CLOSE ENCOUNTERS
OF POLITICAL KIND

Stephen Dias, Dona Paula

With a very tight contest in the offing, Shiv Sena's summer of discontent
with the BJP could change the political equation if the Shiv Sena manages a
good showing in Maharashtra and decides to support the UPA at the Centre.
Also in Tamil Nadu, if Congress-DMK alliance wins a majority, an upset
looks likely on the cards. Though Orissa is not in the limelight, the
results in the state could play a significant role in government formation.
Crucial also will be the outcome of the 25 seats in the North Eastern
states. The outcome of these elections will be a reflection of prevailing
circumstances in the country in particular the high unemployment rate, the
dissatisfaction of the farmers and the way the women perceive their having
been given their due by the NDA government. Congress' manifesto promises of
a sustainable Rs. 6,000/- per month for the 20 percent of the poorest of
poor will be another bonanza for the party as such social welfare measures
have worked marvels in other countries.END

[Goanet] NO TO DYNASTY POLITRIKS

2019-04-17 Thread Aires Rodrigues
We should congratulate and commend all those BJP workers including some
Senior party leaders who were outraged at the dynasty politics in Mapusa
and are now silently working to ensure the thumping victory of the Congress
candidate Sudhir Kandolkar, who has an outstanding record of many years of
community service.

Like in Mapusa we need to strongly oppose the utterly raw novice Utpal
Parrikar who is also trying to sneak in while the BJP is shamelessly
promoting family Raj in Panaji.

Panaji has suffered for over two decades due to Manohar Parrikar’s sheer
neglect of the capital city which has been rotting and sinking. We cannot
further experiment on ‘political apprentices’ like Utpal who may take years
to learn the fundamentals of politics and legislating good laws. As a
result, he will be manipulated like a puppet on a string to blindly carry
on his late father’s failed and discredited policies leading to further
corruption and stagnation, chaos and neglect to our great city of Panaji.

Those with no community service should be consigned to the racks. We need
knowledgeable persons with a good track record in public life to be our
elected representatives. BJP needs to Walk the Talk and look beyond the
Parivar.

[Goanet] Indian Heritage Maintenance Efficiency

2019-04-17 Thread Roland Francis
This was raw humour indeed.

While part of Notre Dame was lost to fire, Indian monuments are just lost to
encroachment and negligence.

Why let fire do it for you when laziness has the same result.

From the TOI:

Lost heritage: India doesn't need to worry about a fire to destroy its heritage
— that 'onerous' task is taken care of through encroachments which have
resulted in the disappearance of several monuments. Worse, the Archaeological
Survey of India (ASI), the sole guardian of the country's heritage, doesn't
have the foggiest idea of how many monuments it has lost. While the ASI puts
the number of missing monuments at 35, a CAG report back in 2014 had already
listed 92 monuments as ‘missing’, aka, destroyed. The CAG report had only
surveyed 1,655 ASI protected monuments, the total number for which stands at
close to 3,700.

Re: [Goanet] Goa priest apologises for remarks against PM, Shah, Parrikar

2019-04-17 Thread Rajan Parrikar
I just saw this thread on my very occasional foray into Goanet. I haven't
been following the Indian election but this episode is concerning for
reasons quite different than those expressed here.

To me, it is a matter of fundamental freedom of expression. And it is a
reminder of why America is the greatest nation on the planet - because it
has the First Amendment.

The Indian government should have no business reprimanding a priest - a
private citizen - for expressing political views within the precincts of
the church or elsewhere. Whether it is appropriate or not should solely be
a matter between his flock and the Church management.

Note: I am not commenting on the content of his speech. I just support his
right to express his views without the government bearing down on him.

Nostalgia is a necessary thing, I believe, and a way for all of us to find
peace in that which we have accomplished, or even failed to accomplish. At the
same time, if nostalgia precipitates actions to return to that fabled,
rosy-painted time, particularly in one who believes his life to be a failure,
then it is an empty thing, doomed to produce nothing but frustration and an
even greater sense of failure.

What is the significance of the triumphal entry?

