Thanks to our Eric Pinto, here are Annika Noronha-Kwatra and Carlton Braganza
both well known music personalities in the Bombay, Bangalore, Goa circuit
singing an old country favourite.

Annika is a Bombay-Dubai born and raised singing talent with glorious pipes.
Casual and friendly, she sings in Calangute (this song) and wherever her
husband-manager Rishee finds gigs for her.

Carlton Braganza, a Xaviers College Bombay alumnus is popular in all three
places which are India’s today’s English music heartbeats. He likes to call
himself a music solutions organizer and you will find his also-friendly music,
singing and DJ acts at gigs, weddings and corporate events.

Re: [Goanet] [Goanet-News] DELHI: A Godin & Co, the piano shop of Connaught Place, is gone (2016)

2021-01-23 Thread Victor Rangel-ribeiro
My dear Frederick,    The Godin Piano store may have vanished from Delhi, but
the Bombay store, located barely 50 yards from my apartment in Byculla when I
lived there in the 1950s and whose owner was a friend of mine, continues to
exist in Panaji under a different name and perhaps a different ownership. For
details of how and when that transition took place, you should contact
Christopher Gomes, of Furtado's. He has continued the tradition of expert
service.

Re: [Goanet] [Newsletters] Why The Emigration?

2021-01-23 Thread Roland Francis
Presumptuous idiocy is what causes one to think unproven things about other
people. Your “you have nothing better to do” falls in that category.

I did not ask for personal stories about why people emigrate. I wanted
discussion on the ideas behind it.

Small minds discuss people, better minds, ideas.

[Goanet] Why The Emigration

2021-01-23 Thread Antonio Menezes
A very good question by "Roland Francis Jan22,21 and there
could be many answers.
The Goan Catholic emigration was the result of western education
that was available to him.The incentive for mass migration came
from the departing British troops who were stationed in Goa during
the Napoleonic wars. (1790 - 1810 ) Goans started migrating to
Belgaum, Poona ,Bombay , Karachi etc. mostly to be of help to
European families as they had healthy respect for non
vegetarian food.
There is probably a far greater reason to abandon the homeland
and settle down in various parts of the world.
I have lived in Belgaum, Pune, Bombay, Tanzania and Kenya
besides Goa. and whenever I came across a fellow Goan abroad
my perennial question was ''from which village do you come from? ""
Many of them simply did now know the village they came from or
some feigned not to know it. But once I was told that his parents
had advised him to forget the name of the village for reasons best
known to themselves. This could be one of the subtle answers
why some do not want to talk about the ancestral village.and
content to live abroad.

Cases registered against the agitating villages -serious cases filed by
police, cases like attempt to murder etc are still not withdrawn, nor is
the notification.

Opinion Poll day was celebrated this week in Goa with a function
commemorating the memory of Dr Jack de Sequiera, often referred to as the
Father of the Opinion Poll. Details of the happenings are covered in this

Just in came news about villagers of Talegao protesting against the

[Goanet] Gerson Fernandes and me a Yellow cab driver

2021-01-23 Thread Frederick Dsouza
Gerson Fernandes and I drove Yellow cab for 21 years in New York City

Taxi drivers hurting, too
For 21 years, Gerson Fernandes has driven a New York City yellow cab. He
owns a taxi medallion, or a small plate with an identification number
affixed to the hood of his cab, which allows him to operate as in
independent business and driver. He bought his in 2003 for $245,000, and is
still paying it off monthly. But since the pandemic began he cannot afford
the $3,000-a-month payment.
Even before Covid-19 swept the world, traditional taxi drivers were
struggling in New York City. At one point the price of taxi medallions
topped over $1 million, but that collapsed as drivers for ridehailing
services like Uber and Lyft flooded the market. In 2018, nine taxi drivers,
faced with the debt they had taken on just to afford a medallion, committed
suicide.
And then the pandemic hit.
At the height of the pandemic, ridership dropped by 90% for yellow cabs and
85% for ride-share apps, according to the New York Taxi Workers Alliance,
which analyzed New York Taxi and Limousine Commission ridership data.
"We've lost a lot of customers," said Fernandes, originally from Bombay,
India. "I feel sad that such a robust industry has been spoiled or really
like gone to the ground and it's not right."
The yellow cab is synonymous with New York City. Fernandes used to work
12-hour shifts picking up dozens of customers. Today, he says he is lucky
to get four or five. He spends his 8-hour shifts waiting for customers at
LaGuardia airport.
"Those days you could afford to buy a home and pay the mortgages or pay are
all the money, but now it's too bad -- it's difficult to pay," said
Fernandes.
He says he received unemployment benefits under the Pandemic Unemployment
Assistance program for several months when New York City shut down, but
stopped collecting once he returned to work.
Fernandes says he's seen a slight uptick in customers since the height of
the pandemic, but not enough to make him whole. He is hoping New York
City's Mayor Bill De Blasio will institute a rent forgiveness on his taxi
medallion lease. He already owes more than $10,000 — money he does not have.
"I try my best, but like, how much can you try?" said Fernandes. "What can
you do? [I have] very limited resources."
Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly spelled Gerson
Fernandes' first name.
