2020-08-20 Thread Aires Rodrigues
In the death of our dear Annand V. Madgavkar Goa has lost a true great Goan
who was always so concerned about the State. He was totally committed to
the welfare of Goa. An outsanding sportsman and a very successful
businessman he was. Over the years he was closely and dedicatedly
associated with numerous public agitations on various issues concerning
Goa. A so cheerful and fun loving soul Annand always was.

Annand bab who was always vocal on the environmental damage being inflicted
on Goa has been spared the further painful and agonizing ordeal of seeing
Goa’s remains being officially laid to rest.

May the departed soul of our so dear friend Annand bab rest in eternal
peace and may the Almighty grant his family and friends the strength to
brave this great loss.

[Goanet] {Dilip's essays} Flying snakes, those guides from beyond

2020-08-20 Thread Dilip D'Souza
Aug 21

I've been thinking about it. I have to say the idea of a snake flying
through the air and landing on my shoulder, say, has grown on me.
Especially if it is Chrysopelea paradisi, the gorgeous creature in the
attached photograph. No, it's not venomous. It merely flies. Glides,
actually. Wouldn't you like to have it land on your shoulder? (Let me know).

And some years ago, several paradisi specimens flew about in an enormous
building in Blacksburg, Virginia. My Mint column for today tells you what
that was about.

https://www.livemint.com/opinion/columns/opinion-flying-snakes-those-guides-from-beyond-11597973963496.html

I was delighted that I managed to include some lines from Rumi! And please

And again, your reactions welcome!

Flying snakes, those guides from beyond

At the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University—known as
Virginia Tech—its Moss Arts Center has a building called, simply, “The
Cube”. Because it is shaped like one. Just a vast empty room four storeys
high, this is a hi-tech theatre and laboratory. It’s used for music, dance,
films and immersive art installations—as also for scientific experiments
and research of all kinds. And in May and June of 2015, it was used by
snakes.

Not just any snakes, but the genus Chrysopelea: flying snakes from
South-East Asia, India, Sri Lanka and parts of China and the Philippines.
They are the only limbless vertebrate animals we know of that are able to
fly. Now this is not like birds fly. The snakes just glide through the air.
But they use their bodies to make them better gliders than, for example,
flying squirrels: they can fly horizontally, slow their descent and turn in
the air. The best Chrysopelea flyer is the paradise tree snake (Chrysopelea
paradisi); only about a metre in length, it has been known to fly as far as
100 metres.

So why were these flying snakes infesting The Cube? Involuntarily, of
course. The Cube is equipped with sophisticated motion-capture cameras,
capable of taking nearly 200 frames per second. That made it a perfect
space to study the motion of these little flying creatures.

Jake Socha is a professor in Virginia Tech’s Department of Biomedical
Engineering and Mechanics and has studied flying snakes for years. He has
several clips online of their flights. Socha launches Chrysopelea specimens
from a height and they undulate gracefully through the air, almost as if
swimming, to the ground—where assistants grab them before they slither into
the unknown. Unmistakable is the muscular, sinuous leap that snakes make to
start their flight. They also flatten their bodies in the air to almost
twice their usual width—resembling, in cross-section, a frisbee, the
popular flying disc. For the same reason that frisbees glide so well,
Chrysopelea glide well too.

But “undulate”? We know that’s how snakes move on the ground. That
undulation propels them forward. But why undulate in the air? Is it just a
biological memory, an instinct that snakes have? Is it just that motion, to
them, means undulation, so they undulate while moving through the air just
like on the ground? Does undulation actually help them fly, and if so, how?
In scientific language, “it is unclear if undulation is a functional
requirement of gliding, or simply a behavioural remnant of snake
locomotion, as all snakes are capable of lateral undulation, an
evolutionary ancient motor pattern produced by waves of muscle contraction
propagating down the body.”

Socha puzzled over this dilemma for years. On the face of it, the “memory”
explanation should not, well, fly. After all, evolution’s remorseless logic
argues against features and characteristics that have no utility. For that
reason alone, undulating in the air must have some purpose. Still,
reasoning alone is not good enough. “To determine if aerial undulation is a
flight control strategy or a non-functional behavioural vestige of lateral
undulation” in these snakes, Socha and his fellow-researchers took
Chrysopelea to The Cube.

