[Goanet] Lucilla Pacheco

2022-02-21 Thread Roland Francis
Our fascination for movies and its charisma over generations have made us
overlook the works of musicians who contributed in the making of legendary
composition in films.

One such forgotten lone star of the 50s and 60s, Lucila Pacheco, a Jazz
pioneer, who was a pianist, saxophone player and the first person to introduce
an electronic instrument, Solovox, to Indian musicians, deserves a special
mention.

Lucilla Pacheco (nee Mathias) was born in 1929 to a family from Sao Mathias, in
Divar island of Goa. Her maternal grandfather, nicknamed "Rogddu" was a
violinist, while her paternal grandfather was known by the instrument of which
he was a virtuoso – “Boncao”, (Konkani word for double bass). Her father,
Mathias, who moved to Colombo in Ceylon, taught music and ran an instrument
shop there. Her husband, George Pacheco, also from Goa, apprenticed at her
father’s shop in Ceylon.

Lucilla, with her musician husband George, moved to Bombay from Ceylon in 1948
to try their luck on the rising scene of Jazz Music. Her husband was a
Saxophonist and Lucila was a Pianist as well as Saxophonist.

Lucila, who passed the exams of Trinity College and Royal School of Music,
London as a Pianist, began working as accompanying musician in Metro Theater
and as a Piano demonstrator in L.M.Furtado & Co. music stores. She started her
professional life giving Piano lessons.

In an era when many people purchased music sheets to play at home, Lucila would
perform the scores they contemplated purchasing, to show them how good the
tunes could sound. She was soon invited to be part of Mickey Correa’s all star
band that was a brooding ground for swing musicians. She played under the
leadership of the Anglo- Indian band leader, Ken Mac and Chic Chocolate, who
were the top dollar Jazz musicians of their time. By end of 40’s Lucila joined
the Hindi film industry and regularly recorded under arranger Anthony
Gonsalves. By 1955, she was quite popular. Although she was a regular Pianist,
she played the electronic keyboard Solovox, for the first time in Hindi Film
music in the 60s.

Her first ever fusion album of Indian and Jazz
music (Raaga Jazz Style (1968)) composed by composer duo Shankar Jaikishan, had
names of all the musicians on its LP Cover, including that of Lucila Pacheco.

She spent her later years giving piano lessons in her Bandra Hill Road
residence and quietly passed away in 1989, at the age of 60.

[Goanet] IS PANJIM A SMART CITY?

2022-02-21 Thread Stephen Dias
In this 21st century this is way the number of lines such Telephone, water,
underground electric lines and other heavy cabling are laid down closely
all together? When one of the line is attended by a worker for repair work,
he is bound to damage other lines thus making it difficult to other
department workers to find the fault. Then again digging? How many times
Panjim roads will have to cut? Is this so called Smart City of Panaji?

Suggestion:

1. Get all department officials together and plan to execute the work with
minimum damage.
2. Why not have a bigger conduit strong pipe where these lines can be
passed separately and safely?
3. Proper mapping of cabling lines drawings must be supplied to all these
department for record.
4. High tension lines ( HT) must be completely separate from all these
lines to avoid electrical leakage which can cause electrocution or death to
these workers.

[Goanet] FRANCISCO SARDINHA OWES A PUBLIC APOLOGY

2022-02-21 Thread Aires Rodrigues
The recent demeaning outburst by South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha against
former Chief Minister late Manohar Parrikar was awful and in bad taste.

It was very improper for a parliamentarian to have said such unpleasant
remarks against a person who is no more and cannot defend himself. It is
basic and common courtesy to wish someone who has departed Rest in Peace.
To disturb the soul in such an undignified manner is disrespectful and
flies in the face of human decency.

Does Mr. Sardinha need to be reminded that he became Chief Minister of Goa
on 24th November 1999 only with the blessings of Manohar Parrikar? It is
another issue that he lost his chair in less than a year on 23rd October
2000 while on a trip to Australia to see the kangaroos.

The Congress Party ought to have severely reprimanded its MP for having
passed such disgusting comments against late Manohar Parrikar.

Mr. Sardinha has displayed his immaturity despite having a long political
innings before which he was a school teacher. Glad was not his student,
otherwise would have been taught wrong values in life.

Personally, I have had a lot of differences with Manohar Parrikar but after
his death eventually I have made Peace with the departed Soul with whom
hopefully I will meet up someday in that better world. But until that
inevitable day, may the late Manohar Parrikar rest in eternal peace.
