Re: [Goanet] Sad news: Dr Teotonio R de Souza is no more...

2019-02-20 Thread Eugene Correia
Shocked to have lost one of my good friends and inspiration to learn about
Goa history. Ever since I first met him at the XCHR when it was first
established at Mira Mar and then often at the XCHR after met him whenever I
visited Goa from Bombay.
It was at the Jesuit Retreat House in the late 70s where he was conducting
a retreat for Jesuits are friendship grew stronger. I was there at the
Retreat House as I was invited by the Fr. Antonio Pereira who was in charge
of the house.
I and Fr. Teo sat on the parapet early mornings and talked for long time
with the waves breaking on the rocks down below. i was not taking part in
the retreat but was just a guest of Fr. Pereira and I was not aware that
there was a Retreat on.
I also met Fathers from Xavier's College in Mumbai. We went swimming in the
cool waters in the swimming.
The last time I met Prof. Teo was in Lisbon when I was visiting Portugal
about seven years ago. He invited me to lunch at the University he was
teaching and gave me tips on where to visit historical places and museums.
He told me to do Oral histories of Goans who witnessed the Liberation and
post-colonial Goa. He offered to be my guide for Ph.D but I was turned down
by the Goa University for being a Canadian and that I need to come through
a reference from one of the Canadian universities.
He said he posted to me his last book of essays but I didn't get it in mail
in Canada. I have his other books. In a way he was a rebel, and he had his
own problems with the Church authorities.
He left the priest hood, married and ultimately settled in Portugal. A
kindred soul, indeed.
Dr. Teo has left a big mark on the historical writing in Goa and the XCHR
will forever stand to his memory and dedication. He told me how he got the
idea and then approached Fr. Saldanha to give him the land from the family
property. Today, it's go-to place for students from all over the world.
Tears well up in my years, for I know that I will miss his writings. It was
joy to read him and also to increase one's knowledge. I hope the Goa
University starts a scholarships in his name.
Goodbye dear Teo, my world will be much poorer without you. You
occasionally emails used to make me happy.
RIP, Teo

[Goanet] You know you are a Goan born in the 1970s or 1980s or 1990s, if...

2019-02-20 Thread Goanet Reader
You know you are a Goan born in the 1970s or 1980s or 1990s,
if you can relate to any or all of the following:
(Compiled by Sebastian Noronha)

1) *Rice = KoKo
   *Fish = MeMe
   *Beef = Maashu
   *Chicken = KokKok Maashu
   *Pork = Piggy Maashu

2) Getting a remark in school was as bad as getting
charge-sheeted by the law.

  3) You have at least one scar on either of your
knees, or on the shin, or on the elbow, or on the
chin. If you have scars on all the above mentioned
places then during your childhood your probably
were a rock star amongst your group.

4) The funniest joke you may have heard and cracked was
asking someone to say "What" and replying by saying "B**kant
Bot".

5) Owning a colour television was no less than like owning an
Audi Q7. And a VCR was like the Bugatti Veyron.

6) "Playing with girls" meant playing real games like Catch
'n Cook or Hide 'n Seek, or even soccer. It never meant
playing with their emotions.

  7) Jealousies were generally because the other boy
is wearing a better pair of football studs. Fights
and rivalries were because of simple things like
  "he touched my bicycle".

8) Showing up in class with a "phoren" pencil case made you
the most-talked-about and popular guy or girl in school.

9) If your father was a sea-farer you referred to it as "my
daddy is working on the boat", never the ship.

10) All chocolates and candies were known as 'Cadbury'.

11) Your time-pass was collecting Gold Spot bottle caps in
view of winning The Jungle Book.

12) Any alcohol was called "Kuttu".

13) The only cola drink you knew of was Top-Cola.

14) "Hanging around" meant, well... hanging around just like
that was never a thing. There was always something
interesting to do.

15) Adventure sports were riding the bicycle to the nearest
hillock in search of cashew nuts, kaandam, chiuram, and other
seasonal wild fruits.

  16) Having a boyfriend or girlfriend meant being
"friendly". And being friendly was only limited to
standing at such an angle at mass from where you
could see each other and blush. Holding or even
touching hands was way advanced, and sacrilegiously
  orgasmic.

