[Goanet] Don’t drag Savarkar in naming controversy

2016-01-10 Thread Sandeep Heble
Don’t drag Savarkar in naming controversy

Whether or not one should name Institutions in the State after prominent
Goans is another issue which is worth pondering. But one can’t deny that
Vinayak Savarkar happens to be a great literary figure cum revolutionary
freedom fighter from India of which Goa is a part of. It is strange that
NCP Leaders should ask, “Who is Veer Savarkar?”, considering the NCP’s main
base is in Maharashtra where Savarkar is a giant in literary circles. These
NCP leaders should brush their knowledge of history.

Savarkar was a poet, novelist, writer, playwright, historian and a
revolutionary freedom fighter who sacrificed a lot for India. As children,
we grew up learning lessons of his bravery in our history. For his
revolutionary methods, the British sentenced him to 50 years of
imprisonment in Andaman’s Cellular Jail where he was made to undergo
rigorous solitary confinement for several months, standing handcuffs and
hell like torture (released with limited freedoms after serving 13
torturous years in prison). But his spirit never died. In Cellular prison,
he composed and wrote poetries on prison walls with thorns and pebbles when
the British were merciless and even denied him pen and paper. His poems
like Sagara pran talmalala (O Great Sea, My Heart Aches for the
Motherland), Jayostute (written in praise of freedom) are very inspiring
and demonstrate the kind of love he had for his motherland.

Savarkar is credited with writing more than 10,000 pages in the Marathi
language and our PM recently released two albums of poems composed by him.
He wrote also in Hindi, Urdu and few other languages. "Kamala", "Mazi
Janmathep" (My Life Sentence), and 1857 - The First War of Independence,
which the British referred to as the "Sepoy Mutiny", are few of his other
popular literary works. Large part of his literature is dedicated to mother
India, the land he deeply loved. To inspire Indians to love and respect
their motherland, he wrote few chapters on the golden period of Indian
history which are epic.

One could agree or disagree with the political methods or ideology adopted
by Savarkar during his later years but it would be wrong to discredit him
or ask provocative questions like “who is he?”. Savarkar is a monumental
personality in every true sense and there is so much one can write about
him. He was an agnostic, a reformist, a patriot, and had a lot of other
inspiring qualities which one can endlessly list. A forward thinking Indian
who fought caste orthodoxy with a lot of ruthlessness. A humanist and one
of the first Indian political leaders to build a pan-Hindu temple where a
former 'untouchable' was a priest. A Nationalist who exhorted India to make
atomic bombs and believed it was ridiculous and irrational to follow
astrology when Russians and Americans were striving to land on Moon and
Mars. A rationalist who refused to consider cow as holy and chose to call
it only a very useful animal. An environmentalist who considered cremation
in electric crematoriums more clean and efficient (eco-friendly in modern
terms). For all the sacrifices he made, India popularly refers to him as
‘Swatantryaveer’ Savarkar, or simply Veer.

If NCP leaders want Goan Landmarks to be named after prominent Goans, then
it is an issue worth considering and debating. But why bring Savarkar at
the heart of this debate? We have an Auditorium in Ponda named after Rajiv
Gandhi and a Football stadium at Fatorda after Jawaharlal Nehru. Likewise,
various other roads, institutions and other landmarks have been named on
the basis of political considerations. Why is the NCP silent about these
names?

Let a uniform policy be applied while giving names to our institutions and
landmarks. We should welcome such an initiative. But creating a division by
raking up an issue for political motives is wrong and unfair to those who
have sacrificed a lot for the Nation. NCP leaders can make their point but
it would be more appropriate if they show proper respect to our freedom
fighters which will serve the cause of National integration better.

Warm regards,
Sandeep Heble

[Goanet] Restoration of paintings and frames skills come to Goa

2016-01-10 Thread Goanet News
The London School of Picture and Frame Restoration has for almost twenty
years been one of the top institutions in the United Kingdom, training
conservators to restore paintings on canvas and on wood support as well as
restoring frames. The College Principal, Caterina Goodhart, trained in
Florence (Italy) before moving to the UK, has more than thirty years’
experience.

On a trip to Goa in early 2015 she was moved by the artworks in the
churches that she decided to return and to share her knowledge and
experience, in order that a new generation of conservators can grow and
develop in Goa. And she proposed to begin her work with the Portrait
Gallery of the Archbishops of Goa, which is in need of restoration, as some
of the portraits date back to the 16th century.

