[Goanet] IT’S MONEYPALAND NOT MANIPAL HOSPITAL
It is high time the Goa Government orders an independent probe into the manner in which patients are being taken for a ride and monetarily fleeced at the treacherous Manipal Hospital in Dona Paula. Health Minister Vishwajit Rane cannot be a mere spectator to all this very sad state of affairs and must crack the whip in public interest. We need to make people aware so that our friends, neighbors and relatives don’t land up getting their health and wealth screwed up at this dreadful hospital. Dr Shekhar Salkar has been grossly misusing his position as Head of Goa BJP's Medical cell to illegally and unethically rake up huge financial benefits for Manipal hospital while also enriching his own pockets. The inquiry into the misdeeds at Manipal Hospital has to zero in around the main accused Dr. Shekhar Salkar the Cancer quack, who runs the commercial show there, by claiming that he is a qualified oncologist though he is not one. He neither has a degree nor even a diploma in either Oncology or Oncosurgery. Earlier this month an 81 year old Ribandar widow escaped the jaws of death after the family wisely shifted her to Goa Medical College at Bambolim after three days of languishing in pain at Manipal Hospital. Fortunately, she has now recovered and is keeping well. At Manipal Hospital the families of the patient are financial stripped naked being lumbered with massive and extremely exorbitant bills. For the family of someone already going through the pain of illness, it is added agony to being financially ripped off with very inflated bills. Unless you are a Minister or ruling party leader, other patients face the anguish of wrong diagnosis and off beam line of treatment. Manipal Hospital only outstandingly excels in the art of magnified billing. Manipal hospital seems to be lacking any Code of ethics. A concern for the well-being of the patient is never there, while they merrily go all out to secure and pursue their commercial interests. Under traditional medical ethics, the guiding principle is ‘do no harm’. When this basic guiding principle is compromised for whatever reason, but even worse when it is for financial reasons, then those in authority have a moral and civic duty to stand with those who have been directly or indirectly affected and say enough is enough and take the necessary action to stamp out these malpractices. There is abundant documentary evidence to the effect that the politically well-connected Dr Salkar has been unduly interfering and sabotaging the working of Government hospitals as well, only to benefit his Manipal Hospital. This financial exploitation of patients cannot be allowed to go on unpunished while the long arm of the law must catch up on the misdeeds of a very slimy and unethical Dr. Shekhar Salkar. Instead of going to this Manipal Hospital, a patient may be well advised to die in peace somewhere else. At least the family's life savings would not be swallowed by this proven vulture of a hospital. The family will also be saved the financial ordeal and trauma they would have to go through after losing their loved one there. I say all this with utmost responsibility and having documentary proof to back up all that I have stated. It is therefore imperative that the Government orders an inquiry so that Manipal alias Moneypal Hospital is nailed once and for all. This will save precious lives and of course give crematoriums, cemeteries and Kabristans a break. Adv. [Goanet] CATHOLIC CHURCH TODAY
It may be worth reflecting upon the state of the Catholic Church today. What do Goans think? More thoughtful Goan priests and bishops may feel all is not well with the Church but hesitate to criticise for fear of incurring the wrath of the Holy Men of the Vatican. After all, the Catholic Church in its present form is a European institution and its composition, doctrines and liturgy are Euro-made. However, the senior clerics of Europe are prepared to speak plainly and been doing so since the 1990s. Consider the following pronouncements by the Church leaders (Catholic and Protestant): April 1990: Society appears to have abandoned fundamental aspects of Christian morality... We can no longer claim to be a truly Christian society.' (Cardinal Basil Hume) October 2000: Britain is a society of atheists...tacit atheism prevails... only the old and the submissive retain their membership.' (Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey) Sept 2001: Christianity is close to being 'vanquished' in Britain and no longer influences people's lives (Cardinal Murphy-OConnor). Jan 2003: Britain has become a pagan country over the past half century in which people believe anything & everything... Christianity as a culture has gravely diminished...' (Cardinal M O'Connor in an interview with the Daily Telegraph.) So church leaders agree that Christianity has failed but amazingly none takes the blame and resigns. A major reason for church failure is the readiness of the Vatican to accept capitalism with its focus on wealth accumulation & consumerism, which only the rich can indulge in. When an institution fails in its fundamentals, it is usual for the leaders to take responsibility and to resign in good grace. But church posts are for life. So how can the institution recover with the same leaders & with the same mindset in power? - * Thereupon, I wrote to Cardinal O'Connor as follows: THE BRITISH CATHOLIC CHURCH IS IN CRISIS There are three major problems to confront. PROBLEM1: RACISM The William Macpherson report (1999) had noted that “racism exists within all