My dad (the late Dr. Manuel Dias) was his first cousin, younger by just a year, and they were hostel-mates in Wadia College Poona. Fleming was inventing even then. He had devised an alarm clock that would first ring, then start giving you gentle electric shocks to coax you to wake up! I used to love to listen to their stories of college life in Poona. They made it sound so romantic! [Goanet] Letter to the Editor
--- Annual Goanetters Meet --- Annual Goanetters Meet - December 28, 2015 - 11:00 am Fundacao Oriente, Mala, Altinho, Panjim, Goa http://bit.ly/FundacaoOrienteGoa The Fundao Oriente carries out cultural and artistic activities in India with, for historical and cultural reasons, special emphasis on the State of Goa. Looking forward to seeing you there --- The shoddy and biased way in which the whole investigation into the murder of Fr. Bismarque Dias has been conducted is a textbook case of how to 'stitch up' the evidence to produce a pre-planned 'verdict' by devious sleight-of-hand. First we were asked to believe that Fr. Bismarque consumed excessive amounts of alcohol, and then 'entered the water' for the 'first' time and the 'second' time, all of these 'times' determined solely on the testimony of the 'boys' who allegedly were with Fr. Bismarque and ought to have been regarded as prime suspects or accomplices to murder but for inexplicable reasons haven't. But this is passed off as fact, in particular by a section of the press and television that quite conveniently is owned by people with interests in real estate and mining, two industries that Fr. Bismarque strongly opposed when they broke the law and harmed the environment. Then, when the alcohol intoxication myth was dispelled by forensic evidence from the viscera study, we were, against all logic, asked to believe that the absence of alcohol actually proved the absence of foul play. How exactly it did this, could never be explained, not in any logical manner. In fact, all those empty bottles ought to have tipped the police off that there were many others involved in the death of Fr. Bismarque. If he didn't consume the alcohol, it must have been consumed by others who should at the very least be brought in and interrogated. We have seen no attempt by the police to look into this angle at all. And now, the latest conjuror's trick is the diatom test, the magic wand that seems to prove beyond doubt (as all the papers gleefully proclaim on their front pages) that there was "no foul play". How exactly? All it proves is that Fr. Bismarque met his end where he was found. It cannot tell us anything more than this. All circumstantial evidence, including the blood-stained patch of earth by the water body where it is almost certain Fr. Bismarque was beaten and tortured, the finger-printing of the bottle caps and other material evidence at the site, all of been deliberately botched. The eye-witnessed injuries on the body of Fr. Bismarque have been discounted, and very little can be done now about this, as time will have taken its inexorable course on these findings. And now, in the absence of all of these, we are left with one measly diatom test and efforts will be made to close the case on the 'strength' of this alone. Fr .Bismarque had filed a police complaint that he had received death threats from some people, just a day or two before he met his tragic end. Why have these people not even been rounded up and interrogated? What about all the others that Fr. Bismarque had opposed over the years, politicians, builders, mine-owners, all of whom would have had a very strong motive? Why haven't they been called in for questioning? Those of us who knew Fr. Bismarque knew that he had not left the church of his own volition, but had been asked to leave. He said this explicitly to me more than once. Why are we now being asked to believe that he 'voluntarily' left the church when he didn't? There is a taped record of a telephone interview where he clearly admits that he did not want to leave the priesthood. How is one supposed to have justice if there are forces at work that can manipulate all the institutions that are meant to be unbiased and impartial? The murder of Fr. Bismarque, and the woeful spineless handling of the investigation into his death will go down as a black patch in Goa's history. The people of Goa are angry, upset, disappointed and depressed in every possible way by this gross miscarriage of justice. Ms. Martin’s playing of Beethoven’s Triple Concerto can be heard on the soundtrack of DreamWorks’ The Soloist, starring Jamie Foxx. She has received raves from the Los Angeles Times: stirring virtuosity…unusual fervor and fluency…persuasive, impassioned…exhilarating power at high speed….an extraordinary recital. GAVIN MARTIN‘s musical endeavours brought him from India to the United States by way of the Royal College of Music in London. He considers his approach to music strongly influenced by the playing of the late Jorge Bolet and Gary Graffman, two pianists with whom he studied extensively. Upon graduating from the Curtis Institute, he was awarded the Rachmaninoff Prize. Martin has performed in solo recital on all