[Goanet] The Goa Inquisition-Book 20
The Goa Inquisition: The Terrible Tribunal for the East By Anant Kakba Priolkar 2020 Goa Book Cover Challenge-Day/Book 20 Since its first publication in 1961, this eye-opening book on the Inquisition in Goa has provoked much debate and criticism and an equally well researched response from disagreeing historians. At the same time, it has drawn history buffs and the layman to explore a culturally disruptive colonial past. @2020GBCC #2020GBCC -- Best regards, *Armenia Fernandes* Mobile: +91 9822696807 Email: armen...@gmail.com
[Goanet] Colonialism, Migration and the International Catholic Goan Community-Book19
Colonialism, Migration and the International Catholic Goan Community By Stella Mascarenhas-Keyes 2020 Goa Book Covers Challenge-Book/Day 19 This scholarly work serves up an “enlightening and indepth” account of Goan migration from a global and local perspective. Dr Mascarenhas-Keyes traces the Goan diaspora over the past two centuries across British India, Africa, the Gulf Arab states and the UK and beyond to Canada, the US and Australia. Republished as an e-book in August 2020, the theoretical perspective it offers is particularly relevant in these times of intense debate on migration. #2020GBCC @2020GBCC -- Best regards, *Armenia Fernandes* Mobile: +91 9822696807 Email: armen...@gmail.com

Gaaz By Shashikant Punaji 2020 Goa Book Cover Challenge-Day/Book 18 “Tumi bhajan-am kirtan-am keleant Tumche vangda avartanam marit ravlom Punn Dev amkam paucho, to pavloch na...” This and more comes from ‘Gaaz’, the collection of piquant Konkani poems penned from 1985-1992 by journalist-poet Shashikant Punaji. Published in 1993, it’s probably out of print. But on my list nonetheless, for old times sakes. @2020GBCC #2020GBCC -- Best regards, *Armenia Fernandes* Mobile: +91 9822696807 Email: armen...@gmail.com
[Goanet] Mapusa Yesterday & Today -Book 17
Mapusa Yesterday & Today By Domnic P F Fernandes 2020 Goa Book Cover Challenge-Day/Book 17 As a Socorro lass who’s passed through the portals of St Mary’s Convent High School and St Xavier’s College, and married to a Cunchelkar, Mapusa remains an integral part of my life. This well-researched book fills in many gaps in our knowledge of this hoary, bustling trading and commercial hub of North Goa. As the author says, though, more needs to be written and recorded of our beloved town. @2020GBCC #2020GBCC -- Best regards, *Armenia Fernandes* Mobile: +91 9822696807 Email: armen...@gmail.com
[Goanet] Girls in Green- book14
Girls in Green: Memoirs from St Mary’s 2020 Goa Book Cover Challenge-Day/Book 14 This string of essays by alumni and former teachers of St Mary’s Convent, Mapusa harks back to a time of growing up with mates and Maths, of teachers strict and kind, of boarding houses and St Britto’s boys. I too belonged to one batch of such “giddy headed girls” with our “Binaca and jalebi” smiles and was asked to say my bit, but sadly my hand was in a cast with a fractured finger and I couldn’t. @2020GBCC #2020GBCC -- Best regards, *Armenia Fernandes* Mobile: +91 9822696807 Email: armen...@gmail.com
[Goanet] From Goa to Patagonia-Book 13
>From Goa to Patagonia By Alfredo F de Mello 2020 Goa Book Cover Challenge-Day/Book 13 These are recollections from the 19 years the author spent as a child and adolescent in Goa and India, prior to settling in Uruguay. His father Dr Froilano de Mello represented Portuguese India in Parliament. As Professor of Medicine and Research Scientist in Parasitology at the former Pasteur Institute at Goa Medical College, Dr de Mello is credited with eradicating malaria from Old Goa. This is therefore, also a ‘son’s story’. An “excellent and useful contribution to the jigsaw puzzle of Goa’s history” that’s worth delving into. @2020GBCC #2020GBCC -- Best regards, *Armenia Fernandes* Mobile: +91 9822696807 Email: armen...@gmail.com

Dr Wilfred De Souza: A journey with an exceptional leader of Goa By Daniel Albuquerque 2020 Goa Book Cover Challenge-Day/Book 11 Through ‘conversations’, this long overdue book shines the spotlight on one of Goa’s illustrious sons, a leading surgeon and consummate politician. The book traces Dr Willy’s childhood in Goa and Uganda to his medical education in war-time Bombay and later, the UK. It talks about his little-known stint at Dubai’s Al Maktoum Hospital where he became the first doctor to conduct a surgical procedure on an Arab woman, a sheikha, in the UAE and even dined with Sheikh Zayed, later that country’s founding President. And then to his return home and making history in Goa’s political arena. A collector’s item. @2020GBCC #2020GBCC -- Best regards, *Armenia Fernandes* Mobile: +91 9822696807 Email: armen...@gmail.com

Re: [Goanet] Maid situation in Gulf (Cecil Pinto)
6. Maid situation in Gulf (Cecil Pinto) Based in the Gulf does not mean that you are living in luxury. We're based in the UAE and did a bit of checking on formalities/expenses for bringing in a maid, recently. Here's what we were told: Rs 6000 to be paid to the immigration authorities in Mumbai (one-time) AED 4800 to be paid to consulate in Dubai, that comes to nearly Rs 58,000 (annual) AED 900 for one-way ticket to come in, about Rs 11,000, two-way ticket usually once in two years, that's AED 1800 or more, depending on type of flight and airline, (direct to Goa, Indian Airlines etc) AED 200 for medicals and visa, annually Plus food, medical bills (this is very expensive, most of us come back home for this), clothes, weekly offs, telephone calls to India etc, all other expenses House rents in Sharjah average Rs 25,000 per month, the maid doesn't pay for accomodation The formalities and ticket alone cost almost Rs 72,000 each year, add to that Rs 60,000 towards salary @ Rs 5000 per month, that's 1.32 lakh rupees each year, in addition to living expenses. Average salaries here are about AED 4000 for a reasonably good job for accountants and even for journalists in some organisations. Hope this throws some light on the issue. thanks.
