Thanks for sharing about Jazreel.

Had no idea we had someone from Saligao. I am close enough at Carona just past
Saligao.

She really brought back memories of our Goa houses and the "poder" with his
bell and cycle early morning with the poes and kakon that as kids we used to
put around our skinny little hands!

Jazreel is beautiful and her paintings are amazing!

Thanks again

[Goanet] Good-hearted person Mr Francis De Souza.

2018-09-25 Thread Arlette Azavedo
Well, I am posting this article which I had written for our local newspaper
but they simply refused to print it as they found it 'unsuitable'.

Dear Goodhearted Person
How would one define a goodhearted person? Well, English dictionary defines
one as a kind, caring and generous person. It’s said that when you have a
good heart – you help too much, your trust too much, you give too much, you
love too much and finally it always seems you hurt the most. I would like
to add kind, helpful, caring, understanding, patient, and loving are some
of the words that come to my mind when asked to list the qualities of a
goodhearted person.
Well, the good hearted person that I am indicating here is none other my
childhood and family friend MLA Mr Francis De Souza. A genuinely good
hearted person who is simple, truthful, soft-spoken, humble, does not step
on other people to get ahead. He is a man of humble beginnings who is
known by all whether they are rich or poor, young or old as he basically
has a charisma to interact with others which is a God given unique trait to
him. He touched many people, and the outpouring of affection from his
friends is incredible. Nevertheless, he treats people with dignity, and
appreciates the goodness in them. His life is of great faith and
generosity, a life of service to others, a life of simple joys.
To me, personally Francis is “un grand bonhomme” or rather an incredible
persona - who lives a full life, a successful life, mostly a happy life,
without any regrets. He is a man of iron will and a man of unshakable
dignity. He is a man of impeccable intuition; always a leader and yet a
constant servant to his love for his family and friends. He does not have
an unkind bone in his body. He believes that if you're on this earth, you
better live it well with all sincerity. It’s incredible to say that inspite
of whatever may come over him; he is always cheerful and witty and above
all never talks ill of others, even about those who might have hurt him in
one way or the other. People change and it’s often scary, as despite being
a political figure, he maintains his friendship with one and all.
His great achievements build a monument which shall endure until the sun
grows cold. Apparently, many a times being a good hearted person seems like
the worst possible thing to be, almost as if it’s a trait that works
completely against you.
However, being a good person does not always depend on your religion,
status in life, culture or political views. I believe it depends on how
good you treat others that shows your true character. In today’s world our
huge problem that we face is others taking advantage of a good hearted
person. But, let this not get to you ever, instead, let it be a lesson to
realise that not everyone will truly appreciate your kindness. One of his
beliefs in life is the importance of being authentic with people, and this
is exactly Francis’s trait saying what needs to be said nothing more or
nothing less at the most appropriate time. Unfortunately, his health is
not so good at the moment and we need to pray instead of being insensitive
to his ailment. He is a great man - he always will be to me.

[Goanet] Why Kerala Church is facing a crisis?

2018-09-25 Thread Devak Argham
Forwarded...

Anyone who understand the Christianity in Kerala, and the way the
faith rooted and spread in the soil, will understand why the enemies
within and outside the Church bend on destroying the faith. Once upon
a time the Europeans came to India and spread the Christian faith
among people. Later on Kerala became the stronghold of missionaries
not only in India but also to the whole world. The Church in Kerala
has given us models of faith, great Saints, Blesseds, Martyrs of faith
and Servants of God.

This also is the cause of the problems of Kerala Church. The enemies
of Christianity from within and outside cannot digest the faith and
dedicated commitment of Christianity. So somehow, they are targeting
the Church from all corners now.

I think vocation to Priesthood and religious life as brothers and
sisters are the target from the enemies. They know the Church thrives
because of the committed vocation to religious and priestly life. So
targeting them will prevent vocation. The media and the fanatic
organisations are on the lookout for a slightest mistake of one person
within to target the entire faith. Governmental machinery is used to
target the faithful and the hierarchy to create a wedge between them.

