[Goanet] Gorakpur massacre of innocent

2017-08-12 Thread Nelson Lopes
Gorakpur massacre of innocent

63 children died in 2 days for lack of Oxygen. Why District Magistrate
files FIR and sacks the Principaland Why oxygen cylinder supplier is
absconding? Who will be made a scape goat in this incident trying to dodge
accountability and responsibility.? There was alarm that liquid oxygen was
low, so also cylinders and hand pumps woefully inadequate for numbers
required. Why no action was taken in time.? Why were there no transfers of
patients well in advance instead of running helter skelter at the last
moment in vain causing deaths in the intervening period? The suppliers
had sent multiple notices to hospital, emails, personal contacts since
February July and Nov.16,. to Director General of Health Secretary ,
Principal Secretary and District Magistrate. They were also warned that
discontinuation of Oxygen can critically endanger life support. Still no
one replied to the notices, Hence they are responsible for criminal
negligence and culpable homicide after knowing the consequences of their
silence. 67 lakhs pending bill had no provision or bribes were demanded by
corrupt as usual? The Govt is now trying to confuse the issue that 2 crores
are transferred electronically on 5 August and hence no cause for
concern. The DM accompanying the CM 3 days earlier was not even briefed of
this situation on hand. The efforts are on to find an alibi, sordid
collective cover up by the very persons who are culpable. If it is not
oxygen then there is a bigger questions and which is much more alarming
and damaging. UP minister is ill qualified to deny the cause of death
without autopsy and medical report or inventory of available oxygen.
Instead larger statistics during previous regime are being branded about
as worst in this Principal Govt hospital. It is believed that Easter UP in
Gorakpur area is endemic with JE and no vaccines are available to control
it as a preventive measure It is an yearly recurring situations that is
taken for granted, exxcept there is public awareness of tragedy thius year.
There is also the problem of fake and adulterated medicines. C.M Yogi
Yadinath has represented this constituency for 20 years and for the first
time this year the health budget is slashed by 3 times . Mathematics of
death is discussed to rationalize massacre of kids. There must be
epidemiological survey why preventive measures are in effective,,
infrastructure, supply, skill labour, and vaccines. An inquiry panel led by
retired High Court Judges assisted by medical experts form far and beyond
can bring out the unbiased truth ,so that such incidents will be avoided
.Death due to asphyxia is due to lack of oxygen, even when the very young
patients were admitted in severe terminal illness .Why are there children
still alive in the hospital not dead due to lack of oxygen is adding salts
to wounds. The people patronizing Govt. health services from poor strata
of the society, who have no voice that counts Hence such deaths are
reduced to statistics and number being called as tragedy and unacceptable
How can the parents be consoled or compensated?.

Easy fix for a PR mechanic, or experienced Company Director,

"I want you to know that there’s a place for you in this industry —
there’s a place for you at Google. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
You belong here and we need you," he told the coding teams who were
being honoured at the Technovation awards ceremony at Google’s campus.

The 12 finalist teams — all made up of young women who developed apps to
solve challenges in their communities — came from Hong Kong, Kazhakstan,
Cambodia, India, Armenia, Kenya, Canada and across the United States.

"I know the journey won’t always be easy," he said, adding he hoped this
was the beginning of long careers in tech for each of them, building

When he said they belonged in tech and "don’t let anyone tell you

Google staffers who were helping host the event.

[Goanet] Notes of a Native Son: Hansda Sowvendra Shekhar

2017-08-12 Thread V M
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/notes-of-a-native-son-hansda-s-shekhar/articleshow/60027329.cms

One of India's best young writers, and good friend of Goa, is fighting
a cultural battle with significant implications for the rest of the
country. On August 4, an irate crowd targeted the brilliant author
Hansda Sowvendra Shekhar in his home city of Pakur, in Jharkhand.
Accusing him of being "the shaitan of Santhal society", they burned an
effigy of the doctor (he works at a government health centre) and
winner of the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar Award. The
purported offence is "pornographic writing" which "showed serious lack
of sensitivity towards the tribal people of India." But what is really
at stake is the question of who has the right to speak for or
represent a culture.

Shekhar is a startling and unique talent. There is literally no one
else like him. Just 34 years old, he writes in an engaging style from
and about a cultural universe otherwise entirely absent from Indian
letters — the tribal firmament in rapidly changing, contemporary
India. It's never fair to burden limitlessly talented young writers
with comparisons, but here it is impossible to ignore deeply resonant
similitude with the African-American pioneer James Baldwin. Notably,
that correlation was first highlighted in Goa, when Shekhar launched
his book of short stories, 'The Adivasi Will Not Dance' at the Goa
Arts and Literature Festival 2015, at the hands of eminent Konkani
writer, Damodar Mauzo.

One of the best stories in that collection is being used to
manufacture outrage against its author. 'November is the Month of
Migrations' is stark and unforgettable, less than four pages
describing the season when "Santhal men, women and children walk down
from their villages in the hills" to board trains to West Bengal,
where "they will plant rice and other crops in farms owned by the
zamindars".

Trailing along is Talamai Kisku, 20, who is beckoned by a railway
police jawan. "Talamai debates if she should follow, and decides to.
He is offering food, after all, and she is hungry." When he asks,
"Will you do some work for me? Talamai knows what work he is talking
about". He uses her, saying "Saali, you Santhal women are made for
this only." But "She just lies — passive, unthinking, unblinking — as
cold as the paved ground...as still as an inert earthen bowl into
which a dark cloud empties itself." Finally, the jawan "gives Talamai
two pieces of cold bread pakora and a fifty-rupee note and walks away.
She re-ties her saya and lungi, stuffs the note into her blouse, eats
both the bread pakoras, and walks back to her group".