17) There were no formal greetings like Good Morning, Good
Afternoon, etc. Okay, Good Morning was there, but:

*Good Day = Nistem kitem ghetlam aiz?
   *Good Afternoon = Jeulim?
   *Good Evening = Chau pielim?

18) Food was compulsorily rice and curry. Eating anything
else,no matter how wholesome and healthy, just didn’t cut it.

20) Seeing a kissing scene on TV, especially in the presence
of your parents, was scandalous and made you feel impure.

21) *Saturday meant Chayageet.
*Sunday meant Chitrahaar, movie, Famous Five, and
 Baabaji Ka Bioscope.
*Night entertainment was Hum Log and Nukkad.

22) Tinkle and Chandamama were your unofficial text-books and
encyclopedias.

23) Reading Archie comics meant you were "spoiling your
English".

24) Writing with a ball-point pen in school was almost a
punishable offense.

25) Running-hand writing was the only correct way to write.

[Goanet] Publicity for Pakistan

2019-02-20 Thread Nelson Lopes
Publicity for Pakistan

What did India achieve by broadcasting and repeating P.M Immran
Khan’s,the whole episode live five days after the incident? It is what
exactly they wanted and we have obliged them .No sympathy, threats of
retaliation and proof credible evidence with assurance for action is an
old, tried and tested script of denial .Then again the interview of
Musharaf was no better, repeating ignorance and support to his country.
Nothing new, except lamenting that Azar was the one who tried to
eliminate him in an unsuccessful suicide attempt and no action against him.
He also defended the strong position of his army and self tactical
withdrawal during Kargil war. He asserted that Uri and Kargil will be
repeated, if Kashmir is not resolved. It is true he said that JEM is
supported by people to help suffering Kashmiris. And not by state or army,
which is a misconception misconceived. He was angered by division of East
Pakistan by Indian forces of liberation and hence revenge by this proxy war
is justified. Such broadcasts do not take us forward ad on the contrary
weaken our stand of firmness. The war or retaliatory steps must be taken in
war rooms not in TV studios. Musaraf countered support of USA and other
Nations, including Saudi Arabia and Iran support by justaposing against
China their all weather ally, thwarting every move by India against M Azar.
These old organizations are operating openly in Pakistan covertly
protected and guided by ISI. The promise of not allowing Pakistan soil to
terrorist is a exploded myth. Clinton had said that rearing snakes in the
backyard to bite neigbours is a wrong presumption for Pakistan to cry over
terrorist menance to themselves as victims to

Credible evidence has been provided on Mumbai attack, Patankot even
permitting ISI presence in a highly sensitive base, but not reciprocal
access to us. Pakistan has denied surgical strikes like all other issues of
Dawood Ibrahim. If Osama Bin Laden could live undetected in a garrison
cantonment area under denial by Musaraf, how can Pakistan be ever believed
with seriousness? The hot and cold relations are a bane of our leaders.
Time will come to pass when this horrific incident and human loss will be
frozen in cold storage. The action of withdrawing MFNT status is pho phoed
by Pakistan as non issue. The withdrawal of security to separatists
leaders after 20 years with solidarity, sympathy across borders and with
insurgents is too late For all that we may know such private security will
b provided by our adversaries from across . The talks with such leaders
spewing venom is misplaced. The elimination of the mastermind is supposed
to be the best action of swift retaliation at present. The end to talks has
been switched off and on during last several decades. Pakistan is daring us
to retaliate and bear the consequences. Our soft approach by being self
invited has backfired at diplomatic levels .Pakistan has not refrained from
openly advocating help to Kashmiris to achieve freedom on the contrary
announced all support.

India must fight its own battle and take steps with calculated risks and
consequences involved, See how Israel as a Nation survives against all
hostilities and swift retaliation against world opinion even

*Dear Frederick”*

Notwithstanding that both the citations you referred to were termed

The Indian Diaspora is a monumental undertaking and is complicated. When
the topic of Goans/Indians is raised in the British Parliament, Germany
South Africa (Gupta and Corruption)

I want to confine myself to our Goaness and Diaspora for several
reasons.These are::

1)I know that my Grandfather and Greatgrandfather were
Christians…..but where did they come from, were they Hindus or Muslims. Was
that fellow called “Augustine” taling advantage of the amnesty declared by
the Portuguese which even allowed criminals to settle in Nova Conquesta
(??)

