*Lankan challenge for India on Christmas Day*

By Nilanjan Datta,
AIFF Media Team

*THIRUVANANTHAPURAM (TRIVANDRUM):* “Look at his face. He looks a
schoolboy,” uttered Sunil Chhetri pointing to Lallrinzuala. “He reminds me
of Bhaichung-*bhai *when he first came in,” Chhetri adds. Zuala, just 18,
smiles.

“Who’s your idol – Jerry Zirsanga or Mama (Shylo Malsawmtulanga)?” Chhetri
carries on the conversation.

“Yourself,” Zuala points his finger at Chhetri. This time Chhetri seems a
bit embarrassed; but quips back: “Who are your other favourite Players?”

“Lalrindika Ralte,” Zuala informs. The conversation thereafter revolves
around Football in Mizoram and the quality Football which Mama has played
over the years.

At the practice session, another Mizo – the irrepressible Jeje Lalpekhlua
is the first one to hit the ground. The others follow. Pritam Kotal,
Narayan Das, Rowlin Borges, Pronay Halder, Holicharan Narzary, Gurpreet
Singh Sandhu, Kaushik Sarkar, Thongkhosiem Haokip, Sumit Passi are all
below 23. When did India last have it for a Senior Team? Ever?

Post morning practice, the journalists gather around the National Coach.
“When I took over I had to make a choice -- either to continue with the
tried and tested whose average age was around 30, or to rebuild the squad.
I opted for the second despite being aware that it won’t deliver you
immediate results,” Constantine waves his hand.

“We have lost Sandesh (Jhingan who’s also an U-23 Player), Lobo (Cavin) and
Seityasen Singh. Anas pulled a hamstring and we had to release him too.
Besides, there are a number of guys whom we need to be careful with,”
Constantine states.

“I could have easily played Jhingan and Lobo. They could have played in
this Tournament and their presence would have certainly strengthened my
squad. But if I played them here they would have missed the next six
months,” this time Constantine shakes his head.

In the Footballing World, the true definition of a Coach stays in
protecting his Players and not exploiting them for short term results, any
sensible one will reiterate umpteenth times.

After the initial silence, someone queried: “What’s your opinion about Sri
Lanka?”

“They play a defensive formation and will hit us on the counter attacks.
They have some decent Players and work extremely hard.

There are no easy games for us -- in fact, against anybody. I expect Sri
Lanka to give everything they have. We have to be patient and see what
happens,” the Coach uttered in one breath.

Even as the boys worked on the set plays, the tireless Goalkeeping Coach
Rogerio Ramos, who it seems can stay on the field for more than 24 hours
worked ruthlessly with his Keepers. The best part stays that his Keepers
wait for his ruthlessness. They know, it makes them better – they die for
it.

Referring to a question whether Subrata (Paul) can push Gurpreet (Singh
Sandhu and retain his position under the citadel, Constantine hits back
hard. “If Subrata didn’t have a chance he won’t have been here. I have
never had any attachment for Players of what they have done in the past,”
he states sternly.

“It’s all about NOW,” this time his voice echoes in the large room.
Everyone needs to be the type of Player which suits the National Team.”

The Sun by 9am is quite scorching despite it being December. Even as a cold
shower stays the best thing after the session at around 35 degrees, the
Players go and sit out in the ice bath.

Forget the snow and the Reindeers but nevertheless the heat doesn’t stop
the smiles of the innumerable Santa Clauses smiling from over a hundred
hoardings all over in the City. All of a sudden you remember the cakes, the
wines and the turkeys and start

[Goanet] A dramatic book about the devastations of mining in Goa (Augusto Pinto)

2015-12-24 Thread Goanet Reader
By Augusto Pinto
pinto...@gmail.com

Consistent with Hartman De Souza's background in
theatre, Eat Dust* is a very dramatic book about
the devastations that mining has caused in Goa. It
reads like a documentary in print, for his
  descriptions of landscapes before and after mining;
and encounters with people feel like a camera is
recording what he is doing. At the same time, his
style is full of adjectives and metaphors that aim
to persuade you to think his way.