five continents, in addition to touring extensively as a chamber musician. The conductors he has appeared with as soloist include Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos and Zubin Mehta, the latter with whom he made his New York Philharmonic debut in 1985. He has toured under the auspices of the US State Department, and has appeared on the television stations of the BBC, Suisse Romande, and ABC. Reviewing his New York City recital debut at Carnegie Recital Hall, the New York Times carried the caption Classical Light, Romantic Heat and a Dazzler. As duo pianists, the Martins have been featured as soloists with the Los Angeles Philharmonic on multiple occasions, at both the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl. They have also appeared at the Mormon Tabernacle in Salt Lake City, The Music Academy in Santa Barbara, and the Teatro Nacional in San Jose, Costa Rica, where they were invited to perform a recital at the hall’s 100th anniversary celebration. In addition to their musical pursuits, Joanne and Gavin are both active aerobatic pilots and skydivers – they have done BASE jumps off the world’s tallest waterfall, Angel Falls in Venezuela. _ Dr. Luis Francisco Dias Casa da Moeda Near Head Post Office Panaji, Goa - 403001 INDIA Tel: (+91) 9011051950 http://luisdias.wordpress.com http://www.childsplayindia.org

[Goanet] Fr. Bismarque Dias brings hope to Cumbarjua consituency
Fr. Bismarque Dias brings Hope to Cumbarjua constituency PANJIM, 28 February 2012: In the fight for Cumbharjua constituency, kindness is a new weapon. Independent candidate, Fr. Bismarque Dias is gaining support across the constituency with his ‘Kindness Manifesto’ and clean, untainted image. “We need to waive off the corruption and support clean candidates like Fr. Bismarque,” says Divar resident Merwyn Menezes, of the well-known Farmacia Camilo Menezes. John Fernandes, also from Divar, supports Bismarque Dias for his clean image and his anti-corruption stance. Fatima Bootland of Divar found that Dias’ Kindness Manifesto resonated deeply with her conscience. “We are fed up of the usual politicians and their empty promises. If they have so much money for mahila mandals, how is it that they couldn’t provide basic amenities like a garbage disposal unit for our Divar?” Joseph Marques of St. Estevam was all praise for Fr. Bismarque. “I personally know Fr. Bismarque as a hardworking person and we have undertaken numerous field trips to monitor levels of pollution and decay of our environment,” he said. “He has stood firmly against the challenges of muscle and money power.” Suzette Silveira, also of St. Estevam, agrees. “Trust Fr. Bismarque to do the best for the betterment of our children,” she said. Fr. Dias’ background of fighting for environmental and human rights issues are gaining him support from beyond the constituency borders. The campaign has attracted national and international attention with one press report comparing the campaign to Barack Obama’s presidential campaign, which was centered on Hope and Change. It is very easy to sneer at the system but very difficult to step forward to try and change it. I salute Father Bismarque's courage and I am glad that people of integrity like him are willing to try and be the change,” says writer and activist Venita Coelho. “He is a social activist with a long history of working to protect the environment,” said Advocate Jatin Naik. “Unlike so many others in the political fray, he is genuine and not an opportunist.” Fr. Dias’ unusual and innovative campaign has included a Facebook page, Earth Kindness Picnics and 10,000 pledges of Kindness that have seen people from all over the world pledging to do little acts of kindness on March 3. --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php ---
[Goanet] Objection letter to high-mast illumination in Panjim
Hi everyone, I have attached a letter which we have written to the Mayor, with copies to the MLA Parrikar, as well as PWD, Charles Correa Foundation, GHAG, etc. It will fill you in on the facts of the proposed high-mast illumination in the Post Office area. Below is the text of the letter which Mr. Percival Noronha of Indian Heritage Society very promptly sent off as well, as soon as he heard about this. GHAG (Goa Heritage Action Group) has just written their protest as well. Allow me here to summarise here at least seven points on why we are objecting to this: 1. If illumination of the area is an issue, there is already existing infrastructure in place in the form of lamp-posts and streetlights. It would be far more economical and sensible to repair and maintain what is already in place. This would provide more than adequate illumination for the area. There are several streetlights which function erratically, or have bulbs missing and these issues need to be addressed rather than focusing energy on a high-mast installation. We agree that illumination of the area has to be improved, but not by a high-mast installation. Kindly improve and maintain the existing infrastructure. 2. All over the world, there are attempts being made to curb light pollution and such a light installation would be totally against this concept. 