[Goanet] PANAJI MANDAL VICE PRESIDENT SANTOSH AKHADKAR RESIGNS FROM BJP

2016-02-29 Thread Aires Rodrigues
Santosh Akhadkar today tendered his resignation from the post of Vice
President of the Panaji BJP Mandal as well as the primary membership of the
party. Santosh Akhadkar is contesting the Corporation of City of Panaji
polls from Ward No 30 at Ribandar

Addressing a press conference in the city Santosh Akhadkar stated that he
had resigned from the party as he was now convinced that sincere and
committed workers like him have no future in the BJP.

Santosh Akhadkar has sent a copy of his resignation letter to BJP National
President Amit Shah, BJP State President Vinay Tendulkar, Defence Minister
Manohar Parrikar and Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar

Santosh Akhadkar in his resignation letter expressed surprise that despite
his dedicated and loyal service to the party for so many years he was very
high-handedly overlooked for the candidature to Ward No 30 in the current
Corporation of City of Panaji polls though he was given a clear assurance
by the party that he should prepare to contest for these CCP polls.

Santosh Akhadkar in his resignation letter has further stated that it was
sad to see that honest and loyal workers of the party were being sidelined
and that this does not bode well for the BJP which claims to be a Party
with a difference.

The people of Ribandar are gearing up to reject the family raj sought to be
foisted by the BJP in fielding Rupesh Halarnkar and his wife from the two
Ribandar Wards. Rupesh Harlankar is contesting on a fraudulently procured
OBC caste certificate which is currently under the scanner of the Scrutiny
Committee.

A United Ribandar should elect Santosh Akhadkar from Ward No 30 and Vandana
Amonkar from Ward No 29.

In the last two days, HRD Minister Smriti Irani, the youngest face of PM
Narendra Modi's cabinet, has given two speeches in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya
Sabha respectively. Both speeches have been lauded for their emotional value
and eloquence with Irani quoting generously from sources including Macbeth and
Roman philosopher Cicero. As I write this, Parliament proceedings have been
held hostage by a fight over Smriti Irani's display of nude pictures of a
Goddess allegedly published by students of JNU.

The debate over the last two days which started off with a discussion over
Rohit Vemula's suicide and the JNU controversy sought serious answers from the
HRD minister, but turned into a shallow display of victimhood and misplaced
sexism. Not just did the minister holding one of the highest offices of the
Indian government mislead the parliament with incorrect facts, but she also
reduced the HRD, once helmed by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, to an all-time low.

A sample of the few misplaced arguments and statements placed by Irani in both
the houses are stated below. Armed with brilliant dialogue delivery skills (and
I am not alluding to her acting career), Irani, like her senior Sushma Swaraj,
has emerged as a superb orator from her party. However, nothing that Irani has
said so far has answered any of the questions raised by Vemula's suicide, or
dealt with the allegations of the minister taking her orders from the RSS.

"Main aapse se kehti hun agar mere jawab se aap santusht nahi ho, toh iss sabha
main kehti hun Mayawati ji, main BSP ke ek-ek karyakarta aur aapke netaon se
kehti hun, sar kalam karke aapke charnon mein chhod denge." (Answering Mayawati
on Rohith Vemula - "If you are not satisfied with my reply, I will cut my head
and offer it at your feet.")

"Apne kartavya ka paalan karne ke liye aap mujhe suli par chadha rahe the,
Amethi ladne ki ye saza denge aap mujhe." (To the Congress - "Are you exacting
revenge for my contesting the election from Amethi?")

"Mera naam Smriti Irani hai, meri jaat par aarop lagakar dekhiye." (In defence
of her ministry in the case of Rohit Vemula's suicide - "I am Smriti Irani. I
challenge you to question my caste.")

"What a lovely conversation to have with a lady, bravo, nature's call." (This
is what she said when Sitaram Yechury said he had to excuse himself to answer
nature's call).

If these comments have baffled you, more confusing were the anomalies placed by
the minister in the House:

"Nobody allowed a doctor near this child, to revive this child, to take him to
the hospital. Nobody allowed a doctor near him. The police has reported that
not one attempt was made to take him to a doctor. Instead what was done was
that his body was used as a political tool," said Irani on Rohith Vemula not
being rushed to the hospital after he was found hanging in his hostel room.

