P R E S S N O T E:. PANJM, May 04, 2019: Concerned at the heavy earth
moving machinery being recently kept close to the heritage mango trees at
the Colvale National Highway, the Goa Green Brigade called upon the Chief
Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant today to protect these trees from being damaged
or cut by the road building contractor. The Goa Green
Brigade requested the immediate intervention of the Chief Minister to
ensure that no heritage mango trees at Colvale are cut or damaged in any
form considering the fact that heavy earth moving machinery has been
brought very close to the roots of these mango trees. The Chief Minister
assured that he will immediately inquire on the machinery being kept close
to these Colvale trees and ensure that the trees are protected.. The CM has
also agreed to meet a delegation of Goa Green Brigade coming Monday, May 6
at 4 pm who will apprise him on the need to protect these trees. The Goa
Green Brigade will present a memorandum highlighting the significant role
played by the century old mango trees in maintaining not just the greenery
of the village, but also the rich biodiversity of the area which is home
to birds, reptiles, insects, ants, butterflies, etc. Besides its historic
significance, the century old mango trees are symbolic of one being
welcomed to Goa. It may be recalled that recently
activists were assured by the erstwhile PWD minister that no trees would
be cut on the National Highway passing through Colvale, following protests
by activists from different parts of Goa who gathered spontaneously
following the construction of huge trenches close to the roots of the
heritage mango trees.
