[Goanet] COVID WORSENING IN GOA?

2021-12-31 Thread Stephen Dias
Covid cases are rising in our tiny state of Goa and all the newspapers
report that the crisis is worsening in this state. This could be the
failure to curb entry in the borders and crowding on all the beaches of
Goa. The weddings and entertainment halls including cinema theatres are
also seeing large crowds. The Government must take strict measures to
implement directions to authorities such as Police, Municipalities,
Panchayats and Corporation to supervise and stop crowds assembling in large
numbers. Also I have seen near my residence hundreds of people everyday and
even after late hours crowding for jobs with Health Minister Viswajit Rane
encouraging and allowing them to attend interviews inside his Bunglow at
Dona Paula.
Similarly every politician is suddenly trying to help the voters in their
area to get jobs without realising the crowds are getting larger and larger
which surely will affect the virus spread in Goa. This must be curtailed
immediately before an alarming situation worsens in this state. It lies on
our Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to give such directives to his politicians
to stop encouraging crowds seeking jobs. Applications for jobs should be
entertained only by government authorities through proper channels and not
by politicians at their residences.

[Goanet] A new year of hope

2021-12-31 Thread Nelson Lopes
A NEW YEAR OF HOPE

Rejoice over the year past,
Left all its marks , trails at last,
There were moments of joy to rejoice,
Inspite of times to make difficult choice.

By and large blessed with good health,
Not exactly a Midas touch to turn into wealth,
Millions and friends suffered covid blow,
Life and events were'nt filled with glow, to know.

It is a blessing and gift to some to live,
To praise Divine and thanks to give,
Forget the insults and wronged forgive,
In the goodness of human nature to believe.

Tragic accidents many lives are lost,
Deaths in sickness not save at any cost,
Covid has caused economic misery and pain,
A hope of new dawn, but omicron strikes again.

Schools and colleges forced to close ,
Many have yet to receive the second dose,
A booster and children jab now to tide,
As Omicron threatens spread world wide.

Prices of food have hit the roof,
Fuel prices rise without a proof,
Medicines and fish are beyond reach,
Good times ahead politicians preach.

Transport and hospitality business hit,
Manufacture and industry eased a bit,
Celebrations ,Functions are put on hold,
Participants indoor ,outdoor services limited measures bold.

People are mostly confined to the house,
Work from home facilityv no grouse ,
Lack of public conveyance difficult to cope,
Fear of infections to decrease , the ray of hope.

Scientist, doctors work to stop the curse,
Vaccine manufacturers enriching their purse,
In near future, there seems to be no end,
Boosters will be regular drain on resources to spend .

Guards let down people exhausted but still try,
Masks, sanitizers, social distances is a battle cry,
Social interaction, Visits cut out of fear,
No embraces, shaking hands ,message clear.

The new year to be normal hope and pray,
The rapid surge, virus is here to stay,
Neither lethal , or stretch services they say,
Celebrations, elections sure to fuel its way.

Confusion in signs and symptoms occur,
Double or booster dose infections recur,
The phenomenal surge the world has to face,
Warning in India , virus soon to embrace .

The nature and Divine sends a message to heed,
To curtail, reduce our lust and greed ,
Urgent need to renew reform our life indeed ,
Stop pride ,ego to fuel and feed.

The pharma, sanitizers masks companies want virus alive,
Enormous revenues, benefits to derive,
Sinking firms now surfacefloat and survive,
A political war, flourishing economies to deprive.

World desires ,,prays to usher in a happy new year,
Free from virus infections death and fear,
Japanese Nobel laureate voches,it is artificial and clear
Spreads rapidly in cold and hot regions far and near.

[Goanet] A new year of hope with omicron

2021-12-31 Thread Nelson Lopes
Wish and pray to usher in a new year of hope,
Courage, strength and grace odds to cope,
A trust that worst of past year will not repeat,
The surge and urge of omicron virus to defeat.

