[Goanet] height of defiance

2016-08-25 Thread Nelson Lopes
HEIGHT OF DEFIANCE
The S.C ruled that human periods or Dahi Handi should not exceed 20 feet
and youngster below 18 years should not participate One is bound to obey
the order of the highest court and not defy it in contempt, but should take
recourse to legal procedure to challenge it. The NCP. MNS have gone on
record that it is a religious custom spread of hundreds of years mostly in
the state of Maharashtra and the sentiments , customs, traditions of the
people should be respected . Will the rule of courts define every activity
of the people. The Dahi Handi pyramids exceeded 40 ft. double the limit set
by the S.C and is gross defiance of the order of the highest court of the
land. It is not clear as to who went to the S,C, or whether it is a suo muto
decision, showing concerns for safety and welfare of the participants. Have
the parents of the vulnerable youngsters complained about the safety of
their wards and held the organizers responsible for the casualties in the
past ? How many casualties have been reported so far.? Have the organizers
turned a blind eye to any of such tragic incidents in the past by refusing
to attend to those caught in severe accidents of fall with broken limbs, or
partial paralysis?. The organizers ,mostly politicians organize, promote,
patronize such events with an eye to cash on popular sentiments as future
investments in votes., The way the protesters wore printed attire, black
flags demonstrations, shows that money has gone into making this event a
defiance of S.C. order attempting to regulate the heights with reasonable
restrictions of safety standards. The arguments that all sports,a part
from highly risky, adventure sports are not free from freak accidents in
spite of all precautionary measures. Is Dahi Handi a sport, entertainment
with a label of religious tradition or custom in which S.C court could have
abstained is another matter. One wonders what steps will be taken against
the organizers by the law enforcing agencies showing defiance and contempt
for S.C directives .Respect for the law is highest duty of the citizens,
even if they disagree

*Imagine,* the fortnightly film club hosted by Apurva Kulkarni at *Gallery
Gitanjali* in Fontainhas, Panjim invites you to the screening of *Supermen
of Malegaon* on *Friday, 26th August at 6 pm. *

Filmmaker Faiza Ahmad Khan offers a behind-the-scenes look at the making of
a threadbare adventure story for the Muslim community in the Indian city of
Maelgaon in this documentary. Wedding photographer and aspiring filmmaker
Shaikh Nasir has been given a small budget to shoot a local remake of
Superman, but lack of money and experience aren't the only things that set
this version apart from the original. In this case, Superman is skinny as a
rail (the producers imagine he'd be ill after breathing so much pollution
while flying through the air), the director attempts to throw in as many
explosions as possible and shooting comes to a standstill when the
production's only camera is dropped in a river. But Nasir and his ragtag
crew set out to entertain, and for better or worse that's just what they
do.

[Goanet] WHY DID CHIEF MINISTER LAXMIKANT PARSEKAR LIE?

2016-08-25 Thread Aires Rodrigues
It is now ten long days that Goa’s Deputy Speaker Vishnu Wagh was
hospitalized and has been in a state of Coma. On 15th August he was
admitted to the Goa Medical College and being brain dead was on 18th August
airlifted to Hinduja hospital in Mumbai.

Vishnu Wagh being a public figure the government should have been very open
and truthful about his state of health. Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar
needs to explain to the people of Goa as to why he knowingly misled us all
by falsely stating that Vishnu Wagh’s health condition was stable, when
infact it was very much to the contrary. Why did the Chief Minister have to
so blatantly lie? Does he not know that the sun, the moon, and the truth
cannot be long hidden?

Vishnu Wagh’s health prognosis may be gloomy but let us continue praying
for our multi talented and ever so versatile Vishnu Wagh. A poet, writer,
dramatist, journalist and artist par excellence. May there be a miracle for
the sake of Goa.

jc Comment:

I am perplexed here. Do patients in Goa have a Right to Medical
Confidentiality? IF so, HOW on earth do we have Aires Rodrigues making all
these statements about the health of patients admitted to GMC?

I understand why Aires states that the 'health prognosis' of a 'brain dead'
person 'MAY be gloomy' . He is obviously clueless about ''medical matters'
- unless English is a difficult language.

Now to the matter of Mr. Parsekar's "LIE" !

My questions are (a) What is a LIE? (b) What is the meaning of the term
"Stable"? - especially when spoken by a politician? (c) Did / Does Mr.
Parsekar have the Right to violate Mr. Wagh's Right to Patient
Confidentiality ? or Is there some Exclusion clause which applies to
politicians?

Re: [Goanet] FOOD FOR THE SOUL - Voice in the Desert

2016-08-25 Thread Roland
I have been following quite a few of these sermons not for the content but for
the catchy Mangalorean Konkani, theatrics and props of televangelist Fr. Jerry
Sequeira.

