2021-05-07 Thread Nelson Lopes
Mr S.V.Kurade passed away

Ex Director of Education ,Govt. of Goa Daman and ex Officio Additional
Secretary to the Govt,

He hails from Panzorcon ,Cuncolim. He shifted his residence later after
retirement at Veroda and then to Panjim. He started his humble career as a
teacher at St Bosco`s High School Chinchinim. He was an excellent Science
and Mathematics teacher, but well conversant with many other school
subjects. He provided private coaching to weak students. He got a
well-deserved break as the subject School Inspector in the Education
Department. Being an astute, diligent worker, he climbed the ladder of
success to done the crown of Deputy Director of Education and finally
retired with distinction and honour, as the Director and ex Officio
Additional Secretary Govt of Goa, Daman and Diu. During his tenure he
helped shape, plan, start many educational Institutes, technical,
Educational colleges and Goa University, Grant in aid code, etc and the
brain behind growth and development of education. His services were
dependable in shaping the nascent Educational map of Goa. He had his ups
and down but never lost his focus and determination to tide over resolutely
his ambitious goals. He dealt with many contentious issues of teachers,
Headmasters, Management, and other school related issues with absolute
clarity and directions. He was the force behind the Trust, which took over
the Management of St Bosco`s H School Chimchinim, and which eventually
folded up due to emergence and competition of two new schools.

I was very fortunate to receive his guidance, as the newly appointed
Headmaster. He made it convenient for me to meet him at his residence on
holidays .I received guidance on relaxation of additional divisions,
appointments, promotion, regularization of services and condo nation of
break in service etc I shall ever remain grateful for making my task easy
and memorable. I remember that he admonished his assistant for directing a
Pvt .Management to take action against an employee and communicate the
same . He was forced to withdraw the controversial letter beyond his
jurisdiction and without approval of his authority and admonished too

He was ailing for some time .He finally succumbed to his illness at ripe
old age of about 97 years .He was blessed with long and happy life,
Unfortunately his beloved wife Sudha also passed away on the same day
after a few hours .She was a sheet anchor behind his success and expressed
the praise lavishly

They were together in life and death.Cremated on the same day together
on what appears to be their last wedding anniversary.

A few of his Headmasters, teachers and a doctor conveyed the sad news and
as his ardent admirer, .It was a day of mourning of having lost a true
guide and a friend

His memories will last a life time in the minds and hearts of all those
Teachers, Headmasters, Managers etc whom he touched intimately

He is survived by his daughters, son and their family .I convey my
heartfelt sympathies and condolences to the bereaved family

If you think a curfew will be the only answer to Covid and that on lifting it,
the people of Goa can go back to their previous indiscipline, you couldn’t be
more mistaken. It takes a lot more than a curfew to beat this pandemic.

Sorrowing lies Goa,a land called paradise

H.C comes to Goans rescue
Govt blundering without a clue,
Goans are dying daily like flies
Govt sheds crocodile tears ,spread lies

Covid centres are full and crowded,
Lack of arrangements in secrecy shrowed,
Patients dying waiting for oxygen and bed
Countless more will similarly be dead.

Casinos are Govt.milk cows
No lockdown Govt repeatedly vows,
Goa' s boarders are free and open
No test,no quarantine no pass or coupon.

The surge has now in villages spread.
Life and living people worried about bread,
Local bodies decide to close and shut
People wisely accept without if or but.

The much needed vaccine is in short supply
No walkin for doses must first apply,
Shortages of oxygen, beds, drugs Govt. d

oes not reply
Cotizens forced to stay at home and comply

Young and children are the target now
Stop visitors, tourists somehow,
Functions religious ,social are close
Elections ,melas continue no lockdow why we pose

Politicians rush to private hospitals to get fit
Govt centres are grave yards they opine with clean chit

Funds on ventilators , monumental scam ,a loot
Quality that matters reply , care two foot

Goa richest state has enough of natural wealth
Spend wisely on people's health
Bridges, roads, monuments are not priorities top
Tax burden on citizens, financial planing a flop

We cant breathe citizens sigh,
Simple as oxygen not avaiable why,
Scarcity of bed for sick no space
Govt preparedness and priority a disgrace

Local bodies lockdown a measure bold
Illegal, no power to enforce Govt hold
Villagers accept ,no rallies or protest
Govt feel encroachment of rights and detest

Surge and death cause alarm and fear
Helpless powerless to save near and dear
Even the final rites ,no better choice
Goa a jewel in the crown of states we rejoice

Patients have no bed a pilow to rest
Caught napping Govt put to acid test
Politicians make hay ,feather their own nest
Carnival ,sigmo, elections, casino are causes of pest

[Goanet] The Center Cannot Hold: India’s State Elections (Dhaka Tribune, 7/5/2021)

2021-05-07 Thread V M
https://www.dhakatribune.com/opinion/op-ed/2021/05/07/op-ed-the-centre-cannot-hold-india-s-state-elections

In the throes of the most apocalyptic Covid-19 surge any part of the
world has suffered, three crucial Indian states have rejected the BJP
political juggernaut.

