[Goanet] STUDENT ACTIVISM IN GOA NEEDS TO BE REKINDLED

2020-01-19 Thread Aires Rodrigues
Student activism encompasses student involvement in issues dealing with
economic, environmental, political and social change on and off the campus.

Having been closely associated with the very vibrant student movements in
Goa witnessed in the 70’s and 80’s, it is extremely anguishing and very
disheartening that the student activism today is virtually nonexistent in
the State. In our days students were known for having strong opinions and
expressing them without fear. We demonstrated to the government that
student power was a force to reckon with.

Maybe, it is now time that the students in Goa find their voice once again.
Today the social media is a very handy tool to expand the scope and
strength of student activism. Students need to be the voice of the
voiceless and through a well organized networked Student activism it must
be a signal for democracy and justice.

With Goa currently in dire straits soaked in rampant corruption and bad
Governance, the Student activism could peacefully and democratically
cause a political, environmental, economic and much needed social change
that Goa so desperately requires.

[Goanet] GOANET: CM Sawant blames Nehru for not liberating Goa years earlier.

2020-01-19 Thread Stephen Dias
This article has reference to Veronica Fernandes's 8 article appeared in
section of press.
Those who have seen Portuguese era in Goa will definitely understand what i
am seeing. If Goa was not invaded in 19th December 1961 we would have been
until now happiest people than any other state of India.
I have lived in Goa all my childhood as i have turned in this August 2019,
75 years of age. Goans those who lived during Portuguese regime would know
the difference between Indians and Portuguese.
We used to sleep with doors and windows open without even thinking that our
houses would rob by thieves because those days we did not have thieves
compared to now. People were sincere and happy go lucky. Surely Goans never
taught we would be liberated but some few selfish elements as they are
called Sathyagra who were instigated to conquer Goa and hence invasion took
place which Goans were never expected. Article by Veronica is enclosed
here for the readers to read. It was published in some of the section of
press.
Had India tried to invade Goa earlier and had Salazar been a bit
magnanimous and rational to the freedom struggle of Goans in Portugal we
would have been a separate nation like Timor.
Present CM Pramod Sawant does not know of Goan history and culture as his
ancestors were from Maharashtra.

[Goanet] RIBANDAR IS ALL DECKED UP FOR OUR FEAST TODAY

2020-01-19 Thread Aires Rodrigues
Today our Ribandar Church under the very able and dedicated stewardship of our
Parish Priest Rev. Fr Antonio Lourenco Fernandes celebrates the Feast of
Infant Jesus. And tomorrow the festivities will move on to our nearby
Chapel at Fonduvem. For that occasion on Monday 20th January Ribandar will
be hosting the 115th annual very long-established Tiatr opposite the chapel
at 8pm. The highlight of this over a century old Tiatr is the very unique
and traditional depiction and enactment of Biblical scenes by our so
talented and outstanding local artists. It has always been my privilege to
act in our Tiatr and be part of the joyous celebration.

I have been very fortunate to have been born in Ribandar and lived all my
life in this scenic environment. When I depart it is only in Ribandar that
my overworked remains may rest in Peace.

Goan Newsletter January 19, 2020

Please Spare us your whining

Please save me your angst, I am not calling for suicides of those affected
by no mining and the dip in tourism, just stating the difference between
crocodile tears and reality. In plain English, tourism does not help all
Goans as the media’s stories tell you and Michael Lobo’s almost daily rant
makes it out to be. What I am saying is both the tourism and mining
industries in Goa got greedy and dived headlong into the mess both created.
Greed for money has taken over.

Dunce Cap Government

Lion Roars

The BJP government does not mind being rebuked by the NGT but will not fall
in line. Because fines are paid by your tax money. Another Rs 68 lakhs are
due when the case on illegal structures on beaches comes up for hearing on
January 21, 2020. EX-CM Manohar Parrikar vetoed setting up a bench in Goa
saying it would be a financial constraint and would not have enough work.
But since it was set up, the NGT’s Pune bench has passed more than a 100
judgements in Goa-related matters.