Rajasree Malpath, Chief Medical Officer of the University of Hyderabad's health
centre, toldThe
Telegraph,
"I reached the room where Vemula was found within five minutes of receiving an
alert (around 7:30 pm on January 17). His body was beyond revival. The body was
cold, stiff and rigid, with signs of rigor mortis (a stiffening of the muscles
and limbs in the body that begins about two hours after death)... I examined
the body for 10 minutes and declared him dead."

Irani then flayed the JNU students for their celebrations of Mahishasur - the
black demon who was slayed by Durga - a destruction referred to by the students
as an upper caste and racist practice. The dramatic twist continued when Smriti
shifted to Bengali to ask if parliamentarians and others would tolerate this
practice in West Bengal.

Of course, no one must have mentioned to her that a Dalit member and MP from
her own party, Udit Raj, had attended the celebration of Mahishasur in 2013, a
fact tweeted by him where he also mentioned that no blasphemous speech was made.

https://twitter.com/Dr_Uditraj/status/703161059339677700?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw

Irani also lashed out at charges of communalizing the HRD but with flawed
arguments. She used tried and tested tokenism and spoke of a Kashmiri Muslim
student who was given a fellowship as an example of her ministry's secular
approach, but in the proce

Dear Bombay Catholic Sabha,

The Global Catholic Climate Movement community is saddened by the news we are
receiving from some of our members on the ground in Fiji. Cyclone Winston, the
most powerful storm to hit Fiji in recorded history, has devastated the small
island nation. The cyclone took over 40 lives and has left tens of thousands
of people homeless.

Here's a quote from a report we received from Columban Missionary Fr. John
McEvoy:
"It was a category 5 cyclone - never before experienced in Fiji and the
strongest recorded winds in the Southern Hemisphere. The nation is numb,
shell-shocked and overwhelmed, so are we. The situation has emotionally
affected us all and like the nation we are somewhat paralyzed, crying within
and unable to get up and move into action."

The country of Fiji will join the Lenten Fast for Climate
Justice
on March 5th, however, with this storm and the damage it has caused, we are
sure they will be fasting many more days leading up to that. We call on our
members and supporters to join in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in
Fiji, and fast on March 5 in addition to your given country date.

Join
#FastWithFiji

We also invite you to send a message of solidarity to the people of Fiji. GCCM
members in Fiji, Columban missionaries, will share your message with local
communities on March 5 during their weekend masses. You can send your message
through the #FastWithFiji
form.

Here is quote by another Columban missionary in Fiji, Fr. Donald McIlraith:
"...the village catechist, and his wife, have nothing left except the clothes
they wear. How do you rebuild a whole village? But they will."

Pope Francis in his encyclical Laudato Si' reminds us that, "large-scale
natural disasters... cannot be analyzed or explained in isolation." The
tragedy in Fiji reminds us of the human impacts of the climate crisis and our
role in seeking reconciliation with all of creation.

Lenten Season is a time for seeking wholeness and healing within ourselves and
in the world.

GCCM and our members the Columban Missionaries thank the global community of
people who send their solidarity with Fiji and all of God's Creation.

In Christ's mercy and peace,

The GCCM team and the Columban Missionaries in Fiji

Parrikar rejects suggestion to shift DefExpo to Mopa
Says that suggestions for DefExpo could be taken up next financial year

MARGAO: Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar has rejected the suggestion to shift
the Defence Expo to Mopa.

On Sunday, Parrikar and other political leaders visited Navelim MLA Avertano
Furtado’s residence as it was the latter’s birthday and then proceeded to the
foundation stone ceremony for the renovation of the Shani Dev Temple in
Mandopa, Navelim.

Reiterating that it was for the State government to deal with the opposition to
the DefExpo, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar brushed aside the demands made
by GVP and NCP for it to be shifted to Mopa. He said that suggestions for the
DefExpo could be taken up in the next financial year and it would be wise for
those opposing it to send their suggestions after the DefExpo was over.

His tone indicated that the opposition would subside after the opponents saw
the Defence Expo and how it brought development to the State and the economy.
He pointed out that all hotels had already been booked, providing a boost to
the local tourism.

Meanwhile, Orixtt Porjecho Awaz (OPA), which has been at the forefront of the
DefExpo protests, has decided to hold its public meeting in Naqueri on March 6
at 3.30 pm after the government allegedly hampered its original plan to hold
the meet on Sunday. OPA and United Goans Foundation (UGF) have also slammed
Defence Minister Parrikar for his statements on the DefExpo issue.

Responding to Parrikar’s statements at a press briefing on Sunday, OPA pointed
out that if he knew the people of Goa very well, he would have taken them,
especially the locals of Naqueri-Quitol, into confidence first.

