2018-05-14 Thread goa sevens
Greetings,

Kindly find below the *full match report* of GSPL QF 2 between SESA FA and
FC Bardez at Ambelim Sports Complex, Ambelim.

*FC Bardez register 3-1 win over SESA *

*Inacio and Hanslum score two late goals for winners*

___

*MAY 14, AMEBLIM: *Two late goals helped FC Bardez beat SESA FA 3-1 to seal
a semis spot in the Goa Sevens Premier League, organised by Goa Sevens and
Ambelim Sports Club in association with Goa Football Association (GFA) at
Ambelim Sports Complex, on Monday.

The SESA team came into this quarter final game off two straight wins in
their group phase, while the Bardez team registered one win while they
suffered one loss.

The Bardez side began the game with better attacking as Clinton Niasso’s
powerful shot on target was kept at bay by an alert SESA defender Babu
Naik. The first two minutes saw the Bardez team come out with five shots on
target but the academy keeper cleared all dangers.

And it was to no surprise that FC Bardez side took an early lead as
Clinton’s corner was neatly tapped in by Neville Albuquerque. The SESA side
came close to scoring as Rovan Pereira failed to place his strong left
footer on target as it went wide

The FC Bardez side had a chance to double their lead but Clinton’s long
ranger went high from post as they went into the break with a 1-0 lead over
the SESA side.

Moving into the second half, the SESA side came out stronger with Cyrus
Noronha and Kunal Salgaocar moving deep down. Dhiraj Chauhan placed in a
perfect long ball inside to substitute Ryan Fernandes but the later failed
to control the ball inside the box.

The SESA side managed to tap in a close ball inside but the referee pointed
out for an offside. But the Academy team made it 1-1 two minutes later as
Cyrus Noronha moved in swiftly from the left side and placed his low shot
into the nets as the SESA side were looking for a strong comeback.

Post this, the Bardez side kept putting pressure onto the backline as first
Jessel Carneiro’s shot off a free kick was closely saved by the SESA keeper
while later, Ronil Azavedo shot high from far. The Bardez side finally
managed to take the lead in the final additional time as Inacio Colaco
tapped it in off Jessel’s pass. Substitute Hanslum Furtado added another
late goal as his first touch landed into the nets as the Bardez side won
3-1.

[Goanet] GSPL Women's Festival: Match 14: Black Arrows beat Skyla Strikers via tie breaker

2018-05-14 Thread goa sevens
Greetings,

Kindly find below the *full match report* of GSPL 2 Women’s Football
Festival Match 14 between Black Arrows and Skyla Strikers.

*Black Arrows beat Skyla Strikers via tie breaker*

*Both teams played tough goalless draw*

___

*MAY 14, AMBELIM: *Black Arrows beat Skyla Strikers 2-1 via the tie breaker
in the Sevens Women’s Football Festival organised by Goa Sevens and Ambelim
Sports Club played at Ambelim Sports Complex, Ambelim on Monday.

Both the sides playing the last game of this women’s festival began on a
positive note with both teams pressing to find the opener. Rajia Pereira of
the Arrows had an easy run into the box but failed to place her strike on
target.

Cia Almeida and Alisha Tavares kept the Skyla defence working round the
clock as the aimed to move deep with one to one passing. Cia Almeida should
have given the Black Arrows a lead but she failed to strike at the correct
time amidst a blank back line.

The first half was completely dominated by the Arrows but they failed to
take the advantage as both sides headed into half time goalless.

In the second half, the Arrows began from where they had left as Cia along
with Ansiva Vaz tried their lucky to score but their shots failed to land
into the nets. For the Strikers, Jeromina Colaco and Reema Noronha tried
moving the ball forward into the oppositions den.

The second half saw an end to end game as both sides had their share of
chances. But the best one was for the Arrows as Alisha Tavares missed to
score on an open target after receiving a shot pass from Cia at the right
flank.

In the tie breaker, Ansiva Vaz and Ashika Gadekar scored for the Black
Arrows while Mayflower Colaco converted for the Skyla Strikers.