2) Why was Quepem chosen by Deao Almeida with the churchreally
remarkable fellow ….his palace is a Heritage, Connected. he built the
Church, the school and even the market place. Accidently in 2006 while just
curious about the alter, I found that there was an even older alter …made
of clay and the church had a mud floor until my parents decided that they
would tile it.

3) The house that my parents purchased was actually built by a Hindu
family, and became the house of the Judge. The walls of the house are about
a metre wide built of clay lime mixture,, the height of the house nearly
30 metres, the roof was of tiles and monkeys and white ants were ready to
bring down the entire edific

4) Every trip to Margoa I visted the Emporium my haooksul was nearly
30 books 2 of the prized books were Sita Valles….. Saint Joseph Vaz My
interest in Mozambique and Angola …actually made me realize how lucky and
protected I have been

5) A visit to the Quepem College …History Department made me realize
how much local knowledge and culture matters…

6) There is something special about Goans …..so I wonder when will a
Goan win a Nobel (Maybe Noble) Prize in Literature, will we get a Goan
Pope?…Goans Have done a lot for Peace &

The soldiers who were martyred will not be forgotten but how will they will be
remembered Those who guard the Nation are unguarded

not on borders or at wars but on roads at peace time
The grateful Nation reacts Peace and candle marches, protest at embassies,
solidarity meetings, speeches by politicians at funerals, few visits of
condolences at residences, debates on TV and the poor soldier is at best laid
to rest with gun salutes and floral bedecked coffins There will be promises
galore to avenge after Kargil, Uri, Patankar, Bombay blast and various
incidents of gruesome brutality The emotion and its intent are drowned with
time That is how a grateful Nation pays its dues and respects

At weddings birthday parties we express our love and affection with gifts in
cash and kind At funerals with loads of wreaths andbouquets
An exercise at hospital were a fixed sum is charged per visit which is deducted
from hospital expense and donations at funeral towards such expenses These are
customs prevalent among some communities offering concrete support not just lip
sympathy
Our shocked patriots can contribute to specific fund and thus gesture of
concern is much more elevating from distress of shock
Some states vie with each other and offer cash but often never reaches. So also
legitimate dues take years to be disbursed. All the martyrs must receive equal
recognition because their services are for the entire Nation not just for State
they come from Not all the 15 states of India have announced Ex gratia amount
and this is discrimination as per region
The dues must reach the families within 7 days or even before cremation to show
the Nation Concern Act fast not talk fast and forget as the pain is not

Surgical strikes are political propaganda which is denied by Pakistan Action

Our Agriculture Minister Vijay Sardesai has announced the promotion of
tender coconuts in a big way for Goa. In some countries, there are
soft drinks available which contain vitamins, especially vitamins c,
fiber, and other goodies. We can promote the coconut tree, especially
the tender coconut water everywhere in Goa. A nice touch in the land

related to the tree and fruit. No way should increased FAR be given to

more coconut trees than a coconut grove.

Goa's coconut culture is in the limelight, and fast forward. It looks

On other issues, I reserve my opinion. A step forward is good; please,

special privileges, the logic of which escapes every bona fide Goenkar
except a bondo. Somehow every politician in Goa wants to bring in the
builder through the backdoor. Beware! Next our IT Parks soon will have
more coconut trees than a coconut grove.

Goa's coconut culture is in the limelight, and fast forward. It looks
like the Goa Forward Party is on the right foot and taking our state
in the right direction - on this issue.

On other issues, I reserve my opinion. A step forward is good; please,
however, don't take two steps backward after this!

A Konkani wedding favourite by Tanya and Andre.

The darkness of a completely quiet night, a drink resting on the balcao edge
and fireflies to add to the ambience.

Only experienced in an off-the-beaten-track Goan village.

Well sung by Zeena Pereira.

A reprise from my previous post a long time ago perhaps, but worth hearing
again.