For us in Goa the basic story of the degradation caused by
mining is quite familiar, but Hartman adds a personal touch
to it as he weaves his sister Cheryl's fight against five
powerful mine-owners who wanted to devastate her farm in
Cawrem, Sanguem taluka, into the narrative. Along with this
are struggles of other mining activists with the governments
who were totally bought out by the mining lobby.

Although I get the feeling that the audience for *Eat Dust*
are Indians outside Goa, the book is a great primer to the
people of Goa because it does not just focus on mining but on
the social and political and historical context in which the
mining is carried out. Hartman is pretty bitter about the
role of the elite in Goa and about the way they have remained
silent spectators.

To understand this Hartman points his fingers at
not just mining and the infrastructure and the
tourism and real estate lobbies but he regards the
greatest danger of all to be "consumerism". What
that means is all of us who are hooked on to the
good things of life all of which cost money, money
which has to be got somehow or the other to feed
our greed. The poor who sell their land to
mine-owners for a pittance become part of the
problem because to survive they then buy trucks to
transport ore for a livelihood and now have a stake
in the destruction of the environment. The middle
classes don't have the time to care much one way or
  the other.

So what Hartman is saying is that while the demoniacal greed
of the mine-owners is definitely deadly, the common people
also have no clue as to what they are doing while the
intellectual class (you and I) who may be able to see what is
happening have all also let Goa down.

The author is quite bitter with the approach taken by NGOs
such as Goa Foundation of Claude Alvares who have used the
legal route to stop the illegalities of mining. By the end
of the book he seems to be accusing Claude to have sold out
by abandoning the ideal of stopping mining and of being
willing to accept that mining is okay if regulated and if the
money goes into the State's coffers. I think this is a bit
unfair as the Shah Commission which the author praises for
its role in stopping mining for a while would never have been
appointed without the ground work done by Goa Foundation.

Among the institutions which are seen to be playing
a dubious role in the rape of Goa is the Catholic
Church. It does not raise its considerable voice
and allows the Gavdes who are the ones most
directly affected by mining to suffer. And nobody
seems to care about the long term loss of a basic
necessity of man through mining: water.

But what is done? Hartman advocates force.

Hartman's family who bravely try to display the courage of
their convictions by literally putting their bodies on the
line by for instance chaining themselves to the gate of a
mine in Cawrem discover that such attempts are too feeble to
work. His octogenarian mother Dora participated in this
incredibly crazy protest. However the problem was that this
was not properly prepared and neither was it widely known
thanks to the stranglehold the mining lobby have over the
media. Maybe Hartman has a point but unless there is a huge
mass opposing mining such physical displays are easy to get
rid of. And there are lots of Right wing actors who will be
happy to disrupt mass mining protests.

At the end of the day this is a book that needs to
be distributed read and discussed widely in Goa.
Right now mining may not resume at the ruinous rate
it was formerly used to, because the demand for the
low grade ore of Goa has gone down and so have the
prices for this commodity. But there is no saying
that it won't resume in future -- and then what?

[Goanet] Thank You for your music Remo

2015-12-24 Thread Sandeep Heble
Thank You for your music Remo

The issue of citizenship is being blown out of proportion. Remo is a singer
of International fame and repute and we have always loved him because of
his songs, not for anything else. If not for his music, we would not have
even known who he is. Just another citizen like millions of others, that is
who he would have been. So many voluntarily give up their Indian
Nationality to opt for citizenship of other Nations, does that become an
issue? We all have our friends or relatives in foreign countries who have
gone there for better prospects and we have respected their choice. Have
they ceased to be our friends or relations simply because they have
exercised that personal choice?

What religion one follows or whether one even believes in God or not, what
food one eats, what clothes one wears, what culture or lifestyle one
follows, what language one speaks, which State or Country one wishes to
travel and settle down in are all matters of personal choice. Likewise with
citizenship. We cannot and should not hold anything against an individual
simply because he or she wishes to exercise that personal choice or
freedom. Our Constitution gives us certain rights and privileges and so
long as these rights and privileges exercised are within ethical and legal
standards prescribed, it shouldn't concern anyone. The manner in which
Remo's citizenship is being debated and blown into an issue is a bit sad.
Is Remo an elected representative or a Government official? Has he
committed any crime? Why should the singer who's brought such great fame
and pride to Goa be singled out in this fashion?