Deaths and sufferings will soon be over,
Sick with mild infections will soon recover,
Hospitalizations, ventilators, oxygen will not need,
No mass migrations ,provisions for poor to feed.

Vaccination doses now avaisble with ease,
Booster on demand as and when you please,
Children below 18 years will be covered soon,
A blessing ,a gift to youngster, a boon.

Schools and colleges are likely to start,
Games, activities exams too will form a part,
Buses, trains ,planes , will soon ply ,run
Eating out ,watching cinema, dramas, sports will be fun.

Celebrations parties functions will open,
No permissions, pass or coupon ,
Embrace ,shake hands and kiss,
Visits to friends, religious services not to miss

No shortages and facilities for loved ones to burry ,
No more in secrecy, lonely and in a hurry,.
Hospitals, nurses, doctors avaiable to serve
To poor, sick suffering and those in need and deserve.

Fuel prices will come down, be cheap
Affordable food ,fish vegetables ,no need to weep
The surging costs of drugs will be less,
At hospitals, markets, bus stands shopping malls, no more mess.

Omicron though highly infectious need not fear ,
Symptoms, signs are illusive ,not sharp and clear,
Isolation is a mustto keep infections at bay,
Partial lockdowns will beimposed in some way.

Activities interactions will be near normal
Restrictions of masks, social distance just formal,
Pharma companies will instill infections fear
To promote Boosters their motives clear

Govt will increase taxes to offer it free,
To reduce burden on health services infrastructure agree,

The annormal atmosphere of last two years will disappear ,
The promise of life as before will soon appear.

Virologist will wipe out the curse for sure,
Like all diseases discover novel cure,
New effective pills are on their way
Pharmas are in race to develop nasal spray

Overburden Doctors ,nurses will now relax,
Govt will be forced to reduce revenue and tax
People will move about in their life with freedom and ease
Engage in their activities and behaviour as they please.

[Goanet] A historical blunder

2021-12-31 Thread Nelson Lopes
Historical decision or blunder
Temples in Karnataka were managed and run by Temple committees for
centuries. It is possible that these committees were Supreme in taking
decisions.Whether these funds were applied properly to maintenance of the
institutions and its devotees is a matter of conjecture..Why did the Govt
take over only Hindu Temple wealth money only in Karnataka ,in a secular
country and not that of the mosques, Gurdwara, waqt Boards, Churches etc.
NOW does the Govt apprehends that BJP which ruled Karnataka over longest
periods has been found wanting, under a cloud of doubts in
accountability? The grouse is that such funds should be specially deployed
for its development and Hindu Community and not allotted to any welfare
measure not related to its maintenance and its Hindu community. Why does
Congress feel that it is historical blunder and threat to opose it?
When the bill comes for discussions and debates ,ammendments can be
suggested to plug the loopholes of misuse or personal welfare,
disguised in any manner
The committee should be responsible to the Trust of the Temple, which is
competent to scrutinize monitor and sanction . It is absurd that Govt
alone can be trusted and not anyone else in the deployment of funds.
The Temple wealth and funds are a milk cow for Govt to use it as and where
it desires ,not necessarily for the purpose of specific Temple or community
around
There is apprehension and rightly so under present Govt that the
committees will be loaded with RSS men to manipulate the process and thus
misuse the funds to promote other Hindu programmers anywhere for the
benefit of Hindu Community in general.Checks and balances can be
introduced to address any fears
Safeguards can be built in regarding appointment, tenure, emoluments and
the accounting, and audit process can be streamlined .With best of
measures and intentions, where large amounts of donations pour in
regularly there can be scope for mismanagement, forgery cheating etc and
this true of any such Trusts and committees.Vigilance is the key of safety,
unless there is convince without scrutiny if the whole committee and Trust
operating in tandem. If the fence eats the grass it is ultimate rare
disaster and not a common occurrence
The Temple Trust and committee is definitely more accountable, reliable,
subject to local audit for integrity and transparency.

