B.I.B.L.E. - Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth

Matthew 13:41-43

41 The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will collect out of his
kingdom all who cause others to sin and all evildoers.

42 They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing
and grinding of teeth.

43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their
Father. Whoever has ears ought to hear.

[Goanet-News] A village, the nineties... and an all-girl band from Goa (FN)

2020-07-27 Thread Goanet Reader
FN

One paragraph -- written by Glenis Mendonca and Jeffrey
D'Souza -- about an all-girl band in a recent souvenir of the
Moira 'club' piqued my interest. Sharing it online (via
Moira-Net on Facebook), brought in a quick response.

It turned out that there were two -- not one --
all-girl bands in that Bardez village of the 1990s.
Wendy D'Sa helped to get five of the musicians of
those days to share their reminiscences.

"Somehow we could not get in touch with the drummer and her
sister," Wendy comments.

The "we" in this story are Vinita (drums), Cynthia (bass),
Delilah (lead on keyboards), Olivetta (rhythm guitar), and
Wendy, Rowena and Virginia as the trio singers.

"Casual Encounters, an all-girl band, started when Salazar
D'Sa, a musician from Moira village who so many remember
today, hand-picked us amateurs and invited us to be part of
this all-girl band," the team said after the topic came up
again.

They recalled: "Everything else then followed -- a
dedicated and hard-working team, great supportive
families, our village being a safe haven for
practices and rehearsals that went on past
midnight. Our age-old institution A.A. de Moira
for giving us the opportunity to perform our first
show and our village community for being there.
But most of all we had Salazar."

They had backup too. On the technical and electrical side,
for the instruments etc., there was Raul Electrical from
Mapusa. Sanjay, in his white Maruti van, is still
remembered. Band-members say, "Our godfathers were the
[bigger bands] Cascades and Syndicates"

Their first memories are of practice sessions at Salazar's
place. They would "look forward to 7 p.m."

Did they think it would succeed, at all?

"Success was never on our mind," the band members say today.
"We were enjoying every moment being part of an all-girl
band. It was a very fulfilling experience and we did our
best. We never thought it would go far, we had joined for
the fun of it."

So, what were the challenges then?

Setting up the stage and getting instruments tuned was one
they recall. It was also a challenge to balance work and
practices and shows. Travelling long distances and returning
in the early morning hours could be exhausting too.

So, did it pay off? How did audiences respond?

Many times they were called back on stage, "We once played
at a beach and, while getting down the wooden stage, the
crowd was cheering so loudly, we felt like rockstars," they
recall.

At Canacona, in the extreme southernmost part of
Goa, for the feast dance, they remember a huge
crowd. "When we performed Venus [by Shocking
Blues] in Moira, the people just ran onto the dance
floor. There was so much of movement on the floor."

"People showing us the "thumbs up", smiled and cheered. I
think audiences were quite excited to see a girl drummer too.
She was terrific and of course, there was the all-girl tag."

They recall it all today, some two and half decades later:

"The very thought that we were the only all-girl
band at that time, performing and expressing our
talents. Signing two big contracts soon after the
Moira feast dance, which was our first show.
Getting on stage with fog and lighting. Playing in
front of large crowds, the nervous adrenalin rush."

But all good things come to an end. So how did Casual
Encounters wind up? Some members moved out of Goa to further
their careers and it was difficult getting replacements,
especially in terms of musicians.

It ended abruptly.

Yet, it was a unique moment in time, a different world, time,
place and feel, they recall wistfully. "Recreating it won't
be the same."

Behind every successful man... Oops, got that wrong, and
revealed my bias while saying that. But, being from outside
Moira myself, I couldn't help wondering who Salazar D'Sa was,
the music mentor whom so many people had such good things to
say about.

A question online brought only more praise and memories about
the man who has since migrated westwards.

One of the members of the bands (not just one band, mind you)
he mentored, got in touch with him.

He wrote back, in a letter shared with me: "Thank you for
getting in touch with me. I really enjoyed the write up.
Brought back great memories. Those were exciting times in my
life and yours too.

"Desmond Machado was the one who first got in touch
with me to form an all-girl band when he was
elected the president of the Moira club. He said
that it was his dream if he became the president
and that I was the only one who could help him form
  the first all-girl band."