Look at the number of Holy people gone ahead of us from Kerala. I
think the enemies are scared of the deep rooted faith and faith
formation of people there.

I am not surprised the maligning of vocation to priesthood and
religious life that is going on in KeralaBecause Kerala has many
Saints and models of faith through religious life targeting religious
life and potraying it negatively is the handiwork of the enemies, of
course, from inside and outside. In fact it will increase only in the
coming days. The Church people must realise this and do not allow to
be a prey in the hands of the enemies.

Within the Church it is a call for all of us to turn towards God more
earnestly and witness truly our Christian call. Correct the mistakes
and focus on Jesus. Unitedly we must face the external enemies by our
good faith, forgiveness, humility, patience, gentleness and spreading
the goodness through our lives. By God’s grace the faith will increase
and the enemies will be scattered. God bless the Church!

[Goanet] Why did the Marathas never overthrow the Portuguese in Goa? (Quora)

2018-09-25 Thread Goanet Reader
A DEBATE FROM QUORA:

Why did the Marathas never overthrow the Portuguese in Goa?

Akshar Prabhu Desai
Answered Dec 31, 2015

There are a number of reasons for the same as outlined in the
book "Hindoos of Goa" by Justice António Floriano de Noronha
(1873-1931).

The book was published in 1923 and described in great details
the Portuguese perspective on India/Goa and dwelled a lot on
Marathi-Portuguese relationship. Given that this is written
by a post-liberalization Portuguese judge, it is likely to be
much more unbiased.

  1. Pacts. Shivaji's father Shahaji made a
not-so-formal pact with Portuguese. When Shivaji
was yet to become the force he was, Shahaji had
already suspected that his family might run into
trouble. As per the pact, Shahaji would let
Portuguese mind their own business and in return
Portuguese would take a neutral stand in future
conflict and give shelter to Shahaji's family.

2. Reliability of trade. Portuguese had a natural port of
Vasco in Goa. They hoped to buy stuff from surrounding
regions and then export it to other parts of the world.
However, Maratha forces were at a constant war in nearby areas
which lowered the productivity of the region. Portuguese
hoped for peace and made whatever concessions Marathi forces
asked for.

3. Concessions. Maratha forces and traders affiliated with
Shivaji's empire had access to all the trade routes that
passed through Goa. In certain cases without any tax and for
most cases with much lower tax.

4. Geography. While for most people today Goa is about
beaches and party; Goa of olden times was mostly a tribal
region with several islands, rivers and rampant with
dangerous wildlife as well as mercenaries. It is always hard
to launch a campaign in a region like that especially when
there is nothing of significance to gain.

Sambhaji's almost-successful campaign in Goa also ended as he
got stuck in a flood and eventually had to be saved by his
bodyguard.

Conclusion: I think for most of the time Portuguese
simply ensured that they pretend to be the friends
of Marathas. That worked in their favor. Goa was
not really a territory Marathas valued which is the
  second reason.

There is, however, an interesting exchange of letters between
the Goa Governor and Portuguese King. The governor claims
that he can simply run over the Marathi forces because the
Marathi forces seemed like rag-tag malnourished warriors who
did not have proper uniform, discipline, healthy horses and
did not eat pigs. The King reprimands him saying his primary
job is conversion and spreading the love to true God among
the barbarians and conquest of territory should come second.

It later turns out that he fails at both. The conversions see
some strong resistance from the locals. Also, the governor
loses badly all the small battles he had to fight with local
marathi forces. his successor writes that while these
soldiers appear to be malnourished are in fact capable of
traveling and fighting without food for several days, while
they are barefoot they travel in small groups at much faster
pace and never face an army in open battle but totally rely
on surprise attacks and tactical movements.

While the question is about the Portuguese, this is

That was why, he initially went along a proposed friendship
