[Goanet] GOVT MUST FOCUS ON BATTLING COVID-19 AND FORGET IFFI

2020-08-28 Thread Aires Rodrigues
It is absolutely outrageous that despite the raging pandemic, Chief
Minister Pramod Sawant has decided to hold the 51st edition of the
International Film Festival of India (IFFI) this November. Is the
government off its rockers?

In 2004 the then Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar did the people of Goa and
Panaji in particular the biggest disservice by consenting to host IFFI in
the State. Over the years it has been over a week long annual nightmare
faced by Goans in the hosting of that IFFI which has in no way benefited
the State but only been a big window of opportunity for the politicians in
power to rake in huge moolah. Even the small contracts of all events have
never been entrusted to the locals.

With its crumbling infrastructure Panaji is already a very congested city
and the traffic chaos on account of IFFI is something the city could do
without. With the fun and frolic at tax payers expenses, IFFI has only
further burdened an already cash strapped State, besides the extra pile up
of tones of garbage IFFI generates and the municipal authorities have to
grapple with. The common man also suffers as the day to day government
administration takes a break with officials all pre-occupied with the IFFI
fiesta.

IFFI has been a bonanza only to the workers of the political party in power
and not been advantageous to the State. The ground reality is that what
over the years has been staged is infact International Fraud Festival of
India. Time to bid it a farewell and free Goa from this unwelcome
extravaganza.

[Goanet] Prashant BHUSHAN speaking at the OXFORD UNION on Modl's government

2020-08-28 Thread BT Yahoo Mail
It was most instructive to listen to lawyer Prashant Bhushan at the
Oxford Union Forum on the sins & horrors of the MODI government.
The Oxford Union is rightly famous for hosting a range of high quality
debates.

India claims to have some hundreds of so called Universities but what
sort of research do they conduct there, if any?

And do they engage in public discourse of any kind?

Here are some of the points made by Mr Bhushan :
- Modi has brought havoc to the country
- he has wrecked the economy with thoughtless policies like
demonetisation

- he has destroyed over 10 million jobs in just one year
- he has destroyed all institutions that are meant to find out the facts
and tells us to rely on propaganda
- he has taken control of large sections of he media through
inducements & threats and turned them into instruments of propaganda.
- Modi stated without evidence that ancient India had developed plastic
surgery and Ganesha's elephant trunk is a fine example

- Modi has abandoned reason and critical thinking

#2020-GBCC Goa Book Cover Challenge

Book 2 - ‘Forever Yours’

‘Forever Yours’ was first published as ‘Sankoll’ by Bonaventure D’Pietro in
Konkani and was translated into English by Willy Goes in 2017. The docu-novel
spans three generations with the traditions and social customs related to a
Goan Catholic wedding as the main subject. This book throws light on the reason
behind these rituals. The fortnight long grand affair is now reduced to mere
three days and in some families just the wedding day. The book also came with a
Konkani CD featuring Zoti and Vers which are sung during the preparation of the
wedding.

Albuquerque, reputed historian and author, paints, of the Goan presence in

from cooks and musicians, educationists and intellectuals, to priests,
physicians, entrepreneurs and sportspersons. A valuable record indeed.

[Goanet] America going to the dogs?

2020-08-28 Thread BT Yahoo Mail

I just read a scathing assessment of the USA by Paul Edwards of Montana.
Here is the gist of what he said. It rings painfully true.

1. What is happening to America is an unmitigated tragedy and there’s no
satisfaction in satirising or ridiculing it.
This diseased, battered country still stands, reeling in confusion,
outrage and endless violence.
Wit, humor, and irony lose all effect when change is not possible and
essential change is no longer conceivable in America.

2. The root cause is that our system has been built on injustice and
inequity... Our foundation was built on genocide, slavery and white
privilege and the nation evolved accordingly.

3. The last four years of Trump has forced into high relief the
grotesque rottenness of the polity that hallmarks our failed state.
The Trump era has advertised in grisly detail the vacuous arrogance,
blatant cruelty, bottomless avarice, and brazen aggression that has
insulted, violated, and alienated the world.

4. From our beginning, our Exceptionalist mythology has long taught that
Americans are a superior kind of people, just and heroic.
Yet our government has partnered with and coddled dozens of the vilest,
murderous maniacs that ever lived, arming their police states, providing
death squads and mercenary thugs.