organisations and institutions”. Racism is alive in the Church and in 1990 black Catholics had made a collective protest under a US-style Black Catholic Congress. They drew up a charter of observations and demands, among them: We are challenging racism in our country and in our church. We are the church. Our church should not take white society and European Structures as the Christian norm. The authorities may have been taken aback by these demands but the response came in the form of opaque little reports containing impersonal expressions of concern, general statements of principle etc but few concrete proposals and time-bound action plans. A Catholic Association for Racial Justice (CARJ) was set up – it was basically a symbolic body with no real power; it had just a few hundred members (in 2002) and was run by a committee of Blacks, with no involvement by top members of the Catholic hierarchy. So how could racial change come about? In October 2000, the Caribbean Director of CARJ complained in the Guardian that church racism was ‘driving minorities away’. The US Catholic weekly, National Catholic Reporter (09 Sept 2002) commented: “If we are united in the body of Christ, why would black Catholics feel the need to hold their own Congress? Why the need for separate Catholic service organisations… why the need for a separate pastoral plan for Black Catholics? The answer is RACISM. Dear Cardinal, I myself had written to you on a range of issues in June 2001. In reply, you expressed general concern about racism but did not bother to comment on any of the issues I had raised and ignored my request that you meet with ethnic groups on a regular basis. Rev David Haslam in his inspiring book Race for the Millennium (1996) had written: “Racism is a white problem and it is they who must deal with it. White people must be actively involved in the struggle for racial justice… they must accept black wisdom and leadership. White people must learn to live without always being in control” . PROBLEM2: declining vocations, declining church attendance. On Sun, 29 May 05, the Archdiocese of Westminster announced a dramatic shake-up of its parish structure in a Green (consultation) paper (see www.rcdow.org.uk). Parishes would have to close or merge and people learn to accept the idea of parishes without a resident priest. But why are vocations dropping? We are not told. One reason could be the undemocratic & RACIST structures of the church and parish. The Black Congress Charter had noted in 1990: The parish structure is flawed and too much power is vested in the parish priest. We urge parish communities to acknowledge black people’s reality and recognise the alienation that they often feel in their parishes. Peter Bird

[Goanet] Cry Me A Peaceful World, America.
If there was an anti-Nobel prize for World Peace, America should be taking it hands down. From destroying democratic leaders to benign monarchs, from upsetting peaceful countries to shattering the communism that tried to practice equity within their populations with what resources they could muster, America driven by greed, power hunger and a feeling of invincibility has tried to control from the mid twentieth century a world that was making its way in a manner that was not always good, but certainly better than when it applied its filthy hands to “improve” it. Dwelling on their recent Afghan humiliation, I have wondered, given the plethora of avenues available to them, where the money came from, for the Taliban to have funded themselves for 20 years. No one addressed it until I read this article by Krishn Kaushik in the Indian Express. It clearly explains Taliban revenues and sources of their weapons and more importantly allows the reader to view between the lines where either America was directly involved, or turned a blind eye to situations that worked directly against its own interests (like happily scoring into their own goalpost). Who would do that? Only greedy narcissists, protective of their own corrupt ambitions oblivious of whom they killed or harmed in the process, even their own people. The American foreign policy and military decision makers whether Democrats or Republicans together with the ruthless military-industrial complex, are indeed exactly such a skewed bunch of narrow but powerful groups and individuals. To return to the sources of Taliban revenues, here is a summary of the author’s conclusions: 1. The drug trade, illegal mining, extortion-taxes and Persian Gulf donations have formed the bulk of the Taliban’s well managed revenues. 2. Their arms have been received from Pakistan (origin America), Iran (America’s sworn enemy), the Afghan government leaks ( 43% of it all - source, America) and the rest from the final abject surrender with American knowledge). 3. With ultra modern arms now in the hands of the Taliban, both friends and foes among its neighbours fear this tenuous situation. Pakistan with half of the Taliban inside its borders), China (for its rebellious Muslim Uyghur population in next door Xinjiang), Iran fearful of America bribing the Taliban to cause harm to it’s natural religious enemy, and of course India the traditional friend of governments in Kabul but enemies of fundamentalist groups like the Taliban who have supported proxies against it. Re: [Goanet] Goa 1961 :: The Background (Valmiki Faleiro)