Those losses, as well as the ruling coalition’s complicated and
contradictory win in Assam, underline broader trends that are rapidly
transforming the electoral landscape across much of the country
outside the band of North Indian states referred to as “the cow belt.”

The BJP’s striking defeats in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal,
also comprise an unmistakably sharp repudiation to the brutish
political (and often extra-legal) forces that the ruling coalition has
become accustomed to exerting to get its own way.

“I have never seen a more partial Election Commission” said the
strategist Prashant Kishor, immediately after the election results.

Credited with being one of the crucial factors in the victory of the
Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, as well as the Dravida Munnetra
Kazhagam in Tamil Nadu, he told The Telegraph newspaper, “this is not
only about Bengal, [it] is about India and about the survival of
democracy. Every democrat in India, and every political party, should
be concerned.”

Kishor said that “[the Election Commission’s] role in Bengal has been
scandalous, they have behaved like an arm of the powers in Delhi.
Without the help of official machinery, the BJP would not even have
won 50 seats. The way they were taking dictation was obvious to
everyone. I will name just one factor: the BJP led a most communal
campaign, it was predicated on naked Hindutva, on Jai Shri Ram, on all
sorts of religious symbolism and religious disaffection. What did the
Election Commission do to stop that? Nothing. And that is a danger, a
grave danger that will live beyond this election.”

In three successive elections (Bihar, Delhi and Bengal), Kishor has
bested the BJP’s tactical mastermind. He says, “Amit Shah is a most
over-rated political and poll manager. A disaster. He has the most
charismatic leader in Narendra Modi to put on stage, he has humongous
resources at his command, he has an elaborate party network supported
by the Sangh, he has the backing of the government and its agencies,
he has an Election Commission playing footsie, and still he lost! That
must tell you something about Amit Shah and his reputation.”

What does all this say about future possibilities in Indian politics,
once assumed to be heading towards inevitable majoritarianism?

Kishore told The Telegraph, “polarisation is a bogey, absolute bogey.
In no part of India have Hindus got polarised in a way that they
themselves become the majority, not even in Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh,
the two strongholds of the BJP. You do not want folks who make
excuses, you want people who will get into the pit and fight, and
fight seriously. Mamata Banerjee was prepared to do that.”

The battle for Bengal, with its dramatic imagery of diminutive “Didi”
battling valiantly against the heavyweights Shah (who held 79 huge
rallies in just 20 days), and prime minister Narendra Modi (whose
derisive catcall of ‘Didi, oh Didi” turned many women decisively away
from his party), wound up galvanizing the nation.

“Most Assamese followed the Bengal elections avidly, and it’s
interesting that many of the same people who voted BJP here were
rooting for Mamata there,” says the award-winning writer Mitra Phukan,
whose The Collector’s Wife is one of the best Indian novels of the
21st century.

Via email from Guwahati, Phukan told me, “I feel the BJP won in Assam
primarily because of one man, Hemanta Biswa Sarma, the health
minister, who has worked indefatigably throughout the pandemic. In
fact, many were saying that they would vote for whichever party HBS
belonged to. Now there is a movement for him to be chief minister.”

Phukan says, “In many ways, the BJP in Assam is different. For
instance, the anti-beef-eating stance will not work here. We do not
worship cows. We are Devi worshippers (Kamakhya) and followers of
Srimanta Sankardev’s Ek Sarana Dharma that is much more inclusive than
the hate filled rhetoric we hear from other parts of the country. What
worries me is the attempt to "North Indianize" Hinduism as we know it.
The muscular Hinduism, the Ram worship is alien to us. In fact, Ram is
hardly worshipped here. And yet there were posters urging us to donate
to the Ram Temple on the streets of Guwahati a while ago.”

There can be no doubt it is precisely the BJP’s aggressive “Hindi,
Hindu, Hindutva” idea of India that was repudiated in Kerala, Tamil
Nadu, and West Bengal.

“The threat posed by the BJP was, literally, the destruction of our
lifeways,” says Prof. Ananya Jahanara Kabir of King’s College in
London, “as a Bengali Muslim, I know how unsafe we feel under the
BJP's regime and also how safe we feel in Bengal. Undoubtedly, for a
lot of Hindu-identified people in Bengal, the BJP poses a threat