They placed an oak tree branch about 9 metres up—the snakes’ launch
platform—and padded the floor so the snakes would not be hurt on landing.
They erected a make-believe tree on the floor because, in the wild, the
snakes don’t always fly down—sometimes they fly from one tree to another.
They set up the Cube’s cameras to take high-speed images of the snake in
flight. And they also worked on the snakes. Given how short most of these
flights actually are—just a few seconds—it’s difficult to comprehend
exactly what the snake is doing in the air. To better see and understand
their motion, the team stuck reflective tape along their bodies: 11 to 17
pieces on each animal. This allowed them to trace how different parts of
the body move.

There’s a fascinating collage of images in their paper, though it took me a
while to understand their full import. These are different views of a
single flight, from the top, the side and the rear.

[Goanet] THE WELFARE OF THECISF PERSONNEL NEEDS TO BE SECURED

2020-08-20 Thread Aires Rodrigues
The Central Government is duty bound to ensure on a priority the utmost
well being of the officers and constabulary of the Central Industrial
Security Force (CISF). It is so horrifying to see the pathetic working and
living conditions of these personnel who are shunted around the country
wherever their services are requisitioned.

It is so painful that due to the work related stress, the suicide rate
amongst the CISF is very high. This force which works so dedicatedly and
very professionally, at times even putting their lives at risk must be well
taken care of.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi must ensure that the salaries, perks and
benefits of the CISF and the welfare of their families is enhanced to
commensurate with the extremely hard work they put in their line of duty.

The government must Walk the Talk and 'Sab ka Saath Sab Ka Vikas' cannot be
its hollow slogan. If the Government does not come to the rescue of the
toiling CISF, this would be a fit case for the National Human Rights
Commission to intervene.

"Old Goa- The Complete Guide"

Old Goa is the historical city on southern banks of River Mandovi. The
former capital of the Portuguese Rule. Its has historical and cultural
importance and it's known for known for colonial-era monuments like the
Basilica of Bom Jesus, with the remains of St. Francis Xavier, and the
domed Church of St. Cajetan, inspired by St. Peter’s in Rome. Nearby, the
vast Se Cathedral, built in the 16th–17th centuries, has ornate chapels and
a bell tower.

We celebrate the feast of St. Francis Xavier on the 3rd of December and as
long as I could recollect every year we visit the Basilica of Bom Jesus for
Eucharistic Celebration (Mass) and to pay our yearly respect.

Old Goa is a Must Visit city(when you can safely), you can thank me later.

Tis book is an insightful approach for Goans or anyone wanting know the
significance, orgin and details of visiting various Cathedrals and spots.

on being requested to forward some email correspondence which mentioned it.
Appears to be a personal story together with the colonial history and
inputs on the sometimes messy South Asian decolonisation process. But what
I could read in the preview allowed by Amazon was the first chapter, mainly
of the author's life, with links to St Vicent's in Poona and Aden (where

[Goanet] India's 21st Century Man: Mahendra Singh Dhoni

2020-08-20 Thread V M
https://www.dhakatribune.com/opinion/op-ed/2020/08/20/op-ed-ms-dhoni-india-s-21st-century-man

Rather fitting that Mahendra Singh Dhoni announced his retirement from
international cricket on August 15, which was the 73rd Independence
Day of India. Ever since he first represented the country at the
highest level of the game (it was in an ODI against Bangladesh at
Chattogram, and he was run out for a duck) this Rajput from Ranchi has
uncannily personified the aspirations and changing identity of
hundreds of millions of his fellow citizens

The outstanding writer Supriya Nair – on sports, she is one of the
best of our times – pegged this phenomenon rather marvellously last
year, in a Mumbai Mirror column entitled “Ease of Doing Business.”

Nair wrote, “Someday a millennial historian is going to write a
chronicle of how India entered the 21st century. There, after the
records of pogroms, dotcom booms, Arundhati Roy’s essay and AR
Rahman’s music, Dhoni’s name will arrive, closing out the end of the
beginning of modern India.

She explained, “Dhoni is the cultural statesman of a different India.
He came of age in a voluble, neurotic decade, He will go out in a
country of strong, opportunistically silent men and their renewed
machismo. We cherish the appearance of rectitude but have no real
interest in accountability. We dream of progress but the fantasy is
increasingly militaristic. Making difficult things seem easy hasn’t
lessened the difficulty of doing them. A millennial history of India
may not even have to mention Dhoni to be about him in some key ways.

Here, then, is the significance of this remarkable figure, both on and
off the field. He was physically dominant, and preternaturally calm,
which made his team-mates (and the almost proverbial “billion neurotic
cricket fans”) confident they could win under any circumstances.

But he also embodied the sport’s dubious slide into inside deals and
oligopoly, causing irrevocable damage to the fabric of the game.

