MANAGING BIOMEDICAL WASTE IN INDIA

COVID-19 AND BEYOND

TUESDAY, JANUARY 19, 2021 | 3:00-4:30 PM IST

Four years after Biomedical Waste Management Rules were notified in
India, implementation has improved in certain areas but continues to
remain iffy on key parameters. COVID-19 has brought the need for
extremely careful handling of biomedical waste into renewed focus. Not
only has the quantity of biomedical waste produced in hospitals and
other healthcare facilities increased, but with large numbers of
people being quarantined at home, infectious waste has to be collected
and processed from residential set-ups
as well. Biomedical waste management is a tricky business; it has
become even more so in the COVID-19 times.

In CSE's latest publication, we highlight the current status of
biomedical waste management in India, the big wins, possible lacunae,
and set an agenda for the future.

We invite you to a webinar with experts from biomedical waste
management sector who will talk about initiatives and efforts in the
right direction towards biomedical waste management.

*NOTE: This is a free webinar for Waste management practitioners,
officials from central and state urban departments and municipalities,
urban and town planners, academicians, students, NGO representatives
and anyone who is willing to learn about biomedical waste management
practices in the country. All those who register will receive an
automatic confirmation. However, we request you to register yourself
at the earliest and reach out to us in case of any queries.

[Goanet] The Going Ons In Washington and Goanetters

Vivian hangs his head in deep shame and AGONY. Those are his own words. I
empathize with him completely.

:::There is a danger that in our Generalizations we throw the baby with the
bath water. Viviian is not echoing the sentiments of the white hoodlums. ;;;

:Vivian earned his citizenship in a risky dangerous way. He prevented
anarchy in one East African country;

I agree with him and empathize. Vivian states

" As a citizen of the United Sates of? America I hang my head deeply in
shame and agony, to see what is going on in Washington DC , the place I
called home for over 3 decades.? We Americans owe an apology to the entire
world for this terrible example that the world's leading democracy is
showing the world.

There are many White and Black Americans who like Vivian hang their
heads in shame and and are worried what the mad man can do. ::: I have a
White American who as a protest against the Vietnam War volunteered to work
in Tanzania in our national Hospital, later went to Mozambique. His father
was a Capitan in the US Navy. ;;;

Eddie draws attention to the horrors of Vietnam War ...I wish he had
drawn our attention to the Vietnamese Girl..aflame with Napalm

whether they will ever see each other.

Just like eventually Nixon was nabbed so too must Trump face the Music

[Goanet] Impeachment is the alternative

2021-01-08 Thread Nelson Lopes
The 25 ammendment of USA constitution deals with sedition, treason and
there are enough grounds and evidence to take action. Impeachment process
is an alternative to show allegiance to the constitution and send clear
message agsinst the insurrection motivated by by the President. Even if
the time is limited and there is no support from Republicans the
movement need to be initiated as only measures possible to show
indignation .
Republicans may be on the horns of dilema to support the strong measure
against their own President. If they do not support it will send a ckear
nessage that they are supporting the conspiracy of seize of Capitol Hill
and all the subsequent acts that followed. Hence the emphaty of
Republicans will be exposed as mere lip service
Even if half the country has voted for Republicans and not Trump there
will saner ekements amongst the multitudes who will weigh the new
circumstances of chaos, seize ,tresspass abd vandalism, disrespect to
National pride and exposing values that America stands for globally
It will also show that he is the only President impeached twice during
tenure of one term in office Action must only seem to be done but must be
done

[Goanet] New York City Cabdrivers - a CNN video

2021-01-08 Thread Roland Francis
Cab driving everywhere is decimated. First by the entry of Uber and the other
electronic app companies and now by the pandemic and the steep drop in tourism
which was a big revenue earner in New York City.

As a brief explanation:
To become an owner-driver in NYC you have to have a ‘medallion’ aka Taxi
Permit. These medallions as they say in the video, were worth a million dollars
in 2013 to buy or sell. They were transferable and drivers passed them on to a
future generation or used it as a retirement asset or income.

What if you chose to drive a cab and had no medallion? You located a medallion
owner who rented it to you. You bought your own car, drove it all day long and
paid the medallion-owner anything from 3 to 6 thousand dollars. Then for the
night shift another driver paid another fee (may not be as much as the day
shift).

