[Goanet] Lecture: Against the Odds - Indian science and science journalism
T.V. Padma: Against the Odds - Indian science and science journalism https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JChwqjUl3aY Published on May 29, 2017 Public talk at the HITS Colloquium, May 10, 2017, Studio Villa Bosch, Heidelberg/Germany. T.V. Padma, a science journalist based in Delhi, gives a comprehensive overview on science and science journalism in India, from the dawn of Independence until today. On the one hand, India is recognized for its achievements in science, on the other hand it struggles with third-world problems like high infant death rates or drinking water problems. T.V. Padma refers how science has been and is covered in India. Against the odds, she claims, India´s science is forging ahead, and Indian science journalists try to cope with the infrastructural and organizational challenges and with the communication bottlenecks. Some of their problems are common to science journalists worldwide; others have a more specific context. 2:05 Overview of India and Indian science in the global context 26:50 Overview of media in India 31:46 Science coverage in Indian media 41:47 Challenges 49:25 Signs of hope T.V. Padma has been working for Nature, Nature India, New Scientist, Physics World, BioWorld, and other outlets since 2014. Before, she had worked as a science correspondent at India’s leading news wire agency, Press Trust of India (PTI), and later on served as the first South Asian news editor/regional head of SciDev.Net. https://tvpadma.contently.com/ Since February 2017, T.V. [Goanet] SABAJI SHETYE
I have known Sabaji Shetye for almost two decades and have always found him to be a very humble, upright and helpful officer. So, I was not at all surprised when told by senior officers this evening that Sabaji Shetye was framed by a BJP decoy as political retribution and witch-hunting at the behest of Manohar Parrikar. If this is true it would be an utter shame for the rule of law. The now BJP geared Anti-Corruption Branch and the Crime Branch should stop acting as parrots and display their spine in cracking down on their utterly corrupt current Political Masters. But this government having been dubiously and deviously conceived on the very bedrock of corruption, these Goa's dubious 12 Ministers including the very corrupt Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar have a lot to answer. They have miserably failed to lead as role models. If its Zero Tolerance to Corruption there cannot be pick and choose on which case to pursue and which one to hush up. Joining or even flirting with the BJP has today become the way forward to absolve yourself of your misdeeds. We have seen how the ACB has conveniently slept over the Old Goa land grab case against now BJP Minister Pandurang Madkaikar and more recently the very high-handed manner in which the Crime Branch tried to wrap up the cheating case against another chronic land grabber Dilip Parulekar. Re: [Goanet] Is Comey memo the beginning of the end for Trump?
This is one of those outlets (The New Yorker) that caters to their Left Wing base. If you are a true journalist, you should stay neutral and let the readers decide on the merits of your argument. But sadly, that is not how modern journalism works - they all need big money to survive and thrive. So what do they all do? Either side with the Left or Right. In the US, at least, there is equal chance of making money - either way. Personally speaking, I almost always avoid reading rubbish that asks me a question in the subject line (such as this one) - instead of providing a nicely crafted subject line to attract attention. The only reason I clicked on this is because I wanted to provide a rebuttal to this stupid question. While on the subject, let me say one thing - Trump is not going anywhere. Keep on dreaming sour losers. [Goanet] Subject: Canada starting to say good bye to USA as a world leader...
MD mmdmello at gmail.com wrote Wed Jun 7 03:27:55 PDT 2017 >> I guess Pretty boy Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada has >> Trump's permission to say so? Canada has F. policy in sync. with >> USA and NATO members. More hockey and Budweiser please! MD clearly you did not review the speech, so I've included the text below for you to read. The document is inductive of a fundamental shift of how the world sees the USA. Some Americans have chosen to abandon the very essence and ideals that makes America great. Clearly this is a mix of selfishness, a false sense of pride, and fear. Not to worry. America is a very large, strong, intelligent and resilient country. Wisdom will prevail beyond the quirks of the electoral system. It's easy to wag the tail, difficult to wag the dog. Momentum, however, is lost. International relationships that have taken seven decades to build have been severely shaken. All of this in less that 150 days. When momentum is lost, other pull ahead. Notice there is sadness but no lament from Europe, Mexico, Canada, Europe, Middle East, China, or even the Russians. The tone is, 'Thank you, We are working for a better tomorrow.' BTW, I think you are being taken in but the heavy USA, USA, slam-style advertising hype during ballgames. No one drinks Bud in Canada. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ooOBgqlqrPc And, hats on backwards...I don't think so. Utterly, not Canadian. -- AP === Address by Minister Freeland on Canada’s foreign policy priorities Speech https://www.canada.ca/en/global-affairs/news/2017/06/address_by_ministerfreelandoncanadasforeignpolicypriorities.html Video: Address on Foreign Policy June 6, 2017 http://www.cpac.ca/en/programs/house-of-commons/episodes/51246203/ From Global Affairs Canada June 6, 2017 – Ottawa, Canada Mr. Speaker, Here is a question: Is Canada an essential country, at this time in the life of our planet? Most of us here would agree that it is. But if we assert this, we are called to explain why. And we are called to consider the specifics of what we must do as a consequence. International relationships that had seemed immutable for 70 years are being called into question. From Europe, to Asia, to our own North American home, long-standing pacts that have formed the bedrock of our security and prosperity for generations are being tested. And new shared human imperatives—the fight against climate change first among them—call for renewed, uncommon resolve. Turning aside from our responsibilities is not an option. Instead we must think carefully and deeply about what is happening, and find a way forward. By definition, the path we choose must be one that serves the interests of all Canadians and upholds our broadly held national values; that preserves and nurtures Canadian prosperity and security; and that contributes to our collective goal of a better, safer, more just, more prosperous, and sustainable world. One we can pass onto our children and grandchildren, with a sense of having done the right thing. This is no small order, Mr. Speaker. It is what I would like to spend few minutes talking about today. Since before the end of the Second World War, beginning with the international conference at Bretton Woods in 1944, Canada has been deeply engaged in, and greatly enjoyed the benefits of, a global order based on rules. These were principles and standards that were applied, perhaps not perfectly at all times by all states, but certainly by the vast majority of democratic states, most of the time. The system had at its heart the core notions of territorial integrity, human rights, democracy, respect for the rule of law, and an aspiration to free and friendly trade. The common volition toward this order arose from a fervent determination not to repeat the immediate past. Humankind had learned through the direct experience of horror and hardship, Mr. Speaker, that the narrow pursuit of national self-interest, the law of the jungle, led to nothing but carnage and poverty. Two global conflicts and the Great Depression, all in the span of less than half a century, taught our parents and grandparents that national borders must be inviolate; that international trading relationships created not only prosperity but also peace; and that a true world community, one based on shared aspirations and standards, was not only desirable but essential to our very survival. That deep yearning toward lasting peace led to the creation of international institutions that endure to this day—with the nations of Western Europe, together with their transatlantic allies, the United States and Canada, at their foundation In each of these evolutions in how we humans organize ourselves, Canadians played pivotal roles. There was Bretton Woods itself, where the Canadian delegation was instrumental in drafting provisions of the fledgling International Monetary Fund and Internatio
