[Goanet] Covid May Never Go Away

2021-05-03 Thread Roland Francis
CNN says, here’s why.

While some countries are still being ravaged by the pandemic, the United States
is learning how complicated it will be to get out the other side. One dawning
realization is that Covid-19 may never actually go away.

US experts are beginning to cast doubt on the notion that we'll ever reach herd
immunity — the threshold of widespread immunity that means the disease stops
being transmitted. Millions of Americans won’t get the shot for personal,
health or political reasons, meaning that the virus could stay in certain
communities even when a majority of the country is vaccinated. That means
periodic flare-ups of the contagion, complicating the return to normal life,
from travel to education.

Experts are especially worried that a large pool of people who are not yet
protected by vaccines will allow the virus to grab a bigger foothold again in
the fall, when the cold weather in which it thrives returns. Add in the
possibility of emerging, extra-contagious variants, and America's current
flirtation with normality could soon be over. “We could start this whole
process all over again and have another huge pandemic come the winter,” Dr.
Leana Wen, a former Baltimore health commissioner, told CNN.

That's why American doctors are pushing for as many people as possible to get
vaccinated in the coming months. And while it may seem counterintuitive after
months of urging people to mask up, some experts also want the government to
relax more restrictions on people who are vaccinated -- in hopes that the sight
of immunized people in restaurants and bars will give vaccine skeptics an
incentive to get the shot.

The problem is that people who don’t get vaccinated — often conservatives — are
frequently among those most adamantly opposed to tracking measures like
“vaccine passports,” which could help the limited reopening of some activities.
The fight against a disease that seems to have an uncanny ability to tear at
the cultural and ideological fault lines of American life has been a political
minefield. And despite all their promise, vaccines aren't making those divides
any easier to navigate.

'It’s like a petri dish'
The continuing spread of Covid-19 will fuel the rise of more variants with
unpredictable outcomes, US Food and Drug Administration acting Commissioner Dr.
Janet Woodcock warned Monday. “With so much virus replication going on in many
parts of the world, it's like a giant petri dish. And so they're going to be
spitting up variants all the time because there's so much virus replication,”
she told Dr. Marc Siegel on SiriusXM’s Doctor Radio Reports.

THE GUNNING FOG INDEX OF YOUR WRITING BELOW IS 12.56

The number of major punctuation marks, eg. [.], was 22
The number of words was 356
The number of 3+ syllable words, highlighted in blue, was 53

Calculated via: http://gunning-fog-index.com/fog.cgi

This means: (i) A fog index of 12 requires the reading level of a United
States high school senior (around 18 years old). (ii) The number of
"complex" words you use (three syllables or more) is important. Count the
"complex" words consisting of three or more syllables. Do not include
proper nouns, familiar jargon, or compound words. Do not include common
suffixes (such as -es, -ed, or -ing) as a syllable

See more about the fog index here:

[Goanet] ENGLISH IS ENGLISH! NOT SIMPLE OR COMPLEX

2021-05-03 Thread Aires Rodrigues
A social media friend from South Goa who is an undergraduate and who I have
personally not yet met but only have corresponded with over the internet
for about five years has sent me a message which has left me in a quandary.

While thanking me for my writings which he says he regularly reads without
fail, he has requested me to try and write in simple English.

Thank God I was not educated at Oxford but went to just normal schools and
colleges. In fact my formative years in the third and fourth standard of
schooling was at a little Government run Primary school at Ribandar. I was
admitted there so that my Aunt who was a teacher there could keep a
watchful eye on my unending adventures.

All through my academic years, I was so blessed with good and dedicated
teachers who cared for and guided me all through my student days. On the
extra curricular side, they encouraged me to participate in public speaking
and essay contests. They were always a source of inspiration being friends
rather than mere teachers. What ever knowledge I was able to assimilate and
acquire to use in life, I owe it all to my dear teachers who were very
caring and patient despite my always being a very challenging student.

Now coming back to the request to pen in simple English, it may be too late
at 60 to return to basic schooling. But, if the Benaulim MLA Churchill
Alemao and even Chief Minister Pramod Sawant don’t have to struggle in
understanding what I write, I hope my social media pal from South Goa will
try and cope with the situation. May be we could bridge the gap once the
new Zuari bridge is operational.

In all that I candidly and fearlessly write, I attempt to ensure that
nobody needs the assistance of a dictionary to read and understand the
thoughts I express. I always aim for clarity, fact and sincerity. David
Gerrold an American novelist echoed my thoughts when he said ‘The single
most important lesson of effective communication is this: Focus on clarity.
Concentrate on precision. Don’t worry always about constructing beautiful
sentences. Beauty comes from meaning, not language. Accuracy is the most
effective style of all”.

Have at all times believed that the Pen is always mightier than the Sword.
May it always be so.

[Goanet] Maka Podonc Nam

2021-05-03 Thread Roland Francis
Nothing is more heart breaking than the personal grief of your family member.

This video depicts a father and in a later scene the brother of a Covid
afflicted 25 year old young man who was admitted to a Delhi hospital and the
next thing the father knew, he was dead.

Arvind Kejriwal Delhi Chief Minister is being blamed but the buck really stops
with the Prime Minister who calls the shots including the right to call in the
Army (which even Fauci told him to do) but has not done so for his own strange
reason.

Not to say there are no others that need to share the blame for this young
man’s death. A lot of blame can be attributed to the apathy of the average
citizen who allows those in power to get away with criminal acts of commission
and omission.

A good lesson for Goa where “amcam pondonc nam” (it doesn’t concern us) is
almost a commandment.

[Goanet] WILL IT BE BABUSH MONSERRATE’S SECOND EXIT FROM THE BJP?

2021-05-03 Thread Aires Rodrigues
With his political greed unending even during this current raging pandemic,
Panaji MLA Babush Monserrate accompanied by his side-kick the Santa Cruz
MLA Tony Fernandes met Chief minister Pramod Sawant on Saturday 1st May at
his official bungalow at Althinho and demanded an immediate reshuffle of
the State Cabinet. Monserrate reportedly told the Chief Minister that if no
action was taken within a week that he would go public on the issue.

This breaking news was published today on the front page of the Goa Edition
of the Marathi daily ‘Lokmat’.

Babush Monserrate has not lasted long in any political party and this is
his second stint in the BJP which may now not put up any longer with his
tantrums and may just sack him along with the St Cruz MLA.

Babush Monserrate over the years in his quest for greener and lucrative
political pastures has been hopping from Party to Party. He has seen them
all.

In 2005, the then Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had the courage to strip
Babush Monserrate of the Town and Country Planning portfolio due to the
growing corruption in the department with regards to the Regional Plan.
That in the bargain Manohar Parrikar had to lose his Chair is another
issue.

With the Assembly elections due early next year and which may be preponed,
Goa may witness another round of political slugfest.

The Goa BJP bus currently very overloaded with MLAs accumulated from
various political parties is bound to crash under its own weight.
