You are most welcome to take a seat next to me. We exchange cards, introduce ourselves and let's start the Charcha. I must confess that I am not a person with an exceptional intellectual ability; I am just a little more than an enthusiast. I would like to talk about my kind of curation and photography with you and talk to you about the philosophy behind the curation and my understanding of photography with you; at the same time I would like to hear about your kind of photography and your understanding about the images in the exhibition. We may disagree, debate and confront each other. You may neither be a photographer nor a person who keeps any knowledge of photography. You may hail from literature or religious or academic background or be a cultural activist; it is not a problem. Important is to have a dialogue on Photography. I also take this opportunity to thank you for your wonderful support and contribution to realize our dream. 2014 gave us a lot of surprises most of which have been challenging. We encountered them with courage and learnt all along the way to reach 2015. We lost the physical space and started functioning in makeshift places around India. We thought that we could re-open in December but it could not happen. We are determined to make it into a functional place this year. We had a highly successful 'Wanted Series (http://goa-cap.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d13487bc4ab5801e65b4c5ecb&id=02548fdd8d&e=815534e5c8) ' event which happened in multiple cities around India. Towards end of the year, we got a huge surprise of Kodak donating its entire cine lab to Goa-CAP. Now we are proud custodians of one of the finest labs in the world which we have renamed as “The Celluloid Project (http://goa-cap.us4.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=d13487bc4ab5801e65b4c5ecb&id=947f4d0580&e=815534e5c8) ”. This sets us the roadmap for this year, 2015. 2015, is the year of Photo festivals, 4 photo festivals are lined-up, and again millions and millions of images will be produced, exhibited and consumed every day, week and month. We brainstormed on the current scenario and we have decided to dedicate this year to "Ethics in Photography". Towards this we have created a computer supported, conversations and learning tool, developed primarily for photographers, artists, educators, researchers and common public. Goa Center for Alternative Photography (http://goa-cap.us4.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=d13487bc4ab5801e65b4c5ecb&id=0606c46180&e=815534e5c8) is now a proud custodian of one of the world’s best Cinelab – Kodak Cine labs. The iconic Kodak Cine Labs in Mumbai, India which had once processed some of India’s finest films, shot on 16 & 35mm color film negative, in addition to portions of Hollywood films like The Dark Knight and Slum Dog Millionaire, was shut down on 1st November 2014 and all equipment was donated to Goa Center for Alternative Photography for converting it into a Cooperative Cinelab. We have named this initiative as “The Celluloid Project” We have successfully dismantled the entire plant and shifted it to Goa. We are committed to revive and activate this lab very soon. We thank Kodak for its generosity in donating us the equipment, which we have successfully moved from Mumbai to Goa. We thank all our supporters and donors who believed in us and in ’Film’. Without them we wouldn’t have achieved this arduous task of acquiring and shifting the equipment within ten days. We hope you all will continue to share your support as we enter the next phase of restoring the lab facility. As a self-proclaimed Gandhian, I have always wanted to re-live his experience to understand how he felt about complex issues; to know about how he devised strategies; his communication approaches and about his organizational ideologies. Most of the time ends in turmoil of thoughts and continuation of nomadic illusions. I have however continued and started taking pleasure in this commotion. Three year back on 6^th of July 2011, in the quest to experiment my understanding on Gandhiji and also to experience what he went through during the historical walk, I along with my 3 other Colleagues at Goa-CAP, embarked upon an epic Salt march. The Salt March, mainly known as the Salt Satyagraha or Dandi March was undertaken on 12^th March 1930 and formed an integral part of the Indian independence movement. Starting from the Sabarmati Ashram, we walked the same route, halted, slept and ate at the same villages where Gandhiji had stepped. Enroute, spoke to numerous villagers on varied topics, engaged with the youth and children and photographed the entire journey spanned across 381 km in over 24 days. Over the past three years, I have been contemplating the idea of bringing out my views, what I saw, my understanding, and my confusion; did I succeed in comprehending Gandhi’s political thinking? and the result is a set of 24 black and white images edited in a non-linear, narrative style photo story titled “ON THIS ROAD, GANDHI WALKED ONCE (http://goa-cap.us4.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=d13487bc4ab5801e65b4c5ecb&id=507ffbe0ee&e=815534e5c8) , - a journey through the transformed landscapes which once accommodated and shaped the non-violent movement”. This photo story is a confluence of visuals and thoughts of the iconic National Highway 228 (NH 228) which connects Sabarmati Ashram at Ahmedabad to Dandi. This Photo exhibition is a virtual display of images through the social media site Facebook. This experiment is to engage with the new social reality, addressed to emerging virtual societies.
