[Goanet] Hoddos!

2022-06-30 Thread Roland Francis
The younger generation can laugh at us all they want, for being:
Tech illiterate
Racist
Saving more than we should
Victims of scams
Against common law marriages and bast**d children

But where we laugh at them is for being hoddos. Not to mention their declining
sperm count. We got bald at 50 plus if that, but they start exhibiting baldness
at 25 no matter how much they try to hide it with crew cuts, ‘pretend’ shaven
heads and the like.

The younger women are getting more vigorous, the younger men are looking more
tired.

What does João have to say?

[Goanet] Horse Trading More Lucrative Than Horse Racing

2022-06-30 Thread Roland Francis
India’s Finance Minister had all the right intentions when she proposed a tax
on horse trading. Probably being advised that her party the BJP would carry the
heavy burden of the tax, she quickly corrected herself to say she meant Horse
Racing.

“The GST Council yesterday deferred a decision on levying a 28% tax on casinos,
online gaming, horse racing and lottery pending more consultations with
stakeholders, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said. But while saying
so, a delicious Freudian slip was made: she said there would henceforth be a
tax on “horse trading” – the sport the BJP just played in Maharashtra – before
correcting herself to say “horse racing”. Watch here

[Goanet] 44. The Curtain Falls (Valmiki Faleiro)

2022-06-30 Thread Goanet Reader
44. The Curtain Falls

By Valmiki Faleiro
valmi...@gmail.com

The Portuguese were the first Europeans to enter India and
the last to exit. They were in Cochin, when Goans led by
Mhala Pai Sar Desai together with Vijayanagar's naval captain
at Honavar, Thimayya, a friend of the Portuguese, met their
governor in India.

Afonso de Albuquerque was refitting his ships for
an important mission at Ormuz. Thimayya and Mhal
Pai somehow convinced him that the time was
opportune to liberate Goa from the oppressive rule
of Bijapur. On his second attempt on 25 November
1510, Albuquerque succeeded in chasing the
  Bijapuris out of Goa.

Knowing that Albuquerque was chiefly interested in oriental
spices, Mhal Pai -- arguably the most powerful Goan at the
time (as seen, he had sardeshmukhi rights over some 500 to
800 villages) -- perhaps expected Albuquerque to take a fee
for the job and return to Cochin, leaving Goa to be ruled by
him. Thimayya may have also had his own plans and ambitions.

Albuquerque recognised Goa's strategic importance on the west
coast of India and decided to stay here for good. He had
grand designs of creating a mare nostrum (our sea) for
Portugal, with centrally-located Goa as HQ. Projecting
himself as a liberator and not a conqueror, he was good to
the natives and assured them that his quarrel was with the
Muslims and not with Hindus. He did not interfere with the
local religion or customs, save banning Sati.

The rot set in after he was deposed through court intrigue in
Lisbon and his resultant death in December 1515. His
'liberation', eventually, turned out to be a mere replacement
of the Bijapuri with the Portuguese. Goans, however,
continued to worship him as a demigod. It is said that when
they faced oppression after his death, Goans prayed at
Albuquerque's tomb.

Albuquerque was Portugal's greatest strategian in Asia. The
foundations he laid enabled Portugal to rule the waves from
Asia to Europe with a few strategically located forts along
the sea route for about a century (the sixteenth) -- and hold
Goa for four and half centuries.

The Portuguese did many things, good and bad, during that
time. For the world, they opened the Age of Discovery and
the first signs of a world economy. For India, they started
a plant gene bank at the southernmost tip of Mumbai, took
India's mango to the world and brought to India tropical
fruits and veggies -- even tobacco! Without them, we would
have continued flavouring our food with black pepper. No
chillies, pav-bhaji and what have you ... the Portuguese
brought chillies, potatoes, the skills of making bread (and
wine!) to India -- and much more.

Goa was already a SunAparant (golden Goa) from long
before. The Portuguese influence added a different
dimension, without which Goa would be
indistinguishable from other coastal areas of South
Maharashtra or North Karnataka. The Konkan region
on the western seaboard of India from South Gujarat
to the tip of Kerala is dotted with beautiful
beaches. But tourists flock to Goa. Not just
because it is God's Own Country or for her beaches
alone. Goa's ambience is different. It is a
delightful fusion of the East and the West, if you
  will.