Supported by the Archbishop of Goa and by the Museum of Christian Art, Old
Goa, this project will initially run for five weeks, at Archbishop’s House,
Altinho, Panjim, beginning on the 15th of January, 2016.

During this time, would-be conservators will receive an introduction to
conservation equivalent to a first year diploma, learn the basic principles
of cleaning, patching, relining, colour matching and varnishing, and do
practical work on actual paintings and frames, with close tuition. The
course is aimed chiefly at men or women of all ages who are interested in
the possibility of starting a new career in the field and thus ensure a
legacy in conservation skills in Goa.

Spaces are limited to not more than 8 students.

No prior skills are required and there are no teaching fees. However, if
the students, at the end of the course, are found to be eligible for a City
& Guilds of London Institute qualification and certificate, fees will
apply. Interested individuals may inquire at dcscm...@gmail.com or call
telephone numbers 2433618 or 9822181790. Restorers and conservators in Goa
are also welcome to make contact with Ms. Goodhart at dcscm...@gmail.com or

[Goanet] Goanet] : LESSONS THAT GOANS MUST LEARN

2016-01-10 Thread Stephen Dias
-
-- -INTERESTING QUESTIONS OF THIS WEEK--

FROM HERALD WHICH I READ EARLY MORNING ON LINE BEFORE OTHER PAPERS, I GET
MYSELF PREOCCUPIED DIGESTING CERTAIN IMPORTANT TOPICS WHICH THE EDITOR
 MAKES IT--

>From THE Editorial " BHAI PARRIKAR'S BHAIGUIRI IS CLEARLY EVIDENT IN GOA
GOVERNMENT FUNCTIONING"-

 Comments:

It is true that Bhai Raj is day by day increasing in this state, and many
people calls them 'Bhai' to get their work done and that they are been
successful. For Parrikar is probably an exception that he was always known
as BHAI:. Now since he is out of Goa as Defence Minister the Bhai word in
BJP circle is diminishing.
The Editor has forgotten to mention another word which is mostly used
especially by Catholics that is " BAB" This is an another expression of
showing love to someone else, although people utter this work just to show
off, that they are friends in ages.
For ladies this word is seldom used but they say "BHAI-ghe" or " Bhaie" as
a sort of another closeness to the individual.-For "ghantis" coming mostly
from other states who are of lower casts people call them as " Bhaiyya"
and earlier times during Portuguese regime we used to call these people
especially who are working at docks at MPT Marmagoa as "BOYAS"-.

Second point which I noticed that the Editor has emphasized in his
Editorial column is Parsekar looks at " COMMUNAL HARMONY' in the state.-

Comments:

Parsekar does not have to be educated how people in Goa can come together
and gets the unity back which is lost during BJP regime. He wants people to
give suggestions and may be he can implement them, so that in the
next forthcoming elections he will surely have a slot to win the elections.
No doubt it is a clever move but first of all, has he aware that some
outfit from a Hindutava group coming to this state and disorient Goans to
get disharmony among the minorities group and the Church in particular?
Another most important group is RSS which is dominating the whole country
and are now trying to penetrate in this state and decentralize its unity
which was there in Goa among Hindus, Muslims and Catholics.

And the third point which I noticed , there are some activists/lawyers
who like to become famous by hook and crook and show that they are doing
good work for the state even they do not mind damaging prestige of their
colleagues or friends for ulterior motives.

I feel pity for Remo although he committed big mistakes but people will not
forgive him even if he has to surrender passport, his election card,
Padmashree award, and even his car purchased during that period of
acquiring foreign nationality. He has no God fathers left now, who will
help him, at this crucial moment but he should at least attend and behave
well hereafter what is being instructed by the Judiciary or Police or
anybody else.

[Goanet] Jallikatu, tradition in Tamilnadu

2016-01-10 Thread Nelson Lopes
JALLIKATU, THE TRADITON IN TAMIL NADU

The SC has permitted this sport with a rider and certain conditions to
prevent cruelty to animals. The coming of elections is an incentive to
revive this popular sport and is welcomed by the C.M as fulfillment of a
popular need. It is being argued that it is a particular species of violent
bull that is a choice. The argument is that the bull is intoxicated,
pierced, starved, subjected to various other inhuman methods to goad it
into a fierce movement of action, Visuals of the sport, it is seen that
enthusiastic participants try to subdue it by catching it by horns, pulling
the tail of a terribly frightened bull, What is most disturbing, giving a
creepy feeling is the serious, deadly dangerous risk to life and limb
undertaken by the few participants at what costs to the amusements of the
crowds, Is the cruelty to the bull primarily overweighs the risk to the
participants.? Are the prodders too hired, drugged and intoxicated not to
understand the serious risk to themselves?

