[Goanet] Sir, Your Manners, Please!

2016-10-26 Thread Joao Barros-Pereira
Are we Indians an unhappy people, full of repressed anger? Forgive me for
thinking so, but unfortunately this is my impression.

Having returned from Japan where I've been working for decades I'm hungry
for news and views on a lot of issues. I often talk to people from a
cross-section of society and also watch panel discussions where
unfortunately angry voices are engaged in a shouting match on an Olympian
scale. Is the person who shouts the loudest the hero or heroine and the
winner? It is a sad situation indeed. I suggest a national shouting contest
be started on TV so someone can be crowned officially Mr or Ms Shoutest.

Fortunately for us soft-spoken people, a lot of Indians do not subscribe to
this philosophy. Strangely enough, I have seen moderators shout the loudest
on TV and refuse to allow panelists the right to complete what they want to
say. And, of course, the moderators butt in all the time. Is this
democracy? Do we have to educate our moderators?

Looking back we oldies can recall how eloquent our post-Independence Indian
panelists were for two generations. Gradually, we saw a decline in levels
of politeness and respect for people whose opinions were different and
today we are at an all-time low. Often the content is appalling. No point
in boasting of our ancient culture and achievements for nowadays Indian TV
panel discussions are an embarrassment on the global stage.

When the great philosopher and debater Adi Shankara was defeated by a
surdra he gracefully accepted his defeat and walked away silently. If he
were alive today and debating on TV we probably would not be able to hear
what he has to say! Our loud-mouthed panelists would shout him out of
existence. Isn't it frightening?

Watching panel discussions on the BBC and other foreign channels makes me
even more depressed. Why can't we also speak with dignity and stop trying
to outshout one another? Isn't there a huge cultural gap between the
culture of foreign panel discussions and our own?

Why do we continue in this ill-mannered way more than half a century after
Independence?

[Goanet] WILL AAP WIN BENAULIM SEAT?

2016-10-26 Thread Stephen Dias
Dear AAP Convenor
Elvis Gomes

Please read this statement coming from Arwin Mesquita in Niz Goenkar today
and appears to be important to make a study so that AAP wins this seat or
else it will go to some other candidate. My friend social activist Judith
Almeida informs me over the phone day before yesterday about this
candidate Royla Fernandes who appears to be tainted and I trust Judith
telling me all the facts.
Anyway this is for the High Command of AAP to decide.

Fair Queries To AAP Benaulim Candidate Royla Fernandes For Benaulim – by
Arwin Mesquita
Saturday - Oct 22, 2016
[image: Fair Queries To AAP Benaulim Candidate Royla Fernandes For Benaulim
– by Arwin Mesquita]
For me Goa is first and with this clear, I questioned/criticized:
1) Corrupt/Destructive Congress tenure (Got some threats/abuses.)

2) Current Corrupt/Destructive BJP policies( Got threats, a lot more
abuses, personal attacks on my religion, name, called anti national,
Portuguese/leftover etc. - so the winner so far: BJP supporters)

I will challenge/query any party or politician for betterment of #GOA.

My position is to support right people now rather than parties and recently
I asked to support some AAP candidates but that does not mean I will
support all AAP Candidates if I find anything shady. Same principle applies
to other parties. So now Royla (AAP Benaulim Candidate)

I have been aware that the Benaulim Panchayats have generally been a
corrupt builder friendly body. And we can see this in Benaulim today in its
sorry worsening state! And we have to query fairly all potential Benaulim
candidates including Royla. Last thing we want is planned propaganda to rid
of one Horrible politician so that we can get allow vested interests to
hijack the movement and get another horrible one e.g. Caitu now!

So with Jose Rodrigues permission I am sharing his valid queries and
request Royla Fernandes to please respond/clarify. Jose is a well know
activist in Benaulim. HAPPY BIRTHDAY AND AAP BENAULIM CANDIDATE
NON-GOAN NOT DESTROYING OUR LOVING VILLAGES WITHOUT YOUR
BLESSINGS.

I am not against your statement on previous MLAs but all those illegal
projects was stopped and in abeyance due to major illegalities and against
Gram Sabah Resolutions are carried out at your tenure.

1) Petrol pump in cultivable zone and against the wishes and opposed by
surrounding local farmers and same was revoked at Previous panchayat body.
(Also blessing of present AAP candidate as sarpanch)

2) Illegal structures in CRZ area without obtaining single permission from
GCZMA and concern authorities accept blessing of you and your corrupt
panchayat but BENAULIM Civic & Social forum stand against destruction with
Great vision.