It is a masterly feat to condense and communicate such intense pathos
and horror in a few unadorned lines. The scale of Shekhar's
achievement is directly akin to all-time great Sadaat Hasan Manto,
whose shorter-than-short stories remain the most searing evocations of
Partition in 1947. 'November is the Month of Migrations' acutely
recalls 'Khol Do (Open It)', where Manto writes about Sirajuddin,
desperately searching for his abducted daughter, after a nightmare
escape to Lahore. "A succession of images raced through his mind.
Attack... fire... escape... railway station...night...Sakina." He
finds her nigh-unconscious in a hospital. "The doctor looked at the
prostrate body and felt for the pulse. Then he said to the old man,
"Open It" [meaning the nearby window]. The young woman on the
stretcher moved slightly. Her hands groped for the cord which kept her
salwar tied around her waist. With painful slowness, she unfastened
it, pulled the garment down and opened her thighs."

Shekhar's critics aren't bothered about the obvious literary merit of
his work. They are incensed about other things. The author told me via
e-mail, "This is tribal cultural politics. This is the politics of
region, script, identity... a very layered and complicated issue. All
I can say is those who hate my books without even reading them, will
hate them no matter what." But this turf battle is markedly like what
plays out in other parts of India, including Goa. Some Santhals
support the tribal-created Ol-Chiki script, and maintain Sarna (their
animist faith). But converts to Christianity back the Roman script.
Shekhar thoroughly confounds those stereotypes.

But why shouldn't that be the case? Why should a few individuals
determine what is suitably or insufficiently Santhal, or Goan, or
Indian? In this regard, the recently departed poet and scholar Eunice
de Souza complained, "My blood boils when I hear an Indian talking
about "Indian culture". This is a primitive impulse, finding something
coherent and limited and saying, "This is Indian culture", and
everybody else is excluded." It should be noted she was a sincere
admirer of 'The Adivasi will not Dance', calling it "a fine book of
stories." This most discerning of critics wrote, "I'm not interested
in the ethnicity of writers, just whether they have something to say
that

[Goanet] A Train To Pakistan

2017-08-12 Thread Roland Francis
In a few days it will be the 70th anniversary of the Indian sub-continent's
freedom from Britain.

Over the years, much has been written about the circumstances surrounding the
partition of India and Pakistan. The late Khushwant Singh's 1956 book 'Train to
Pakistan' describes not only the politics but also the human suffering that
caused and accompanied it. In the words of a British journalist who had
witnessed the death camps in Nazi Germany and was then covering the history
occurring in 1947 Delhi, "Auschwitz was in no way comparable to the savagery on
the border".

Al Jazeera is running a very interesting coverage of that gory time, in the
form of survivor interviews and oral recordings. They have done a wonderful
job, as you can see from one of their articles linked below.

[Goanet] Did you know: the Taj Mahal was built by the Hindus and gifted to Emperor Shah Jahan

2017-08-12 Thread BT Yahoo Mail

One BK Ayyangar, approached the ASI through an RTIapplication saying that the
Taj Mahal was really "TejoMahalaya", built by the Hindus and gifted to Mughal
Emperor Shah Jahan by RajputKing Maan Singh.

Claiming to be a historian, one PN Oak said he had written a book"Taj Mahal:
The True Story", arguing that Taj Mahal was originally aShiva temple gifted to
Shah Jahan.

Oak had approached the Supreme Court in 2000 on his thesis but the SupremeCourt
dismissed the case, accusing him for having 'a bee in his bonnet' aboutthe Taj
Mahal.

The Central Information Commission (CIC) has directed theUnion culture ministry
to clarify the status of  the Taj Mahal .

GENERAL COMMENT
The Hindus (especiallythe BJP/RSS type) have long been feeling inadequate &
inferior over their insignificantrole in history and have decided to do
something about it.
In particular, the Second Millennium sawassorted invaders enter Hindustan
starting with Mahmud of Ghazni in c 1000 CEand ending with Brexit in 1947.

The Hindu elites have been smarting at theirfailure to confront and overthrow
the invaders. As a result, the Hindutva elites(mostly the upper castes) are
trying hard to make India a global power by aneconomic and military route but
at the cost of the health and wellbeing of thepoorer people.

The Hindutvalas also have a project of revenge against the Muslims for
theircenturies of control of Hindustan. In 2002, some 2000 were massacred in
Gujarat(with Modi as CM) and more recently Muslims are being lynched on flimsy
proteststo do with cows and beef (Modi is PM). [Mind you, there is no similar
vengeful programme against the British. The Hindu elites are grateful to the
British for creating the Indian state& all its institutions. ]

The Hindutvalashave next sought to falsify history:
- they go back to ancient (Vedic) times when dates and data are uncertain
andclaim glorious accomplishments such as implanting animal organs onto humans
(asin the case of god Ganesh) and achieving interplanetary travel.
- they distort more recent historical incidents or simply fabricating events.

Examples:
- the Taj Mahal was really a Rajput monument gifted to the Moghuls
- India won the 1962 War by defeating the Chinese.

In HinduRashtra, anything goes –ethics, tolerance or historical truth can be
dispensed with.