Is the meaning of cruelty to animals stretched beyond limits of elasticity?
Human can slaughter pigs, chickens, lambs, sheep, bulls. fish etc for its
own needs of food and pleasure and it does not embrace selectively the
definition of cruelty. In the animal world too carnivorous animals,
reptiles, birds, even fish species, mercilessly hunt and instinctively
prey upon other defenseless animals for food and is not considered as
cruelty. in the animal world

The human beings justify massacring their own species in wars, bloody
encounters and the term cruelty does not apply. The earlier human fights in
Coliseum in Rome are abhorrent. The sports of bull fights is popular
acceptance of entertainment in many parts of the world and we trying to ape
the west is no justification in permitting, reviving such entertainments at
costs to human life. Even the sport of boxing at times borders on severe
risks to participants and it is still continued as entertainment.

Now Goa too is waiting with bated breath, hopefully to revival of popular
bull fights, The Govt. of Goa and Ministers have in different voices
indirectly support the revival of sports calling it traditional
,cultural aspect and popular demand Even then Congress MP promised to
revive it on being elected. The bull fights in Goa are not organized
systematically, The bulls are brought together in some field and the
message spread by mouth and now by phone, Immediately enthusiast in drones
descend on the scene The bulls may engage or not, but none goads them to
action. The duration of encounter varies Sometimes the losing bull may be
injured very badly. At times the bulls , or one of the frightened bull
may run wild and thus mortally injure the spectators, But it is very rare,
What may be expected is proper ring, enclosure for the bulls and safe
arrangement for spectators. What is not disclosed openly is the
transactions of large bets that is the bone of contention behind this
sport.

CRIBS DURING CHRISTMAS

The Villages like Cansaulim, Cuelim, Arossim have developed expertise,
exquisite taste in erecting these biblical scenes /cribs. It requires
involvement, investment, creativity and time,. Every year these scenes are
totally different and never repeated, The donations by visitors is a matter
of good gesture, but does not compensate financially. There is commitment
and thinking and execution, Individual are motivated for ulterior and
internal satisfaction The multitudes of people from all over Goa
,thronging to these sites on crib tours is the proof of appreciation,
recognition, Noticeably people of other faith seem to patronize these
events. It looks like this experiment is catching on in other parts, The
Agali and Nuvem cribs were equally tasteful and educative .Nuvem in
particular there was a meaningful running commentary. In the above arrears
mentioned there were scale down models in various places and equally worth
visiting. Some efforts at Colva, Fatorda are measuring up to expected
standards and are likely to undergo improvement over time, depending
primarily on financial sponsors, well-wishers and field workers, There
is carpentry , masonry work, layout, sceneries, statues and dress etc. The
time taken runs from month to 25 days of consistent devotion The
villagers of Arossim, Cuelim, Cansaulim take great pride and are the
pioneers in this art form As far as I know Goa is one of the most important
place hosting cribs of such magnitude and taste. There should be
consolidated information of all important cribs set ups and undertaken by
Dept of Art and Culture and this could be most informative and helpful to
crib visitors. Many of the scenes have been posted on FB giving an idea to
those in Goa and abroad who are unaware and cannot make it to the sites

The Goa Art and culture Dept, has done well to offer prizes for competition
and is right step for encouragement, recognition, appreciation and
preserving the culture

