[Goanet] George Pell To Stand On Trial

2018-04-30 Thread Roland Francis
A magistrate in Australia has ruled that Cardinal Pell should stand on trial
for some of the sex charges (but not others) that are laid against him.

30 witnesses came forward to testify against the Cardinal but he still insisted
that he was ‘not guilty’ in his plea to all the charges.

Time and the proceedings in court will tell if not the whole, at least a large
part of the story of Australia’s most influential Catholic and the Vatican’s
third most powerful bureaucrat. Guilty or not, his past will be laid out in
public for all to know.

Australia and the world will keenly follow the legal proceedings, the verdict
and if found guilty, the punishment.

Re: [Goanet] UK: 29 April Cortalim Celebrates Ruby Anniversary – A Champagne event at Beer Prices (Updated - Without Attachment)

2018-04-30 Thread Christopher Da Cruz
Dear All

Apologies as it looks like the attachment sent on the last email distorted
the article. Resending at Melvyn's request, but without the attachment this
time. Many thanks.

UK: 29 April Cortalim Celebrates Ruby Anniversary – A Champagne event at
Beer Prices

With the cold icy wind from the artic still blasting the London (England)
area since the start of the feasts season just after Lent there is nothing
like the warm welcome that awaits the annual get togethers at Goan village
feasts where our people with their family and friends meet greet pray and
celebrate together all the ingredients forwards health and well-being as
personal troubles are forgotten for at least one day.

Taking centre stage this year was the 40th Anniversary of Cortalim Union UK
celebrating the Feast of St Philip & St James at the newly Refurbished
Archbishop Lanfranc Academy near Croydon. 40 Years is a long time ago and
the dedication with good governance of committee members past and present
must be acknowledged to keep any organisation going in these difficult
days. Village organisations play a vital part in keeping the spirit of Goa
alive. The support given by Cortalim Union members and guest is no
exception as many travelled long distances to meet greet and celebrate.

Sunday Mass Celebrant was Fr.Tony Fernandes (Nairobi/Aldona/Manchester) who
informed about the importance of communication with young people as he
explained the reading Peter3:18-24. The mass ended with a special prayer
for the beatification of Fr. Annelo D'Souza, a must that should be included
at every Goan celebration. After mass, Holy pictures were distributed by
Francis Gomes on behalf of the Gomes Family while the seating was
rearranged to reveal an intricately decorated hall based on the collective
creative talents of Lourdes Da Cruz, Loretta Da Costa, Sandra Fernandes and
Linda Thomson. It could easily pass as the state ballroom of Buckingham
Palace as no effort was spared. A personalised tag was designed for
everyone to collect a gift bag containing the 40th Anniversary Souvenir,
delightfully edited by Christopher Da Cruz, and a China mug embossed with
the picture of Cortalim Church of St Philip and St James and the logo of
Cortalim Union UK.

The Logo at first glance is unusual, but on explanation the “C” is
converted into the rising sun and “U” is into water/ocean with swaying
palms to emphasise the nature of Cortalim. Orange is the warmth of Cortalim
People. Blue is for Perfection, Professionalism and Unity. This criteria
was emulated 100 percent in the anniversary cake designed by Lourdes Da
Cruz, and not forgetting the flower buttonholes by Piedade D'Mello and
Franskina Lobo.

No Goan Party is complete without the ingredients of Good Food, Music and
Drink . The Sumptuous meal was provided by Bernie's Catering (0208 764
0445) and music by OUTBREAK led by Tome De Souza (Band lead), Valentine
Fernandes (singer), Vency Dias, Keegan Abreu, Savio Pacheco and Kim Abreu.
The generation gap was filled in by DJ Stephanie and solo singer Druston
D'Mello, while the lovely Maria Da Silva from Leicester thrilled guests
with her very entertaining Belly Dance. A mention must be made for the low
cost bar services provided by Cos Fernandes and Conrad Henriques of Coscon
Bar Services (07985 22 7757) who contributed to the feel good factor
keeping all entertained and in liquid refreshed till well after sunset.
Spare a thought for the organisers, it would have been a long day
organising a Champagne Event at Beer Prices ... people came happy and went
home happier - long may this trend continue. Well done Cortalim Union.

Cortalim Union is always seeking to extend its mwmbership.Membership is
extended to uk residents from neighgouring villages of
Sancoale,Agacaim,Rasaim and Verna.Please contact cortalimunio...@gmail.com

[Goanet] Mining Mystery And Other Mysteries

2018-04-30 Thread Joao Barros-Pereira
Add my name to the list of all the others who do not understand what
is going on in Goa. We all know what a mess the mining industry is
going through presently but we cannot understand how it got to be this
way! It is an industry, isn't it? There are rules and regulations,
aren't there? Who is to blame for the catastrophe? I and a lot of
Goans don't understand at all.