3) Your builder filled the 3 metres traditional storm water stream and
carried out illegal building for commercial purpose against the high court
order and high court's direction, Order Dated 13/08/2013 .( present
AAP candidate's and former sarpanch tenure).

4) Proposed Garbage treatment plant in paddy fields and prohibited area and
against Goa state pollution control board's own guide lines ,only to
support and create more buildings within this jurisdiction (Present AAP
candidate's and her sarpanch tenure)

5) Poor fisher flocks had been stopped the illegal project due to
illegalities since 2007 at your backyard and same was illegally carried out
recently at your tenure, how? Also harassed the poor fisher flocks recently
by your corrupt panchayat and without your blessings?

I had never seen gundaism ever before than last four and half year at Gram
Sabah at your tenure. You had never ever help taxi drivers at your MLA
tenure but may be before MLA. You had harassed hotels in 2012 and said that
hotel people not elected you but common people but today many illegal
projects carried out with the blessing of you, etc. etc.

Dear Arwin, Write your suggestions and solutions direct to the Benaulim
Manifesto Team. They will include your suggestions and solutions in the
Benaulim Manifesto. There are 41 Manifestos. 40 for each constituencies and
1 for Goa State. You can join AAP Manifesto Team and implement your
Manifesto in Benaulim Constituency. AAP is your party, you make it and you
implement it.

[Goanet] St Francis Xavier 2016 (Patron Saint of Goa)Response by Melvyn Fernandes to Fredrick Noronha

2016-10-26 Thread Melvyn Fernandes

Melvyn, why do I feel that you're going to get flamed for calling SFX the
patron saint of Goa? Does Goencho Saib = patron saint? And, we're living in
nationalistic times (here at least). FN

On 24 October 2016 at 21:40, Melvyn Fernandes wrote:

Hi  Fredrick
A difficult question to answer. May I recall a debate initiated in Canada  some
years ago that St Katherine is the patron Saint of Goa and the conclusion was
that St Francis Xavier was the most popular and the one people of my generation
born in the 1950s can identify with.
I can also recall at the conception of   Gannet there was an email listing of
every church in Goa. This was a sparkle of an idea that could have developed
and attracted our people worldwide to connect with and develop their villages
through administrative arrangements handled by the local Parish in partnership
with the Local community and Sarpanch.
There has never been a response to my simple letters to Bishops House at
Altinho Panjim. Would this be lack of good  office practice , initiative or
lack of direction  direction from the Bishop apart from passing directives from
Rome.   Attitude problems I presume do not blame Indian mentality or Portuguese
timekeeping. Even in my opinion the Pope is awaiting an official invite to GOA
State.
I am aware Goa people in  2016  live  Nationalistic times. An undated Letter
from Saint Francis Xavier to Father Master Ignatius of Loyola
Quote
Thus, what with the excessive heat which I speak of, and what with the almost
continual voyages of the Portuguese, Lent is disregarded and few persons
observe the law of fasting.   The Governor has charged me to lay all these
facts carefully before you, and to get of you in the name of God, that if such
a thing be possible, you will get the Pope to change the time of Lent in these
parts to the months of June and July, at which time of year the heat begins to
relent, and there is much less navigation, on account of the roughness of the
sea.   So the milder temperature would make it easy for most people to fast,
and the return of Lent at that time would be a sort of reminder, and they would
then easily obey the precepts of the Church as to confession and communion.
This measure is one which seems of the greatest importance for the service of
God, unless you see any objection to it.   The Governor entreats you earnestly
not to let anything that can be done in this matter be left attempted through
any want of exertion on the part of his advocate.   You will be rewarded for
your trouble by the gratitude of all the inhabitants of these countries, and
you will share in the fruits of the divine worship and the merits which will be
acquired in consequence of all those graces.
Unquote
An an example in recent times is the  August celebration of World Goa Day  this
is celebrated in different parts of the world in any other month than August
weather and Venue  permitting.
One can only hope and pray that in 2016 my request for people to get together
and participate in celebrating the Feast of Saint Francis Xavier  singing from
the same hym sheet  with their local organisers around the world  will not get
burnt with the flames of sub conscious Jealousy, fighting  etc that has been
proven to be embedded in our DNA.
Best Regards
Melvyn Fernandes