I am sure Devak Argham is aware that this priest was involved in an illicit
relationship with a woman in Andhra Pradesh, first denying and then reluctantly
admitting to it when the woman did not seem to be letting go of her accusations.

I don't blame Fr. Jerry. Blame if any should fully rest on the celibate
doctrine of the Catholic Church. If he should be faulted, it should be not for
what he did but for glibly continuing with his "retreat sermons" and not
quietly marrying the woman, leaving the priesthood and continuing with his life
as most other priests specially Jesuits in his position have done over the
years.

He has instead rested on another fallacious doctrine which says that once you
are a priest, you are always a priest and therefore free to continue with those
duties even against the dictates of superiors.

What set off this chain of thought are the beginning lines of this sermon where
a man is supposed to have said to one of JS's female followers "why are you
running after Fr. Jerry, which he turns into the Lord saying He would bless
anyone who followed those who followed Him, or words to that effect. And Fr.
Jerry follows the Lord it seems.

Neat huh? The things that are done in the name of religion!

*Exploring Goa's Musical Tradition A film by Ruth Lobo*

*Produced by National Institute of Design (under the Ford Foundation
   Grant)*

Music has always been the keeper of tradition. The history, struggles
and triumphs of a community are forever preserved in their music. The
things, about which one could not speak of, one, could sing, for that is
   the nature of music.

With colonization and the subsequent introduction of western music in
Goa, a new genre evolved, sung in the mother tongue – Konkani. It was a
blend of Indian and western musical traditions. The Mando and Dulpod and
the smaller category of Dekhni henceforth came to identify a community. It
became a distillation almost, of the dichotomous lifestyle of the Goan. A
deeper look into the joyful and sometimes wistful tunes reveals a glimpse
into the complexity of the Goan identity and way of life. The film tries to
present the beauty of the music and explores the stories behind these
   eternal compositions.

Duration of the Film: 51 minutes

   About Ruth Lobo
Ruth Lobo is a documentary filmmaker and editor based in Mumbai. She
graduated from the St. Xavier’s College with a B.A. in History after which
she ventured into the world of filmmaking. At the Surabhi Foundation, she
worked as an assistant on several feature length documentary films for the
National Geographic Channel Network. She quit work to attend the National
Institute of Design where she completed her masters in Film and Video
Communication. Aamchem Cantar is her graduating film.

*Ruth will be present at the screening for a short introduction to the
film and to partake in any discussions.*

Dear Vivian,

Thank you for your response to the Friday Balcao topic
of Suicide Prevention. As you rightly said there is a need for
a Suicide Helpline in Goa. The COOJ Mental Health Foundation
website www.cooj.co.in operates a HELPLINE for limited hours
5 days a week and the Tel No. is 2252525 (Monday to Friday 3pm to 7pm).
It does need more publicity and support as well and we will be discussing
this at the Balcao.

Will share your post at the Friday Balcao on 26th August

best wishes

In my lifetime I have seen several men who have given up their lives.? In
my case, it was always men.? Till this day,I am haunted by the memory of a
dear friend, who ended his life by jumping from the terrace of the building
he lived in, a scant 5 minutes after we had spoken on the telephone.? I
recall the last conversation.? He seemed to be in a hurry and wanted to end
our conversation.? It bothered me at the time.I still ask myself if somehow
I had failed him.? I wonder what leads a person to take this ultimate
step.Clearly, a person who takes this final step is deeply disturbed and
wants to end it all.We need a suicide prevention life line, telephone
number manned by trained volunteers to help talk people out of considering
suicide.? I don't know if this exists in Goa.? If it does, it needs to be
given more publicity, to help those who feel that life is not worth
living. When a person gives up their life, they may have solved their
problem, but the trauma scars their near and
dear ones for ever.? it has been over 40 years since I lost my dear
friend, but the memory is so vivid, and the grief unabated.? And I still
ask myself what I could have done to prevent it.? There will never be an
answer.Roland,? thank you for taking up this very important subject.? Being
in the USA at the moment, I will not be able to attend, but I will be with
you in spirit. With my best wishes.? Vivian

OSI Card is required for contribution and to track comments. A Goan
State Government style manually typed Monsoon Report is sent to Mark
Zuckerberg annually via India Post (insured).

'Little known to the team,' Zuckerberg was recently overheard saying,
'the Corporate Development has been closely monitoring the conversation
muck and has taken the decision that Goa will not be ripe for investment
for the next 1000 years... Especially the Catholic parts.'

All kidding aside,

Happy Birthday GoaNet. Happy 22nd birthday.

A special thank you to all the volunteers, the contributors, and yes
even you spammers who are scraping the site stealing my e-mail address
and sending notices about the Russian Ladies.