The Supreme Court says there are illegal mining leases. What does this
mean? Someone, I assume, issued the illegal leases. Am I wrong to
assume it is the government? So, who was in charge? No one? It is an
industry, and the oldest in the history of Goa, so it is organized,
isn't it? If the government is responsible then it goes without saying
the government has to take responsibility. Or no one is responsible as
mining has been good for Goa, and the government can get away with
anything? Will there be no solution to this problem other than the
Congress Party blaming the BJP and vice versa. End of story?

Is development another word for being able to get away with anything?
The government is above the law? Does the Indian constitution say the
government is above the law? Break the law in any sector and then use
ordinances to get away with it? Is it the special privilege of the
government to break the law in the name of development? I don't think
anyone would agree with this!

Some miners unlike rabbits have burrowed much deeper into the holy
earth of Goa in their search for brown gold. Have they done wrong by
excavating much more than they were given permission? And, they have
become rich through illegal mining and theft. Very rich. The have
gotten away with thousands of crores, more zeros than my math skills
can track or understand. One state in India has penalized the bad boys
of mining for doing the same. But will the Goa government fine them?
It is a mystery. Some people say the government will do nothing as the
government has a big heart, for the rich, at least.

The mining dependents want the government to bail them out which is a
complicated line of reasoning, and I can't follow it. We understand
their livelihood and future is precarious but that is the nature of
doing business. What about other businessmen, especially, sons-of-
the-soil? Will they also be bailed out if they fail in business? Will
government bail out everyone who fails in business? If the government
bails out everyone who fails in business I can understand their
thinking and actions. Otherwise, it is a mystery.

As the government is primarily responsible for this mess in the first
place, it will be beyond conscience to proceed with this line of
reasoning or issuing ordinances. The world will be shocked and so will
Goans who cannot understand what is going on. Is it a mystery?

The Royal Builders were boosted with a strong team with Michel Castanha

The Black Arrows began to strike early on, but two neat saves by the
Builders custodian Rhea Noronha denied them the opener.

Ansiva Vaz’s slight touch off Ashika’s long shot landed swiftly into the
nets giving them the much deserving 1-0 lead.

On the other hand, the Builders coach Maria Rebello took full advantage of
the rolling substitution to help her side equalize by bringing in new feet
on field, but they failed to make a mark onto the scoresheet as the Arrows

Five minutes into the second half, the Arrows made it 3-0 as first Ansiva

Mons. D'Souza was helpful in letting the committee and others involved the

instrumental in bringing Cardinal Cordeiro for the convention.
Rightly, the Mississauga municipality has named the street in his honour. The

[Goanet] Special status for moneybags headed to Goa (Dr Claude Alvares)

2018-04-30 Thread Goanet Reader
SPECIAL STATUS FOR MONEYBAGS HEADED TO GOA!

FB post by Claude Alvares

For the past ten years now, Goa has been almost in a
permanent state of war. There have been regular invading
armies and conquests, mostly originating out of Delhi, or
Mumbai, or even Haryana and other places, each biting off
slices of Goan villages, and the Goa government has in every
conceivable case, gone all out to support them.

The political leaders who run this government only come to
the villagers when they want their votes.

Look at these simple facts about the new brewery and
distillery approved for erection at Amdai, on the banks of
the Uguem river -- a depressing repeat of hundreds of similar
invasions being fought at Cavelossim, Carmona, Tiracol, etc:

* The land at Amdai (64,439 sq mts) is purchased in 2013 by
Vani Agro Farms, registered in Delhi, headed by Guptas and
Jains, for the sum of Rs.2,39,71,308 (Rs.2.4 crores) from
Anselm Furtado and Sheryl Furtado, living at Chouquivaddo,
Carmona. The adjoining plot of 60,000 sq.mts is also bought
up by the same group, so now the total land acquired is
1,24,439 sq.mts. Vani Agro applies to Canara Bank for a
  loan of 43 crores.

* The land is zoned as orchard in the regional plan, because
it has magnificent spread of coconut and cashew trees. The
new owners claim in a media interview that the Tree Act
being amended to exclude coconut trees, they do not need
permission to mass-kill the trees on the plots.

