[Goanet] India-China Hostility

A CNN analysis of the genesis and present causes of the dispute between India
and China.

Like the India-Pakistan thorn, it too will never go away. And you can’t blame
the British for this one!

Why are China and India fighting over an inhospitable strip of the Himalayas?

[Goanet] A letter to Vavradeancho Ixtt about Racism and Caste-ism

2020-06-19 Thread augusto pinto
Goans aren't very good at responding to criticism. And when someone points
out their mistakes they are too scared to deal with criticism.

Last week on Vavradeancho Ixtt I read two articles which were very racist.

I sent a letter to the editor of Vavradeancho Ixtt, a Br. E. Miranda a
letter criticising those articles with a cc to Walter Menezes to help in
case my Konkani had mistakes. I'll give you my letter below in English
translation below.

Dear Br. Miranda,

In the 13th June issue of Vavradeancho Ixtt there were 2 articles related
to African or people whose origins are related to people of African origin.

One was by one Rui Aleixo Coelho, entitled 'Khapreachem Jivit' (meaning
'the Life of a Khapri) and the second was ''Kalu' hem vaitt utor? ' (is
Kalu a bad word?). The author of the second article was not disclosed.

Coelho writes that a President of America was a' khapri' (sic). His name
was Abraham Lincoln.

I told Miranda that most scholars regard this information given by Coelho
was dubious quoting 2 links:

https://www.npr.org/sections/newsandviews/2008/06/andrew_jackson_thomas_jefferso.html

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/African-American_heritage_of_presidents_of_the_United_States

Then I told Miranda that I didn't want to continue with the issue as to
whether American presidents were African or not.

But I went on to question Miranda as to how he allowed Coelho to use the
word 'khapri'.

I said that I didn't know whether Coelho knew whether the the Konkani word
'khapri' was derived from the Portuguese 'cafre' or from the Afrikaans
'kaffir' both of which are regarded as being offensive to Africans or
people of African origin.

Then I questioned Miranda regarding the person who on his sports page
wrote: 'What's wrong in calling someone' Kalu'? He's not white. So what's
wrong in speaking the truth?

I told Miranda that his writer had no business addressing people with
appellations which they find insulting. I told him, "Your writer says -
what's wrong in calling a spade a spade?"

I explained to Miranda why one can't call anyone whatsoever he cared. I
reminded him that in the old days the elite referred to discriminated
groups of people as 'mhars', 'chamars' or 'gauddos'.

I told him that now these groups of people find such words insulting. One
cannot say, "What's wrong in speaking the truth?" This is a wrong attitude.
One cannot use words which disadvantaged people feel insulted by.

My letter was not published by Br. Miranda in the recent Vavradeancho Ixtt.

Which brings me back to what I began this letter with: Goans aren't very
good at responding to criticism. And when someone points out their mistakes
they are too scared to deal with criticism.

[Goanet] Fwd: We’ll Meet Again

2020-06-19 Thread Aloysius D'Souza
Thanks Roland

Yes Vera Lynn was sweet-heart of every man (and woman) in the Army, Navy
and Air Forces of the British and the colonial forces and also of all of us
waiting for news of our men and women at the front-lines in Europe, Africa,
Burma and Malaysia -- her songs and also her appearances at the various
war fronts kept the men going in spite of the difficulties. In the films
of some of her concerts you can actually see grown men with tears in their
eyes while joining her in her songs.

There is an entire group of videos of Vera Lynn and her tour of the front
lines during WW II.

I attended a concert at the NAAFI* Hall (which was the cinema hall of St
Xavier's Calcutta requisitioned by the British Government) where she
performed specifically for the various armed forces located in and around
Calcutta. Mum had managed to get us a special pass.

I am sure she was singly responsible for raising the morale of our fighting
forces.

Long live her memory in her songs.

Cheers

Aloysius

song of choice in every Bombay Anglo-Indian and upper crust Goan household
in Bombay boasting of an upright piano.

The British press sadly announces the death of Dame Vera Lynn at age 103.

[Goanet] SOCIALIZING DIFFERENCES

2020-06-19 Thread John Eric Gomes

TIME FOR UNITY AND CLARITY
We needed Corona and the Chinese to get BJP to undeniably confront reality, not
suppress criticism, show empathy for all parties promoting democratic unity
preparing for the real challenges by unifying our nation with the united power
of 1.3 billion people which we need to put first and dump the pollitics of
polarization, grandure and illusion, which frankly are taking us on the wrong
path! Lets admit small minds tear others down rather than build themselves up
shunning concealment, dishonesty and "whataboutery" rather than helping critics
rid themselves of their anger/ accusations by no excuses but by honest
explanations being calm and rational in public interest! "Be vocal for local"
but we find on the day of Ladak encounter, Great Wall Motors sign $1 billion
contract for an automobile plant in Maharashtra, and STEC (another Chinese
Company) Rs1.26 crores for Delhi Meerut RRTS line? There is a wrong notion that
just because the BJP has won elections and is a majority in Parliament,
dismantling all the checks and balances making the Opposition and the people in
general irrelevant is justified. The PM says he is at talking to all parties,
but finds some reason to keep Kejriwal out from the video conferencing? Why not
let us all trustfully unite ( without exception) to confront these two
dangerous enemies to the security and benefit of all Indians who make up this
great nation. Surely now Modi realizes at leant now, what Nehru felt when China
attacked after we all sang "Hindi-Chini Bhai Bhai!".

An excellent review of the Frederick Noronha-published book Sita Valles by you
in the Kenya Awaaz journal, Adolfo.

Although I have not read the book itself (I will correct that) your review gave
me a good setting of the background. I enjoyed it. I knew a little of the
African political context from a young age, but enough to admire your grasp of
it.

By the way wasn’t it Mario Soares who followed Marcel Caetano in Portugal?
There was a slight slip in your sentence construction making it appear as
Franco.

I am in due course going to read the Awaaz articles on Indian cinema and Goan
bands in Africa. A cursory glance at them, tells me they will be interesting.

I was surprised because I had sent them a review article longish in the
same spirit I had previously written for them when I wrote the article on

Basically they had written to me to say it was too long, it had several

Re: [Goanet] Mendes, Errol P. | Faculty of Law | University of Ottawa

2020-06-19 Thread John Nazareth
Prof Errol Mendes is an outstanding personality in Ottawa.
I found out about him a few years back while working on a genealogy project.
A group of us, spearheaded by a young man from Bedford UK - Richard De Souza -
had been mapping the family tree network of the Village of Moira (based on its
5 vangods/clans).
Turned out that Errol (5th vangod of Moira) was related to some of our friends
in the Toronto area.
That's when I first heard about his impact in our national capital.

Incidentally, I should mention a thing that people are probably not aware about.
The first Goan to be elected to a Provincial/Federal parliament in Canada was
Professor Leonard Preyra.
He was elected to the provincial legislature of Nova Scotia (2006) and became a
Minister of Communities, Culture, and Heritage in the NDP government.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonard_Preyra#:~:text=Leonard%20Preyra%20(born%20February%2010,Assembly%20from%202006%20to%202013.
(Just to be sure, I emailed him and confirmed that he is a Goan.)

Cheers