Just for debate: How much of Prince Henry "The Navigator" story is true? Martin Page (The World's First Global Village) questions the myths built up over Prince Henry "The Navigator". He writes about a 19th-century British book that cast him in this mould (p.82-83): A surprise best-seller of the London publishing scene of 1868 was a biography of a previously obscure Portuguese prince, who had died just over 400 years earlier. 'The Life of Prince Henry the Navigator' by Richard Major was the first work to be published about him outside Porto, the city of his birth (p.80) The propaganda significance of Mr Major's work, in the cause of British imperialism was to identify Prince Henrique as the principal Portuguese discoverer of these lands and people, in place of the actual ones. For Prince Henrique had an English mother and an English (strictly speaking an Irish) tutor, was completely fluent in the English language, and had been made a Knight of the Garter by his cousin King Henry IV. In short, if Prince Henrique wasn't entirely English, he was the nearest thing to it there could be. It followed, so the British argument went, that his genius and daring came from the English side of his parentage, as these were English, rather than continental European qualities A full chapter in Page's book is devoted to him, and surrounding myths. See also Prince Henry 'the Navigator': A Life (Peter Russell, New Haven: Yale University Press) a review of which is available on Jstor, which is by William A. Koelsch. Koelsch writes: Geographers know much less about Henry the Navigator than we think we do. What we think we know goes something like this: Dom Henrique of Portugal (1394-1460) was a scholarly pioneer who de voted his life to the expansion of geographical knowledge. He retired at age 22 to the remote promontory of Sagres in the Algarve, and remained there for the next 40 years. There he established an astronomical observatory, a map library, and a school for scientific navigators and explorers that became, in geographer Peter Hugill's words, "the world's first technical 'university'" (World Trade Since 1451, 109). There he studied and taught his bold navigators, the rudiments of classical and Islamic geography, as well as astronomy, mathematics, cartography, and navigation. He was aided by a large assemblage of Christian, Muslim, and Jewish scholars, cartographers, and ship designers, who lived there near his palace It is indeed an impressive portrait Unfortunately, little or none of the story is true. [Goanet] THE LOOT AND PLUNDER AT GSIDC MUST STOP
In reflecting on the incompetence of Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) and its botch up execution of the new High Court building, memories go back to 2014. I had then petitioned the High Court against GSIDC over its substandard and chaotic concretization of the Miramar-Dona Paula Road. While the GSIDC assured that we would get a State of the Art road, with cycling and jogging tracks etc etc, the High Court felt that we should trust the expertise of the GSIDC. The rest is history. Now the rank deficiency in proficiency of GSIDC is at the very doorstep of the High Court for all to see. Coincidentally the same politically well connected contractor who messed up the Miramar-Dona Paula Road was also involved in our High Court cock-up. . GSIDC having failed in project after project must now be thoroughly audited. This High Court fiasco must ensure that responsibility is fixed. The buck stops at the door of its Chairman Pramod Sawant, a post he has continued to hold even after becoming Chief Minister. Those responsible deserve to be sacked and face the rigors of law. We need to know who at GSIDC made hay while the sun shined. Public funds must be judiciously spent and cannot be pocketed. What has transpired in the construction of our High Court building has undoubtedly been a grand ‘daylight highway loot’. Adv. Re: [Goanet] Chandor Sarpanch Exposed Over Bogus Construction Plan
Hi Roland. Appreciate your attempt to help. The fact is, our panchayats are filled with businessmen for whom cheating and fraud are essential traits. Imagine, any self-respecting sarpanch creeping like a thief late at night into the market with labourers and building two stinkbombs there despite the consensus in the village that public toilets must only be in secluded corners and far away from people's homes! The Chandor sarpanch used to work as a seafarer (the term preferred now) and now runs a shop which stocks foreign goods, which in earlier days people called smuggled goods. It, therefore, shouldn't be tough to fabricate a market plan which can turn out to be yet another source of income. The deputy sarpanch, for his part, undertakes small-time construction jobs and sells property, and is known to find the post of pancha very lucrative, if you know what I mean. In fact, it was this guy, hailing from the same house as Menezes Braganza, who pulled the toilet for the tintto from a corner in the church yard, where the priests logically wanted to put it up, and started this whole mess which has been going on since 2006. I could go on and on, but I'll spare you, and goanetters... Of course, the villagers' fightback against the sullying of Chandor's fish market and village centre did have the effect of delivering Goa's first-ever people's plan, which went on to serve as a model for the Goa People's Plan, which came a while later. Titled Chandor Ganv Vhodd Zaum, the Chandor plan took inputs from people in all wards of the village before it was published and distributed locally; an e-version (how quaint this sounds!) was also circulated online. It was quite well-received throughout Goa. (Plans are on to upload it to Youtube soon). Once again, muito obrigado for taking an interest. Will keep you, and goanet, posted.