* According to the project report, there is "plentiful
water" to produce 5 lakh hecto litres of beer. There is
simply no acknowledgement that the water belongs to -- and
has been hitherto sustainably enjoyed by -- the people
living in the area. The water, in fact, belongs to them
since they have been using it for decades.

* The company applies for permission to extract 506 m3
daily from the Uguem river on 11.11.2013. This is granted
by the Water Resources Department on 26.11.2013, in less
than 15 working days. The Uguem river today is the only
source of water for hundreds of ordinary Goan villagers for
all their primary needs ranging from drinking to washing
clothes. (Ironically, at this very moment, the Goa
government is fighting the Karnataka government which wants
to divert the waters of the Madei river to provide drinking
water to Hubli and other Karnataka cities!)

* The company applies for a public health clearance on
29.7.2013. The PH certificate is promptly issued by Dr
Vinod Naik, Goan Health Officer, on 31.7.2013.

* The company applies for an NOC from the Sanguem Municipal
Council on 18.7.2013 and, lo and behold, a provisional NOC
is issued by Goan Chief Officer, Pramod V. Desai, on
26.7.2013 (within one week). The CO does not consult the
elected council. He issues the certificate on his own.

* The company applies for Town Planning permission. However,
even before the TCP can consider the proposal, the new Goa
Public Investment Board approves the proposal on 16/01/2015
and at two further meetings held on 17/6/2015 and
6/10/2015. The officers or people at the Public Investment
Board who approved this file include Martin Ghosh, Nitin
Kunkoliencar, Atul Pai Kane and some functionaries
  including the CM.

When ordinary Goans approach the same bodies for similar
permissions or approvals, they are made to run around coconut
trees. Now even that may not be possible, because at Amdai,
more than 1,000 coconut trees will be cut to produce liquor
and beer for tourists and other elements, as if they haven't
already drunk themselves senseless.

No further comment, I believe, is necessary.

Similar scenario was repeated earlier at Tiracol as well,
where the entire village lost 12,12,000 sq mts out of
13,84,000 sq.mts for a golf course again by another Delhi
party, the Jatias, through Leading Hotels. The CM has been
openly backing that project as well.

Got the message? Want more cases?

Competent Automobiles (Maruti-Suzuki dealers from Delhi) have
purchased prime beach area in Cavelossim even though the
village and panchayat say they do not want another five-star
hotel in their midst. At Baga, huge illegal constructions put
up at La Calypso, had to be finally demolished because of
court orders. The owner of La Calypso is from Delhi. Who
allowed him to build and exploit the illegal structures for
years? The answer is blowing in the wind.

So it is time we scrapped the pretence of having become an
independent State in 1987. We were ruled from New Delhi from
1961-1987. After 1987, our new landlords are also coming from
Delhi while 12,000 Goans have acquired Portuguese passports.

As Alfred E. Neuman from MAD magazine used to say in my kid
days in the mid-1960s: "Something funny is going on here!"

Please circulate to all Goan networks because the people of
Amdai are determined to fight this latest conquest, and they
will need your help and support.

Goa Catholic Church is targetted in 'hate video' as stir
against urbanisation plan stings government

The anonymously

development projects.

Pamela D'Mello

A video targetting the Catholic Church in Goa for its
purported anti-development positions is "meant to incite
violence and cause disturbances", the Aam Aadmi Party said in
a police complaint filed on Wednesday. The video emerged
online in the wake of the decision of a Church affiliate, the
Council for Social Justice and Peace, to join 14 other civil
society groups to oppose the state's plan to urbanise nearly
two dozen villages.

Organising under an umbrella body called Goencho Awaz, or
Goa's Voice, the groups are currently mobilising support for
a protest meeting in Margao last Friday.

The video -- the source of which is as yet unknown -- lists
several initiatives that it claimed the Church has opposed,
including the Konkan Railway, the plan to build a new airport
at Mopa and school education in Konkani. "Goemkars [Goa
residents] don't get misled," the video declares.

In its complaint, which has been filed against "unknown
persons", the Aam Aadmi Party says that the video "brazenly
seeks to promote communalism by inciting hatred against the
Christian community".

A grab from the controversial video.

The Goencho Awaz coalition was formed in response
to a decision by the Manohar Parrikar government in
December to put 22 villages in North Goa under the
jurisdiction of various urban Planning and
  Development Authorities, essentially declaring them
urban areas. This decision was opposed by residents
of these villages, who contended that it would
cause "unnecessary urbanisation" and destroy their
way of life. Their protests drew support from
  several social organisations.

