phenomenon. Everywhere across India, there
seem to be schools named after popular Christian saints – St Mary’s, St
Xavier’s, Don Bosco and dozens more. But contrary to expectations, a sizable
number of them are not the Church-run “convent” schools that they appear to be.

Typically, institutions named St Xavier’s or St Ignatius are run by the
Jesuits, a Catholic congregation of priests founded by Ignatius of Loyola in
the 16th century. Don Bosco institutions are run by the Salesians, another
Catholic congregation.

“But there are many other private Don Bosco schools in India that have nothing
to do with the Salesians,” said Father Nigel Barrett, the spokesperson for the
Archdiocese of Bombay, the central body of the Roman Catholic church in the
city.

In the Mumbai metropolitan region, there are at least eight Don Bosco
institutions officially run by the Salesian order, but at least four that are
private and unaffiliated to the Church. Similarly, there Archdiocesan board of
education runs at least 150 schools in Mumbai and Thane district, but that
number does not include dozens of other schools named after various “saints”.

“St Xavier’s is a much more common name than Don Bosco among private non-Church
schools,” said Father Savio Silveira, a Salesian priest at Don Bosco, Matunga.

The Ryan International group, for instance, has at least 10 educational
institutions named after St Xavier across India, in addition to schools named
after St Lawrence, St Joseph, St Francis, St Mary and Fr Agnelo.

At times, schools manage to sound like Christian schools even without a
Christian name. This Hindi-medium school in Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki district,
for instance, is named after a 19th century Sufi saint – Haji Waris Ali – but
the choice of “St” as a prefix instead of “Haji” or “Pir” is telling:

What’s in a name?

For church-run institutes, having multiple namesakes among private schools can
be a double-edged sword. Getting an English-medium “convent” education has long
been a goal for middle-class Indians, so private schools named on the lines of
Christian schools can be seen as an acknowledgement of the success of
church-run institutes.

The Church sees education as a social mission, "but there are some private
schools who see it as a business, and they use names of saints because it is
good for business”, said Barrett. “But the problem arises only when there is an
issue, like this case of child molestation.”

At times like these, the church and the schools that share the same name are
dragged into the controversy. But there is little that the church has been able
to do.

In 2011, Salesian priests filed a case against a private trust in Madhya
Pradesh for registering and c

Goa University:Cutting off the roots
The slow whittling away at Goa University's land and stature by the
government, is not the right way to treat an integral state institution
By Pamela D'Mello
The Goan, 14 September 2015

As Panjim expands and spreads into the neighbouring villages, as government
finds the need to put in more infrastructure for some of the major events
(like the International Film Festival of India) that it hosts and other
utilities and for myriad private interests   the state?s premier public
university has been seen as a sitting duck. It has been steadily losing its
campus land, as government finds it convenient to simply help itself to
campus land, rather than search for alternative sites to locate some of its
buildings.

University Executive Council sources admit that the university is all the
time under tremendous pressure from government to part with additional
parcels of its campus. As a state funded university, dependent on
government funds and approvals for all its requirements, including  filling
of faculty posts, service extensions  et al the university finds itself
at a distinct disadvantage.

The current Vice Chancellor has repeatedly pointed this out in the public,
arguing for  the constitution of a task force of citizens to help draw a
master plan to preserve Goa University?s property. From the data, it is
quite clear there is scant respect for the geographic integrity of the
university campus, by the very entity that set it up and is charged with
fostering its present and future growth. Of the 16.30 lakh sq m, the
University was allotted when it was set up in June 1985, it has already
lost 43,000 sq m to four non educational buildings constructed by
government on its campus over the years. The ETDC complex hosting the
electronic testing lab of the central government was granted  a  99 year
lease on 3500 sq m, at Rs 1 per year. The BSNL telephone exchange
occupies  2500

Dear Miridula Sinha
You Excellency Governor of Goa

Madam,

Kindly go through the letter of Aires ( enclosed),  which we all feel that
Goa Govt should restrict unnecessary wasteful government expenditure as the
Government is going  bankrupt.
As a Governor of Goa,  will you advice Parsekar Government to stop such
wasteful expenditure?
I was told by reliable sources, that you Madam,  have acted on my complaint
to you recently on Swatch Bharat mission, for PANJIM  CLEAN, and that you
have called up for a meeting  with present MLA Sidarth Kunkolienkar and
other dignitaries including Goa Pollution Control Board,  to see that
Panjim is taken on top priority for Swatch Bharat cleanness for which I am
grateful to you .
I am planing to send some more photographs to you shortly, from certain
areas in Panjim showing the MESS.
Hope they start acting on your advice to keep  Panjim clean, good
environment and no pollution,  with minimum expenditure which I doubt that
Panjim or any other city in Goa, will be a  SMART CITY and I am sure that
the plan will never materialized before the forthcoming
assembly  election in 2017 just like the JNNURM and other projects have
failed.
Regards,
Thanks

In the second images, It is surprising that the transliteration of Bom
Jesus in Devnagiri is wrong. The sound of "Bom" must have an -n ending, and
not as it shown in Devnagiri. Jesus should be transliterated as Jesu!

Even in English it ought to be pronounced as we do while speaking in
Konkani, and of course Portuguese although we write it as Bom Jesus (Bon
Jesu).

NEW DELHI: The Supreme court on Thursday refused to interfere in Bombay HC
order lifting ban on sale of meat during Jain festival season Paryushan.A bench
of justices TS Thakur and Kurian Joseph objected to the manner in which the ban
was being enforced saying that it can't be forced down people's throats. The
bench said that the authority should be tolerant towards people opposing the
ban.The bench was hearing a petition filed by a religious body challenging HC
order on lifting the ban.Join TOI campaign: Ban the bansIn pics: Banned in

constitution and it also includes towards treatment to animals. It contended
that animals should also be treated with compassion and most of the countries
believe in such philosophy. The bench then remarked "Why compassion only during
festival and why not all the time".The bench agreed that compassion towards
animals is growing across the world but any ban on sale can't be forced on
people."It is happening throughout the country and world. Spirit of tolerance
