He's been a teacher, teaching Science and Mathematics, who later on retired as Headmaster in 2005. He was also the Sarpanch of Candolim for 22yrs. Later he was also elected as the M.L.A and the Speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly. He also contributes his ideas and opinions in the form of writing to various newspapers and magazines both in English and Konkani (Roman Script). He has as many as 24 books to his credit. He is also a recipient of many awards and is probably the only Goan to receive as many as three State awards. In this interview with *Anzil Fernandes*, Cardozo narrates his journey as teacher to his current position as the First President of Tiatr Academy of Goa and a tiatrist himself. **http://www.goenche.com/career_details.php?id=8 *Could you tell us more about your growth curve and getting to where you want to?* Since I belong to lower middle class family but was sure of one thing that there was a great talent in our family. My father used to play violin, my elder brother was all involved in dramatic activities. He used to write plays, songs etc so that is the influence which I got right from childhood to act and to sing. As time passed, I started writing and when people start appreciating I began printing books on different subjects such drama. So far I have written around 24 books. So you see there was something in the family. Although there was no money, the talent was there. My father died when I was just 1 month old and we had to struggle a lot.But my elder brother saw to it that I studied. I thought after S.S.C.E I'll start working but my brother encouraged me to study. And after my graduation I started teaching and simultaneously did my B.Ed. I was also conducting a lot of cultural and sport activities and people felt that I should contest in the Panchayat elections.Subsequently I was elected as member of the panchyat, from 1973-1977. Later on form 1977, I was elected as the Sarpanch for next five consecutive terms. This was basically because of the sincerity and work we did and not because of any money power. And at that time people felt that I should contest for the Legislative Assembly and I was elected. Fourtunately or unfortunately I was chosen as the speaker and role of the speaker is very crucial. But unlike any other minister, I as the speaker had very few opportunities to do good work in my own constituency. Due to this post I had the opportunity to travel the world and attend Common Wealth Parliamentary Association meeting and contribute our views on different issues. But I realised that people remember you and support for your good work. I always said to myself that I will continue serving in any field be it sport, cultural or politics as long as people want me, the day people will say "no, you are not wanted" that will be the end. In 2000 when I was defeated in Legistative Assembly election that was the end of my political career, although people tried to force me to continue be, that didn't convince me at all. Because I believe that if people really respect you then they should support you throughout and not just change sides cause of money. My principle was that I will taste defeat once and that will be the final. After the end of my political career I joined back as a teacher and I retired as a teacher in 2005. Mean while I was also writing dramas, articles for magazines and newspaper etc and subsequently I also published a few books. When the government established Tiatr Academy of Goa, the Chief Minister of Goa appointed me a President of T.A.G, this helped me to put my views and my opinions into action. *Tell us about your experience as a Speaker of Legislative Assembly from 1999. * I was the Sarpanch for 22 years and I was Speaker for 5 years. 22 years as a Sarpanch were beautiful and enjoyable. 5 years as Speaker were really disastrous because as I was dealing with active political life. I realised I was not the fit person in politics and that must be the reason I was not elected when I contested for the second term. Today I realise that to survive in politics you need to have all the qualities good as well as bad. With only good qualities you will not survive and that is what I saw when it happened to me. I remember my friend telling me that they would not come to me as long I am in politics because everybody considered a politician a fraud, a rogue. People will respect him because of his power and not out of love and once he loses his power there is no respect for him.