On March 31, the Goa government relented, but only partially:
Town and Country Planning Minister Vijai Sardesai said most
of the 16 villages given over to the Greater Panjim Planning
and Development Authority would be dropped from the plan.
Sardesai's Goa Forward Party is a key member of Parrikar's
Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition in the state.

The protestors were not satisfied and continued their
agitation at Panjim's Azad Maidan. They demanded that instead
of urbanising the villages, the state government should amend
the Town and Country Planning Act to give Village Development
Committees more authority as mandated by 73rd and 74th
amendments to the Constitution.

Sardesai hit back, alleging that the protestors were making
"anarchic demands". He attacked the Church for supporting the
agitation and accused it of "playing politics to destabilise
the government". Also targeting the opposition Congress, he
said the agitation was aimed at forcing him to break his Goa
Forward Party's alliance with the BJP.

'It is a diversion'

Though the anti-Church video has been produced anonymously,
political observers claim that it is the handiwork of
supporters of the Goa Forward Party. Ironcially, it could
damage the political standing of Sardesai, who has lately
emerged as the de facto acting chief minister in the absence
of the ailing Parrikar. In fact, if the growing opposition to
the urbanisation plan is any indication, Sardesai's image has
already taken a hit for championing the Planning and
Development Authorities, which have become synonymous with
corruption and for promoting builder interests in Goa.

... activists involved with the protests said the minister’s
outburst and the video that has followed are an attempt to
shift the focus away from the real issues. "Obviously, it is
a diversion," said Abhijeet Prabhudesai of Rainbow Warriors,
one of the constituents of Goencho Awaz. "The main issue is
that the Regional Plan 2021 is full of scams and corruption,
which they desperately want to take our attention away from.
But I don't think they will succeed because people are quite
aware what is at stake. People will recognise these moves for
what they are."

The Regional Plan 2021, in abeyance since 2012, was recently
revived by Sardesai. Activists allege that the plan aims to
commercialise rural land and hand it over to private players
to construct high-rise buildings or develop as controversial
eco-tourism zones.

Goa Catholic Church is targetted in 'hate video' as stir
against urbanisation plan stings government

The anonymously
produced video claims
that the Church has
consistently opposed
development projects.

[Goanet] UK: 29 April Cortalim Celebrates Ruby Anniversary – A Champagne event at Beer Prices

UK: 29 April Cortalim Celebrates Ruby Anniversary – A Champagne event at Beer
Prices

With the cold icy wind from the artic still blasting the London (England) area
since the start of the feasts season just before Lent there is nothing like the
warm welcome that awaits the annual get togethers at Goan village feasts where
our people with their family and friends meet greet pray and celebrate together
all the ingredients forwards health and wellbeing as personal troubles are
forgotten for at least one day.

Taking centre stage this year was the 40th Annivisary of Cortalim Union UK
celebrating the Feast of St Philip & St James at the newly Refurbished
Archbishop Lanfranc Academy nr Croydon.40 Years is a long time ago and the
dedication with good governance of committee members past and present must be
acknowledged to keep any organisation going in these difficult days. Village
organisations play a vital part in keeping the spirit of Goa alive. The support
given by Cortalim union members and guest is no exception as many travelled
long distances to meet greet and celebrate.

Sunday Mass Celebrant was Fr.Tony Fernandes (Nairobi/Aldona/Manchester) who
informed about the importance of communication with young people as he
explained the reading Peter3:18-24. After mass , Holy pictures were distributed
by Francis on behalf of the Gomes Family while the seating was rearranged to an
intricately decorated hall with the collective creative talent of Lourdes Da
Cruz,Loreta Da Costa,Sandra Fernandes and Linda Thomson. it could easily pass
as the state ballroom of Buckingham Palace no effort was spared. A personalised
tag was designed for everyone to collect a gift bag containing the 40th
Anniversary Souvenir delightfully edited by Christopher Da Cruz and a China mug
embossed with the picture of Cortalim Church of St Philip and St James along
with the logo of Cortalim Union Uk.

The Logo at first glance is unusual on explanation “C” is converted into the
rising sun and “U” is into water/ocean with swaying palms to emphasize the
nature of Cortalim .Orange is the warmth of Cortalim People. Blue is for
perfection, Professionalism and Unity. This criteria was 100 percent including
the annivisary cake designed by Lourdes Da Cruz not forgetting the flower
buttonholes by Piedade DMello and Francina Lobo.