3. In a historic, heritage conservation area such as the Post Office and Sao Tome area, such an installation would be totally in conflict with the aesthetic of the place and would irreversibly damage its character. 4. It is a well documented fact that in a residential area, high power illumination can lead to health problems such as disturbed circadian rhythms, disruption to sleep patterns, insomnia and increased stress and anxiety levels. 5. We would like to know if any feasibility study or environmental impact assessment study was done, or which panel of experts was consulted prior to taking the decision to erect the high-mast installation. 6. There will be duplication of energy resources due the illumination of the same area by the high-mast installation as well as the existing streetlights. 7. The proposed site for the high-mast installation will encroach on precious parking space in a prime location of the city. There is already a huge problem in the locality due to paucity of parking space and there is regular traffic chaos, which will be worsened if one or two more spaces are obliterated due to the erection of the high-mast installation. If you too are of the view that this high-mast illumination is a bad idea in a historic, heritage conservation, residential area, it would help matters greatly if you could write in as well. The MLA has put forth the argument that some people want it. Time is of the essence as they are very keen to erect it ASAP. We were able to persuade them not to do it on Saturday, but might not be able to stave them off for much longer, without a show of popular sentiment against it. Best wishes, Luis _ Dr. Luis Francisco Dias Casa da Moeda Near Head Post Office Panaji, Goa - 403001 INDIA Tel: (+91) 9011051950 http://luisdias.wordpress.com http://www.childsplayindia.org - Mr.Yatin Parekh, Mayor, Corporation of the City of Panaji Sub: - Objection to proposed high-mast installation at the Post Office Square, Panjim Kindly refer to the letter addressed to you by Dr. Luis Dias, resident of Casa da Moeda, near the Head Post Office, Panjim regarding his objection to the proposed high-mast installation at the Post Office Square. Our Society fully agrees with the views expressed by Dr. Dias. The Post Office Square is in fact a small triangular patch of land wrongly named as square. The existing illumination needs only a watchful attendance whenever there is any light failure. We in Panjim have enough pollution by way of garbage, open gutters stinking and due to lack of proper sweeping of streets etc. We, earnestly hope that better sense will prevail and the small square will be spared from light pollution. Re: [Goanet] Goan veterans
Dear Selma, I never ever wanted to engage in any sort of match as you so quaintly put it. This was triggered by your remark on a public forum, saying that my grandfather was considered to be a pro-Nazi in Goa. I felt compelled to respond. So please don't you dare lecture me on how best to preserve my grandfather's memory, shortly after you yourself have publicly hinted at possible blemishes in them. Pro-Nazi is a strong, loaded statement. You now mention minor surveillance (which you also did in the first post), but not the pro-Nazi comment. Perhaps you would care to explain how, in my justified defence of him, I am denying my grandfather his courage. A remark on an internet forum survives as a record, and in future if anyone does a search, every stray comment ever made in cyberspace shows up and often becomes the basis of historical record, and eventually can get accepted as fact. This is why I am reacting so strongly. You publicly offered to send me the relevant document (file no. FO 371/31136) by email, so I shall hold you to that. As regards the request for your postal address, it was triggered by the tone of your own email ...by now I am quite used to people popping up from history books and demanding apologies from me, so I too have taken legal advice in this matter. So what then is the problem with letting me have your address? I feel no fear of any legal action. To call a remark like pro-Nazi about my own grandfather as something disagreeable to me is a Himalayan understatement. Whether I burst onto Goanet or not is a subjective feeling that you hold. It certainly perpetuates a falsity with malice to make a statement like this without then furnishing the proof to substantiate this. I am glad that you now laud my grandfather's courage and daring. He was a great man, who Goa seems to have forgotten by the wayside. I have tried hard to ensure he gets the credit for Goa's first ever radio broadcast. (26 May 1946). I mentioned this to a Goanetter who actually has a blog on Radio in India, but it met with indifferent silence. I can quote chapter and verse on this accomplishment of his, and many others. Thank you very much for your kind offer of assistance in unearthing archived information. You can start making good on this offer by sending me the document that led to this whole exchange in the first place. ;-) Private, publicly, as I said is totally irrelevant. Our family has nothing to hide. You have still not answered my queries regarding the alleged suspension, nor where you got this little nugget of information. I still do look forward to your postal address. Please feel free to send it to me privately if you are not comfortable sending it on this forum. Best wishes, Dr Luis Dias Casa da Moeda Near Head Post Office Panaji-Goa INDIA 2224642, 9011051950. --- On Wed, 18/11/09, Carvalho elisabeth_...