The only charge against Remo is of uttering a few harsh words to the minor
girl involved in his son's accident. As of now, this is merely an
accusation and Remo has outrightly denied having said the same. No
independent witness has corroborated this and it is easily possible there
could have been a misunderstanding in interpretation of words. But is the
charge so serious so as to warrant a look-out notice against him or to
charge him under sections which prescribe imprisonment for up to 3 years
and/or a fine of up to Rs 1 lakh? This cant be real! We are a Country with
a bright future and our democracy cannot be reduced to a level where law is
used in such a draconian manner against an individual. The citizenship
issue which is being raised as follow-up to the accident incident is on
similar absurd lines.

The Mangeshkar family left Goa to settle elsewhere but we are still proud
of their Goan roots and adore them. The Auditorium in Kala Acadamy is named
after Pandit Dinanath Mangeshkar and we are proud of him. We are proud of
Lata and Asha. So many Goans have likewise settled in different parts of
the world and have made name and fame there. We are proud of their
achievements and accomplishments and that is how it must be. Slogans and
rhetoric on the basis of Nationality and religion are old clichés now. Such
rhetoric used or misused few decades back is no longer relevant today. It
does not strike chords with the current generation which is smarter. Now,
TV and technology has brought us closer. Messi, Ronaldo, Sharapova,
Federer, Beatles, Elvis, Whitney, Usain Bolt are household names for the
present generation. The fan following for them may even surpass our own. We
are proud of our Nation but we also recognize talent and achievements of
others wherein lies our real strength and greatness. The greatness of human
values to overcome other divisive boundaries. Political boundaries are but
one such division. Even if Remo may be divided from us because of political
boundaries, the human values must unite us with him and with his music.

Remo must be recognized for what he is and for what he always has been, a
singer par excellence having a unique style of his own. A style of music
which is a fusion of so many different forms. We grew up listening to
Remo's songs from albums like Pack that smack, Bombay City, O Meri Munni
and so many more which became huge hits. His wonderful rendition of Konkani
& Portuguese songs like Undra mujhea mama & Maria Pitache, his Bollywood
numbers like Humma Humma, Pyar to hona hi tha, Huya Ho and not to forget
the legendary track which he ends his concerts with, Dekho Dekho yeh hai
Jalwa have made him one of Goa and India's most loved singers. From a 'just
another local lad from Siolim' to have achieved so much, he has been
inspirational in every sense. His song, 'Vote: Tit for Tat', composed
specially to encourage people to vote corrupt out became viral, like so
many of his other socio-political songs to expose the various evils
prevalent in our land. Remo has not only been a musician of acclaim but is
also an activist whose love for Goa cannot be questioned.

'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' is an ancient Indian thought which means the entire
world constitutes but one family. Divisions are but man made and must
slowly cease to exist as Nations and World progress. Like John Lennon's

[Goanet] The joy of not knowing (Samar Halarnkar in Mint)

2015-12-24 Thread V M
http://linkis.com/www.livemint.com/Lei/Jghsu

It was Naomi Duguid (pronounced Do-good) who introduced me, earlier
this month, to “the joy of not knowing”. I was very struck by the
phrase because (a) it appeared an apt motto for someone who has
written six books on global culinary journeys (her seventh is due next
year) and (b) it is sound advice for those of us who get our joys from
sameness and believe there isn’t much left to experience.

A strapping, adventurous and amiable Canadian, Duguid persuaded me to
accompany her—one sunny morning in Panaji (we were both there for the
annual Goa Arts and Literature Festival)—to the city’s sprawling
vegetable and fish market. I must confess that despite being of Goan
origin and making many visits to Goa, I had never ventured into the
Panaji market.

I love markets, and I sighed with pleasure at the sight of fruits and
vegetables known and unknown and the opportunity to practise my
sketchy Konkani. As we walked through the produce section, Duguid
busied herself with photographs and interrogated, through me, vendors
garrulous and taciturn, men and women. Since this was Goa, where many
foreigners make their home, and the people are generally more
accommodating of obvious outsiders, Duguid could wander and photograph
at peace without being stared at or mobbed.

