[Goanet] BABUSH MONSERRATE IS A DISGRACE FOR PANAJI

2021-12-12 Thread Aires Rodrigues
Today on former Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar’s birth anniversary, we
recollect the courage he displayed in 2005 to strip Babush Monserrate of
the Town and Country Planning portfolio due to the gross corruption with
regards to that Regional Plan

Panaji MLA Babush Monserrate should look into his own backyard before
making allegations against Ministers.

Has merit ever been a criteria at the Corporation of the City of Panaji
which he remote controls, now through his very incapable son who continues
as an apprentice Mayor. Nothing more needs to be said about the rampant
corruption and nepotism at the CCP. Babush Monserrate has always opposed an
IAS officer being posted there as he wouldn’t be able to manipulate the
affairs.

Less said the better on the malfunctioning of the Greater Panaji and
Planning Authority which Babush Monserrate heads. An absolute den of
corruption. Builders and businessmen are ripped off to the hilt and have to
face the consequences of retribution if they don’t pay up the ransom sought.

Could Babush Monserrate tell us whether his two monstrous hotels at Miramar
are in compliance of even a single rule or regulation? Absolute abuse of
Power.

It is an irony that a 8th Std fail and someone who dared attack the Panaji
Police Station is the MLA of Goa’s capital city. That a rape case is
pending against this MLA is only an added disgrace. It couldn’t get any
worse. So what merit is Babush Monserrate mumbling about.

2021-12-12 Thread Linken Fernandes
Much obliged, Roland and Adolfo. I was waiting for Roland's post to appear
here before responding to it. All the same, your double solidarity is most
welcome, and I expect to bring about a happy resolution of the issue with
the Christians in Chandor, both priests and faithful, recovering, at long
last, the prodigal essence of their founder's dictum, Love thy neighbour
as thyself, and turning into good humans. In other words, no dumping a
trash-sorting facility, nor a toilet, where it will trouble the immediate
neighbours, as well as the entire village. Do unto others as thou wouldst
have them do unto you, no less!

There are grim tidings, too, though: some of the geniuses who threw up the
idea of a toilet in the tinto in front of people's houses are planning a
comeback, along with reinforcements of more of their kind! God save us!
(Seriously!). Anyway, for now, let me leave you with the familiar threat,
watch this space!!

[Goanet] Damodar Mauzo's Clear Stream of Reason (Times of India, 12/12/2021)

2021-12-12 Thread V M
(note: no link available, but the clipping is attached below)

Non-stop jubilation continues to enliven India’s literary landscape,
after the December 7 thunderbolt of good news that Damodar “Bhai”
Mauzo was named the 57th Jnanpith Award winner.

Previous winners of the country’s most prestigious honour for
“outstanding contribution toward literature” constitute a veritable
pantheon of our most illustrious writers: U. R. Ananthamurthy,
Mahasweta Devi, Nirmal Verma, Girish Karnad.

Now, just 15 years after Ravindra Kelekar became the first Goan
awardee, it is deeply moving that our great man from Majorda will take
his rightful place amongst the foremost luminaries of Indian letters.

Here, it must be acknowledged that we have rarely witnessed such an
outpouring of pure joy in Goa, let alone about an author winning a
prize. These spontaneous celebrations are yet another testament to the
character and calibre of the man, and the quality of his life.

Born in the Estado da India in 1944, Bhai has experienced all the
rollercoaster chapters of Goa’s contemporary history, and written
about every bit of it with tremendous felicity and insight.

What is more, far ahead of his contemporaries, he has never wavered in
embodying the open-hearted humanism that is the heart of our most
precious civilizational values, what Bakibab Borkar used to describe
as vegllench munisponn.

What has Bhai not done, in service to his land and his language?

Though wonderfully fluent in Marathi, Hindi and English (with a solid
grasp of Portuguese as well) he chose to commit to his mother tongue,
and has purposefully contributed an irreplaceable oeuvre of novels,
short stories, essays and journalism to its literature.

Bhai fought for independent statehood, and the constitutional
recognition of Konkani. Then, in the aftermath of those tense battles,
he went on to become our most distinguished cultural representative.
No writer from India’s smallest state ever stood taller on the
national stage.

All that has been evident for decades, but we must note that Bhai has
been shamefully cold-shouldered in his home state of Goa, which never
put his name forward for national awards he merits, and failed to take
advantage of his superior competence at the helm of a suitable
cultural institution. It is not too late, of course. A richly deserved
Gomantak Vibhushan Award could help rectify the injustice.

The marvellous twist in this tale is that Bhai himself is far above
any petty wrangling for recognition. He is as always: gentle and
gentlemanly, warm, loving and affable. As a result of his profound
decency, he is universally beloved, which is why so many people from
so many places are exulting in this moment. When he heard the news in
Kashmir, the acclaimed journalist Yusuf Jameel sent “Mubarak badi” on
Twitter, and from Assam, the superb novelist Mitra Phukan rejoiced on
Facebook, “wonderful news! Most well-deserved.”

Both the latter, along with hundreds of others, know Bhai from yet
another avatar: as the co-founder and co-curator of the unique Goa
Arts + Literature Festival, which achieved its ten-year anniversary in
2019, just before Covid-19 locked down the world. That quirky cultural
fiesta like no other was initially conceived by Bhai himself, and is
co-hosted by International Centre Goa and the Goa Writers group, of
which he is a staunch and supportive member.

GALF is where I too (as co-curator) have seen his formidable
capacities in action. The festival’s steady rise from tiny to teeming
is due to Bhai’s efforts above all. From inception, the best writers
have blessed us with their presence because of their respect and
regard for him.