[Goanet] Relieve, revert Dr Edwin to parent department

2020-07-27 Thread Nelson Lopes
RELIEVE Dr .EDWIN ,REVERT HIM TO PARENT DEPARTMENT

Dr .Edwin with dedicated warriors set up from scratch
the Covid facility at ESI Hospital Margao. He was not specifically trained
nor had any previous experience. He did not refuse the posting nor demand
any extra privileges. citing inexperience, seniority et. al. He worked
strenuously for 3 months without break at the end of which, he needed a
little rest .His dedicated work led to establishment of first Covid
hospital in the State formulating and SOP procedures, which received due
praise and appreciation fo his handling of the situation with aplomb. When
he went on much needed rest and leave, he generously attributed his
achievements to the band of his colleagues, who prominently were by his
side and did not bask in self-glory. That was humility at its best. It is
to be noted that during his tenure the death rate did not spiral as it is
after his departure and which is a serious concern now,. The arrogant
statement in the Assembly that let people go to courts and that Govt. will
do what it wants to is highly irresponsible and condemnable. Is this a
reward for a doctor and gratitude for his sacrifices and obedience at
personal risks? It is veiled hint and direct threat, because his wife has
approached the H.C for relief from dictatorial and insensitive orders for
recall. He has now been directed report to duty, when he is on sanctioned
leave ad recuperating from covid infections himself.. This is a most
inhuman and inconsiderate treatment, which has no precedent. If there is a
need now for second facility, will Dr. Edwin expected to have his one foot
in other place too? Is there no other senior doctor in the Medical Cadres
similarly placed to take on responsibility? Is it a case of exploiting a
certain community person to deliberate disadvantage? If his services are so
indispensable, which is ludicrous, then he could serve as a mentor and
guide. It is clear that others are shirking responsibility, under guise of
his expertise, which in any way is acquired on the field

If the Department is so inept to find a substitute for his replacement, it
speaks of volumes of administrative paralysis, in which scenario advertise
for an experienced persons and sack the scrap and incompetent seniors. It
is greatest, intolerable injustice to deny earned leave to Dr. Edwin under
circumstance and put him on chopper board. His doctor wife knows at first
hand his exact health situation now, as she never objected to his posting
earlier. There is both merit and anxiety of his health conditions, which
has prompted her to take legal steps against insensitive authorities. The
court instead of blindly sticking to service rules has wisely directed
to have dialogue with the recuperating doctor The only way to acknowledge
his contributions in the initial stage is not to force his recall to duty
under force and threat, but let him voluntarily decide his willingness . It
is certain that he will not be found wanting, if his services are
absolutely necessary at any point of time. For the time being let him
complete his sanctioned leave and be reverted to his parent department.
The senior doctors in the same cadre need to be rotated without any excuse
whatsoever

The public sympathy and consideration is with the doctor Edwin , who has
been hailed, acclaimed and saluted as warrior of fight against covid . Dr
Edwin symbolize for us, Goan’s an angel in white robes and that title is
beyond reproach and unnegotiable. Govt. must show appreciation and
gratitude against public outcry for his services rendered without a fuss
and in all humility retrace its authoritarian arrogant attitude

[Goanet] CONTEMPT OF COURT

2020-07-27 Thread John Eric Gomes
DISSENT AND CONTEMPT
The Supreme Court has suo moto slapped contempt charges against eminent lawyer
Prashant Bhushan's two tweets criticism of the eminent judges triggering a
debate amongst the legal community and the citizens. It seems strange to many
that the Bench whilst delivering judgement on Rajasthan speaker and dissent by
rebel MLAs categorically stated that "The voice of dissent cannot be shut down"
and the same Bench is doing precisely the opposite in not tolerating the
dissent and opinion of many others like prominently JusticeMarkandey Katju,
articulated by Prashant regarding corruption in the judiciary and unflattering
perception of judgements by the top court. Many supreme Court judges in India
and abroad have handled similar and worse aspersions cast upon them with broad
shoulders, tolerance and maturity. Justice Krishna Iyer stated "The best answer
to abuse of a judge is not frequent and ferocious contempt sentencing but fine
performance". And even when publically called old fools a wise British Justice
Templeman reportedly said " That I'm old is a fact. Regarding fool that
perception I do not have to agree!". The perception of government sensitivity
to criticism must not be seen as being emulated but strongly rejected by the
Supreme Court in a Democracy and in public interest which is the last bastion
left to defend freedom of speech which it has been exemplarily doing so far!

Many congratulations to the President, the Committee present and past, together

Anniversary in 2020 and sharing with us on social media. It was good to see
that the Covid 19 crisis did not put a damper on their celebrations and they
marked this special day with a video that truly reflected the life and happy
times enjoyed by those of us who lived and are still living in Nairobi over the
years.

Former Tanzania Resident Lui Godinho informs the Dar es Salaam Goan Institute
celebrated its 100 Anniversary, the  building in the then German East African
Colony  was designed by the late Architect Tony Almeida with a floating dance
floor amongst its many features,  A documentary in Portuguese is being
commissioned by  RTP Lisbon. Well done and thank you to our creative and
enterprising people in East Africa.

Melvyn Fernandes,
1) While I too enjoyed the upbeat video, I am really surprised that Covid did
not hinder the events/celebrations in Nairobi.

2) A minor detail, the D.I. has two dance floors. The indoor floor doubles up
as the badminton court and has a stage. It is used for shows and wedding
receptions. The outdoor floor is a multi-purpose one and is known as the
"Sunken floor" and not the "Floating floor." Here is a home video shot on the
sunken floor. Everyone in the movie, myself included, is 53 years older.