Within minutes of Dhoni announcing his retirement, social media filled
with encomiums from around the world. I was especially struck by an
unusual contention posted on Twitter by Keshava Guha, the novelist and
editor who has an exceptionally sharp eye for sports. He wrote,
“You’ll see three Sachins before you see another Dhoni.”

I emailed Guha to ask him to elaborate, and he responded “Sachin
Tendulkar, for all his genius and longevity, was the product of a
specific tradition – the Bombay batting gharana – and of sporting
infrastructure built up over the generations. You may not see his
exact equivalent, but there will be successors – there may already be
one, in Prithvi Shaw.”

Guha said, “cricketers are supposed to come from the Bombay maidan,
not Ranchi. Dhoni took the democratization of Indian cricket up a
whole new level. Then there was the matter of his self-taught, sui
generis technique as both batsman and keeper. He ignored every page of
the textbook. Finally, his personality – "cool" in every sense. The
most unflappable sportsman I've ever seen, and yet he never seemed
robotic. Articulate when he needed to be, but a silently commanding
leader most of the time. Put it all together and you get something I'm
certain I'll never see again.”

I asked Guha what he thought about the flip side of the Dhoni
phenomenon. He told me, “probably decisively in my estimation of him,
he was closely associated with the N Srinivasan regime that corroded
the integrity of Indian cricket, particularly through
conflicts-of-interest, and dictated terms in world cricket in an
arrogant and undemocratic manner. Dhoni himself was instrumental in
India refusing to accept the DRS, and was totally intolerant towards
legitimate questions or criticism, whether from journalists or
commentators.”

Of course, we cannot possibly hold Dhoni substantially responsible for
the irretrievable tarnish that has affected the game he played so
well. But it did happen on his watch, and it is partly his swagger
which distracted us away from it

Nair writes with insight, “we live in Virat Kohli’s world, but Dhoni
is the astronaut who terraformed this planet. He made big city polish
look foolish. He rendered pedigree, both technical and social,
inconsequential. Of his self-confidence, his facial hair, his ready
reckoning with the new T20 format, and his romantic effect on fans,
little remains to said. Indian cricket watchers are so uninterested in
his alleged links to corrupt cricket administrators and back room
dealers that those headlines have become less than a memory.

Earlier this week, after the retirement announcement, I emailed Nair
to ask what she thought about the moment. She wrote back, “it's
difficult to say when any kind of change is really complete in sports.
Dhoni was a harbinger of this era, but I don't think it has ended, the
way Tendulkar's era ended when he retired. I think he paved the way
for the Kohli era, so in some sense, he is still with us.”

Once upon a time in Aparanta - Sudeep Chakravarti

"Goa Is Aparanta of old - the Land at the Horizon. The tale of Dino Dantas,
protestor and self-appointed guardian of Aparanta and his innkeeper cousin
Antonio begins here, in the sleepy village of Socorro Do Mundo by the sea,
where time holds little meaning and the haze of nostalgia is as binding a
force as faith in the benevolence of Our Lady Of Perpetual Succour, Perpet
To Familiars"

I picked up this book after reading the back cover of the book which begins
this way and a few other reviews of the book which talk about the state of
Goa as it is today, especially about people from other cities wanting to
settle there. I'm a Goan living in Delhi and I sometimes wonder why the
Goans seem to hate North Indians so much when on the other hand, Delhi
people who come to know I am from Goa love me all the more for it!!

[Goanet] The 2020 Goa Book Covers Campaign (2020-GBCC)

2020-08-20 Thread Frederick Noronha
Do you collect and/or read Goa-related books? Or, are you simply interested
in knowing more about books from and about Goa? If so, read on. This is for
you:
The 2020 Goa Book Covers Campaign is an initiative by a team of book lovers
in Goa (launched on August 20, 2020). The idea is to share 20 book covers
from your collection (or from anywhere else, including on the internet).
You can share these on your Facebook page, or via Twitter, or via
Instagram, or on any other social media network. Ideally, you could share
one cover per day, over the next 20 days. If you feel you might not be able
to sustain this, rather than dropping out, you could share a total of 20
covers in batches on one or more day.
Rules and guidelines:
1. This can be shared on any social media site.
2. Inclusive of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.
3. Each post has to be tagged with #2020-GBCC.
4. When you accept the challenge, let us know.
5. When you complete the challenge, let us know.
6. Send your name, location to FN +91-9822122436 (WhatsApp)
7 You will be listed on joining/completion.
8. Below each cover, describe the book in 50 words or less.
9. Your original views preferred for the above.
10 Email your 50-words comments to goa...@goanet.org
If you haven't read a book or don't have access to it, that's not an issue.
You could write about your feelings on getting to know about the book, why
it attracted your attention (or didn't), why you might like to read it, etc.
Books may be in any language, but need to be related to Goa. You are
encouraged to post books in languages other than English too. The three
best entries will be awarded Goa book prizes. Delivery of the books within
Goa only. Everyone who completes a minimum of ten covers will be given a
participation e-certificate.
The idea of this is to promote awareness about the diversity of Goa books
and create more visibility on the same. All are welcome to take part, even
if you haven't read or come across any book related to Goa as yet. Please
keep it a fun activity, and let's be polite and friendly to all others
involved. Send us your name and we will add you below.
Founder members of this initiative are Armenia, Carlos, Fatima, Frederick,
Joy, Leonard, Melina, Rossey. Rukma, Sneha, Tanmay and Zoya.
A. List of those who have signed up for the challenge:
1. Sneha, Goa
2. Joy, Mapusa
3. Carlos, Sarzora
4. Armenia, Goa
5. Fatima, Delhi
6. Rossy, South Goa
7. Zoya, Australia
8. Melina, Goa