So you are an uneducated immigrant just landed in NYC and no hope of getting a
job. Stories abound of engineers and doctors from other countries gravitating
to cab driving. Despite the medallion rent, you made a living and could support
a family.

In fact you did good and your medallion owner was an old man with no one to
pass his medallion to. So you one day sat with him with the intention of buying
it from him and because he liked you for all the money you gave him on time for
years, he agree to sell it for less than the going price. You bought it from
him for $800,000 and he agreed to allow you to pay him principal plus interest
amortized for say 20 years just like a mortgage instead of one lump sum (which
you didn’t have or couldn’t borrow). You got the medallion and he got a
retirement income.

Now you could do what he did. Rent your medallion out day and night. Because
what you earned now was less than what you had to pay your lender plus support
your family, you took a job in a convenience store or somewhere, all the while
knowing you owned (in a manner of speaking) an asset worth a million dollars.

And then Uber come and after that the pandemic. You cannot rent out your
medallion because there is no business for the renter-drivers. As a double
whammy, your medallion now sells for $75,000 while you still owe say 700,000
having by now paid about a hundred thousand back.

So you commit suicide.

Now you know the predicament in which Indian farmers have been committing
suicides in large numbers these past few years all over the country.

The reasons may differ, but the causes and the result remain the same.

[Goanet] Give Them A Drink!

2021-01-08 Thread Roland Francis

Only in the Express

With labour hard to find in the remote village of Ratir Kethi in Uttarakhand,
locals would often promise other residents liquor instead of money for helping
them out during weddings. But in December, driven as much by the money spent on
this tradition as complaints of drunken brawls and domestic violence, Ratir
Kethi passed a resolution banning the sale, distribution and serving of liquor
at all religious and social events, including wedding ceremonies.

Reminds me of the days in Goa when it was de rigeur to pay the help with money
plus a little shot of Feni. Of course the shot wasn’t ‘little’ when they
offered you their own coconut half-shell in which to pour, a container that
could take as many as 4 shots.

Of course these guys in Uttarkhand just skipped the money and gave the drink.
Cheaper and no need to look for the notes.

[Goanet] TIMETO AXE ALL ROADSIDE ILLEGAL RELIGIOUS STRUCTURES

2021-01-08 Thread Aires Rodrigues
The Government must strictly comply with every Court order and cannot flout
any of it. Despite various orders and directives by the Supreme Court the
Goa Government has intentionally failed to demolish and clear roadside
illegal religious structures. No steps whatsoever have been taken by the
state government in this regard which is in clear contempt of Court. This
willful attitude of the state administration of conveniently and
selectively keeping Court orders in cold storage is deplorable.

The Supreme Court in September 2009 while ordering the demolition of all
roadside religious structures had directed that no unauthorized
construction shall be permitted in the name of temple, church, mosque or
gurdwara on public streets or , public places. But we see them continuing
to mushroom across the State. Further the Supreme Court in 2011 restrained
state governments from granting permission to install statues or erect any
structure on public roads, pavements and sideways and other public utility
places.

Concrete steps must be taken by the state authorities to remove all
existing illegal encroachments on the roads and to prevent new structures
from being erected alongside the roads which will only add to the existing
problem of traffic congestion. All these illegal religious structures along
the highway and state roads significantly restrict movement of vehicles
leading to long traffic snarls. This is a public hazard people have to
grapple with where unauthorized religious structures are obstructing roads
and inconveniencing the commuting public.

It is an irony that while on one side the government has been broadening
roads and pavements for the benefit of public, while many have taken the
opportunity to blatantly enlarge the already existing illegal religious
shrines.

It would be great achievement for the Goa government in this 60th year of
Goa’s Liberation, the State is freed of all illegal and unauthorized
religious structures alongside the roads and in public places.

Capital Chaos

The recent storming of Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. in the U.S. by so
called "Trump" supporters is very unfortunate. However, what is more
saddening is the presence of our beloved Indian Flag. It is regrettable
that our flag is being used by elements to participate in violence abroad.
The rioting and violence is unacceptable and has no place in any democracy.