Reacting to the charge that only certain sections were opposing the project,
UGF president Aashish Kamat said it was not the case and cited how the
government was forcing an airport in the North and the DefExpo in the South
against the wishes of the public and without disseminating information to the
people.

“No, we are not ignorant, but you definitely are ignorant thinking that Goans
are naïve and shall get taken in by your pipedream of development. And yes,
protection of Goan lands from people like you who sell Goa to anybody and
everybody is our vested interest,” said Kamat.

wears a slick black jacket, the sleeves of his crisp white shirt revealing the
glint of dark cuff links. His fingers clasp a gleaming tenor saxophone with a
lover’s gentleness. Arms crossed coquettishly above her waist, Lorna Cordeiro
is chic in a bouffant and a form-fitting gown that shows a flash of ankle. They
stare into each other’s eyes, mesmerised. Behind them looms a giant camera
aperture borrowed from the opening sequence of the Bond films. You couldn’t miss
the poster as you sauntered down Jamshetji Tata Road in downtown Bombay. It
hung outside the Astoria Hotel, across the street from the octagonal Art Deco
turret of Eros cinema, inviting the city to Chris and Lorna’s daily shows at
the Venice nightclub. It was 1971. India was savouring its newfound place on
the world’s stage. The country’s armed forces had decisively liberated
Bangladesh and the idealism of Independence had welled up again. India’s middle
classes were capturing their polyester memories on Agfa Click IIIs that cost
46.50 rupees (taxes extra), aspiring to the lifestyles of “The Jet Set Air
Hostesses” described in The Illustrated Weekly of India (price: 85 paise), and
being encouraged by newspaper ads to “Go gay with Gaylord fine filter
cigarettes”.As the City of Gold bubbled through its jazz age, Lorna and Chris
enthralled Bombay with their shows at Venice each night. Remo Fernandes, who
would go on to become the first Indian pop musician to record an album of
original English-language tunes, was among those locked in the spell. “Two
artists sometimes ignite a creative chemistry in each other which goes beyond
all logical explanation. Mere mortals can only look and listen in awe,” he
rhapsodised. “In such duos, one plus one does not make two. It makes a number
so immeasurable, it defies all laws of calculus.”But the sparks that flew at
Venice gradually built into a roaring conflagration. As Remo put it:
“Hyper-intense, high-temperament artistic relationships often end in emotional
disaster, like two comets when they steer too dangerously close. Chris’s and
Lorna’s, as we all know, was no exception.”Like the myths about the city in
which they soared to fame, the tale of Chris and Lorna has gained so much in
the re-telling it’s sometimes difficult to thresh the apocrypha from the
actual. Thirty years after the two stopped performing together, old-time
musicians in the bylanes of Dhobi Talao and Bandra still beg anonymity as they
reminisce in sad whispers.“He was shameless. He left his wife and three small
children for that girl.”“Chris and Lorna were in love. When they fought, they
became mortal enemies. He destroyed her and he destroyed himself.” “Chris and
Lorna were in love…He destroyed her and he destroyed himself.” “She was very
good singer. Beyond that, she was nothing. She got her break with Chris Perry.
He made contract with her. She couldn’t sing without his permission. She had no
brains, so she signed. Then he went back to his wife.”“He didn’t let her
perform with anyone else. He threatened to break the legs of one Hindu fellow
who tried to get her to sing with him.”“She hit the bottle, men. She became an
alcoholic and just disappeared.”Chris Perry, who was born Pereira, died on
January 25, 2002, his last years hobbled by Parkinson’s disease. Lorna has
refused to recount her version of events for publication. But the fidelity of
her contralto booming out of our speakers, embroidered with Chris’s perfectly
crafted sax filigrees, speaks its own truth.* * *Dave Brubeck in Bombay.Ronnie

the jazzman’s jazz haunt, the rendezvous for musicians from around the country
and occasionally from around the world. Dave Brubeck swung by when he visited
Bombay in 1958, as Duke Ellington had when his band set out on their famous
world tour of 1963. As Ronnie tells it, the dapper Chris Perry was the
musician’s musician: “He had perfect pitch. He was an arranger, a composer, a
player.” Chris played both trumpet and saxophone, sometimes switching from one
to the other mid-tune, a feat that required elaborate lip control. His trumpet
tone was broad and true. He didn’t have flashy technique, but the notes he
coaxed out of his horn had a mellowness that kept the fans coming back night
after night.Chris was 43 at the time, Lorna was 25. No one seems quite sure
exactly how they met, but everyone’s agreed that he groomed her into one of the
Bombay’s finest crooners. One version maintains that Lorna got her break when