5. The economic & social security of working people has been actively
undermined. But the titans of finance have enriched themselves
obscenely and used the War Machine to kill millions of peasant “enemies”
in places they couldn’t find on a map.

6. The people no longer believe that the state represents them. When
that faith fails, state authority dissolves, and there is war in the
streets.
Meanwhile, two old inept, and impaired buffoons catering to the .001%
are preparing for an election by the end of the year.

[Goanet] cyril ferrao first goan professional soccer coach

Nelson Lopes

 Mon, 11 Feb 2019 07:50:48 -0800

CYRIL FERRAO , First Goan professional coach.

Mr. Antonio Ciril Ferrao, alias Cyril was born on 2nd. Nov.1929
at Chinchinim, to late Mr Tomacino and Mrs Amaldina Ferrao. Eldest in the
family of two brothers and sisters, lost Mr Jose and Mrs Valdomira ,
leaving behind Mr, Ludovico (player) and Mrs. Celine. He completed
Secondary School at St, Bosco`High School Chinchinim, and Portuguese
education (Lyceum) up to grade 7(setman), He was fluent with English
language

He can proudly be honored and included amongst
the PEARLs of Chinchinim Village. He has left a blazing trail
and indelible foot prints on the football map of India and Goa in
particular. He has thus carved a special niche in the hearts of football
lovers, who had great respect for his dedication and immense
contributions to promotion of sports.

He was employed as the Head clerk at Salgaoncar at Vasco, but nursed
altogether a different ambition in life , which he pursued with single
minded devotion . In his youthful days he was very much associated
with Chinchinim Club devoted to football. It was reputed as granary and
nursery of football players on the football map of Goa . He coached the
players of the club .His personal interest, observations, suggestions and
guidance to other talented players led to polishing and improving of their
skills. He was compelled by circumstances of difference of opinions to
register and fund CHINCHINIM YOUTH CLUB. As the founder, intended to
rejuvenate and infuse interest in the dying game. The players were mostly
from Sucaldem and Plamar-grande wards of Chinchinim. He was generous in
extending much needed financial support. It was for the first time,
exclusive and historical , for any Village to register two clubs but
it was possible only because of his clout. . . Dedicated coaching of the
village youth took the game of soccer to great heights of recognition and
excellence. As the coach he was a hard task master, strict and
disciplinarian. Budding players groomed by him loved and feared him as much
but respected him for his foresight and vision. He was firm in his
conviction not to field or coach players from outside the Village. Under
his tutelage St. Bosco`s H. School ,Chinchinim were crowned finalists,
twice in a row, at all Goa School tournament . Many players
of Chinchinim Youth Club (CYC) were recommended by him for placement and
therefore found lucrative, professional openings in football clubs in the
state and India. They climbed the ladder of success and rose to prominence
and fame at International level too. Their gratitude, appreciation and
advancement further enhanced his commitment. CRCC games were being
fielded and funded by Chinchinim Motorcyclists and also by Rev Fr. Agnelo,
amongst others to keep the fires burning. He didalways maintain a
healthy, co- operative and sporting spirit towards CRCC, in spite of
differences of opinions and thus remained its admirer to the very end. He
dashed off to Panjim and secured blood to save the lives of
those Chinchinim players involveled in the deadly accident at Curtorim . A
compromise and understanding was arrived at and he
disbanded Chinchinim Youth Club in favour of CRCC. It was due to his
initiative in indicating and securing the present premises of CRCC with the
support of Mr.Alvarino. The only existing Church ground was temporarily
under seize by Portuguese army garrison .Instigated by the vested interest,
the dispossessed tenants publicly abused and threatened him . He was
arrested, detained overnight due to motivated, fabricated police
complaint in revenge but soon released, unharmed by influential contacts
.It is with pride and honour we recall that Chinchinim Club was declared
Champions in 1951 , runners up 1952.The football lovers were delighted
and ecstatic . He was part of the team of Club Desportivo Chinchinim ,he
coached and which won Goa`s first ever Primeira Division League title.