The Portuguese shaped Goa Dourada (golden Goa) in their own
mould. They gave us a sound system of record-keeping and an
uniform civil code -- so much that India's highest-paid
advocate from Delhi had the law tweaked to have his
daughter's marriage registered in Goa. The environment was
different. Even our relocated (and later, reconstructed)
major Hindu temples bear a distinct architectural look. We
must not throw the baby out with the bathwater.

There sure was murky bathwater.

Chief among their bad was the forced spread of their faith
and culture in a land -- India -- that was a far older
civilisation than any in Europe. (The Danes, the Dutch, the
British and the French who followed them into India did not
overtly interfere with the religion of the land; the British
quietly plundered the land, enriched themselves, impoverished
India, and when the going was difficult, quit; the Portuguese
neither enriched themselves nor Goans, and refused to quit --
unfortunately, they had to be shoved out with use of force.)

Albuquerque died the day he learnt of his ouster in 1515. In
1521, John III became king of Portugal and the maxim, Cujus
regio illius religio meaning 'religion of the king is
religion of the people', gained currency. (So reminiscent of
India's Hindu Rashtra politics of today where 'religion of
the majority is religion of the state' or any of the
religion-based countries). Proselytisation began in Goa.

Their second biggest blunder was that they converted only
some, and not all, to their faith (they ought to have
converted none, but if they thought that the princ

[Goanet] DAYLIGHT LOOT IN UTTER CONNIVANCE

2022-06-30 Thread Aires Rodrigues
The recently hot mixed roads across Panaji and Ribandar have been washed
away and left us with the familiar sight of dangerous potholes all over the
accident-prone roads. Obviously the tar has flowed into devious pockets. In
a State with empty coffers, yet again taxpayer’s money has blatantly gone
down the drain.

Roads once hot mixed must last for years but we are now seeing these not
lasting even for days. If a proper coat of cow dung was laid these roads
may have lasted longer.

There needs to be an inquiry into such blatant and criminal waste of public
funds. The errant contractors need to be blacklisted and punished.
Officials who connived must also face the music for corruption and gross
dereliction of duty. This is not a one-off but a regular situation whether
it is our roads, bridges or any state sponsored projects. Quality of work
is never an accident. It is always the result of intelligent and honest
effort besides reducing overall costs.

There is an urgent need for a meticulous audit in every facet of work being
tendered and executed by all government departments. Optimum levels of
quality control must be ensured in all projects. Transparency and
accountability must always be at the helm with harsh and swift action
without fear or favours against all those involved for breach of contract.

Frank Herbert, an American writer observed ‘Good governance never depends
upon laws, but upon the personal qualities of those who govern. The
machinery of government is always subordinate to the will of those who
administer that machinery’.

2022-06-30 Thread Roland Francis
A story related by Shantanu Basu on FB, mistakes and all. Thought readers may
be tickled pink. A little humour specially when true never hurts.

A TALE IN MUMBAI

Our colleague Rohan is number one kamchor (shirker). He avoids all office work
but he is master in buttering our MD, Mr Ganesh Chadda. He does all work
whatever Boss orders. Apart from Boss’s official work, he does all his personal
household work like depositing son’s college fee, buying daughter’s dance
school dress, taking Boss’s wife to shopping etc. Rohan also does Boss’s car
servicing job, complete son’s project work everything whatever Boss says. So
Rohan is number one favourite of MD Saheb. This way Rohan got all promotions
very first. We are only repenting our fate becoz Boss is not happy with our
job. Rohan has a beautiful time.

One day, we got sudden news about MD saheb’s mother’s demise. We all ran to his
house with a very sad face as if our mother has expired!

Surprisingly Rohan was not to be seen anywhere in Boss’s Bungalow. Everybody
was speculating how Rohan is missing the chance to score. We all arranged for
vehicle furnished with garlands and Boss’s mother was taken to crematorium.
What a fate! There’s about 16 bodies lying in the queue for electric burning. I
calculated, each body will at least take 4 to 5 hrs to burn. So may be tomorrow
we may go back home. Boss was red faced and temperament very bitter.

Suddenly, the 2nd body started sitting. We all ran helter skelter. To our utter
surprise we discovered it was none other than Rohan. He said to MD Saheb, Sir
our number is 2nd, I was waiting from morning, lying as a dead body. We were
all stunned to see his level of buttering, here also he scored century.
