An excellent format deserving of a regular weekly feature.

A ‘sock it to them’ journalist like Nagvenkar reading between the lines of
‘handcuffed’ Goa newspapers who act like ‘caged parrots’. Aires Rodrigues’
phrase, not mine.

Resident Goans can experience the facts. Diaspora Goans are well served only by
the truth from sources like ‘blunt-force’ Nagvenkar.

On the other hand, the modern buildings that came to be known as Art Deco
were almost wholly designed, financed and built by Indians in the mid-1930s
as the new style swept through the world. In recent times, academics have
shown interest in studying the international connections of Bombay Art Deco
with Miami, Havana and other coastal cities.

[Goanet] PLEASE PRAY FOR EVITA

2018-06-30 Thread Aires Rodrigues
We are so happy to share with you the very good news that our dear daughter
Evita has been selected for the BA degree Programme which begins next month
at St Stephen’s College in Delhi.

St. Stephen's College which was founded on 1st February 1881, as an
educational institution of higher learning is regarded as one of the best
colleges in the country. Nationwide surveys have consistently described the
college as amongst the best in India for both Arts and Sciences.

Evita had done us proud in attaining 91% at the results of the ICSE (Std X)
and later having scored 93% at the XII Std.

We remain ever so indebted to the entire team at Sharada Mandir in Miramar
for all their untiring efforts at that Temple of Education to make Evita’s
over a decade of learning there a very outstanding one. Besides her hard
and persuasive work, the credit goes to all her teachers and the staff at
Sharada Mandir not forgetting her tutors. The last year in Pune at Flame
University was also very eventful.

With a passion for debating and public speaking, Evita looks set to be on
target to pursue the legal profession paving the way for her dad to plan
his retirement! It will eventually be over to you Advocate Evita Rodrigues.

Hope Evita always remains humble, inspired and guided by those very
cheering words of Lily Tomlin "The road to success is always under
construction"

 Stars Next Door)(Long)

Very interesting. This is about the PUNE ( POONA that time). I was born in
Poona during the secobd world war, bred and buttered there (School and
College). Such a beautiful place like Bangalore was; no pollution or
flooding but now with the slighest rain and heavy traffic, "development" etc
it is terrible. The book has described the change and attitude of people
there today! I used to go there yearly on a holiday to meet old friends and
relatives. I have stopped during the last 20 years. I felt like crying when
I saw and smelt what they have done to my beloved Poona! Loosing battle
trying to stem the same thing hapenning here!

[Goanet] No Country for Women (original title) - Times of India, 30/6/2018

2018-06-30 Thread V M
https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/has-india-failed-to-safeguard-welfare-of-women/articleshow/6479.cms

Uproar raged all this week, after the release of an obviously flawed
international survey by Thomson Reuters Foundation which ranked India
the world’s most dangerous country for women. It was immediately clear
the methodology was highly questionable, with no application of actual
data, but instead relying entirely on the opinions of 548 “experts”
(41 from India). Together, they listed “the world’s largest democracy”
dead last after considering six categories that affect women’s
welfare: healthcare, discrimination, cultural traditions, sexual
violence, non-sexual violence and human trafficking. In its official
response, the Ministry of Women and Child Development headed by Maneka
Gandhi retorted angrily to what it called an “effort to malign the
nation and draw attention away from real improvements seen in recent
years.”

Even beyond the deeply dubious “opinion poll” method of deriving
results, the kind of ranking system used by Thomson Reuters is
inherently absurd. How could a democracy like India (or the USA, which
ranked an astonishing 10thworst in the world) be compared directly to
totalitarian regimes where women are denied basic rights by fiat, or
war-devastated countries where basic survival is under constant
threat? Still, as pointed out by Geeta Pander of the BBC, “The
government has been quick to question the Reuters survey, but India
has no reason to gloat - a look at the official crime statistics for
2016 shows a woman was raped every 13 minutes; six women were
gang-raped every day; a bride was murdered for dowry every 69 minutes;
and 19 women were attacked with acid every month.”

Even beyond horrific crime statistics – which skew mightily worse in
the north Indian states known as “the cow belt” – there are many
extremely worrisome indicators that women in India are besieged by
multiple hazards. The most basic is malnutrition, where the country
fares especially abysmally, even when compared to neighbouring
Bangladesh and Pakistan. According to the latest United Nations data,
an incredible 51.4% of Indian women of reproductive age are
chronically anemic, lwhich directly translates to almost 40% of the
children in the country being clinically “stunted” (ong-term
nutritional deprivation affecting mental development and intellectual
capacity). This is beyond crisis. It is a national failure on an epic
scale.

Parse the data even further, and deeply entrenched cultural cruelties
quickly emerge. Earlier this year, the United Nations issued the
results of studying gender equality in 89 countries. The global
scenario is a mixed bag, but India’s record is a catalogue of outright
horrors, all of which are exacerbated by the most staggering
inequalities on the planet. For example, the average age of death for
upper-caste women is 54.1 years (itself incredibly bad in a world
where the equivalent is above 80 in over 40 other countries). But for
Dalit women, the average age of death is almost a full decade and a
half lower, an unconscionable 39.5 years. Forget the silly Reuters
opinion poll. This data is the strongest possible indictment of Indian
society’s failure to safeguard the welfare of women.

But still there is more, which is manifested by absence. These are the
mission millions of women who do not live and breathe at this very
moment due to pernicious female foeticide and infanticide that
persists in many states in India. According to the ministry of
statistics and programme implementation, “The reduction in sex ratio
of youth is found to be much more than that of the overall population.
It has come down to 939 in 2011 as compared to 961 in 1971 and is
projected to decline further to 904 in 2021 and 898 in 2031.” In
Haryana, there are already fewer than 860 women per 1000 males.

Here in Goa, there are both positive and negative trends apparent. The
overall figures are better than the (very bad) national average. But
the Catholic minority is 1129 women per 1000 men, while the Hindu
majority is only 929.