[Goanet] Dog chow

2020-08-20 Thread eric pinto
An average mutt needs three pounds, a pound of flesh included. Bone
content is one percent fat, the rest ash carbonate which is not utilized. This
is distemper season, the hideous viral scourge. A diet that makes for antibody
defence offers a little hope. I could eat my heart out and convulse for all to
gawk at, to little avail.

[Goanet] SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS

2020-08-20 Thread John Eric Gomes
CONTROLLING SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS
A Wall Street Journal (WSJ) report that Facebook has a BJP bias has Congress
and Opposition up in arms, BJP defending Facebook by terming reputed WSJ as
Leftist propaganda. Those who are familiar with WSJ state that it is in fact a
far Right tabloid but strictly follows the middle path mostly with integrity.
There is definately a problem with asking powerful social media to control hate
speech and prejudicial application of election integrity rules! Facebook
encorporates Whatsap and Inastagram and will obviously look after its own and
shareholders interest by pandering to whoever can promote their interests! With
a Parliamentary Committee looking into this problem to exercise government
control on them, will through them endanger the freedom and privacy of citizens
and media since everyone indispensibly use these platforms freely now! It seems
ridiculous to me that the government, courts, police and political parties will
not control our own so obvious and blatant hate speech and inciting violence at
source, but want help of foreign based platforms to subjectively and
retrospectively censor them. Unfortunately that is exactly what is happening
due dirty politics and it is infact getting more and more difficult to
recognize what is in public interest and what is the truth! These are
uncertain, difficult and dangerous days with Covid rampant and an assault on
democracy. Even a little hope is spiked with Governor SatyaPal Mallik
transferred with less than a year in office . The only bright news is the
reported NGT order on Goa's private forests which directed state government to
pay well deserved petitioner Goa Foundation the costs of litigation!

[Goanet] BJP’S GAIN IS GOA’S LOSS

2020-08-20 Thread Aires Rodrigues
It was known two weeks ago that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had managed to
convince his High Command that Satya Pal Malik should be removed as Goa
Governor. The decision at the highest level was taken and all that they
were waiting was for the Independence Day ceremony to be over.

The post of Governor is an important constitutional post and as the Chief
executive of the State has Executive, Legislative, Judicial and Financial
powers amongst other discretionary powers to ensure the smooth running of a
State. When the Government of the day abdicates in its duty the Governor is
duty bound to step in, and Satya Pal Malik intervened in the State’s
interest on issues like Mhadei, Mining, COVID crisis and that skewed move
of the Government to construct a new Raj Bhavan. He was also so keen that
Goa should focus on agriculture and avoid environmental degradation.

The very unceremonial shunting of Satya Pal Malik was in bad taste. Goa has
lost out on a gregarious personality with a robust heart who has always
been a socialist. He was indeed a good listener with a very clear mind and
believed in achieving results. A very caring and considerate soul he was.

We have lost a very modest, practical Governor who believed in delivering
good governance to the poorest of the poor. He was very anguished and
pained at the manner in which Goa was being misgoverned.

With a very irresponsible and insensitive Government in power, our only
saving grace was that in Satya Pal Malik we had a very proactive and astute
Governor who did not tolerate or approve any reckless actions and wrong
decisions.

In his just 10 month tenure in Goa the very amiable Governor Malik was very
popular and became the people’s voice while making the Raj Bhavan
accessible to the common man. He had a mind of his own and to Chief
Minister Pramod Sawant’s dismay Satya Pal Malik very rightly refused to be
a rubber stamp Governor.