Many shades of nationalism

By Eugene Correia | 29 Feb, 2016, 05:51AM IST

India is among the few nations that often makes news in global media for
events that are either based on communalism, caste, regionalism and
political chauvinism. Once in a way, the issue of nationalism crops up and
haunt - and hurt - the heart and soul of India. Currently, India is wrapped
in a crisis that one would not want it to endure. No doubt, I live
thousands of miles from India, yet the tribulations caused by the recent
controversy causes heart-burning as well as nostalgic feelings of the India
I was born, educated and grew up to be an adult.
It’s not easy to understand the raucous over what is nationalism and what
is anti-nationalism, and how one draws a distinguishing line in the light
of what happened at the Jawaharlal Nehru University. I have tried to follow
it in the media, U-Tube videos and websites that are on both sides of the
debate. But someone who too had been labeled as anti-national for my
writing, part of my job as a professional journalist, many years ago I feel
that it’s a sticky label one peels off the Avery sheets and sticks to those
the authorities are uncomfortable with or to deflect any sort of criticism.
I only did my job to write that the ex-consul general of India in Toronto,
Chandra Mohan Bandari, had broken the protocol of his office and dignity by
going for an art exhibition, organized by Sahmat, which was aligned with
the theatre artiste Safdar Hashmi, who was killed by Congress (I)

a famous Toronto lakeside venue where the exhibition was hosted. A whisper
campaign was started that I am anti-national. However, some friends and
well-wishers in the community informed the rabble-rousers that my dad had
worked for the Indian Navy and I come from a family that was against
Portuguese rule in Goa. We were, in order words, a “nationalist” family,
and I remember going to Goa with my mum and other siblings, frightened when
we crossed the border. Bhandari, was alleged to be a BJP man, and often
invoked the philosophy of Sanatan Dharma in his public speeches.
In the heat of the current turmoil, reasoning and fair-mindedness has taken
a toll. It has involved numerous individuals, ranging from ex-supreme court
judges, to eminent lawyers, well-known journalists and public intellectuals
of all hues, to weigh on this issue that has caused ripples throughout
India.
In a way, I believe India is diving into the pool of fascism. The victory
of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was a warning, and with Modi as prime
minister the ghost of Gujarat riots and his high-handedness in tackling
that episode engaged the minds of Indians who didn’t support the BJP. True,
the disenchantment with Congress rule had set in and the electorate wanted
a breath of fresh air, though the BJP had their innings in Delhi under Atal
Bihari Vajpayee. However, as events unfold, the reign of Vajpayee appeared
benign compared so far to Modi’s strong-arm tactics.
The domestic front is fractured, and the JNU affair has divided the country
into those for BJP and those against it. While Modi is winning laurels for
his globe-trotting endeavours to win friends and influence leaders across
the world and drawing both good press and crowds, he’s on sticky ground in
his own country. Is it any wonder that the result of the BJP’s sway over
the country has come unstuck with Bihar falling away in the assembly
election after showing excellent performance in the parliamentary
elections. It’s said that when power goes to the head, the head spins.
Power also brought arrogance to the fore, and Bihar is a stark lesson where
arrogance and ambition clashed and brought about BJP’s downfall.
Now, the centre is shaky, almost looking fragile. However, nothing will
happen till the next general elections. Till then, the BJP can make merry
and dance around issues in their own way. There’s a mocking silence on the
part of Modi, a man leading the party that laughed at Manmohan Singh as
India’s mute prime minister. The right-wing faction in the BJP had also
said that Vajpayee was just a “mask” of the BJP. Now, its true colours are
showing, and they aren’t pleasing. For all his work, sincerity and
humanness, as he was a poet who wrote from his heart, Vajpayee was of a
different stock than Modi and his band of ministers and loyalists. Mind
you, Vajpayee was restrained by power-brokers within the party when he
sought to pull Modi over the coals for his role in the Gujarat massacre.
What happened in Delhi over the past few weeks has saddened me and worried
me no end. Never thought that the police would be allowed into an
university campus to quell the voices of protests by the students. No doubt
the media reports are conflicting and it isn’t easy to deduce who’s right
and who’s wrong. But one thing is clear that the issue shouldn’t have been
allowed to rise to such a level that the whole state apparatus, fr