After a coconut break, where the chatty vendor told me the sweetest
water came from coconuts that grew on trees beside rivers, we found
ourselves in the spice section. We marvelled at the varieties of
chillies and fragrant piles of triphal and kokum, both souring agents
used in Goan cuisine, particularly fish curries.

Now, Goan fish curries hold few mysteries for me. I know all there is
to know; the thin caldins, the sour coconut-less ambotiks and, best of
all, my grandmother’s fish curry. But since I was buoyed by Naomi’s
philosophy, I listened carefully when Vallabh Kolvekar—an unsmiling,
young man who ran a stall in Panaji market’s spice section—asked if I
would like to see a home-made garam masala.

Garam masala, I thought. Why would I want that? I make my own, and,
moreover, what’s so special about a collection of ground spices? That
was a pretty arrogant thought, imbued with the Indian know-it-all
quality.

“Sure,” I said to Kolvekar, trying to look interested, “let’s see it.
Who makes the masala?”

He frowned. “I make it.”

Kolvekar gravely offered me a handful of spice. I smelt it. My eyes
widened. Smelling a spice is like tasting a wine. Multiple flavours
and bouquets were evident; I could discern red chilli, cinnamon and
clove. Kolvekar said it contained 18 spices. I asked for 200g. He
wrapped it in a plastic bag and handed it over, along with some shiny,
juicy-looking kokum, which I bought because my stocks were running
low.

Kolvekar and I discussed his masala. So, I could use it for a fish
curry without coconut? Hmm, that was not quite right, he said, because
this was a masala that was best with coconut, the base of most Goan
fish curries.

When I returned home, I discarded my wariness of coconut, aided by the
news that it was rapidly being taken off cardiac danger lists, and the
result was one of the tangiest, tastiest fish curries to have emerged
from my kitchen. It was even better than my long-standing version of
ajji’s fish curry, and that is saying something.

It was good to use someone else’s knowledge, to let go of what I knew.
That, in a limited way, is what the joy of not knowing can do for you.
Used in full measure, Duguid told me, it was fuel for travel,
discovery and new journeys.

“I suppose it starts with getting clear of the idea that I am, or that
I should be, in control or on top of things,” Duguid told me on email
after she returned home. “You could view it as a relinquishing of
responsibility, but I think of it as an opening out. If I don’t know,
and admit that and enjoy that, then it gives me the impetus to go out
and ask questions and be curious. I am very curious about how things
work and about all kinds of details. If I’m not afraid to show others
that I don’t know, that leaves me free to ask all kinds of questions,
very obvious ones, without worrying that they might seem foolish or
superficial or make me seem ignorant.”

I could not agree more.

Goan fish curry with Vallabh’s Panaji market masala

Serves 4-6

Ingredients

1kg kingfish (surmai) or any other firm sea fish, cut into fillets or
slices with bone (I prefer bone because it imparts greater taste)

1 coconut, grated or cut into small pieces

15 pieces kokum, soaked in a little warm water

1-inch piece fresh ginger

20 pieces garlic, chopped fine

4 tsp (5 if you like it spicy) Vallabh’s garam masala (replace with
any other red-chilli-based masala)

2 tsp vegetable oil

Salt, to taste

Method

Grind the coconut, ginger, salt and garam masala in a food processor
with half to one cup of water. After grinding, the coconut masala
should be thick.

In a medium-hot wok, heat the oil and add the chopped garlic. Sauté

From Goa IT Professionals www.goaitpro.org

We would like to keep you informed of the message we have conveyed to the
concerned departments of Govt of Goa.

We are notifying the concerned departments well in advance. Goa Govt is
expected to have the administrative framework in place for participating in
such events. Our IT Policy is expected to be ready before the summit.

While other states would be participating in this event, Goa cannot afford to
lose out on the opportunity. Let the world feel the idea of Goa as an
Industrial Investment destination. The need to attract sustainable and
eco-friendly industries to Goa and provide employment to Goan youth within the
state is too important to be ignored.

Goa IT Professionals would be more than *willing to provide any assistance*
that is requested in making this effort a success. We can help in
conceptualizing the presentation, booth or any other form of participation.