[Goanet] HAPPY NEW YEAR

2021-12-31 Thread Aires Rodrigues
My dear friends,

A very personal New Year greetings to you all. May 2022 see better days for
you and our Goa at large. A year fully loaded with happiness and new
positive achievements.

It is so enriching to start every day expressing my thoughts and views
without fear or favour, while sharing it on social media with lakhs of
people all over the world through Facebook, Whatsapp, Twitter and other
internet-based mailing lists. Your positive feedback has been most
encouraging and makes this small daily contribution all the more worthwhile.

If you like my posts please share it with all your friends and groups on
which you are a member.

We all have to encourage everyone, in particular the youth to express their
views and opinions fearlessly and candidly. Learning as many languages as
possible is an asset and must be encouraged.

2022 more than any other year is crucial for us as individuals and for Goa
as we will be electing 40new MLAs who will form the next Government for the
coming five years. We have to make the right choice and cannot afford
another experiment of zero governance and failed promises which have ruined
Goa over the last decade. Let us for once choose individuals of the highest
integrity with a burning desire to serve the electorate and the common good
and not for the lust of power for their own personal greed.

A better future is just round the corner if we are prepared to grasp it
with both hands. We will only reap what we sow!

Let us remember the wise words of Mahatma Gandhi. ‘Be the change you wish
to see in the world. A small group of determined and like-minded people can
change the course of history!’

We have to stay united to Save our state from further destruction.

Books: Remo Fernandes’ writing debut

Fernandes’s autobiography tells the untold story of his birthplace Goa

(Inset) Remo (above) with his partner Zenia in May 2018, soon after they

If you remember the song Humma Humma in the movie Bombay, you recall the
world of music it opened to you thanks to indie pop and folk music star
Remo Fernandes.Today, Remo, the Padma Shri awardee who began his musical
journey with a mouth organ, before mastering other instruments, is
celebrating decades of his time navigating the music scene in India and
Portugal via his eponymous autobiography, Remo (Harper Collins).

The desire to write an autobiography had first germinated about six to nine
years ago, when Remo penned three chapters. “I’ve always loved writing and
I wanted to encapsulate the Goa I grew up in,” says the musician who
shifted to Portugal in 2015-2016.

Bucket list

Remo returned to writing during the pandemic as part of a bucket list of
things he wishes to do. This was right after he completed another thing off
the list—a project making music for Mother Teresa.

When the world locked down in 2020, Remo had been in Goa for some down
time. Unable to travel back to Portugal, he found inspiration in his old
Goan house that has a garden in the front and rice fields behind it.

Playing with The Beat 4, Indiana and The Savages at his 50th birthday
concert in Panjim, Goa

“The solitude was just what I needed for reminiscing,” says the Panjim boy.

“When I started, I had no idea how a book was structured. I got a literary
agent recommended by my friend Amitav Ghosh, and that‘s when the topic got
a precise shape.”

The most difficult part?

“You may want to be very honest while writing, but you have to remember to
protect the privacy of the person involved in the episode.” That, and
reliving a road accident after a show at IIT Kanpur when he lost four of
his band members who had played with him for 12 years.

“I was palpably affected when I was writing those two chapters because that
was like losing family,” says the 68-year-old.

Go, Goa, Gone

One of the biggest highlights of Remo’s book is his memories of early
post-Independence Goa. “Your roots are a part of you because your childhood
was either so beautiful that you loved it or terrible. My roots are of just
plain happiness in the Goa I grew up in. I know people who are still
falling in love with the Goa of those days. I was eight when the Portuguese
left and till I was 18, nothing had changed in Goa. There were no illegal
structures, nothing. And there are no books by Goans about those days, only
by those who moved to Goa much later,” he explains.

Remo’s eponymous autobiography, Remo (Harper Collins)

“I miss the simplicity of life, the honesty and warmth of the people, and
everyone having more time on their hands. There’s violence in Goa today,
which was unheard of then,” he says.

Musically too, it’s rare to find gatherings today where people will just
bring out instruments and jam. “Today, people pick recorded music,” he says.