No Goan Party is complete without the ingredients of Good Food,Music and Drink
,the Sumptuous meal was provided by Bernies Catering, music by John Pinheiro
Lead Guitar and Singer,Hilary Pinheiro Drummer,Amorin on Bass Pratnov Fernandes
Keyboard Player Gladrin Fernandes female singer apologies to Rainbows end and
Outbreak I may have got you mixed up both good bands. The generation gap was
filled in by DJ Stephanie and a mention must be made for the low cost bar
services provided by Cos Fernandes and Conrad Henriques of Coscon Bar Services
who contributed to the feel good factor keepin all entairtained and in liquid
refreshment till well after sunset.Spare a thought or the organisers it will
have been a long day organising a champagne event at Beer Prices people came
happy and went home happier long may this trend continue.

[Goanet] Democracy dies in darkness: India’s press under threat (Times of India, 30/4/2018)

2018-04-30 Thread V M
https://epaper.timesgroup.com/Olive/ODN/TimesOfIndia/shared/ShowArticle.aspx?doc=TOIGO%2F2018%2F04%2F30=Ar00416=B8815C0E=text
Just over a year ago, the Washington Post began running a motto on its
front page that is even more relevant for India. In Februrary 2017,
‘Democracy Dies in Darkness’ first appeared on the eminent newspaper’s
masthead. It was widely understood to be a warning about what could
result from President Trump’s sustained assault on the media, and
various institutions of the American state. The same idea applies more
urgently in India, which dropped two more places in the latest World
Press Freedom Index released last week by the Paris-based Reporters
Without Borders (RWB). The same country we all celebrate as “the
world’s biggest democracy” shamefully ranks 138 out of 180 countries,
behind even war-torn Afghanistan and economically devastated Zimbabwe.

The situation in India is best understood in a global context. RWB
says “Hostility towards the media from political leaders is no longer
limited to authoritarian countries such as Turkey (down two at 157th)
and Egypt (161st), where “media-phobia” is now so pronounced that
journalists are routinely accused of terrorism and all those who don’t
offer loyalty are arbitrarily imprisoned. More and more
democratically-elected leaders no longer see the media as part of
democracy’s essential underpinning, but as an adversary to which they
openly display their aversion.” About India, the watchdog body
concludes “hate speech targeting journalists is shared and amplified
on social networks, often by troll armies in Prime Minister Narendra
Modi’s pay.”

RWB elaborates, “with Hindu nationalists trying to purge all
manifestations of ‘anti-national’ thought from the national debate,
self-censorship is growing in the mainstream media and journalists are
increasingly the targets of online smear campaigns by the most radical
nationalists, who vilify them and even threaten physical reprisals.”
The outstandingly analytical writer Pankaj Mishra put it very well
earlier this week, “Armies of trolls using Twitter, WhatsApp and
Facebook have manufactured a whole new reality: one in which Muslims,
liberals, secularists, leftists and various other "anti-nationals" are
seeking to thwart hard-working Prime Minister Narendra Modi from
creating a glorious Hindu nation.”

Democracy in India has already suffered severe damage. Several senior
editors have been forced out after less than sycophantic coverage of
the administration. The most recent case is of Harish Khare of The
Tribune, after running a story about flaws in the Aadhar system.
According to the Columbia Journalism Review (based in New York) this
is recreating the media infrastructure so that everyone from “the
owners down to editorial staff often seem to be a willing participant
in the project of Hindu nationalism.” This is creeping
totalitarianism, exacerbated by the desi propensity to crawl when
merely asked to bend (as LK Advani said about the press during Indira
Gandhi’s Emergency).

Of course this is not the whole story. India’s vastness combined with
unique ethnic, cultural, and economic diversity make it naturally
difficult for totalitarianism to take hold. Even as the ruling BJP
spectacularly rolls out its political agenda across the country, it is
still compelled to tweak the message to suit the specific
constituency. What works in UP cannot apply in Goa or the North East,
and this applies to press freedoms just as much as it does to
communalism. These nuances were clearly evident in India’s smallest
state, when the Parrikar administration retreated almost overnight
from its absurd and exclusionary new accreditation guidelines when the
Goa Union of Journalists protested about the attack on “the very root
of the freedom of speech.”

Thomas Jefferson is often credited with saying, “eternal vigilance is
the price of liberty.” This means freedom to investigate and
criticize, and occasionally to bring down those who threaten democracy
even if they are popular or entrenched in power. Our system of
governance rests on four pillars: Judiciary, Executive, Legislative
and Media. Today that foundation is increasingly shaky, as all are
being undermined. But if the fourth estate becomes fatally
compromised, there is no hope for the other three.
