Re: [Goanet] Brexit
GL, The residents of Britain have voted to leave the UK. Their PM has proven to be an utter disgrace, unable to come up with a deal before the exit day. I never thought I would live long enough to see the final nail in the British Empire’s coffin but that nail will be hammered in before the end of the month. If you enjoy British humor, here is how a Brit explains the situation: ‘The other day my mate was making me a cup of tea and he said ‘Would you like the bag leaving in or taken out? If you leave the bag in, the whole cup of tea itself would get stronger, and it might appear that the bag is getting weaker, but it is part of a stronger cup of tea. Whereas if you take the bag out, the tea’s now weak, but the bag itself goes directly into the bin.’ - James Acaster. The same problem will strangle Goa if it decides to leave the Indian union. [Goanet] Brexit
The British parliament for the second time voted down Prime Minster Theresa May's proposal for BREXIT. I think it is time for the politicians to go back to the populace for a referendum on BREXITl. Now all and sundry are more educated about the personal and economic impact of BREXIT. Clearly today's residents and their children and grandchildren will be impacted by the decision. Since the last BREXIT vote two years ago, much of the financial centers have left London and many auto companies have put the UK govt on notice of their impending departure from the UK; now that these companies do not have access to the European consumer market that the EU membership offered. The English are not the only people concerned about the foreigners. Because of the "bhaile", the Americans elected Trump and are now paying the price. Let us hope a the next election 18 months form now, we can get a do-over of past bad decisions. Regards, GL
[Goanet] Who's Coming to Dinner?
I'm a foodie when elections swing around the corner. It is good news for people who like to eat. And, drink! A couple of my friends are making up their own menus for when the politician comes a-knocking at their doors. They will present him or her a menu which is unique, customized and to the voter's liking! They want to eat, drink, and make merry! What exactly is the menu - food and drinks - is a closely guarded secret which no doubt is safe from surgical strikes. If they can do it I will also give it a try; however, I'll share my menu with the world. It is a simple menu. Others can also enjoy my dinner menu or even better design their own dinner menus for when the politician arrives at the doorstep. Don't be shy! Who knows, it might become a fad and end up as a tradition in Goa. We have a lot, and one more tradition, wouldn't raise half-an-eyebrow. I will inform the politician how important it is for me to have a menu which will improve my health, and a brew which will enliven my spirit. For me, good health is as important as delicious food for my taste buds, and it also has to be easy on the eyes. No need to give me a TV set as I do not watch television, and I already have a washing machine and refrigerator. I'd love to receive a Harley Davidson but back to reality! Now, what's for dinner? Maybe beetroot soup. It is subtle and is the color of blood which is significant as selling my vote and soul can be a painful experience. >From beetroot soup I would like to go for starters, maybe something which looks yellow to brighten my day. Am I hinting, am I telling the public to vote for the BJP Party or am I going to vote for the Party? Let's say the starter is a teaser - something to get me going! Maybe, some garbanzo beans which have a delicate light yellow color. Fish is good for the brain, and so I'll have a generous serving of it for the entree of my voting day dinner. My favorite is shark as this fish has lovely teeth which is immensely symbolic. After all, I'm going to give my vote away and it is no laughing matter. Maybe, a good cry would be better. I always insist on grilled shark with all the teeth on display. A lovely commercial for a dentist. As I eat I will imagine I am the star of Hemingway's Old Man and the Sea. Or even the hunter in Moby Dick who relentlessly hunts the great sperm whale which is a heavy and bulky book but equally good as food for thought. You see, eating for me includes all five senses - and the brain. I refuse to eat the last, though. No oil, please, as the shark has more than enough for me. I need a long dish to display the shark, and some mashed Italian blood tomatoes to add a bit of realism as well as a few cut-into-small-pieces of fresh lady fingers for macabre effect. Enter Dracula, please. No, just kidding. All said and done, a couple of healthy salads later, it is time for a dessert which will be an Afonso mango. I will then drink some black tea and it will have to be Goan rose tea which is by any other name always the finest flavor tea. As any housewife will tell you, it is important to get good materials if you want a tasty and delicious meal. And so I will go to Margao - the big city - to shop at Big G and await the knock on the door by the politician. P.S. My Swiss friend informs me how lucky we are as politicians in Switzerland make a lot of promises which they do not honor and unlike Goan and Indian politicians do not give them delicious biriyani or spicy sorpotel or made-in-Goa sausages. How lucky you are! he says. I reflect on his remark and am reminded of how Switzerland has one of the highest standard of living in the world. I do not say anything. I have already lost my appetite. Will I have to pay for several years for my special voter's dinner?
[Goanet] A Time To Mourn??
Eddie wrote: Roland, let the white Canadians mourn the loss of the Churches. Why should you be concerned? The Catholic Church is not really ours, it is European in liturgy, doctrine and issues highlighted.--- Folks,The Catholic church was firmly established here in south Texas when German immigrants started arriving in the 1840s. The immigrants built German styled churches so that they could conduct services in German - or so the brochures to these churches say. The Catholic churches in the area that served the Hispanic population did offer one mass a week in German but it is so much better to have your own home - or so I am told. On a different continent, the Moravian Church in Tanzania has a million followers. The total number of followers in Europe - where it originated - is less than 25,000. [Goanet] Sentinels Save Police Face on www.goanspirit.com
Sentinels Save Police Face Because lucrative business it definitely is. On February 27, 2019 the government sanctioned Rs 25,89,000 to pay 86 traffic sentinels. Approval was also given for Rs 11,92,000 to pay 47 sentinels that was owed to them. Up to October 2018, over Rs 40,00,00 was paid to our heroes, with one sentinel earning a whopping Rs 8,60,000. So, basically as a tax payer I am underwriting the traffic cop’s salary as well as paying the sentinel for doing the cop’s job!'' .So, do these sentinels really have ethics or, are they just mercenaries? Are they themselves above board? I seriously doubt it. Would a sentinel report a family member, relative or friend to the police? No way. Has one sentinel reported another’s wrongdoing? Possibly, but the police wouldn’t tell us. -- *When you talk, you are only repeating what you already know.