SHEVTO STATE FISH, MADAR CHODLO

Shevto (Mugil Cephalus) is the pride on Goan plate.. It is declared as the
state fish, People opine that BANGDA( Mackerel), the reciado delicacy
sought by visitors in particular has unfortunately missed its place in the
reckoning. Lead in Maggie noodles are 2-5 ppm of lead. There is more lead
in portable water, milk, tea, poultry products, vegetables, fish Shevto in
contrast shevto has 3 to 16 ppm lead in edible part (muscle) . It is found
in polluted waters. The fish smells of diesel. often has visible
infectious and without toxicological and pathological analysis. It is well
known that estuaries, are chemically, biological, microbiological pollution
with nitrates ,heavy metals, oil ,grease phosphates, grease,
agrochemical residues, coli forms, pesticides , insecticides,
pharmacological active substances, pathogens also in shell fish. Shevto
is notorious in accumulations toxic metals like cadmium, red spot
infections. NIO analysis of shevto from Vishakapatnam, found zinc,
manganese, iron, copper, nickel, cobalt,, lead concentration in muscles,
gills, brain, bone, eyes, liver too. Accumulating from surrounding waters.
Shevto has 24 genera and 72 species and worldwide distribution. Myxosporea,
a parasite infects world wide mullets. Gastrointestinal tract is source is
a major infectious route Goa fish farm at old Goa found Myorides in gut
analysis. Goa shevto has myxobolous muelleri ,myxobolous parvus
,myxobolous exiguous , myxobolous epsiquamalis, myxobolous spinacurvatura
Shevto is almost a dangerous factory of anthropogenic chemicals

It is the prerogative of Govt to declare as state species as per
Biodiversity Board under act 2002 Fisheries dept,Director of Food and Drug
administration have failed in their responsibility in informing the
consumers about safety standards after a thorough analysis from well known
analysis ob mullets

Those that want to give Shevto a place of pride on your plate better think

from any where in India too Presently the fish comes from Andhra, Karwar,
West Bengal etc

[Goanet] designate coconut tree as state tree

2016-01-10 Thread Nelson Lopes
DESIGNATE COCONUT TREE AS STATE TREE

It Is now clarified by the BJP Govt, that over 450 years belief that the
designation of coconut tree as a tree is scientifically a misnomer. It is
scientifically a palm or some put it sarcastically as grass. Generally
the sane opinions of select, knowledgable, important people, legislators are
against this classification and vouched to protest loudly, except that it
is only the Minister in BJP Govt laboring at justification, further
depending on the wisdom and good sense of Goans not to cut down the
coconut tree indiscriminately. It is advisable to designate it as a state
tree to ensure its protection

The greenery of Goan environment largely consists of such prominent trees
everywhere dotting the skyline, which gives a distinct look and identity.
The beaches adorn the swaying coconut trees beckoning the visitors and
providing shelter and protection from scorching summer heat. Toddy was
another delicacy that used to be relished early morning. The coconut forms
important ingredient of most Goa cuisine and popular sweets. The leaves no
longer serve as shelter to homes .Feni which has been granted the
geographical status originates from product of the tree, but unfortunately
the breed of toddy tappers are in short supply , in spite of host of
incentives besides insurance cover. Every part of the tree, besides the
fruit has permeated the life of the community in Goa in the past
Unfortunately when Govt. acquires land the valuation is most paultry
compensation. In fact is the cheapest fruit form amongst many others. It is
only a matter of time, when imports will be necessiated to the discomfiture
of dependent users

It is not clear as to why this nomenclature ,suddenly surfaced at this
juncture. It is believed that licence to a brewery in Sanguem is infested
with 1500, which will be a, requiem for productive coconut trees. The
permission to cut trees is cumbersome process, requiring clearance from
police, and agriculture dept and mandatory conditions to plant new trees
as per the order .This nomenclature will selectively favour the builders
to convert orchards without any such restrictions

Some affected individuals thought it as a relief to their woes, Many a
times trees in the past were grown to mark the boundaries. The trees abut
into the neighbiours property causing imminent danger to life and property
,The authorities depend on the report of police and ZAO to obtain relief
and many times it is an obstructive negative, legal process. A legislation
to give individuals relief from trees abutting in others compound would
be most desirable and with respect to any tree, coconut tree being the
most common problem

This supersedes AIC 12/2008 dated 6-10-2008.

Some observations:
Indian Passport holders abroad can now also travel by Charter flights by
availing inclusive tour package (ITP) which includes round trip, tours,
accommodation etc

No ‘flight only’ ticket/travel by any tourists (Foreign/Indian).
However, we saw in the past some Charter airlines offering this FO where they
also show basic accommodation like dormitory house etc

No ‘One Way’ ticket. However, the charter airline are allowed O/W passengers
on its first flight inbound and last flight outbound where the airline has
series of at least 4 flights (to Goa..) or at least 8 flights (to Metro Cities
in India)
Also, check this clause: 4.1 (x)

Quote
Tourists availing ITP charter flights would not be permitted to fly on inward
or outward journeys using a scheduled airline. However, in case of any
emergency, DGCA may permit tourists arriving on a charter flight to depart from
India on scheduled flights.
Request for such permission would be submitted by the concerned Indian tour
operator.