Mr Cyril captained Salgaocar team and he donned colours for Amadores, Paulo
XI, among others, as the dependable centre half

His talents were recognized first by M/s Shantilal , to coach the team
for 2 years, which he selected and was declared as Champions of Goa Senior
Division League. He thus unearthed scores of promising football players.
His two year stint with Dempo Club as their First Coach in 1964,also saw
them honoured as Champions GSDL twice in succession,

WILL WE EVER LEARN?
We are suffering Tsunamis, global warming, climate change leading to mighty
changes and disasters, pollution bringing unwanted diseases to all and now
Covid destroying world wide lifestyles, financial ruin, disrupting all
business, imprisoning us at home or frightfully going about with masks and
social distancing etc. India has its own demographic problems, unskilled labor,
vast disparities in income and living conditions which are widening! We are
using unrestricted technolgy to shift to a digital on line robotic world
continuing devastating the earth with 5G, more towers bringing more harmful
emanations, backing into same unstainable development thus asking for something
worse than Cancer and Covid to sustain priveledge welfare and dominance. Right
from Hitler to todays macho rulers, if world war does not wipe us out,
increasing deadly diseases and calamities probably will? What we need is the
world to unite, not divide further in self interest, distrust, terrorising,
enslaving people and wasting resources on war machines and continue to harm/
enslave/ exploit each other, and mother earth rather than permitting
rationality and humanity to save this planet and mankind! What will it take and
when will we ever learn?

[Goanet] HEALTHY CITIZENS ARE OUR GREATEST ASSET, THE POLITICAL ELITE ARE A DRAIN ON OUR RESOURCES

2020-08-28 Thread Aires Rodrigues
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has stated that the team of expert doctors who
had been flown all the way from Delhi to check Ayush Minister Shripad Naik
have also examined those COVID positive MLAs. Why could the Goa Government
not request these doctors to also check other patients who are battling the
virus at our COVID hospitals? Is this because our citizens, the taxpayers
that pay for these unfair immoral privileges of the few are treated as
second class citizens?

Is the life of the politicians any more important than that of the common
man? Every COVID patient in the State has a right to get the best medical
care like anyone else. Will the Goa Government fly in doctors from Delhi to
examine our poor patients or is this only the privilege of the Politicians.
There is an African idiom that says if a man does not eat at home, he may
never give his wife enough money to cook a good pot of soup. This might
just be true when applied to our politicians seeking medical help from
anywhere and from anyone instead of relying solely on our own doctors like
the rest of the hard working taxpayers are forced to. This proves that our
health systems are in a depressing condition and cannot be relied on. If
law makers who have the power to enhance our medical systems do not have
faith in our healthcare, then why should the taxpayer? On the contrary,
taxpayers will feel cheated that they are treated as second class citizens
and are left with a second rate health system, not getting value for money
and that their hard earned taxes have been wasted.

While the cash rich politicians and their families get unlimited free
medical care at private hospitals, the common man has to borrow money by
pawning their jewellery and property with a hope that the patient will
survive. Medical tourism among Goa’s elite politicians is a big cause for
concern because they are responsible for the development of proper health
care for all citizens. Over recent years, this practice of politicians
going abroad or importing medical expertise from outside the state has
become the norm. The reasons for exercising this choice are obvious. They
lack confidence in the health systems they oversee, and because they can
afford this superior level of health care because their huge expenses are
paid for by the taxpayers, the very people that are forced to accept an
inferior level of care.

We all saw how our cash strapped State squandered those crores on the
medical treatment of former Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar though he was
terminally ill. The irony is that even a day before his death while we all
knew the factual position, the Health Minister Vishwajit Rane had the
audacity of misleading us that all the parameters of Manohar Parrikar were
fine. Sir Winston Churchill opined that healthy citizens are a nation’s
greatest asset. Time our Government took his advice seriously and made the
health of our citizens the top priority.

The time has come that the Government should ensure that the level of
medical care is the same for every citizen. Not a paisa more nor a paisa
less. This may also see radical improvement of health care in government
hospitals. All the political parties need to come to a consensus on this.
Even if there needs to be a public agitation towards ensuring this, so be
it. Good Health care for all even the poorest of the poor should be out
primary focus. What’s good for the goose must be good for the gander.

Equality for all is anyway in the Preamble of our Constitution of India.
However, if the taxpayers continue to pay for the medical tourism of Goa’s
politicians, the result will be that they will have little or no motivation
to change the status quo and this equality will always be a pipe dream.