The renowned author Ramachandra Guha shared this with me this week:
“Even when professing to espouse progressive causes, other famous
Indian writers stand apart from their society; they have different
lifestyles and move in a more restricted (one might say elite) social
circle from those around them.”

It’s different with our Jnanpith Award winner: “What struck me about
Bhai in the couple of days I spent with him some years ago is how
seamlessly he merged with his village, his neighbourhood, his state.”

Back in 2018, the great writer Amitav Ghosh (who has lived part-time
in Goa for many years) became the first writer of English to win the
Jnanpith.

When I emailed him about Bhai’s victory, this world-famous writer
reacted with exactly the same kind of unbounded excitement that I –
and so many of the rest of us – felt upon learning that this time at
least, the right man won.

“I am absolutely delighted,” said Ghosh. “Damodar is a great writer
and a great soul, who has been unflinching in his embrace of Goa's
richly pluralistic heritage. His courage in standing up to bigotry and
communalism is truly exemplary. In choosing to honour his work, the
Jnanpith Foundation has once again affirmed its commitment to the
preservation and celebration of India's wonderfully diverse,
multilingual literary traditions.

[Goanet] WHAT THE STARS FORETELL FOR PANAJI

2021-12-12 Thread Stephen Dias
WHAT THE STARS FORETELL FOR PANAJI

BY Stephen Dias
   Social Activist
  Dona Paula
  9422443110
  13 th December 2021

The election to Goa Assembly will be done by February 2022. There are
various aspirants for the post of Panjim MLA in the various political
parties of Goa. Panjim being the capital city is important to all the
political parties. Winning Panjim is a matter of prestige in Goa and any
party which wins Goa would aim and expect to go to win the parliamentary
elections of 2024.

Issues before Panjim are many;
1. We don't have a proper garbage management plant in place.
2. The sewage released from Casinos is dumped in the Sewage Treatment plant
(STP) at Tonca despite exceeding its capacity resulting in pollution of the
St. Inez Creek and the river Mandovi.
3. The garbage of Panjim is not scientifically treated and the garbage
plant planned at Bainguinim is so far a non-starter.

Now, we have a long time patron in charge of Panjim vying for the Panjim
seat on a BJP ticket but the court case of the stoning of the Panjim Police
station is like a sword over his head. The hard-core BJP party workers want
Utpal Parrikar to be the Panjim candidate. Time only will tell what will
happen.

Interestingly the Congress is fighting hard to win Panjim which they lost
when Babush won on the Congress ticket and defected to BJP. At the moment
Congress have many aspirants for Panjim -- Some of which I can count are
Babush Monserrate, Utpall Parrikar, Uday Madkaikar, Surendra Furtado,
Menino de Cruz among others.

Among the other parties the Aam Aadmi Party has got the very well educated
and clean politician Valmiki Naik. It is not known yet if the TMC and MGP
union which is just formed is going to fill a common candidate for Panjim.

What is very important for the residents of Panjim to consider is who among
these candidates will be best suited to meet the most critical challenges:

1. Will the Casinos from River Mandovi be removed.
2. Will the candidate be able to give a Garbage Treatment plant for Panjim.
3. Whether the St Inez creek and Mandovi will be desilted and sewage
pollution in the river would be stopped.
4. Whether the construction of the monstrous and environmentally dangerous
terminal building on the jetty near the existing Captain of Ports will be
stopped.
5. Will he or she address the parking woes of the city as Casino vehicles,
scooters, tourists, tempos, tankers, tour buses are choking all the
arteries of Panjim streets and making loud noises not allowing the nearby
residents to sleep and to move due to traffic congestion on pavements and
roads. There is heavy dust pollution and buses moving without Pollution
certificates thus they too emitting black smoke throughout their journey
with impunity in front of traffic policemen who fail to issue Challans. All
the above are causing respiratory ailments which can have far reaching
consequences, specially with Covid infections starting to spike again, and
must not be neglected by those seeking votes from Panjimites.
5. MIRAMAR beach has turned into an eye sore where you can see number of
illegal construction including a huge Samadi construction is in progress.
To shut People's mouth a recreation facility and garden has been made.
Those who frequent from Miramar to Dona Paula know the whole stretch of
road is smelling of sewage and bad smell at certain pockets specially near
the new Vivanta hotel and also near the Goa Science Centre area.

We have already seen the BJP has no interest in removing the Casinos. In
fact since they have been in power for more than 10 years we have to
acknowledge they are incapable of doing any of the things on this list. All
they can do is promise a Smart City. Notice I said 'promise'. That's all
our Goan politicians can typically do. Make promises they can't deliver.

Only our government could have the nerve to talk about Panjim as a Smart
City while you have multiple illegalities going on and even basics like the
number of huge trees fallen down are unattended. Our roads are in a
dilapidated condition with a number of pot holes all over Panjim. Even
their pride and joy - the Atal Sethu - can't be used half the time.

I think the best symbol of the plight we are in is one of the streetlights
put up with great fanfare costing lakhs each, which stands broken and
destroyed for some years now... Abandoned to be consumed by the elements.
Not even worthy of being removed apparently.

The government only knows how to spend our money on the facade. The house
may be falling down but they will pay a huge amount to cover it in poor
quality paint and pretend all is well.

Let's wait and watch if any candidate will care enough to solve the
structural issues that face Panjim instead of only putting on a show before
the elections.

[Goanet] Luring women with bribes

These bribes go directly to the husbands. From the class of recipients, the
husband
who wont do that, is not yet born in all of India. This should stop
including giving tickets to women at all levels of political life. All the

Look around, u know what I mean. Also with the exception of a known few,
their husbands actually run the show