What of the EDM festivals the state is now famous for? “Ninety-nine per
cent of Goans don’t identify with the music being played there. You could
host these festivals anywhere else in the world and they’d get the same
crowd. EDM and techno started with foreigners settling in Goa. There’s even
a trance known as Goa trance because it comes from the state. But this is
music produced for parties and a totally different parallel in terms of
culture,” Remo says.

Ask him about Bollywood and Remo says he doesn’t give it much thought. “I
respect originality and creativity. Today, a lot of prominence is given to
simplistic melodies that everyone can catch after one hearing, thus
replacing essence and soul. Another trend is to make soft melodic songs
that sound the same. Everyone sounds like an American artistes of their
choice, but in Hindi,” he says.

He mourns the passing of indigenous individuality. “Our folk music is
punchier and has a flavour that appeals to everyone,” he says. “When I
first went to Bombay as a student, I formed a band with people from the
slums who walked into the local trains and played fiery rhythms on their
battered drums. That’s the originality we are missing today.”

[Goanet] Sunset of 2021 and Sunrise of 2022

2021-12-31 Thread Pratapananda Naik, SJ
Sunset of 2021 and Sunrise of 2022
Time is an abstract and relative concept used only by human beings. In time
there is neither OLD nor NEW. For our convenience and understanding we use
the terms today, yesterday, tomorrow and so on. Hence, I too have used the
term “Sunset of 2021” for the ending of the year 2021 and “Sunrise 2022”
for the beginning of the year 2022. Sunset and Sunrise have their own
implications and meanings in our life.
In spite of the clouds of Covid-19 hovering over us
with the generous help of friends of 3L
we reached out in our own limited way
to make the life of 3L hopeful, meaningful, and cheerful.
We provided them stationery, schoolbags, uniform, footwear,
clothes, mobiles, a laptop, school fee and private tuition fee for some,
Medicare and travel allowance for the needy.

Their needy parents too got new clothes.
One of the 3L students who did not want to pursue
further studies beyond tenth standard and learning tailoring
was provided with a new sewing machine.
Five joint families’ house was repaired and painted.
Their damaged tin sheets’ roof was replaced with a concrete slab and
terrace.
Two poor families got a joint new house with terrace.
Throughout the year four families were provided provisions.
20 Christmas hampers were distributed.
Seven families were provided with Christmas Lunch.
One of the 3L students was provided with a part-time job.
And this Litany is still lengthy...
More than all these, we provided them
Hope, Love, Optimistic vision, and Dignity
while wiping a few tears of pain from their eyes
and replacing with tears of Joy and gratitude.

Though many past angels disappeared from the scene;
those who were close to us ignored, overlooked, or passed by;
God did not abandon His beloved 3L.
He sent His new archangels and unknown “Samaritans”.
Therefore, this Mission of 3L still continues.

On behalf of 3L students 🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏾‍♂️and their illiterate families
I as a coordinator of 3L Mission,
thank you 👏for your support🤝🏻, wishes🌷, and prayers🛐.

May the Year 2022 bring Good News to all
especially to the marginalized 3L.

May God continue to bless🌧️ and protect☂️ you and your family
in the Year 2022.
In the words of Göran Persson
“Let our New Year’s resolution be this:
We will be there for one another
as fellow members of humanity,
in the finest sense of the word.”

Have a Joyful 2022 New Year.

was like losing family,” says the 68-year-old.

[Goanet] Panjim spared on New Year's Eve

2021-12-31 Thread Rajan Parrikar
Thank God for small mercies. But the Baga-Calangute area was probably not
as fortunate from the filthy paws of the Delhi pigs (*).

(*) "Delhi pig," a term with origins in the uncouth, pompous, uppity Indian
from Delhi who has either parked himself in Goa or visits Goa, is now used
to describe any ill-mannered Indian who sets foot in Goa. Research has
shown that actual pigs are better behaved and far more likable than the
Delhi pig.