The triumphal entry is that of Jesus coming into Jerusalem on what we know as
Palm Sunday https://www.gotquestions.org/Palm-Sunday.html , the Sunday before
the crucifixion (John 12:1 https://biblia.com/bible/esv/John%2012.1 , 12
https://biblia.com/bible/esv/John%2012.12 ). The story of the triumphal entry
is one of the few incidents in the life of Jesus which appears in all four
Gospel accounts (Matthew 21:1-17 https://biblia.com/bible/esv/Matt%2021.1-17 ;
Mark 11:1-11 https://biblia.com/bible/esv/Mark%2011.1-11 ; Luke 19:29-40
https://biblia.com/bible/esv/Luke%2019.29-40 ; John 12:12-19
https://biblia.com/bible/esv/John%2012.12-19 ). Putting the four accounts
together, it becomes clear that the triumphal entry was a significant event,
not only to the people of Jesus’ day, but to Christians throughout history. We
celebrate Palm Sunday to remember that momentous occasion.

As a child, I might have visited Miguel Colaco’s Christ Ashram in Nuvem. It was
after all, within walking distance from the Mae Dos Pobros Church, and it was
not at all unusual for Catholics in Nuvem, after mass, to drop in at the
ashram. I have a recollection of a blue sky, people crawling on all fours,
sweeping the earth with their hair, and supplicating in other grotesque

created in my mind by the many stories told to me, for the ashram and its
paradoxes were an enigma and a constant talking point in the village of Nuvem.
Robert S. Newman, the American anthropologist, who has spent many years
studying Goa in its various transformations, has recently released two volumes
of his anthropological papers, which delve into aspects of Goa’s mythologies.
Newman is a much respected academic, who first visited India in the 1960s, as
part of the American Peace Corps, when still in the bloom of Kennedy-era
idealism, Americans sought to engage with the world through learning new
cultures. In the volume titled, Goan Anthropology: Festivals, Films and Fish
(Goa 1556, 2019), Newman now fills the gaps in my porous memory about Christ
Ashram.

From: E DeSousa Comment:
Here in Michigan we get a wide variety of mangoes imported from Mexico and Peru
and even from Brasil. But the wonderful Goan mango varieties are nowhere to be
found. Perhaps the South American countries did not have access to the Jesuit
mango expertise.-GL responds:
More likely, all of Goa's mangoes which are exported are consumed in the
Mid-East and Europe; with very little left for the American market.
If you want to see Goan mangoes in the USA, beg the Goans to grow more mangoes
and may be eat less of them.  Of course the native Goans could care less about
being bribed with dollars.

[Goanet] TO CRUSH THE BJP, VOTING FOR THE CONGRESS IS THE ONLY WAY FORWARD

2019-04-17 Thread Aires Rodrigues
After witnessing the horrific agony faced by our country over the last five
years, only somebody very senile and off his rockers would ever vote for
the very divisive BJP.

Under Narendra Modi, the Election Commission of India has lost its
independence, the Reserve Bank its autonomy while the CBI has become
Narendra Modi’s weapon to harass his political opponents. Freedom of Press
has gone for a toss with Modi and Amit Shah today controlling most of the
electronic and print media. Less said the better on how Narendra Modi is
now trying to control the Judiciary.

A corrupt Modi-fication by stealth destroying everything that was good.
Never forget the disastrous de-monetization policy that benefited only a
privileged few that Modi corruptly took in his confidence but was a
disaster for the many and the country. Professor Raghuram Rajan, the then
independent Governor of the Reserve Bank of India during the demonetization
process and an internationally recognized eminent banker and economist was
hounded out of office less than two months before its implementation. The
Reserve Bank’s advice was ignored which led to chaos, hardships and
monetary paralysis. Rajan was proved right and Modi was wrong. Time to end
this injustice.

India is at peril under a state of undeclared Emergency. Narendra Modi is
India‘s only Prime Minister who has never held a Press Conference but
merrily travelled to every corner of the world while burdening the
tax-payers. He has left his carbon footprints everywhere helping to destroy
the environment but the greater damage has been on the down trodden people
and institutions of India.

India needs to get rid of the BJP by voting for the Congress. In Goa let us
face the ground reality and not waste our precious votes on AAP, as it
would only work to the benefit of the BJP. The time has come to draw a line
in the sand and make sure everyone Votes for a better future, less corrupt,
less chaotic and less vindictive by Voting for Congress. A vote for any
other party is a wasted or destructive vote.

Re: [Goanet] Goa priest apologises for remarks against PM, Shah, Parrikar

2019-04-17 Thread George Pinto
One point:
The priest is supposedly speaking for God as to the punishment meted out to the
late Chief Minister. I prefer when God speaks for herself rather through
intermediaries in the various religion.