Funny dialogues and zesty characters make for pure entertainment

Goa is a fertile hunting ground for tall stories. Given its 450 years of
Portuguese domination, the many colourful travellers from Europe who have
faithfully (or otherwise) recorded their observations, including a detailed
and vivid account of the Inquisition, its blooming as the destination of
the ‘flower power’ generation of the 60s, its contemporary status as a
laidback holiday centre, and its political games of musical chairs, which
between 1990 and 2005 saw a roll call of as many as 15 chief ministers, a
few of them ‘repeaters’, one would have imagined at least a shelf-full of
novels on the place. Inexplicably, this has not happened, at least not in
English. Even during the Portuguese era, such offerings were few, notable
among them being *O Signo da Ira *(The Sign of Wrath) by Orlando da Costa.
Just two relatively recent novels, *Tivolem* by Victor Rangel-Rebeiro and *Let
Me Tell You About Quinta* by Savia Viegas, have been successful in
capturing the aura of the place beyond the usual bromides of sun, sand and
sea.

Varied cast

Now we have Sudeep Chakravarti’s *The Baptism of Tony Calangute*, which in
itself is a reissue of *Once Upon a Time in Aparanta*, first published in
2008. Chakravarti is a versatile writer, having recently published the
widely acclaimed *The Bengalis: A Portrait of a Community*, among other
books. He has also published two other novels. *Tony Calangute* is no
conventional crime novel but a spoof of this genre, replete with the most
unsavoury characters, including the arch villain Winston Almeida, a greedy
land-grabber and owner of the football team Almeida United; his two
brothers, the cartoonish Iosif and the ambitious and ruthless Franklin, all
from Varca; the corrupt cop PI Fernandes; the sadistic Brazilian
transsexual known only as Princess; the Russian Sergei Yurlov, the ‘viceroy
of trance’; and a host of others all pitted against the good guys, chiefly
Tony Calangute himself, owner of Happy Bar in the barely fictionalised
village of Succoro Do Mundo, and his cousin, Dino Dantas, the zealous
activist and “self-appointed scourge of the fat cats of Aparanta” and the
true hero of the book. A host of other minor characters, including a few
“indu buggers”, flit in and out of the novel, which in the old days would
have been called an ‘entertainment’.

Inventive language

And it is entertaining, the narrative speedy and often funny, though the
colloquial lingo used seems more akin to Bandra English than Goan English,
if such a genre actually exists. Here is a sample by Chakravarti via the
villain Almeida: “What our aim is? Victory only. Victory only for fit
buggers. Survival of — dis ting — survival of fittest, I am telling y’all.
Udderwise, Goa going nowhere. No ticket only, so how to go? Mummy, daddy,
childrens, young peoples, all be sad, no? Dis my goal, not only penalty
only, but straight, dribbling like centre forward, one-nil, two-nil,
tree-nil!... So y’all come and togedder like football team we go, all like
centre forward, and score many goals for Goa…States for the peoples, lands
for the peoples and powers for the peoples. Den only we all will be rich
peoples and all. *Den* only.” The language would have rung more true if the
author had incorporated commonly used Konkani expressions derived from the
Portuguese, but it is amusing and inventive nevertheless.

[image: 'The Baptism of Tony Calangute' review: Udderwise, Goa going
nowhere]

Most people in Goa, even
the ‘Catlicks’ (to use Chakravarti’s argot), would justifiably dispute the
colloquialisms used in the book. In these politically correct times, it can
even be risky to employ such parlance in print, more so if it’s out of
context. Chakravarti is not guilty of that and, besides, his conventional
language is both fluid and expressive.

Towards the end of the novel, truth eventually prevails, but at great cost
and with plenty of dead bodies strewn around. There are several, easily
identifiable parallels to real-life characters, but the malice, if any, is
probably not intended. *Tony Calangute* is an entertaining beachside (or
poolside) read.

[Goanet] The Persian Empire Cashew Feni

2018-05-14 Thread Roland Francis
Life is full of surprises.

Who would have thought that an Iranian would have opened a Govt-licensed
distillery in a town about an hour and 15 minutes drive from Toronto making
decent cashew Feni.

Thanks to Bruce Kabbazi who I suspect may have studied in India in his younger
days, been enamoured of it and one day actually making it himself.

I’ll get his story, if there is one. Meanwhile his employee has offered to
deliver it when they get a couple of orders in my part of town.

Viva to the Persian Empire, the distillery that makes this Feni and sells it
for $35.