@yahoo.com wrote: From: Carvalho elisabeth_...@yahoo.com Subject: Re: Goan veterans To: Goanet goa...@goanet.org, se...@goanet.org, Luis Dias diasfl...@yahoo.com Date: Wednesday, 18 November, 2009, 11:39 Dear Dr Dias, I do not want to engage in a public mudslinging match. That is not doing any good to either of our reputations. This is my last post on the matter so let me quickly make my points. 1. You burst onto Goanet and use words such as slander and libel. To slander is to lie, perpetuate a falsity with malice. I have done no such thing. This is unjust to my own reputation. I have stated a historical fact that your grandfather was under minor surveillance by the British counsel. You or anyone else who wishes to verify this fact, may go to the National Archives in Kew, Richmond, UK and do so. In good faith, I give you the file no. FO 371/31136. Everything I have stated is sourced from this file. Incidentally I was not doing any research on your family. I chanced upon it whilst researching something else more than a year ago. I just stated it on Goanet because it was relevant to the discussion we were having at the time. 2. Are you entirely sure that your grandfather would want you to defend him in such a manner? It seems to me that your grandfather was a courageous and daring man and fully invested in his own political convictions. Why are you now denying him his courage? How courageous this man was to go against commonly held views and pursue his own path in life, keep his own company. I wonder if he knew that he was being watched but even if he did, I doubt he would have cared little. Don't do this to your grandfather's memory. 3. I don't understand what significance my postal address has to you? Unless there is a thinly disguised threat in there somewhere. Surely you don't want to be seen threatening another Goan on a public forum into silence just because something is disagreeable to you. Recently we had the speaker of the assembly threatening a writer in Goa into silence. It seems that we Goans

In the message attached below Selma Carvalho says that she can confirm that the Goan who was considered pro-Nazi was Dr Victor Dias, who just happens to be my grandfather. I would like to know how in the course of her research she came to this conclusion. Such a claim, on a public forum, is slander, it is calumny. Re: [Goanet] Goan veterans
Dear Selma, Thank you for your public response. You have ignored the bulk of my post, for reasons best known to you, and responded, and inadequately at that, to the last few lines of it: 1. You have not mentioned why you didn't consult any family member of Dr Victor Manuel Dias. Our family is fairly well-known here, so it shouldn't have been a difficult task. Your colleagues on Goanet could have pointed you in our direction. Wouldn't this have been a more logical, more scholarly approach? Rather than referring to just one document in a dusty museum in Kew? If you have contacted the extended family of Dr Victor Dias, who are they? 2. You haven't responded to your veiled hint on how you will not say anything about the alleged suspension of Dr Dias (Victor? Antonio? you do not clarify) at a Margao hostipal (sic). Why not? As I said before, our family has nothing to hide. If it is Dr Antonio Dias that is being referred to, was it really necessary to bring up his alleged suspension in this thread? This thread was about Goan veterans. In any case, I would like you to furnish your source for this as well. As a family member, I wish to know this, before it is trotted out as fact in this book you are supposedly writing. 3. While you make a token apology at the start, the rest of your response doesn't sound apologetic at all. I have not popped up from history books. There was really no need for sarcasm here. I am flesh and blood, very much in this world, and knocked sideways by this unnecessary bolt from the blue. Does the fact that you have legal advice somehow make this any better? What about the hurt caused not only to me, but to the rest of my family, and other families like me, when such half-baked research is paraded publicly? 4. In your original post, you merely said ...was considered pro-Nazi in Goa. The British considered anyone who ran counter to their interests as an enemy agent. This is hardly the same thing as being pro-Nazi. 5. I would like to see this document, which you have so kindly offered to furnish, in response to my post. Whether you do this privately or publicly is irrelevant. As I said before, our family has nothing to hide. 6. Since you have alluded so forthrightly to your legal advice, perhaps you could mention your postal address and other contact details too. I have mentioned mine. I look forward to your response.
