[Goanet] Serengeti in North America

2019-06-29 Thread Gilbert Lawrence
Serengeti in North America
Serengeti is usually associated with East Africa; when millions of four-legged
hoofed wildlife make their biologically-driven trek across great distances in
the Mara, which is spread over Kenya nd Tanzania. The migration is timed to
the rainy season and the grazing conditions.
In North America, not far from my home we have a similar phenomenon.  This does
not involve hoofed animals but wide-spanned winged birds returning form their
winter homes in the south to their northern artic / sub-artic summer residence.
One will need to bring-out one's maps to follow this story - the annual
flight and migration of the Canada Geese also called the Snow Geese. Their
migration path and their rest-stop is called the Seneca Serengeti.
The Snow Geese spend their winter in the Chesapeake Bay, along the north-east
coast of America.  Come spring, they fly up north to their home in the Hudson
Bay, Canada; where they lay their eggs and raise their family.  The straight
flight-path of these birds is over the Finger Lakes of New York. These lakes
are eleven in number, all shaped as the fingers of the hand.  Of all the lakes,
two are popular with the birds on their way north - Cayuga and Seneca; located
just south of Interstate 90 and just west of Syracuse.   The lakes are 250
miles from the north shore of the Chesapeake Bay; after which the birds have
another third of their flight distance to Hudson Bay.
In March of each year, the birds start arriving at Seneca Lake for a brief
respite, to rest and feed. Their departure-time from the lake is dependent on
the weather, wind and snow conditions.  Hence the flock rafting and feeding
along the lakes and in the nearby fields varies from 300 thousand to a million.
Observing  theses birds arrive and take-off is a sight-and-sound to behold and
an experience of a lifetime.
After hunters nearly wiped out the Canadian geese about 100 years ago,
conservation efforts - banning of hunting and increasing the feeding areas on
their flight path has permitted the birds to multiply in number.  Now the birds
have an opposite effect on nature, with the tundra of their summer grounds
negatively affected.   The Finger Lakes are left-overs of glaciers and are
surrounded by special soil that grow a variety of grapes.  So dotting along the
Finger Lakes are a number of wineries; that welcome tourists for some wine
tasting experience.  Just to clarify, the birds do not participate in the wine
tasting; though they may fertilize the vineyards.
There are many migratory bird species that come south from Canada for the
winter.  Similar there are other species of birds, including the humming birds,
that come-up north from Mexico during summer.
Regards,  GL

[Goanet] Mining has impacted Bicholim, Mandovi rivers: Study

Finds Bicholim river to be strongly polluted, while Mandovi to be
moderately polluted

PANJIM: Iron ore mining activities have had a considerable impact on the
Bicholim and Mandovi river sediments, which in turn affect the ecology of
bottom-dwelling organism. Mining activities, which are under suspension for
the last 15 months, can also influence the concentration of metals in the
Zuari estuary.

This was revealed in a study conducted by Cynthia Gaonkar and Vishnu Matta
of the department of Marine Science of Goa University.

In a two different studies conducted, they have assessed the impact of past
iron ore mining on the sediment cores of rivers of Goa, and impact of
mining on metal concentration in waters of the Zuari estuary.

In the first study, which has been published in the ‘Research Journal of
Environmental and Earth Sciences’, the researchers said that to assess the
long-term contamination history of pollutants due to intense mining
activities in the adjoining areas of rivers of northern Goa, sediment core
samples were collected from three rivers, Bicholim, Mandovi and Tiracol.

The sediments were analysed for texture, Organic Carbon (OC), major
elements (Fe, Al, Ca and Mg) and trace metals (Mn, Cu, Zn, Pb, Ni and Cr).
“Depositional environment of the cores was assessed based on the colour and
the distribution of OC. Environmental parameters such as contamination
factor, geo accumulation, enrichment factor and pollution load index were
used to assess the extent of pollution,” the study mentioned.

In addition, correlation coefficients were calculated to understand their
relationships among the major elements and trace metals and their sources.
“The study revealed that the Bicholim river is strongly polluted with iron
and manganese (Fe & Mn) and moderately polluted with lead (Pb) and Chromium
(Cr),” the study revealed.

“Whereas, the Mandovi river is moderately polluted with Mn and Pb. On the
other hand, Tiracol River (though unpolluted in the past) is getting
polluted with Copper (Cu) and Cr during recent years because of human
interference,” it added.

“The results indicate that mining has a considerable impact on the Bicholim
and Mandovi river sediments which in turn affect the ecology of
bottom-dwelling organisms,” the study concluded.

As far as the Zuari estuary is concerned, the study exemplified that
concentrations of trace metals in waters of the Zuari estuary were
significantly less when compared to the periods of rampant mining activity
around Goa, indicating that mining can influence the concentration of
metals in the Zuari estuary.
